Plenty to Sing and Ask About

My preschool-age boys have this book but we plan to buy a second copy to save because we all like it so much. The boys always ask to read and sing "Dinah!"-their name for the book because of the part in the song about Dinah, her kitchen, and blowing her horn. The illustrations are so interesting that my boys are as interested in the pictures as in the singing. When we finish singing, we often go back through the book and talk about all the wacky and wild stuff that is happening. Dinah's restaurant is truely a happening place and all the customers are thoroughly enjoying themselves as the food is flying around them! I definately recommend this fun book. A warning to you though: the song gets stuck in your head!

Sing while you check out Westcott's art!

Did you sing "I've been working on the railroad" as a kid? Now Westcott gives you a fun way to sing to your child as you enjoy her illustrations of a train trip from the city station through the 'burbs, farmland, and desert to Dinah's Cafe. Bright and upbeat!

A delightful fun-for-all-ages illustrated book by the author of Fears of Your Life includes some laugh out loud words like "Batouche" as in "I'm gonna kick you in the batouche" as well as sweet words like "You-ness" as in "You-ness is what makes you special and unique" and sad words like "Forcement" as in "When someone makes you go somewhere or do something against your will." The drawings are cute and loopy - highly recommended!

Pioneer Who Forged New Trails

Review Date: 2007-09-27
Dr. Rimland deserves a place of honor in the hearts of all people as everybody either has and/or is involved with somebody who has autism. Dr. Rimland, a pioneer in autism research has done an invaluable service by rightfully refuting the "refrigerator mother" fallacy. Dr. Leo Kanner and the notorious fraud "Brutal" Bettelheim harped on this fallacy and made parent bashing common. That hurt all and helped none. Common sense dictates that NOBODY would make their child autistic! And why were mothers blamed? People have fathers, so as to follow this illogical train of thought, if you want to tax somebody's parents for causing their autism, then trot out "the deep-freeze dad" syndrome to accompany the equally ludicrous "regrigerator mother" fallacy.

Dr. Rimlaund takes that crock of bull and uses it as fertilizer; by challenging it, he harvests a rich crop of plausible explanations for autism which is a neurobiological condition. It was Dr. Rimland who recognized the physiological and neurobiological factors in autism.

Misdiagnosis was not uncommon; many people with autism have been mislabeled as autistic behavior yielded false positives that led so-called experts to brand them erroneously with psychosis. Dr. Rimland coined the term "pseudo-wastebasket term" for any label that was used as a catch-all for behavior that did not fit any conventional pattern or existing label.

Dr. Rimland was indeed a pioneer and I think we should raise our glasses to this man for helping lead many minds out of the Dark Ages where misperceptions and blame in re autism flourished. It is thanks to his efforts in looking at genetic as well as environmental factors that people such as David Kirby, Dr. Tony Attwood, Dr. Travis Thompson and many others have used in their research. Although Dr. Rimland died in 2006, his work will be cheered on and greatly appreciated by countless people.

In 1964 this book revolutionized our understanding of autism

Bernard Rimland's groundbreaking book (published in 1964) debunked the shameful theory that autism was caused by "refrigerator mothers", a theory propounded by the since discredited Bruno Bettelheim and widely adopted up to that time by mainstream psychology. Dr. Rimland was the first to make the case that autism was linked to physiological factors including genetics, a theory later adopted by by mainstream medical researchers. This book is a landmark in the history of the disorder known as autism.

Of interest is the statement contained in the introduction to Dr. Rimland's book by Dr. Leo Kanner, the psychiatrist who 60 years ago first described the disorder and coined the term "autism". Dr. Kanner derides the label "autism" as a "pseudo-diagnostic wastebasket" for disorders that are not understood.

The disorder called "autism" is still not understood. Dr. Rimland, more than others, has progressed beyond his own work in the 40 years since he wrote his book by pioneering the view that autism is a physiologically based disease that is partially influenced by genetic susceptibily, but not caused by genetics. He has suggested that "autism" is triggered by environmental factors, including a possible role for vaccines and the consitituents of vaccines. Most importantly, his work has led to the development of biomedical treatment for affected children.

Everyone who wants to understand the development of our understanding of the disorder called "autism" should read this book.

Bernie Krause's albums have been an important part of our lives for nearly thirty years. We are so very pleased to learn that he is as facile in communicating with the written word as he is with sounds. When we were huddled in a little tent last year, 19,000 feet up Tibet's holiest mountain, we longed for something appropriate to read, while waiting for the snows to abate. Into A Wild Sanctuary would have been perfect. Now, stop reading this and go buy the book.

A Passion for Protection

Review Date: 2001-06-11
Bernie's earliest recollections of being fascinated by the sounds of nature set the stage for his discovery, in middle age, of his passion for documenting and protecting the environment. To make his avocation his vocation he had to create a whole new profession, and then sell the museums and zoos of the world on the concept -- but it is a testament to his genius and determination that he did just that.

His recordings are unequalled, and they speak loudest for his passion. However the stories here, which contrast the Rwandan jungle with his previous life, will make you understand when he says, "I feel much more comfortable and safe when I'm alone in a rainforest or a desert at night than I do when walking around the streets of Manhattan, Los Angeles or Paris in broad daylight, or enduring the pitfalls of academia or the business world."

