Brings the staid practice of philosophy to life
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-24
One doesn't usually associate bikers with philosophy - but here are twelve bikers who also happen to be philosophers to refute the image of the biker as uneducated or unthinking. In associating philosophy with recognizable, everyday concerns, HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND PHILOSOPHY: FULL-THROTTLE ARISTOTLE brings the staid practice of philosophy to life, joining others in the publisher's series to attract new generations to a practice often presented as a dry art of past thinkers.

Philosophy Major and Harley Rider Loves this Book
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-18
I was an undergraduate philosophy major with all of the earnestness and seriousness that implies. Years later, after getting my MBA, starting and running a successful business, and buying a Harley to ride, I came on this book. It reminded me of all of those seminal college conversations late into the night with girls I was trying to score with and to impress.(Usually the girls were not impressed!)

This book is fun because it does not take itself too seriously and is written by philosophers-riders who can relate the topic of philosophy to a motorcycle, especially a Harley. The book is funny, irreverent, and a little Monty Python-like. It helped me to remember all of those philosophical issues I had thought I'd forgotten over the years -- e.g., what is the best way to live one's life? -- and it started me thinking about philosophy while riding my Harley.

You can not find a finer book which exemplifies what American football is all about. The grit, drive, and determination of the Harvard Crimson, who play the game, not for money, or recognition, but for the love of the game. I love this book and recommend it to all sports fans and football fans alike. FIVE STARS! Great information amidst all of the awesome historical and modern football photos. And how can you not love a team that had actor Tommy Lee Jones as an All American offensive guard! Great photo of Tommy Lee Jones in his Harvard Crimson uniform. Buy this book today!

Reading about Harvard Football tells the reader that Ivy League Football is a pure version of American Football. The book is about college football the way it is ment to be played. I feel it also tells the reader to follow college football teams in their area even though they way not be rated in the so "called" top 25!

A very rational and factual book
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-23
This is one of the best books I found on the subject. The writer is also a practitioner - a rare quality among many so-called writers. From his pictures, he LOOKS like he practices what he teaches (he looks lean, healthy, and clean-shaven). The main text of this book is free of religious symbology; Theos writes his experiences in a very factual, matter-of-fact style. He tells you where he has practical experience, and limits his teaching to that experience. Most other books make pointless excursions into Hindu mythology and Sanskrit, and thereby put off many non-Hindu readers.

His approach is like a breath of fresh air in a subject rampant with unnecessary mystical excursions. He provides an excellent roadmap of how to progress (you can adapt his regimen according to your needs). Reading the book, you are struck by a fresh viewpoint: Yoga is not just about flexibility, but more importantly, of strength and power.

If you are tired of books by bearded holy men with potbellies, who don't look like they are capable of picking up a winning lottery ticket off the street, then do try this book.

Relates the experiences of a Westerner who studied and practiced yoga in India and Tibet, eventually disappearing (possibly killed) in 1947. I appreciate his many many references and footnotes to classic yogic texts, comparing the practices as mentioned in different texts and how it was taught to him. A very authentic and straightforward book of hatha yoga-- a classic.

The Perfect Book For Anger
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-02
Reading this book was very stimulating but yet very refreshing and informative. The book provided significant theoretical information, but more so presented it in a manner in which the parent sas well as the practioner could easily understand and apply it in working with children with anger.
In addition, many of the concepts and techniques about handling anger can be applied, to a degree, both to children and adults across the board. Thus as a teacher and psychotherapist, I highly recommend this book be used as a guide and resource reference for parents, teachers and other mental health professionals.

Tragedy has never read so smoothly

Review Date: 2002-07-10
Along with Arthur Miller, Bernard Malamaud helped to redefine the tragic hero for the 20th century. Gone are they days when the fall of kings were the only things that could move us, now we can see the tragedy in the death of salesman or the destruction of a baseball player. Kathleen Ochshorn's words paint an acurate portrait of Malamaud's works, a must have for any collection of criticism.

It's brilliant If she wrote it!

Ah, Malamud.... his poetic prose can affect even the most flinthearted reader. Who can forget his wonderful tale of that baseball player who was really good. You know, they made a movie out of it. Here, Kathleen Ochshorn delves into Malamud with her lantern of Diogenes in such a thorough and brilliant manner that, after reading it, I found it impossible to believe that Ochshorn was the author. I told my co-workers how I felt it must have been written by someone else. But alas, it appears that she did indeed pen this beautiful tome. I congratulate her here, unshackling myself of the burden of grudges. To you Ms. Ochshorn, I tip my cap. Huzzah!

