I didn't enjoy the authors writing style at all. The story was passable but the cliches and terrible style kept getting in the way. The character development was weak, and frankly the characters weren't very interesting.

I like gangster era stories but I'd pass on this one.

I found this book abandoned at an airport, when
I was stuck during a long layover. Normailly I wouldn't have read it but I had nothing else on hand.

Parts were mildly entertaining and it helped to pass the time. Better than just sitting and staring out the window for hours. I skipped over the boring spots and hunted for the action.

I'd stick to Mario Puzo if you want good gangster reading.

I put the book down a third of the way through. I was bored. The story is so-so, not really worth spending the time to finish.
If I'm going to read a work of fiction I'd rather read a better novel. The 'good guys' weren't worth rooting for, and the bad guys were the usual mix. Ho hum.

Terrible writing, poorly done

I'm facinated by the Underworld, especially the 'good old days' with the famous gangsters. Sadly, this book is very poor. It's not just the content but the abysmal style. The writing reminded me of a 16 year old boy who's just bought a thesaurus and is trying to impress everyone with his broad repetoire. Why use two words when you can use eight? Why not throw in outdated or odd ball descriptive phrases? Why not use phrases stright out of a Harlequin Romance? Its almost as if the author read Mario Puzo and tried to copy his style and failed miserably, while adding his own terribly chosen vocabulary. I was shocked that books this bad are printed nowadays. Does the publisher really expect it to sell?

Author should take a course in creative writing

I gave up the struggle to get through the book halfway through. The cliches killed me. The writer must be a 15 year old high school boy based on the lack of style and large number of trite expressions. "Racoon faced"? Give me a break. Finish high school English before trying to write another book.

The story itself was so-so, I'd give it 2 stars, maybe 2 1/2 if I was generous.

I was hoping this book would help prepare me for exam 70-293 but it certainly did not deliver. The material was very general and did not go into nearly enough detail to prepare you for the exam, not to mention pieces of it are incorrect! If you are going to use this book make sure to use supplemental materials as well. In fact, don't use this book at all since it's just a waste of time. I don't know how this book was ever published since it's so off the mark...

Concise but riddled with errors - and omissions
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-07
I'm halfway through this book and have recorded a total of 10 typos and a dozen flat-out errors. A typo is relatively harmless, but errors include things like saying the correct answer was "C" when in fact it was "B" or visa-versa (answers 4 & 5 on page 355), asking a question like number 7 on page 63 when the material is not covered until page 226, displaying a dialog showing a configuration that allows all IP addresses except 1, but claims to deny all except 1 (page 250), or just flat-out misinforming the reader, such as by saying things like a subnet of 255.255.254.0 can be expressed in CIDR notation as /21 (page 334) or that a misconfigured subnet mask will always result in NO other machines being reachable (page 497).

Even the practice exam I took says that granting Change permissions to an NTFS folder is a correct answer. We all know that NTFS folders do not have a Change permission, only shares do.

The book leaves you wondering what is true and what is false, although it is at least 90% true, so I guess I can expect to get at least a 90% on the exam, right?

Overall, it reads well, doesn't beat around the bush too much, and is not a terrible choice of study material, but very sloppily edited.

As a follow up: I understood all of the material in the book well and did well on the practice exams, but barely passed 70-290 and got a 693 on 70-291 (need 700 to pass). Passing the NT 4.0 MCSE or Win 2000 MCP using Exam Cram was a breeze by comparison. This book just doesn't cut it.

The errors in this book are to numerous to count The majority of the errors are editing errors. However, I found many factual errors also. If you want a good book to study for the A+ exam buy the Michael Myers book.

Decent book, but too much trivia

This practice book contained a lot of good, well-organized review questions and some helpful answer guides. However, the book also seemed to focus on a good deal of trivia not needed for the A+ exam (like what was the first computer to use a mouse, how many pins on a 486 chip, and so on). Overall, it is a decent supplement for practicing for the exam, but goes beyond the practical a little too often. There may be a better review book out there.

This test prep is confusing and filled with wrong answers. The author makes the questions much harder then they will be on the exam. The exam, according to CompTIA is designed for technicians with ONLY 6 monts experinece in the field. Some of the questions in this book is for people with at least a couple of years of experience. And the wording of these questions is very confusing, almost like babbling. Don't waste you bucks and save tons of confusion by not bothering with this book.

