Dr. Kovach's book is very concise on a subject matter that could easily take many books to describe. It is a very hands-on approach that managers or would-be managers can use immediately.

I found Dr. Kovach's book, People Power: Getting Things Done Through People Using Good Management Techniques, utilizes a very thoughtful, effective approach to teaching managers how respect for all employees creates positive results for the entire organization. It's a classic example of the old saying, "What goes around comes around." Dr. Kovach uses a humorous, allegorical approach to teaching a subject that can oftentimes be boring and overly technical.

It's a quick but very effective read. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Pliny (23-79 AD.) "If a man makes water upon a dog's urine he will become disinclined to copulation." (Yeah, but what about the Dog?) He also suggests that; "If a woman's loins are rubbed with blood taken from the ticks upon the back of a black wild bull, she will be inspired with an aversion to sexual intercourse. (Yes, and so too, the tick gatherer, and tick blood spreader - I would imagine.)
This book The Pill by Bernard Asbell besides being full of useful and energizing information is more than interesting. It is a social as well as a religious experience. One thing is for certain - trying not to have babies has been going on for centuries; thank God.

The Pill- an extremely interesting and entertaining read

I almost couldn't put this book down and read it in a few days. Asbell does a really good job of making the story of the Pill at once comprehensive and entertaining. He develops all the various characters involved in the story: priests, scientists, activists, doctors, funders of research and ordinary citizens in a way that makes gives you a sense of familiarity with their personalities and psychologies. He shows how risk taking, serendipity, and passion led some to succeed and left others virtually anonymous. He gives fair treatment to many of scientific disputes that went on during the invention of the pill and introduces us to the future of contraception. The way he describes science is very accessible and also honest; he does not idolize scientists or science and shows the pitfalls involved in research.
I don't think I fully appreciated how revolutionary the Pill was before I read this book. It has made me much more grateful and informed about the options I can now make. He presents the story with the gravity it deserves.

A wonderful account of the scientific, medical, political and social contexts surrounding the research and development of the oral contraceptive pill...something I realize that we take for granted and revolutionized our view of ourselves and our way of looking at the future.

This is a pretty good book and doesn't deserve to be out of print. The author's writing technique isn't scintillating but the book is very readable nonetheless. I was a little disappointed by the lack of biochemical details of how the pill works but other readers may see this as a blessing. The book does a superb job of making the people involved come alive. The descrption of a pre-birth control pill world which is unimagable to most people is simiarly excellent.

"142 Insider Marketing Secrets" pretty much sums up what's inside this great book. Although small (175 pages) it provides very detailed and specific recommendations.

Not all of the 142 secrets are earth-shattering, but there's more than 100 valuable ideas. The four authors compliment each other nicely. If I were to advise them before publishing I would have wanted only to read Bernard Zick's recommendations because he's such a whiz on marketing in this area. But surprisingly, I found the other authors to add significantly to the focus of the book as they had to face how to market themselves in their specialties.

This is a book that you will want to review at least annually, perhaps as you plan the next years activities. There are many unusual techniques or ideas in this book that I had not seen elsewhere.

