This is the definitive work on Berg I believe. This is Adorno at his best. You might already know that Adorno is notoriously difficult to read- as in his Philosophy of Western Music- but this is wonderful.

not entirely vintage Adorno, yet lightyears beyond academia

Adorno first met Alban Berg in Frankfurt during a festival of new music in June 1924. Excerpts from Berg's opera "Wozzeck" was being performed. Adorno ultimately studied composition with Berg but did not pursue a career as a composer rather Adornor became a brilliant philosopher of negative dialiectics with a profound work on aesthetics, his last major statement. In these short essays on Berg written over the course of his life, Adorno is at his weakest link. They are analytical in content traversing all of Berg. The "First Piano Sonata", The"Lyric Suite" for string quartet. Although brilliant, the complexity of thought we usually encounter in Adorno, dense loci of continuous cross-referencing, and associations of images interspersed with other artisitic genres is not to be found here. And in terms of pure musical analysis this is fairly basic representations, and ultimately not Adorno's possessive thinking realm.Academia today hates Adorno for his philosophical more socially-bound emphasis away from just this kind of note-for-note, moment-to-moment analysis along Schenkerian dimensions. Still there are conceptual meeting places in the center as George Perle's excellent work on the two Berg operas. And academia has much to fear given Adorno's impressive legacy of his writings on music . In this brief volume Adorno's thoughts on Berg's opera "Lulu" is the high point. And in a way we meet the more personal, conversational Adorno, a rare treat.

I read the original biography when I was in college(circa 1988). I can't even remember who wrote it. I checked it out of genaral stacks. It's a great story. Dude lived out a fantasy. Got paid to play baseball for 13 years. Hob nobbed with DC's elite. Served his country. What a great guy. Then I read these reviews. Who cares if he's a Jew. I'd forgotten (until you bookworms reminded me). I forgot becasue it wasn't important. Debate his contributuions? There's nothing to debate. He did what he wanted and when duty called, he laid it on the line. He's a hero. No need to discuss it's importance. I would have loved to have had a beer with him. Rest In Peace, Moe. Signed, Mike Twigg. Ordinary average guy who has a life and an occasional beer. PS-Moe briefly played for the Cleveland Indians. AKA "The Tribe". Don't even think of getting PC with me.

Great Man, loved Baseball and his country.

This is super cool book. The whole time reading it, I wished they made it into a movie. Berg's father was well known doctor. He wanted Moe to be one also, like Moe's brother. But Moe loved baseball to much. He joked how he could speak all though languages, but couldn't hit in any of them. Let see, Moe goes on a spying mission for the government to Japan during a tour with Babe Ruth. He takes photographs atop a building which were used during bombing attacks. Moe goes on a mission to find out how close the Nazi's are to getting the bomb. He dresses up as a Nazi and spy in one of there plants. He is instructed to kill a professer if that professer's knowledge will assit the Nazi's. Berg may not have of brought victory to the Redsox,(who could?) but he was one of team USA's MVPs during the big one! I highly reccomend this book.

This is a fascinating and useful account of man's philosophic and religious mindsets toward the animal world, and rides the tide of the animal rights movement, with a history of same since the resurgence of activism in the sixties onward. A good companion to Singer's Animal Liberation, the book shares with it what I would consider an excessively solicitous attitude toward Darwinism, although the latter provides indirectly the characteristically openended injunction to see the continuum of man and animal brethren. In fact, how account for the evolution of this emergentist trend in history toward the post-carnivorous human? This apart, the splendid portrait in detail of the confusion over man-animal relations fills the void in one's awareness of this issue, and one senses the onset of a one-way valve here: there is no going back. The last excuses for the passage have fallen away in an age of scientific genetics and nutritional research. The man in the business devouring the flesh of animals is a morbid spectacle of an extinct 'species', goodbye to all that.

Fascinating. Thought provoking. Unique. A mine of info.

This is a fascinating book. It traces the whole history of the relationship between humans and animals and the development of the movement in recent decades to protect animals. Philosophers have led the current revival of interest in animal rights. In Europe the issue has gone further and a mass of new legislation has been passed in recent years to protect animals. If animals can suffer why should they not have rights? But why does Europe lead the US on this? Why is America being left behind? Are Americans less rational or less compassionate? Ryder addresses these issues (which are rarely addressed elsewhere). This is one of the main reasons I find the book invaluable. He also gives a wealth of scientific evidence to support the case for better treatment and respect for animals. I really think that Ryder's voice is worth listening to - after all, he gave to Peter Singer the idea of 'speciesism' and provided much of the material that Singer used in his classic Animal Liberation way back in 1975.

