Superb, poignant photo-essay of African DPx2 Eclectic Archi.Review Date: 2004-03-23
What a uniquely valuable photo-documentary! Hundreds of high-quality b&w photos (plus 4 in nice Polaroid-transfer style color) of (mostly) Liberian (mostly) dwellings, from proud to humble, including interiors and details. Also some shots of the Southern U.S. 19th-century exemplars that the return immigrants remembered living in and (mostly) around, and served as the basis of an eclectic architectural vernacular. Also included are some floor plans, and a number of sensitive portraits of current residents (evidently descendants of the original builders in most cases).
I haven't read the text yet, but the pix are absolutely stunning. The vernacular is as unique as in many of the tropical islands and other mythic locations, but in addition, given the status of the builders as culturally twice-displaced persons, you can feel the struggle and the aspirations of these newly (and genuinely) freed people.
Now for the doubly poignant part: would these folks have stayed in the U.S. had they known what wholesale tragedy was eventually going to overwhelm their new homeland? That's anyone's guess, but we can't help feeling a tug at the heartstrings, what with the shocking reports out of contemporary Liberia (ongoing events had reduced many of the dwellings to shambles, a la Mauritius, even in 1988; we can only imagine their condition in the wake of all the current horrors).
This book is an absolute must for any African American library, architectural eclectic library, African cultural library, gorgeously-produced historical photo library. Slide it on your shelf, and give it some companionship by way of the African/world adobe book "Spectacular Vernacular" by Bourgeois and Davidson, and the delectable "Living In Mauritius" by De Marigny and Lagesse. Both are superb complements to this invaluable study of the artistic and cultural richness of African/American/African vernacular architecture.

Very specialized, but necessary background. Well written.Review Date: 2003-11-03
But I think it has real value for the businessperson who is going to be hiring lawyers to help him or her in the process of acquiring or being acquired. Just as this book provides some background on finance for lawyers, it provides a great deal of good background that every businessperson needs to know and where things can go wrong.
At over 1,500 pages it is a huge book. It is unlikely that you will ready it from cover to cover, but it is engagingly written. So, if you enjoy this topic I think you will find yourself dipping into it on a regular basis. There is an index and a list of all the cases cited in the book, plus a very interesting list of the authorities cited including their writings.
This book was originally published in 1986 with this second edition coming out in 1995. There have been some separate updates published since then, which can also be found on Amazon. I have not looked at the updates and found this book to be satisfactory for my purposes. It is interesting to get so much background on some very famous cases and see how eight years has offered new perspective and how much is forgotten in the popular consciousness. If you are involved in acquisitions I think this book deserves to be on your shelf. I don't know how you could think you have been diligent without consulting this standard text. I bought it as a recommended supplementary text for a course I took on corporate control as part of the MBA program at the Michigan Business School.

One could read the "other" M&A book by Carney, but one could also drink weak tea. Neither would be satisfactory.
The book is not for the faint of heart. The authors do not even cite a case for a couple hundred pages. The book endeavors to really teach what one needs if an understanding of this complex field of law is what is truely sought after. Therefore, it starts with a primer in economic theory and practices. Get out a calculator because if you went to law school to escape them, you were wrong. This is an highly important, and now, rare book. Both because it has been increasingly hard to find, and because the current trend in legal casebooks has been to water everything down. This book rasies the bar to a level other casebooks, students, teachers, and practitioners of law should strive to achieve.

The chapter on Rights and Responsibilities discusses prioritizing justice activities. Evans uses the example of separating the right to life from all other human rights. In the minds of those who engage in this practice, he writes, "the right to life--and this often means the right to be born--is the most important of all rights and should receive more of our attention than other rights.... Our challenge is not to prioritize human rights but to recognize all of them as necessary, and to defend any right that comes under threat."
The chapter on Option for the Poor and Vulnerable traces development of the Church's view on the obligation to provide for the less fortunate. In the years leading up to the reign of John Paul XXIII, we were urged to consider sharing a portion of our "superfluous" goods with the poor, as an act of charity. But in 1962 John XXIII introduced the element of justice, stating that we must determine which of our goods are "superfluous" in terms of the needs of others "and to see to it that the administration and the distribution of created goods serves the common good."

Flashes of insights on random subjects, biting descriptions of the petty politics of universities, asides on some of the most famous people and controversies of the 1940s-50s, and well-turned phrases abound in this collection of letters.
(Richard Davenport-Hines deserves the praise Hugh Trevor-Roper gave another editor of a collection of letters: "... it is very well and learnedly edited.")
Absolutely Delightful!Review Date: 2007-10-01
The letters are edited and introduced by Richard Davenport-Hines, and his substantial introduction to the volume is one of its finest features. However, the meat of the matter are the letters themselves, skillfully annotated and accompanied by some wonderful photographs, and presented in pleasant format in this volume. Also included as appendices are several letters that Trevor-Roper wrote to the American historian Wallace Notestein. A couple points bear emphasis. While there are no letters as such from Berenson, occasionally there are some excerpts included to set the stage for Trevor-Roper's letters to follow. I was very surprised to see that Berenson was far more knowledgeable in fields outside art history than I had imagined; in fact, he was quite conversant with the main themes of European and American intellectual history. Another point is that for those of us interested in (and puzzled by) the inner workings of the University of Oxford and its component colleges, these letters are treasurehouse of information. Trevor-Roper delighted in academic fisticuffs and delighted even more in explaining these strange rituals to outsiders such as Berenson. However, not all the letters are fun and games; some show Trevor-Roper at work as an historian, including dispute with some major figures such as J. Hexter, Christopher Hill, Tawney, and above all Lawrence Stone. So, from every vantage point, just as enjoyable a collection of letters as one will ever happen upon.