Bernie is that rare creature, a man of genius and principle. In time he will become known as the Thoreau of his generation.

Veterinary Ethics

The field of veterinary medicine is expanding rapidly to include medical treatments that would have been considered impossible 20 years ago. Today, animals suffering from such things as cancer, joint diseases and severe trauma have a good chance of not only survival but of living a healthy life due to the advancements in veterinary medicine. The many changes in veterinary medicine, coupled with the evolution of new views on animal rights in our society over the last two decades, have created many ethical veterinary dilemmas and questions that have never been explored in a written context. Dr. Rollin has devoted his life to studying these issues and has been intimately involved in various laws and legislation involving animal rights and the ethics involved. This book examines a topic that has been largely debated but, for the most part, not covered in a text format. Dr. Rollin is well respected and speaks to many forums about these topics year round. He does a great job of presenting the cases in this book in an unibiased manner and encourages you to think about each of the important issues brought up by these cases. Each of these cases, by the way, are based on true cases and is beneficial to the understanding of what today's veterinarian faces. The book is not set up in a manner for leisure reading but is still very interesting and easy to follow. This is an excellent book on a fairly new topic of study and I would recommend it to any reader with any link to the veterinary profession or with any interest in animals.

We cheked this book out from our library and have learned a great deal from this book over the last two weeks!

Now we are going to BUY it. What a great resource!

There are many ways to make a fire, start a fire, kinds of kindling, etc.
Instructions and tips are in great supply here: making and cooking on a "hobo stove", making your own mess kit, how to make different shelters, how to set up different tents, making a latrine, whittling techniques, cooking over a fire, recipes, protecting your matches, sharpening knives and axes, refletor fires and ovens, making a teepee, and the list is quite long of additional things to learn.

The photos and illustrations may be black and white, but who cares? This book is very good and I highly recommend it.

Enjoy that time outdoors with your children. Teach them these skills while they are young!

It tells everything you need to know about camping!

I first read this book when I was 11 years old. I was extremely interested in learning absolutely everything there was to know about camping, hiking, woodcraft, etc. I was delighted to find this book on a dusty shelf at the back of the library. It tells you how and what to pack for your trip, be it a day hike or a month long camping trip in the backwoods. There are many recipies for lunch/dinners that can be cooked all in one pot, as well as the traditionals like some-mores and lots-mores. The book tells you how to build different kinds of fires, depending on what type of fire you need: fire for light, heat, cooking, or the sit-around fire. It also tells you how to keep your fire going all night, and even how to start a fire without matches!!! There are many kinds of tents the book talks about, how many people they sleep and what type of trip it's for, as well as how to construct make-shift shelters from trees, blankets, logs, and canoes. There is a section of the book that tells how to make little extras, like cabinets, picnic tables, etc. This book has so much info-- even how to predict the weather accurately!!! This book contains ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING that you would ever need to know. I HIGHLY recomend it! It's advanced enough for the old-time camper, but also ideal for the beginner, like I was at the time. Great for both adults and kids. The Junior Book of Camping and Woodcraft caused me to want to go out on my own backcountry adventures, and I did!

A Research Tour de Force

This new volume from G. W. Bernard is truly a masterful compendium, beautifully researched and documented. Its topic is one that all too often is overshadowed by religious polemics and partial analysis. Bernard, however, falls prey to neither of these limitations as he plumbs the documentary evidence and previous research of others to offer intimate details of the issues revolving around Henry VIII, his spouses, his realm, and his "remaking of the English church." Carefully and methodically, the author moves through the issues involved, while offering fresh insight and the evidence to support his contentions. From personal letters of the monarch and official papers of state, he delves deeply into every available source to give as complete a picture of the time as humanly possible. If the English Reformation fascinates you, as it does me, you will find in this fine volume a treasure trove of information. For those looking for something lighter, or for an introductory volume, this probably is not the place to start. But as a reference or as a detailed study, I can imagine no better place to turn. To Bernard, I say "bravo"!

A Magisterial Work

At well over seven hundred pages (including a hundred of fine printed notes), G.W.Bernard's history of Henry VIII's reformation of the English Church is likely to be the gold standard on the topic for years to come. The prose is lucid and the author's mastery of his subject matter is beyond doubt. The reader should be warned that this is not a work for someone approaching the topic cold. You don't need a post graduate degree in Tudor studies to enjoy this book, but it assumes the reader is already familiar with the general history of the period. Some limitations I should note. Bernard says little about England as part of a European community. What I call the "Planet England" school of historiography is unfortunately unavoidable in most English language histories, and this is no exception. Also Bernard avoids the vast topic of how people in Tudor England viewed the world. On this subject I recommend E.M.W.Tillyard's "The Elizabethan World Picture." Nearly fifty years old and small enough to put in your pocket, it is still the best summary of this important matter. Law was essential to how these people thought, and Bernard is too cursory here, which removes a whole dimension. We see what was done but without a full understanding of why. Also the language has changed appreciably over the last 400 years. When quotes are given from Henry VIII's contemporaries, even Bernard tends to view them as if coming off the BBC News. People used language VERY carefully back then, with a richness and precision that has been sadly lost. Some effort might have been made to regain it. Caveat lector. But with these limitations in mind, this book is still essential for anyone seriously interested in why we live in the modern world and not under the rule of the Popes.