I bought two books this and M.Myers A+ cert book. this seemed the most valuable. With all the info out there you can't learn evrything, so start by learning just what will be on the test. Best feature was its description of correct and incorect ans. at end of each chapter. The cheap price does not reflect the books quality. Hint: if you have not memorized allIRQ's, Modem commands, and mem address's of LPT1,2 and COMM1,2 your not ready to take the test

The only good thing about this book is the answers to the questions came with explainations. If I had to rely on this book to pass the A+ exams I would never pass. The questions are poorly written and hard to understand. The terminology used is different from that which is used on the exams and in other books. If you must buy a book, buy the Myers book and/or the dummies book. Too bad there is no option for 0 stars

A total misrepresntation representation (A JLG admirerer)
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-04
This small book of dialogues between Godard and Youssef Ishaghpour is, to put it mildly, a total rip off. In their dialogues Godard furnishes us with no more than 20 pages of
comments to Ishaghpour's exceedingly lengthy comments and questions. After just viewing Godard's excellent new film, "Notre Musique" this was a real "downer." The mention of the Archaelogy of Cinema in the the subtitle and "The Gaze" as a chapter title led me to believe this would have a tint of the the thought of the great french social philospher Michel Foulcault (he is mentioned once or twice).

I thought a good interviewer is supposed to evoke meaningful responses from his subject. Ishaghapour doesn't let- or Godard doesn't want to- get more than a few sentence reponse in.

Another annoying element to this borderline fraudelnt presentation is that the Amazon description gives the impression this is significant tratise on Godard's thoughts on the twentieth century's political and cultural events. Rather Ishagapour is given a forum for his thought and his interpretations of Godard. Worse still, Godard doesn't even
display his critical acumen or irreverance and is led like a lamb by his interviewer,

I'm not saying that Ishaghapour doesn't have some worthwile comment's plus an article at the end of the book. But wasn't this supposed to be about JLG- duh?

I sincerely hope I am wrong. I'm definitely sending this one back. Come on now. How dumb do the publishers think we have become to think that this book is anything but a misuse of the master's name.

There are some intereting testimonials by major figures and institutions on the back of this book by "The Village Voice," Pauline Kael...but none refer to this book.

A real dialogue

Review Date: 2005-06-20
All along his life, Jean-Luc Godard has looked for interlocutors, partners. The form of the speach, discourses and specifically dialogues (exchanges, dialectics, maieutic...) is a seminal research in his work and his global practice. Several of his best films are only dialogues, as "France Tour Détour" to name only one. But he rarely met people who dare to act as full interlocutors, not as disciples or as simple fans. Ishagpour, a very acurate, cultivated, elegant French-Aegyptian critic, expert on Welles and modern cinema, is one of these rare persons, and the result is excellent.

Deceptive

Very quickly- I also bought this for Godard's comments. I would'nt have spend so much for such a brief book otherwise. Strangely almost all of Godard's comments are cut short(lots of ......after his coments). The editor (of the fine journal Trafic) is almost always quoted in total. Also, I found Ishagapours comments predictable. I lost my interest in post structuralist & post colonial theory years ago. Once the post Baudrillard,Virillo, Lyotard generation starts writing it seems "prewritten":all the comments seem no more than illustrative of the various theories assumptions. Godard speaks/writes impressionistically with brilliance. It's a style of writing attacked by the critics who praise his work. Impressionistic writing (also derided by conceptulists like Kosuth earlier) I think allows for novel insights. It's too bad a dazzling impressionist is truncated by a self absorbed editor. Any interview where the subject has 1/5 th space of the interlocutor is odd indeed. Worth buying if you love Godard and can afford so much for only a few pages.Godard's comments get 5 stars. If you can read French there is a brilliant volume of Godard on Godard featuring more recent writings(than the earlier English language volume). Why it is'nt translated is a mystery to me. Why texts like this are instead is also a mystery.

A complete waste of paper!

In recent weeks I have become most concerned about 2 books by Capt. Dan Berg because the content simply does not match their titles.

I have been an active diver for well over 30 years and am regarded as something of a shipwreck authority within the UK. In short, I study and then write about shipwrecks for a living. I do not, however, claim to know anything about any shipwreck - anywhere in the world, which I have not studied in great detail. Sadly, the modern shipwreck diver is being openly ripped off by so-called authors who get into print without checking every single fact before so doing.

The work of this author is full of factual, grammatical and other errors. Even the names given to several species of fish are simply wrong.

Any person purchasing a book with the title; "Tropical Shipwrecks: A Vacationing Diver's Guide to the Bahamas and Caribbean," would expect to learn far more than is provided by this so-called author. Truth is, he appears to have rushed into print with a little information picked up from somebody who heard it from someone else who got the whole story from yet another person.

Instead of using this product as an opportunity to "teach" the vulnerable diver (i.e. the diver who is hungry for information) something about the subject, Mr Berg has revealed his complete lack of knowledge by simply repeating false details which may have been published elsewhere. I would suggest Mr Berg's time would have been better spent in learning something about the basic fundamentals of shipwreck research.

A Coffee Table Book

This book had some nice photos and did include a bit of information on the wrecks and dive sites, but is definitely not a book for a serious wreck diver. For example, no information is given on the locations of the wrecks so anyone interested in seeing the wrecks is forced to find a local dive operation. Since most local dive trips cater to casual, recreational divers who normally follow the recommendations of the operator and have little input on the destination anyway one wonders about the usefulness or potential audience for this book.

A good book to wet your appetite!