Power Marketing for Consultants: 142 Insider Marketing Secrets Used by the Nation's Top Consultants, by Marjorie Brody, Allen D'Angelo, Bill Kerley, and Bernard Zick unveil the power marketing secrets that justify why top consultants are making four times as such money as average consultants and have more time to enjoy their own lives. The authors of Power Marketing for Consultants: 142 Insider Marketing Secrets Used by the Nation's Top Consultants (Power Marketing for Consultants) are all highly successful consultants who enjoy what they do and are highly respected in the consulting arena. Brody, D'Angelo, et al. have taken thousands of working hours over the last twenty-five years and clearly stated their marketing and consulting philosophy in their book. The authors' research has shown that there is a large group of consultants on the lower end of the success curve and those who fall among the nation's most successful consultants. Successful consultants are storyteller, magicians, and highly successful in their area of expertise. The "magic" that successful consultants seem to perform is a result of well organized and highly tactical "power marketing." Power Marketing for Consultants is organized into three major marketing topic areas: Power Marketing Strategies, Power Marketing Tactics, and Power Marketing Maxims. Within the three topic areas each one of the authors highlighted their own marketing issues and practices. Just as the title implies there are 142 tips or suggestions in the book; they serve as their own chapters within the three major marketing themes. It is easy reading and is very direct, nothing is held back. When comparing Power Marketing for Consultants to Peter Block's book Flawless Consulting, Second Edition I believe Brody, D'Angelo, et al's work to be more organized and targeted towards a more professional audience. The target audience reached by Brody, D'Angelo, et. al. are young professionals or those who trying to gain further success and insight in their own consulting career. Robert B. Cialdini, author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, noted that, "Power Marketing for Consultants provides a rich source of valuable experience and insights for enhancing the consulting process." The authors of Power Marketing for Consultants have many of the same goals as Cialdini, they are result driven and have determined the only real challenge in life is getting people to comply with you. Getting compliance can be done several different ways, however, Brody, D'Angelo, et. al made several marketing suggestions to help consultants establish and maintain both valuable and beneficial relationships. In the "Power Marketing Strategies-Strengthening Your Foundation," portion of the book there are several helpful suggestions made. For example, writing down your goals, make a marketing log, keeping money in the bank, and obtaining better clients are just a few of the helpful suggestions given. "Power Marketing Tactics: Powering It Up," section made reference to joining professional and community organizations, hiring a public relations professional, getting into cyberspace, networking with non-competitive consultants, serving as a Master of Ceremonies, and writing articles for professional journals. Lastly, Brody, D'Angelo, et. al focuses on "Power Marketing Maxims: For Enduring Success" here they reinforce how important it is to be reliable and responsible, having a good sense humor, and understanding the Law of Cause and Effect. Brody, D'Angelo, Kerey, and Zick have taken their insider knowledge to what has made them successful and laid it out on the table; their work in this book clearly mirrors their success in each of their various areas of expertise. The information available in Power Marketing for Consultants: 142 Insider Marketing Secrets Used by the Nation's Top Consultants, by Marjorie Brody, Allen D'Angelo, Bill Kerley, and Bernard Zick is practical, sustainable, and time tested. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in being respected among the nation's top consultants.

First a disclaimer. More than thirty years ago, Dr. Lown was one of my teachers at the Brigham and Women's Hospital where I was a young, inexperienced fellow in cardiology. And what a privilege it was to watch this master clinician, consummate healer and deeply moral mentor at work.

A few years later, with Russian cardiologist Eugene Chazov, Dr. Lown founded the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, which, within a few short years was awarded the Nobel Peace prize. "Prescription for Survival" is Dr. Lown's gripping memoir of that time, an amazing chronicle of how a few committed doctors set out to confront the specter of nuclear holocaust, organized tens of thousands of supporters and helped save civilization from annihilation.

This is a "must read" book. It's message of hope, of the centrality of mass action, of the necessity to speak truth to power, of persistence in the face of daunting challenges, is particularly pertinent at this juncture in the history of our planet. At a time when once again events seem to be spinning out of control, when not only rampant wars, but catastrophic climate change, ecologic degradation and unbridled militarism all menace our survival as a species, the lessons of this book need to be promulgated, adopted and utilized if we are to leave a habitable planet to our children and grandchildren.

Buy "Prescription for Survival," tell your friends to buy it, and take its lessons to heart. As Dr. Lown writes at the close of this absorbing, hard-to-put-down book: "This memoir is ultimately a call to action. Only those who see the invisible can do the impossible. This book makes visible a wide terrain wherein action for another world fit for human beings becomes both challenging and possible."

On the eve of this historic presidential election, Dr. Bernard Lown has given us a momentous, lucid, and gripping book.

By all counts, Lown is an extraordinary man: one of the great physicians of the 20th century, a Nobel Laureate, an inventor whose work has saved thousands and thousands of lives. All that is true. What's less well known is that he is a STORYTELLER; a master of narrative. He's a writer in the tradition of Chekhov and the other great physician-writers of the last century. The dude can spin a yarn.

