When I was a little girl, my mother, sister and I would get on the waiting list every 2 weeks at the library for this wonderful book. The stories are sweet, funny and poignant; the illustrations divine. This is Waber's best book. I love it.

As a child I adored this book and the characters -- I found them so easy to identify with as they would try to work on character flaws such as losing mittens and slouching. The final story gives an important & powerful message in such a simple format that I have never forgotten it. In fact, I have recounted the story to many of my adult friends when they have been down about the trials of life. So now I'm sending it to my friends with kids. I'm certain they will like it as well.

Intellect slowly climbing out of the C++/Java/UML avalanche
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-31
This book takes a rather different approach to programming and software design. For example, the Association of C and C++ users says: "Not the usual programming/design book! Well worth considering for a second level software-engineering module ... which could then be followed by a third level module on formal methods." After being buried in the successive avalanches of C++, JAVA and UML technologies, this book has found a niche by offering a more generic and principled approach that is intellectually valid for university education and at the same time more user friendly than the usual formal methods texts. Used by several university courses as main text and by many others as recommended reading, the book is gaining more and more currency in academia. It is highly recommended for its stimulating concepts that bring the right degree of formal discipline to undergraduate software education. If used as a main text, it should be aimed at honors level students. For non-honors courses, it is excellent as a source of problems and state-based solution methods for any form of object-oriented programming or software development.

It is a very nice book to read. The subjects being explained very lucidely with lots of examples, and abstractions. In my own view every Java and C++ programmer should go through this book ,it will help them immensely and give them a clear understanding. thanks santosh

On the Side of the Persecuted

This novel is a stunning example of a well researched, thoughtful and emotional journey of one man searching for forgiveness, understanding and peace. The story is set in a time and place of history which is cumbersome at best. Our hero must contend with the ignorance of those around him, while trying to come to terms with his own inner conflicts. The author has done a wonderful job of clearly and eloquently describing the life and times of Jews and Gentiles in Medieval Europe. The reader is pulled into this life, rejoicing and suffering with the characters, and along the way learns much about life in the Middle Ages. The reader is provoked by the author to look inward and review his or her own beliefs on religion/spirituality and the purpose of life. This book is recommended for adults and older teens who are interested in Jewish spirituality, European-Jewish History, the Middle Ages, and a better understanding of how anti-semitism developed and still flourishes to this day. Highly recommended.

This book is an excellent presentation of what it must have been like living in Europe in the 15th century. I am Jewish, and I learned many things about Jewish history, religious practices and traditions, and about theology.

It is a very fast moving-story, with interesting characters that you can identify with and truely care about what happens to them.

The book informed and entertained me. I was not able to put the book down until I finished reading it. It completely kept my interest. I hope the author considers writing a sequel.

I suppose the book's main lesson is that people can change and that repentence is possilbe, but you still have to pay for your actions.

I strongly recommend the book.

I have been in the eye care profession for nineteen years. Over the years I have read and collected many professional books to continue my education, and expand my knowledge of the eye and it's function, . I refer to "The Ophthalmic Assistant" far more than any of the others books in my library. I use this book to prepare for lecture presentations, as well as hands on teaching and workshops for staff and students. It is the primary book I used to study for my C.O.A. and C.O.T. JCAHPO certifications.

Reading these poems will make you understand why Mandelstam is so highly regarded. All 50 are well-translated works of genius. It has the best version of his (suicidal) lampoon of Stalin that I have read in translation. Reading these will make you hungry for more of his work.

as good as it gets

It should be said right at the beginning: Mandelstam is perhaps the best 20th century poet. Joseph Brodsky maybe share his place, but Brodsky is also co-author of this book - he wrote great preface for it. This anthology of Mandelstam's poems is not perfect only because it is not a collection of his complete works. However, this is a book which contains some of his best poems. Both Mandelstam and Brodsky are great examples of how true are the verses by Marina Tzvetvaeva: "In this most Christian of all worlds/ All poets are Jews." The perfection of this poetry is an evidence of the fact how great poetry once was - not a long time ago. Unfortunately, today the world have very little poets even close to Mandelstam.

I have thought that if a kernel of the Jesus story was true, then it would be found in the parables. This book is a brief overview of the parables, including those from Thomas, with some explanation of why scholars consider some of them to be more likely the genuine product of a sage. There are any revealing facts in this quick read, unburdened by zealous interpretation--exactly what I wanted. This book does not try to explain the parables--that problem is left to the readers as an exercise.

Full of insights

I have had this real season of consuming Jesus Seminar books. R W Funk is marvelous in his frank easy-going style when going thru the parables of Jesus.

This report is one of many, which preceded the masterpiece "The five gospels" and which is wholly dedicated to the parables.

The report starts with the organistion and work method of the Jesus Seminar, an overview of the relationship between the gospels and the historic Jesus and his sayings and ends with the beautiful parables coloured according to how close or far they are to the historic Jesus. The more elaborate and theological the parables become, the more further from Jesus they have been written. I found the overview of the gospels very important: it is a very good picture of how far objective non-religious reserach has come. Besdies the four gospels, the gospel of Thomas and Hebrews are included among many others.

I do fancy this objective terretrial look at Jesus and his time, far from the majestic superman of the gospels. A Jesus that thru his parables want to give us humans an insight of what a divine conscience is, of how to be human and a good one and of course: to be a full individual, present today, NOW.

One of the parables that inspired me most what Thomas' about the woman who carried food on her head in a jar, which breaks. She doesn't know and find out when she's arrived at home. Jesus likens the divine conscience (aka kingdom of god) to this whole situation, the whole process and not only to the overflow of food, drinks etc but to this life.
