Each star is a Tarahumara Indian whose souls are finally extinguished

Men have three souls and women have four souls, because women are the source of life. The Tarahumara call themselves the RarĂ¡muri. They live in the Sierra Madre Occidental of northern Mexico where they retreated from the invading and bearded Spanish 500 years ago. (They call outsiders "Chabochi"; a "person with spider webs across the face.") RarĂ¡muri means "foot-runner" or "he who walks well"; they are excellent long distance runners, very skilled on their narrow mountain trails.

The Tarahumara live in the Copper Canyon, or Barranca del Cobre, a group of six canyons, in places deeper and altogether larger than the Grand Canyon in the US. They constitute one of the largest indigenous peoples still living in the Americas, and have maintained many of their traditional beliefs and customs. Nevertheless their religion contains elements of Roman Catholicism, and Coke and instant Japanese noodles are now part of their every day diet.

This book, especially the second edition, is recognized as the most comprehensive study of the Tarahumara. The text is very sympathetic and many of the photographs are superb.

"The National Geographic" for November 2008 has published a wonderful series of photographs and a description of the challenges facing the Tarahumara, which include a modern airport, an expanded resort area, and the cultivation of illegal drugs.

"Geographic's" article echoes the text of Tarahumara: Where Night is the Day of the Moon:

"The choice of the Sierra Madre as a strategic retreat from the Spaniards all those centuries ago is both the gift and the burden of the Tarahumara today. Their ancestors weren't cowards or pacifists; histories recount violent rebellions among Tarahumara in less remote mission and mining centers, where colonists used them for brute labor while trying to press them into European-style village living. But as a people, the Tarahumara survived largely because of what a Sierra priest described to me as a gift for the evasive maneuver--and here the priest clapped his right hand over his left and then slithered the left out gently from underneath, like a fish slipping through a crack in the rocks."

I was fascinated to read this excellent introduction to the Tarahumara several years ago, and even more impressed to revisit it after reading the "Geographic's" excellent article. The magazine also published a GeoPedia article features online resources and an extensive bibliography.

Written with respect for the dignity and unique culture of the Tarahumara Indians, an indigenous people that live in the Sierra Madre Occidentals (Copper Canyon region). Lots of photographs (both black and white, and color). Although a paperback, it's quite large (pages are about 9"x11"). A "must-have" if you are going to visit, or have visited, Copper Canyon, Mexico.

If you like to have some insights regarding your travel destinations, then this is a must read prior to visiting the Copper Canyon. The Tarahumara are a very interesting indigenous group, but they will be very shy around you, so the only way you'll know (and hopefully understand) their values is by reading this excellent book.

In the northwestern portion of Mexico, in the mountains known as the Sierra Madre Occidental live the legendary Tarahumara. This is an indigeneous group who have been one of the most successful to resist the onslought of western civilization, beginning with the Spaniards conquest and continuing to this day. Seeing the pictures in this book is like taking a step back in time; they are a culture spared the shadow of time. The Tarahumara are known for maintaining their customs and traditions in spite of of an ever encroaching civilization and tourist trade. The Tarahumara are phenomenal runners who traverse , climb and descend the mountains that reach 9,000 ft. beginning as children and contuinuing into old age. Known for their long distance running they are incredible endurance machines that come from a genetic pool that used to carry letters 600 miles! A contemporary good runner can run forty miles with a steady pace over six to eight hours. This book is a fabulous tribute to the majesty of a proud people, complete with over forty color plates and nearly as many powerful black and white photographs. The book is not only a picture book but has a marvelous text that explains and details how this group has endured the harsh natural conditions as well as the invasion of "outsiders" who tried to indoctrinate them with religion and cultural mores. The simplicity of their home construction in the ranchos and the traditions that continue are an anthropoligsts dream. Some of the cultural traditions are fascinating and a wonderful testament to mankind. This is a good book to read prior to a visit to Mexico and journey along the Copper Canyon. The book aIso includes a bibliography and a glossary for further clarification and further knowledge. I would recommend finding the hard cover edition that is out of print if possible because the photographs are amazing and timeless reflections of a distant and persistant people. The color and black and whote plates are as magnificent aas the people they depict. The oversized edition is a cultural treasure. Regardless of the edition I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the people known as the Tarahumara who believe that a mans soul dreams and is manifested and works in mysterious ways at night while his body sleeps.

