Refer to Ayn Rand's non-fiction bood entitled "The Romantic Manifesto" There's an excellent introduction to Victor Hugo's Ninety-Three. That's what made me want to read it and why I continue to read it over and over.

Brilliant

I encountered this book while writing an honors undergraduate history thesis on the revolt in the Vendee--which is the setting for this book. Ninety-Three is both a literary masterpiece and an historical commentary ahead of its time. Hugo carefully balances his personal belief in the French Republic, and his distaste for the methods used by the Republicans in 1793. His characters are vivid allegories, and the novel is peppered with small parables. It is a story where the "giants" of Robespierre, Marat and Danton become less important than three small children, where the Republic of Swords must face the Republic of Ideas.

I highly recommend this for anyone studying the French Revolution. It is also a fine piece of prose.

I have read the book by Bernie Bomba, and enjoyed it very much. I am over thirteen however could not figure out how to access the form to write an adult review. I found everything about the book enjoyable. It was easy to read, and hard to put down. I would recomend this book to any of my friend or colleagues. Judy Howes

Bomba is rare breed in such a realm as this, of intellectual degradation and the systematic desensualization of an entire society to the importance of an artistic and spiritual recognition of being. Bomba is a reminder for the distressed in such an unexpressionate world of the creative and artistic passions that burrow somewhere deep in them with no outlet. He leads you by hand through the wilderness of his existence in a sort of zen circle, that makes a comfort of uncertainty. Never by nature of a single word has such spiritual music been beautifully expressed.

A great teacher loves his subject and transmits that love to his students

I was one of the many students privileged to learn Chaucer from Professor Huppe. His love of the subject was apparent and deep. When he read the opening lines of the 'Canterbury Tales' in his rich resonant voice you could sense the greatness of true poetry.
Huppe was not only a teacher of Chaucer but was also an eminent Chaucer scholar as this book shows. Huppe developed along with Robertson of Princeton the Robertson- Huppe thesis as to the real meaning of Chaucer. Essentially this is the Christian approach which ees Chaucer as primarily presenting a vision for the believing Christian.
This thesis has been of course often disputed. But whether one buys the overall thesis or not ,Huppe's insights on Chaucer are
interesting, and his understanding , deep and fundamental.

I studied Chaucer with Professor Huppe at SUNY Binghamton many years ago. He was an inspiring teacher, whose love of literature and especially Chaucer radiated through his every carefully measured and richly rounded utterance. His reading of Chaucer is the well- known Robertson- Huppe theory in which they see Chaucer as fundamentally a Christian religious artist. The comedy and the irony, Chaucer is so rich in, are in this interpretation a way of forwarding a fundamentally religious view of the world.
Whether one agrees with this interpretation or not Professor's Huppe great knowledge and love of the subject guarantee that this work will provide for every lover of Chaucer rich new meanings and interpretations.

"art is either a complaint or do something else"

i consider this book to be the most valuable resource, in terms of art (art being all artistic medium) theory, that one can find. richard kostelanetz is a superb editor, and the book is organized to the infinitessimal of degrees. the book consists of a compendium of interviews with cage, conducted by various peoples, spanning about forty years. this book is a precise method through which to understand the means that led to cage's understanding of art and life. in that regard it serves as a fundamental piece of learning material because he divulges what he knows and how he came to know it, rather than how he feels.

excellent book for those wanting to know about Cage's ideas

This book is a collection of interviews with John Cage, the late avant garde composer who was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. The interviews span nearly a half century and give a cogent idea of Cage's thought on music, art, education, politics, and social revision.

If you are curious about why a composer would write music that is "silent", why he would use chance, nonintention, and denounce music as communication, this is a good book to begin an overview of Cage's philosophy of art.

It also shows that Cage's musical thought was not monolithic, but changed several times in the course of his life, as did his music.

Beautiful Visual of Orson Scott Card's Alvin and Ender
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-30
You have to get this if you love Alvin and/or Ender. This graphic novel is a great blend of alternate past and future. It is also the first time I have seen such a beautiful rendition of native americans for just a comic book.