It's rare for so keen and incisive an intellect to convey itself this warmly and skillfully, and with this much humanity. (You don't see Noam Chomsky writing books like this). Lown is keenly aware that one of the first tasks of both a good doctor and a good writer is to compel his subject's attention.

And the book is so timely, so important. As the planet approaches a tipping point the likes of which it hasn't seen, we are facing into the realities of climate change, oil shocks, daunting economic and political instability, resource shortages, a soaring global population, an increase in militarism and state-sponsored violence, and on and on. It's difficult to hold in our minds the magnitude of what we're facing, and its even more difficult to imagine that we can actually do anything about it.

That's why Lown's book is so important. It shows that we--any of us, all of us--can dare to take action, can dare to make a difference. The book tells the story of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nucelar War, from its origin as an idea in 1980, to its recognition by the Nobel committee in 1985, at the height of nuclear tensions between the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. Within that striking story, Lown makes larger points about the ways in which hope can emerge in the darkest hours, and how much is possible when citizens take action within and across national borders.

This is a powerful book. It radiates a kind of moral gravitas that's palpable. Lown writes out of a deep sense of urgency, but he does so beautifully, with a feel for language and image and rhythm, and a sense of the importance of these things. After a lifetime of clinical practice as a cardiologist, attending to the rhythms of the human heart, Lown has learned his way around it. He writes from that heart and to it--about matters of great consequence, with great wisdom.

An Extraordinary Book by an Extraordinary Human Being

One doesn't expect an eminent cardiologist to speak out on nuclear war, to organize a global network of physicians to confront the issue, and to make its enormous risks clear to the world; and ultimately to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. This wonderful book by that very cardiologist, Dr. Bernard Lown, recounts this compelling saga. It is a powerful book by any standard, made even more so by the grace, fluidity, and richness of his prose, surely the equal of our nation's finest writers (further enriched by apt quotations from the great poets and playwrights of the ages). Every caring, concerned citizen of the globe will want this book at the top of his or her reading list. (Full disclosure: I was a patient of Dr. Lown's for some 20 years; I give him credit for the fact that I'm here today to praise not only his idealism but his skill as a physician.)

I'm someone who often purchases important books, skims them quickly and then shelves them, with every intention of getting back to the task of educating myself about the subject. Somehow, I never manage to open the book again, so it sits there among other such volumes, while I turn to literary efforts that may be more trivial, but promise to be more fun. So I was surprised when I started flipping pages to find that the author had turned this critical issue into a detective story. Instead of being bored by didactic lessons that I agreed with, I found myself reading until 2AM to follow the story of these brave doctors who wouldn't take no for an answer. I thought I knew a lot about the subject, but this story surprised and fascinated me, made me laugh and made me angry too.

When Tarantino blew up in the early 90's, there were slews of quickie books written to cash in on his enormous popularity. This is not one of them. Jami Bernard has done one of the most thorough and detailed biographies ever done on a celebrity. She misses nothing. The only problem this book has is the same problem almost all Q.T books have- they were all written 2 to 3 years into his career, so there is no recent information. This is one book I'd love to see updated and re-released.It is a richly detailed and fair account of Tarantino's life and career up until 1995.

I just finished reading this book, and it is a fine work of reporting. It interviews people from both sides of the Tarantino debate (those who love him and those who hate him), and allows you to draw your own conclusions from all the statements. It covers Tarantino's life from his birth up to the moment when he made Four Rooms.

Too bad this book is out of print. I hope there will be a reissue in the future, probably covering the latest works of Tarantino.

Excellent, well written book, with a lot of information.

Jamie Bernard's book is simply amazing. It covers Tarantino's life from childhood till about 1996. The book is well-written, and goes deep into detail and uncovers Tarantino's life as hyperactive kid, movie theater regular, fatherless child and genius moviemaker. This is the single best book ever written about Quentin Tarantino. No other book delivers such great information, biographical facts and stories about the making of his early movies and involvements in projects. If you want to read a good book about Tarantino, get this one first. It's the best!

If I could write a letter to Monsieur Verge I would thank him for sharing his passion for vegetables and transporting me to France each time I open this beautiful book. The recipes are outstanding and although some may intimidate the novice cook, I urge you to try them. The results will delight and you will find they are not as difficult as you may have thought. A favorite book and a pleasure to look at with a nice glass of Chardonnay. But not for long...you'll soon be back in the kitchen!

