A Danish classicReview Date: 2006-05-21
His breakthrough work, the Danish classic Pelle the Conqueror, appeared between 1906 (Part I) and 1910 (Part IV). It tells the story of Pelle, a poor boy, whose life in Part I shares much similarities with Nexo's. ---
"Pelle" has conquered the hearts of the reading public of Denmark and of the world. The first part of the book was filmed by Bille August; in 1989 the film won the Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film. ---
"The great charm of the book lies in the fact that the writer knows the poor from within; he has not studied them as an outsider may, but has lived with them and felt with them, at once a participant and a keen-eyed spectator. He is no sentimentalist, and so rich is his imagination that he passes on rapidly from one scene to the next, sketching often in a few pages what another novelist would be content to work out into long chapters or whole volumes. His sympathy is of the widest, and he makes us see tragedies behind the little comedies, and comedies behind the little tragedies, of the seemingly sordid lives of the working people whom he loves." (Otto Jespersen)

Stunning Photography of Ireland's CoastsReview Date: 2007-02-26
The photographs are a reminder of how varied the Irish landscape can be, and how beautifully green it looks from the air (and from the ground). Lighthouses, farm fields, sheep pastures, and small villages mingle with old forts and modern port facilities. This book is highly recommended to those who have been to Ireland, and to those who plan to go. The book provides a unique perspective on a lovely country.
not just another coffee table bookReview Date: 2004-05-23
This is a set of stunning aerial shots of the Irish coastline. While we took what we think are very good pictures, these are beautiful pictures that we cannot duplicate because they are aerial. They will be treasured reminders of many of the places that we visited.
If you're going to Ireland, been to Ireland, or just wish that you could go, and you love to hang out in coastal areas, this is a book for you.

Crowner John at His BestReview Date: 2005-02-01
While Sir John is away with Gwyn his bodyguard and his clerk Thomas de Peyne, trouble is brewing in Exeter, a rape has been committed on Christina Rifford, the daughter of a rich merchant. Sir John returns to Exeter to find the city in uproar with accusations flying around from the families involved. Then just before she is due to be married Lady Adele de Courcy is found dead underneath a pile of rubbish in the poorest part of the City. She also appears to have suffered a sexual attack. Suddenly Sir John has most of the influential people of Exeter banging on his door for justice.
The common factor in both killings appears to be the silversmith, Godfrey Fitzosbern, who by chance is Crowner John's next door neighbour. Can john protect the man until the truth emerges . . .
Bernard Knight is a consummate writer of the medieval novel and this is as good as any he has written.

Hand tool heaven!Review Date: 2008-11-02
This book (use Amazon's Look Inside for content) is an amazing presentation of how-to. No matter your level of expertise, you will learn from this. Between Jones and Aldren A. Watson you'll have a wealth of practical education. The instructions are actually complete and well written - something sorely missing in most of today's such books.
Those two authors' books are among my favorites, and I have dozens of shop books.

An engaging, frank, and essential account...Review Date: 2005-05-16
The author definitely delivers as he masterfully escorts the reader through the trials and triumphs of the era, both sharing and inviting critical scrutiny of events and outcomes. The depth and balance of the account give it the power to inspire, as well as enlighten, and thus, to play its own part in the unfolding story of the movement to transform how animals are viewed and treated. Definitely a fascinating and worthwhile read, as well as a thoughtful gift for anyone who cares about animal issues.
A thorough treatmentReview Date: 2005-02-19
Unti's work sets a very high standard for this kind of study. It deals with the Society's important efforts, at times frustrations, in addressing the issues of the second half of the 20th century, notably the use of animals in scientific research and the enduring issues of the slaughterhouse, trapping, and the substandard treatment of animals in zoos and entertainment. To its credit, the book does not shy away from controversy. Some of its most interesting insights touch upon friction among different organizations, radical trends in the animal rights movement, and growing pains within the HSUS itself. All of these provide a historian's view of a dynamic and changing movement seen through the perspective of one of its key organizations. This is a great introduction to an important segment of contemporary activism.

Psychoanalytic Treatment: An Intersubjective Approach - YESReview Date: 2007-08-23
Psychoanalytic TreatmentReview Date: 2006-05-27
The intersubjectivity field created by the interplay between the subjective worlds of patient and therapist, or of child and caregiver, is the organizing theme of Psychoanalytic Treatment: An Intersubjective Approach. The concept of a system of differently organized, interactive subjective worlds is shown to be invalable in illuminating both the vicissitudes of psychoanalytic therapy and the process of human psychological development. The authors postulate that clinical phenomena cannot be understood psychoanalytically apart from the intersubjective contexts in which they arise and recede.
Rich clinical illustrations amply bear out the authors' contention that an intersubjective perspective can significantly enlarge analysts' and therapists' capacity for sustained empathic inquiry and, in the same measure, enhance the scope and therapeutic effectiveness of psychoanalytic treatment. Psychoanalytic Treatment: An Intersubjective Approach will not only be of great theoretical interest to, but have crucial clinical consequences for, all students, trainees, and practioners in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

With that kind of recommendation, I sought the first book (Pelle the Conqueror: Childhood) through Amazon.com and read it. I am happy to say that it belongs with the most important pieces of historical literature in existence, yet at the same time is very readable. The main characters become cherished friends as you read about them. I can't wait to read the second volume (Pelle The Conqueror: Apprenticeship).