This is one of many books I have read that were written by Yehuda Berg. (My first was "The 72 Names of God," which I found very illuminating.) In "Beyond Blame...," probably the most important theme I have come away with is that we need to own up to our actions. If we make a misstep (and we all do at one time or another), it is far better if we own up to it and resolve that we will remember and do better next time. If we fall into the rut of saying that it really wasn't our fault, it was someone else who "made us do it," we only compound the mistake and makes things worse. We heap chaos on ourselves by doing so. If we take responsibility, we are in fact rewarded down the road.

This is a must for anyone who works with children. Not only do the authors explore solution work in general, but tailor it for children. They include specific exercises if you need a little help getting your creativity flowing. I would highly recommend this book for students, interns, and practitioners, basically anyone who works with children on a regular basis.

Excellent and readable

Berg and Steiner's well written book is my new most valuable resource. As a graduate student who wants to focus on child and adolescent therapy, but in a program that focuses more on adult family therapy, this book was very helpful to me. Steiner took Berg's solution focused therapy and used it with children in a creative way. They give case studies and discuss some more common issues you will see in therapy, such as ADHD, trauma, abuse, etc. They also discuss the therapy in general and how to apply it to children. If you are planning on ever working with children, this book is a must, even if you don't necessarily agree with everything they write.

This picture book contains wonderful, colorful photographs of each & every cow on display in the Kansas City Cow Parade 2001. It's no substitute for seeing the cows in person, but it is useful as an orientation before visiting the cows, a post-visit reminder of the cows, or an opportunity for folks who can't make it to KC to see how delightful the KC Cow Parade is. The book is organized by location -- cows in the Plaza area are grouped together, cows in the Crown Center area are grouped together, cows at the KC Star building are grouped together, and so on -- so you know exactly what to expect before you venture off to see the cows.

If you've never seen a Cow Parade -- artists/sponsors are provided with a standard model bovine to decorate as they see fit. Some of the models are simply painted -- designer Michael Graves painted a "Light Blue" cow with reddish flowers with Target-logo bullseye centers; there are cows painted with large florals, there's a "Teal". Others are wonderfully ornate, like the "Moo-maid" mermaid cow in a fountain in Crown Center.

Many of the cows involve Kansas City themes -- like jazz ("Jazzy Cow", "Jazz Moosik" -- with saxophone horns, "Cownt Basie", "Charlie Parcow", "Jazzily Blue"); the Wizard of Oz ("Yellow Brick Roadie","Dorothy", "Tin Cow . . . from the Wizard of Ox", the "Cowardly Cow", and "ScareCow" -- the Cowardly Cow looks just like Bert Lahr, jowls & all). There are barbecue theme cows ("Barbecue Bull", "Mixed Plate Blue"), Liberty Memorial (the only active WWI memorial in the country) cows ("Liberty Moo-Morial Monument")and other KC-specific cows ("Shuttle Cow" -- a takeoff on the shuttlecocks sculpture on the art gallery lawn). Some are just plain fun -- like "Cow-Moo-Flage", which features a standard holdstein with a chicken cox & comb, tail , wings, & feet attached, and "Cowntertop", a cow covered in samples of laminate, with a sink in her back, "Moo-lyn Monroe", "Cowzilla", "Cowlvador Dali," "Cowculus." My personal favorite of the show -- "Buttons & Bovines", featuring a cow covered in buttons.

Kansas City hosts a wealth of creativity and artistic talent. We're home to Hallmark -- many talented Hallmark artists show their skills in the Cow Parade. Cows designed by other local artists are also wonderful & clever. This is a great book -- a book you'll want to again & again as you marvel at the cleverness of the talented designers who converted plain cow models into intriguing works of art.

Review Date: 2001-04-25
This book does a marvelous job of laying out the Biblical cautions toward debt and encourages ministries to trust God for ALL their needs. All this without coming off as condescending to those ministries that have already chosen to use debt.

You can tell the authors desire to help ministries seek God's will.

Very well written!

A Must for Pastors, Elders, Deacons, and Bldg Committees

Review Date: 2001-01-10
A great resource to prayerfully read through when your church is considering whether to borrow or not. The authors address common rationales for borrowing and address each one scripturally and pragmatically. Our western culture embraces financing for everything. This book will challenge our cultural default position of getting loans for church buildings and activities.

Bottomlines: (1) Borrowing is not a sin, but it is risky, (2) the Bible only warns AGAINST borrowing and debt, never advocates it, and (3) God gets all the glory when we trust Him to provide in His time.