So good in fact are these recipes that I was inspired to travel to France just to eat in Verge's restaurant. Sound stupid? If you make even 10 of the recipes in this book you might not think so.

Saint Bernards from the Stoan Perspective explains in language anyone can understand what those of us that aren't breeders and long time Saint Bernard owners need to know. It has helped me see what I need to look at when I buy my next saint. Breed standards aren't the easiest to interpret until you understand the terms. It's all spelled out in here.

I loved the Sharpe Chefs, and am looking forward to Sharpe Chefs II. Not only are he recipes great and easy to follow, but there is so much more here for Sharpe fans, and those interested in the Napoleonic era.

If you want to find out more about the story behind the cookbooks, Sharpe Pointe brings you the inside story of how a group of, talented, resourceful, and determined women took a fondness for the Sharpe series, and its star Sean Bean, and turned it into a very successful charity cookbook. So successful in fact, that Sharpe Chefs will soon be join ed by a second book, Sharpe Chefs II.

In the first installment of this multi-part series, the Sharpe Chefs' founder tells the story of how a casual conversation about exchanging recipes mushroomed into the search for a publisher. Curious? Go to the link below to find out more:

This book is excellent. Not only are the recipes easy to follow, but each recipe has a picture to accompany it, so you can see how the finished dish will look. Lots of information on osteoporosis, some interesting facts on life in Regency England and several very amusing introductions to the different sections of the book and many of the recipes. And you know you are supporting a good cause.......remember research will benefit osteoporosis sufferers all over the world.

This isn't your ordinary charity cookbook - as a matter of fact, it's not an ordinary cookbook at all!
If you like the Sharpe series of books by Bernard Cornwell; if you like the Sharpe film series starring Sean Bean; if you enjoy trying out easy-to-prepare dishes or learning more about the Napoleonic Wars and Regency England (information delivered more than a bit tongue-in-cheek!) . . . you'll love "Sharpe Chefs!"
Conceived and created by twenty-six women from around the world, "Sharpe Chefs" features more than 100 recipes, including contributions from the actors, producers, and director of the critically acclaimed BBC television series, Sharpe. Endorsed by Sean Bean, with a forward from Bernard Cornwell, "Sharpe Chefs" is a beautifully designed, lavishly illustrated volume that will inform, amuse, and inspire you to try out the dishes - from "Lord Wellington's Crab Dip" to "Sharpe's Christmas Apples".
Best of all, this really is a cookbook for charity. Every penny of authors' profit is going to support the National Osteoporosis Society of the UK - whose research into the prevention and treatment of a disease that effects 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men is shared around the world.

I bought an edition of this book in the early 1990s when I began my own little comic-book company. I found it on my bookshelf this evening and after leafing through it searched for it out of curiosity on Amazon and was amazed to find an updated edition for 2008. (The dated section on computers was amusing considering how far computers have come since then!)

This is an outstanding book, and I was delighted to see the price remains incredibly affordable. Anyone wondering about the nuts of bolts of starting and running a small business, regardless of the field, will find this a great primer. Even after I launched my business, this book remained an important resource and reference for me for many years. As you grow or require more detailed guidance, esp. connected to your field, you'll likely eventually explore other books and resources online. But this book is a great introduction, very entertaining, very "nuts and bolts," and something you'll continue to go back to as you go through the process of starting and running a business.

I bought an earlier edition of this book after starting my first business 24 years ago. Unfortunately, I was too far along and made many mistakes which could have been corrected had I read Kamoroff's book before starting the business. The business survived but I would have done much better in the early going had I learned more before doing.

I am about to restart my business life and learned my lesson. I checked out this book at the local library and found that, despite the many changes in the business environment today, he has kept on top of most of the changes and this book is still an excellent guide.

Two caveats:

1. As a previous reviewer noted, his advice on business structure is debatable and perhaps a bit weak and his advice on internet business is definitely not as thorough as needed for someone who intends to make internet presence a major part of their business.