I have read almost all of the Bergs books and those penned by Daniel Berg solo. The Bergs are well known wreck divers. The book has many really exellent photos and hits most of the highlights of Island wreck diving. It is broken down by Islands and gives a little blurb about history and conditions for each wreck. What the book lacks are, the exact locations of the wrecks and the accessability, e.g. shore dive, dive charter, 1 hr. trip or 2 hr. trip? A good photo book to get psyched up for your vacation.

This book tells us nothing about Kabbalah, or about reincarnation. Rather, it only tells us about Berg's brand-new religion that is attempting to create.

Frankly, all of Berg's books on Kabbalah are full of terrible translations, censored and edited texts, and horrible commentary. His "explanations" are rejected by all Jewish authorities, Orthodox and non-Orthodox, religious and academic. Berg is attempting to create a non-Jewish and for-profit version of Kabbalah, and it is just embarassing. Instead of reading his nonsense, please check out books on this subject by real authorities and good writers:

Read, for instance, "The Jewish Mystical Tradition", by Ben Zion Bokser; "Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism", by Gershom Scholem; "Zohar: Annotated & Explained" by Daniel Chanan Matt and Andrew Harvey

I would also suggest "The Wisdom of The Zohar: An Anthology of Texts", Ed. Isaiah Tishby, and translated from the Hebrew by David Goldstein.

I bought this book with no prior understanding of Kabbalah. Since I am interested in studying various religious ideas, I figured that this would be a good book to start with in helping me to understand just what Kabbalah is all about.

Because of my lack of kabbalistic knowledge, I am unable to critique whether the info. contained in this book is an accurate reflection of the beliefs held by kabbalists today; however, I must say that at the end, I was still asking myself "so what are the major tenets of this religion?".

Although it's clear that reincarnation is a major belief, much of the info. in this book seems convoluted, and it just plain didn't make much sense to me.

I came to this book with an open mind, hoping to find some insights I could incorporate with my current beliefs, but I honestly feel as if I gained very little understanding of this religion, and no usable insights.

Great book to begin with

This was one of the first books I've read on the subject of Kabbalah 10 years ago. After reading extensively from many other sources I still would recommend the "Wheel of Soul" to anyone new to the Kabbalah and the concept of reincarnation in Judaism. Leaving a reader with more questions than the answers, this book propels him to search further, to examine his life, relationships (see possible causes for ones problems), current events, and his place in the Universe as well as take responsibility for ones actions. Deeply moving experience. Very easy to read.

There are a lot of poems in here but you look far and wide for something really good. I mean, sure, there are the people we already knew were good -- C.K. Williams, Eavan Boland, Frank O'Hara and et cetera et cetera -- but with a book this big you want a few surprises, you want to find some new stuff you didn't know about before. And for me, that didn't really happen. Philip Larkin's "Aubade" is maybe the best poem here -- and maybe the best poem about death ever written -- though what it's doing in a book of AMERICAN poetry I can't figure out (I guess it was just too good to exclude). They put Seamus Heaney in, too, which makes me wonder why they left out Paul Muldoon -- he's been living in New Jersey for years now, and writes poems as good as anything in here (and better than 99% of it). Go to your local bookstore and look through this monster -- maybe you'll have better luck than me, and find something thrilling -- but don't buy it.

My mother bought me this book as a gift and it inspired me to try making one of the "little quilts" that was featured. The instructions on the quilts and the bunny accessories are very easy to follow, even for a sewer with limited talents. However, don't be mislead by the title of the book. You will NOT find any Bunnies by the Bay patterns inside. The only patterns you will see are for accessories like a lace bag, felt bird, etc., along with the quilt patterns. This would be a good "gift book", but if you're looking for patterns, shop elsewhere.

While the book cover and illustrations are charming and well done, this book is not at all what I expected. The non-quilt projects are very basic. The quilts are very plain including several nine-patch quilts. Also, the quilts shown in the pictures are not of the highest quality (non-straight piecing and quilting). I do not recommend this book at all.

Greek Denial of the MACEDONIAN Name!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-06
The most important thing to remember about the "Macedonian conflict" is that the Greek position has changed dramatically over the past decade. Official Greek government policy was that Macedonia did not exist. When Greece took over Aegean Macedonia in 1913, they killed, tortured and ethnically cleansed hundreds of thousands of Macedonians. They changed the names of people, villages, and landmarks from Macedonian to Greek in their attempts to eradicate the Macedonian name. Two things to remember:

1. It is ironic that Greeks now "love Macedonia" when they tried to eradicate its very existence.

2. If Macedonia has always been Greek, why did the Greek government deny its existence until the 1980's?

An interesting presentation of the complex poly-ethnic history of Greek Macedonia. Nonetheless, the portrayal of the Greek state as operating a somewhat cultural genocide seems to prevail throughout most of the essays found in this book. Yet, the question of why the so-called "minority" Hellenic culture became the dominant force does not seem to be fully addressed. It seems that the admission of a dominant Greek presence throughout Macedonian history is currently not the norm and out of flavor in the world of academia.