I have used this cleansing for 20 something years now and do it faithfully every year with the guidance of this book. Actually This book has saved my life plus many others that I have helped with this book. Obviously I find the book very informative unlike one other person that gave a negative review. There always has to be a negative one in every group I guess. This is the one program that does really get results if you are interested in being healthy. I do use Jensen's older book because I like the program better than the newer years. It seems to get better results for me. thanks charlene

The information presented in this easy-to-read book are vital for anybody who is interested in taking charge of his own health and get free of the mental and physical slavery of "traditional" medicine, based on suppressing symptoms with drugs and surgeries. I did the 7 day-fast with 2 colonic per day, and for sure is to describe with common words the explosive vitality and joy that get inside you right after the fast...and it last! Everything comes easy now, even the toughest decision. I'm looking forward to my second fast. If you enjoyed this book, go for this one: The tao of health, sex and longevity, by P. Reid. I just can't stop re-reading it! Riccardo

I'm sad this book is out of print. Ten years ago I read this book and decided I needed to cleanse.

You will see dramatic pictures of what comes out of people after they take pancreatin and do a colonic.

I did this pancreatin cleanse 10 years ago and could not believe what came out. Essentially, when you eat the standard American diet, you are not eliminating, and the food starts to build up on the walls of your colon.

Year after year, you build up more waste in your colon until it is a tar-like consistency. This book shows pictures of what comes out of people after a cleanse and all the different diseases that were cured by cleansing.

There are step by step instructions to help you understand the process.

This book is a classic and should be in every home!

If you love Tokyo and love toy culture this is a great resource. Old favourites like Tokyu Hands, Parco and Kiddy Land are in here, along with a whole bunch of lesser known beauties. Nice pics of shoppers and merchandise, as well as additional info explaining some of the strange mascots you encounter. Upfront basic information and clean maps means I'll definately be taking this with me next time I go exploring in Tokyo.

This was used as a text book in a psychology class I took, so I expected it to be boring. It wasn't at all. In fact, it was fascinating. It made me sick to my stomach, laugh, and think critically throughout. Do the experiments! I would highly recommend this book to anyone, especially those who want to examine their own "reality." The only complaint I have is the lack of information behind why we react the way we do to the experiments. There wasn't a lot of citing other people's studies. It sort of felt like you were in his class, just getting his ideas as well as select comments from McGrane's students.

A wonderful and startling book. If you actively engage yourself in Dr. McGrane's work, you will not only come away having learned something about yourself, but possibly even have a new understanding of what learning IS. Professor Mcgrane is the ideal teacher, and it comes through in this book. He teaches by allowing space for students to discover "ways of seeing" for themselves. This book does not merely increase our store of knowledge, but actively reconfigures the way that our knowledge is percieved

For Calvin, union with God is by faith. It would be a mistake to attempt (as the Mannermaa school has done) to suggest that there is no forensic element to soteriology. However, neither Luther or Calvin made soteriology only forensic, as the Mannermaa school has suggested. It is both/and: both forensic and unia mystica. Overall, a very interesting and informative read.

intelligently written and great for everyone who loves st. bernard. books written by bernard are difficult to read, you really have to like this guy, he is very flowery and does not speak to us in our time. not contemporary. so in this book you only get small doses of bernard and it is very good. unlike leaders in the catholic church bernard does not shrink from giving priority to faith over good works. catholics today stress being good deed doers. god accepts us because of belief in Christ. this emphasis and other medieval thoughts present in bernard's mystical writings are a pleasure to read being examined by the scholarly author.

I first saw William Scott's work in a smaller book on British painters
and sculptures. I was attracted to his strong simple style.
Being impressed, I saw this large monograph book was available.
When it came, I was extremely impressed with the complete, detailed
story of his life ...as an artist ,I was looking for inspiration, and
the large color reproductions are breathtaking and leave you more than
satisfied. The book takes great pains in showing you the studious
progression of his painting, his truth to himself. Just to read of
his life or watch the progression of his work is inspiring. I don't know
if I have seen so many color examples in an art book before and if color is
important in your work, this book gives you the disipline that will help.
Great price on an important book.