2. This book is orientated toward those who are starting small in a true sense of the word -- minimal background, funding and personnel. In fact, Kamoroff questions the need for major business growth for many small entrepreneurs -- and may be right in doing so. If you have the background and capital to start on a larger scale (though still officially a "Small Business"), much in this book is not for you and you will need other resources too.

This book is a goldmine of information for the wanta-be entrepreneur to use when researching and drafting his or her biz plan.

I loved this book. It's been around for a while. So it should be well outlined and well written. This 2008 edition is the 32nd version and the 63rd printing. The book is 8.5 X 11 and the text is arranged in two columns on each page. There are some illustrations and pictures interspersed through the book to make it more visually appealing and informative. There are 7 sections and 44 "chapters" as follows:

I. Getting started (1-8)
II. Bookkeeping (9-16)
III. Growing up (17-21)
IV. Taxes (22-29)
V. Home business (30)
VI. Your business (31-43)
VII. The ledgers (44)

1. Getting started: Basics
2. Business location
3. Financing
4. Legal structure
5. Choosing a business name
6. Licenses & permits
7. Insurance
8. The Business Plan
9. Warming up to an unpopular subject
10. Business bank accounts
11. Bookkeeping simplified
12. Recording income
13. Credit sales
14. Recording expenditures
15. Calculators and adding machines
16. Financial management
17. Business growth
18. Hiring help
19. Partnerships
20. You, Inc.
21. Limited Liability Company (LLC)
22. Business expenses
23. Self-employment tax
24. Retirement deductions
25. Other small business tax issues
26. The Internal Revenue Service
27. Federal information returns
28. Excise taxes
29. State and local taxes
30. Home business
31. How to balance your bank account
32. Balance sheets
33. Professional help
34. Husband and wife businesses
35. Multiple businesses (more than one business)
36. Import and export businesses
37. Buying a business
38. Freelancers, professionals and consultants
39. Legal and management
40. The Internet
41. Managing and marketing your business
42. The future of small business
43. The annual update sheet
44. The ledgers

I thought the coverage for Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) was weak. There are single member and multi-member LLCs and they can be taxed as either a sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation depending on their membership and tax elections. And I would not have promoted S corps to the extent the author does in this book. I also thought Chapter 40 regarding the Internet could have been better since it only covered a few pages of the book, if that. And Chapter 41on marketing was lame, too.

The author is a CPA who has had his own CPA firm. As a result, I didn't really expect the Internet and marketing chapters to be complete and very informative. But that doesn't stop me from complaining! All in all, except for the above complaints, this is a really good book for the wanta-be entrepreneur to get hold of and study while they are turning their business idea into a business plan. 5 stars!

PS. You can figure out how to market your small business by studying the marketing techniques of your new business' competition. There's no need to reinvent the wheel. Just go with what is proven to work. And maybe tweak the marketing system your competitors use. If you do this, then you will agree with me that this book is a goldmine of information.

I am impressed with the Stonehenge and Valley of the Kings books for a variety of reasons:
-crisp, clear, appealing layout
-inclusion of maps with modern cities and related sites
-timeline, glossary and index
-photos and drawings have clear informational captions
-interesting aspects of the topic are explained on full-page "asides"
-use of words like "probably" and "one theory" to explore how our understanding of these ancient sites changes as archeologists discover more
-the mixture of the historical and legendary with the technical and physical information
-interviews with the archeologists, which personalizes the subject and makes it real and possible for students

This is the best book on Stonehenge. The text is concise and extremely well written and documented. The photos of the sites, stones and artifacts are beautiful. I especially liked the anciet time-line.
Ms. Bernard answers the Who, Why and When about the constuction of Stonehenge. Anyone interested in archeolgy and problem-solving will devour this book.
I am looking foward to more Digging in the Past Serries.

Stonehenge is a comprehensive and intelligible book that delves into the past explaining facts plus the fallacious legends that have always surrounded this archeological phenomena. It helped me further understand what present day discoveries have been made' and how the legends grew up around Stonehenge. The interview at the end of the book with Ms. Malone was educational and informative. The thorough glossary was also very helpful. I would highly recommend this book to any novice or person already interested in archeology.