Excellent Introduction to Sophocles
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-12
First, a caveat: Knox very emphatically examines Sophocles on the basis of what Sophocles actually wrote. This has the virtue of accuracy and of keeping out fringe theorizing, but the vice of adding a modest Greek component. Knox always puts the Greek in a parenthetical (i.e., you'll never fail to understand a sentence because of the Greek), but there is a lot of it. If you don't know any Greek, this might encumber your reading somewhat.

Having said that, _The Heroic Temper_ is a fantastic little book. Knox spends two chapters discussing the "Sophoclean Hero" in terms of all seven surviving tragedies, showing that the same character types, the same narrative tropes and even very consistently the same vocabulary is used in all seven. He compares and contrasts Sophocles and Aeschylus (especially with respect to "Prometheus Bound") and analyzes the Sophoclean hero in terms of Sophocles' political context and religion.

This alone is eye-opening and ought to precede any reading of Sophocles, but Knox then goes on to discuss in greater detail "Antigone" (two chapters) and "Philoctetes" and "Oedipus at Colonus" (one chapter apiece). I wish I'd had this book in college -- it's worth more than all the lectures I heard on Greek tragedy.

The six chapters were in fact originally six lectures, and (Greek parentheticals aside) the book retains a verbal, even conversational tone. Well written, insightful, powerful -- the book is a winner.

An Enthralling Examination of the Sophoclean Hero

Review Date: 2003-06-10
Recently, I've read a fair number of books relating to Greek tragedy and of them all this is the best. In it Knox offers a profound and compelling examination of the nature of the heroes of Sophocles' plays. His arguments are persuasive, being based on a study of the actual words that occur and recur throughout the plays. Thus, there is quite a bit of ancient Greek quoted in the original; fortunately, it is all translated so that the argument can be easily followed by those who have no Greek.

Unlike most scholars, Knox writes beautifully. The English is unhampered by theoretical jargon -- there is no mention of hermeneutic circles, metatheatre, metanarratives, or
metapsychology. In an age when Martin Heidegger appears to be the model of style in scholastic writing, Knox's elegant
and clear writing makes for a refreshing change indeed.

Another refreshing change is that he treats Sophocles as though he were an ancient poet rather than as though he were an ancient structural anthropologist with an interest in depth psychology, something which is almost eccentric nowadays. Moreover, Knox's passion for Sophocles is palpable and infectious.

So, an excellent read. If you read only one book about Sophocles, this is the one I would recommend.

Bernard Fitpatrick is a Minnesota man and was drafted in April 1941. He left for the Phillipines in September of 1941. He was captured when Bataan fell and eventually ended up in Japan. This is a good book, and is not unreservedly horrible. He tells of Japanese atrocities but also of human and good Japanese. The story is artlessly but engagingly told, and is a war memoir I am glad I had a chance to read.

My kids loved reading & singing along with me. The whole story is also a song, the chorus going, 'Mud, mud, glorious mud. Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood, so follow me follow, down to the hollow, & there we will wallow in glorious mud.' Very funny!

This book is a little more advanced then the book that came with your 'scope. It covers all the basics and gets a into a few advanced tricks-of-the-trade.

If you are new to using Oscilloscopes, then this is a great place to start learning what they are and how to use them.

If you are an experienced bench technician, this is a good refresher if you need to re-awaken dormant skills.

I bet you know some of his photographs. Startet as an stills photographer in the BBC George Rodger became famous with his pictures made for the LIFE magazine, was a co-founder of the Magnum Pictures agency and was later active in Africa and Asia. The book concentrates on his work while and after World War II, starting with his pictures of british people under the german Blitz, the air raids against british towns and civilists. Then the liberation of Europe, France, Italy ... the horrible pictures of the first Concentration Camp freed by american troops (Bergen Belsen), journeys through africa with the first pictures of the Nuba Tribe (there is a whole book available about this), often claimed to be much better then the later works of Leni Riefenstahl, Asia - the time range goes from the forties to pictures from Africa from 1979. George Rodger died in 1995. If you're interested in reportage photography then this is a must have.