Alvin's story is more amusing to see it from another perspective. You need this perspective to appreciate how simple, yet full of foreshadow, the first two Alvin books were. The story shows great care where racial lines are between the whites and reds, yet somehow Alvin trusts.

Ender's story is also an outsider's view of the Ender's universe with the first colony. There is a great potential story line of discovering more about the "bugs" that Ender is so intimate with.

This book has an excellent collection of volcano photos. The photos themselves show a variety of scenes from lava flows, to bubbling lava, volcanoes, the destruction caused by volcanoes and much more. Each color plate includes a description of where it was taken. Great stuff!

An extraordinary pick, capturing these volcanoes close-up and in action.

THE RED VOLCANOES: FACE TO FACE WITH THE MOUNTAINS OF FIRE surveys some of the most active volcanoes on earth - in Hawaii and on Reunion in the Indian Ocean - and are the focus of a photo essays by two photographers who have spent years capturing these most active volcanoes. While this could've also been featured in our Photography Shelf section, it's the science collection that will find it an extraordinary pick, capturing these volcanoes close-up and in action.

The great good that Christian Bernard is doing and has done for Rosicrucianism will take many years to evaluate fully. Almost singlehandedly he has modernized a noble but dying institution -- the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis -- whose best years are ahead of it, largely because of his efforts. This book, one of his numerous contributions to the cause of AMORC, explains as clearly as possible what it is and isn't, its historical roots, what it seeks to accomplish, and a great deal more. An enthralling read.

One of the best of AMORC's books

In the past , I didn't think very much of books published by AMORC.
They contained very little information about what's in the teachings of the
order .
Recently , I purchased a AMORC book with the title " Rosicrucian Order
AMORC Questions and Answers " .It is only 127 pages long .
I'm totally impressed with the openess of the answers .Few years ago ,
these topics were discussed among members only .
Here is an example :
Q ) What is the Rosucrucian conception of God ?

A ) .....God is not an antropormophic being sitting on a throne in some part of
heaven ,but is instead the absolute Intelligence which created the uiverse and
all of it that it contains.Although god is completely incropehensibleto us
mortals , we can study
the laws through which God maifests in creation .These laws are are discussed
in the order's teachings.

< SNIPPED >

Christian Bernard doesn't hide anything about what AMORC
teaches. He also points out that if the teachings of
of AMORC's lessons clash with a members religious beliefs ,
the member is is urged to follow his conscience ,and block
those teachings that offend him from his mind( Reincanation ,
non belief in a devil ,Karma , developig psychic powers ,etc. )

The Secret Clarified
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-16
As a Unity-endorsed author and speaker, for the last few years I have been writing weekly essays on what I call "living life in the divine flow." Ever since The Secret became popular, a number of my essays have been refinements on the ideas presented by The Secret's author, Rhonda Byrne. Similarly, Sacred Secrets is also an expansion and clarification of the Law of Attraction as it is presented in The Secret. It is a collection of essays by noted Unity authors, teachers, and ministers, and within its pages you will find spiritual truths and principles that shed much more light on the real secrets to living a happy and fulfilling life. Thank you, Rhonda, for helping a wider audience understand that our thoughts do, indeed, have great creative power. And thank you, Paula Godwin of Unity, for putting together a book that reveals the deeper truths that lie behind that power.

Although I enjoy most every book published by Unity, this was definitely one of the top three. I have been in metaphysics for over 50 years but this book presented new outlooks stated in a clear and understable way that even the newcomer could apply. I have underlined in different colors so I can refer to key concepts easily. I especially enjoyed the various authors commentaries explaining how The Secret has been around forever along with why it is not the "whole deal" which is one of the things that has bothered me since the original book was published. I plan on buying more of this delightful book for gifts. A quick and easy read that will help establish the mental/emotional frame of reference for Self-Realization and manifestation.