This may be the most awesome and dazzling art book of the over 100 I have. It arrived yesterday and I spent three straight hours with it and will spend many more. Hundreds of lovely color reproductions on very heavy stock, a truly in-depth study of the artist and his work, with a completeness that even includes pictures of Scott's models and of his wife's sculpture. The book is divided into sections - all well documented - that deal with various aspects of Scott's work, including a separate one devoted to his drawings. The only complaint I have is the author's constant use of "WS" in all references to Scott.

A monumental work on scientifc mentoring!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-06
How many books are there which talk about scientific mentoring? So very few. This book gives vivid portraits of how top-flight scientists pass down their "research genes" by mentoring their apprentices. This book gives the readers the inside look of the research lives of these prominent scientists and their disciples. Of course, not all things are glorious, but throughout the book, the author brought out the theme again and again that mentoring is essential to the producing of next generation of outstanding achievers.

This book should be read by every bright and ambitious graduate student and postdoc. Do you want to achieve greatness? Do you want to learn how to do great research? Attach yourself to a great scientist! Julius Axelrod, the 1970 Nobel Laureate, has a saying: "99% of the discoveries are made by 1% of the scientists." Sociologist Harriet Zuckerman reported that the single factor that most clearly differentiated Nobel laureates from outstanding but lesser scientists was training with another Nobel laureate. Thus, the importance of mentoring cannot be overstated for a young budding scientist!

This book should be read by every top scientist in the world. Your legacy lies not just in your individual achievement, but also in passing down your "research genes" to the next generation and thus greatly magnifying your legacy.

The author should be applauded for such a monumental work!

Scientific excellence is inheritable!

Several years ago, my former mentor circulated this book in the lab. Until quite recently, my friends still found me quoting from it while talking about scientific ideas. Now, after reading the book for many times, and studying the characteristics of great mentors around me, I conclude that it's a marvelous book. Anyone who plan to have a bright scientific career should read this book. My only dissatisfaction is the book is so old. I demand a new edition or a sequel! And, I want more examples of such lineage of excellent scientists as described in the book.Surely, it's book that I will share with my student.

An excellent look at how mentoring in academics works.....

While seemingly on a mundane and complicated subject (pharmacology and its researchers), it is an easy read for any layman and very, very interesting (especially on the topic of malaria medications and their discovery and problems)... Very interesting how hitching your star to the right person can make your career...and how pettiness and back-stabbing can be so cruel and counterproductive... A very, very good read for anyone even remotely interested in science...

It combines the biographical information with personal accounts and stories that really give you the feeling of getting to know the amazing George Balanchine. Some may have read other books, like Gelsey Kirkland's "Dancing on my Grave", that give a bad impression of Mr. Balanchine, but I promise if you read this book, you will have a change of heart. Although no biography can be completely free of bias, this author describes Mr. Balanchine in a truly honest and real way. I really do feel like I know Mr. Balanchine and I promise that if you read this incredible book, you will too

I lived in Rackham West, gave flute lessons in "The Mistake House" (the first picture in the book), and my wife, Nancy, and I were married in the College Chapel. Bob's book is a wonderful compilation of information on the creative genius of Bernard Maybeck. If you ever get to Elsah, Illinois, you must visit the campus! Oh yes...buy the book first!! :-)

A great example of the creation of an academic village, Principia College's orginal dormitories and buildings bring to mind buildings in the English countrside. As a student, I lived in a couple of the dorm buildings designed by Maybeck and it was a great pleasure to experience the many different styles of rooms incorporated into the buildings.

A casual glance at the buildings would lead visitors to believe they were partially constructed of wood. In fact the entire buildings including exposed "beams" were made from concrete.......so bomb proof that they were considered to be an adequate refuge from an atomic attack on St. Louis.....or so legend had it. Definitely sturdy enough to withstand epic water wars and tennis ball fights. Ah....college!

Of course, one of the great pleasures of student life was to either tour with or overhear from a room in the chapel where I would study the great Dr. Charles B. "Chuck" Hosmer wax rhapsodic on Maybeck's work. If you are interested in historical preservation and architecture, Hosmer was a preminent scholar in the field and his "Presence of the Past" as well as the two-volume "Preservation Comes of Age" remain seminal works in the field. God speed, Hos!
