The work in this book is something that I think the majority of people could relate to. It's very powerful, intense and depressing but also...very beautiful. The way Berg uses his words is quite amazing. It hits you right in the face and it's almost like he's talking directly to you basically letting you know..."Hey, you're not alone" I really enjoyed this book and I am very much looking forward to his next one!

This book is incredible! Every poem is written in a way that makes each word basically stand out in your mind! Almost every poem in this book deals with self-hate, the troubles of the world and the lack of God in it. It's sad but true. The author is about as true as it gets with the way this world and society are. Even though it's 70 different poems, it's all one trip...which makes it awesome cause everything is tied in together. This is one of the best poetry book I've read in a long time...not just for its brilliance but also for its originality. The truth hurts...and that's what you get. Give this book a chance, you will NOT be disappointed!!

This workbook really helps you get the most out of the textbook, Changed Into His Image, by Jim Berg. The workbook is set up so that you cover a chapter of the book every week. This gets you through the textbook in thirteen weeks. Each day (five days a week) you will read a few pages from the text, write down two significant statements, answer some thought-provoking questions, work on memorizing a verse, and pray for change. This resource can be used individually, with another person, or in a small group Bible study. The only warning I have is that you better be committed to doing the work if you are going to buy this book. It takes about a half hour a day.

The two book series, Book: Changed Into His Image and Workbook: Taking Time To Change give the true Christian tools to successfully implement lasting life change by the power of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. Once ones own life is being directed toward sanctificaton, the ability is there to begin helping other Christians begin the journey towards sanctification. Real life problems and responses to them are addressed so that the Christian can begin to see life from God's perspective rather than the individual's own situation. This book should be required reading for the new Christian as well as the older Christian. It's principles will benefit any Christian willing to take the time to implement them into his or her life.

I would describe the books as concise, precise and extremely readable. The authors use fluid language and use the right technical terms in the right places. One of the best Computer Science books I have ever read. Definitely a good reference(though the book is not a comprehensive Operating Systems book) for a beginner who is looking to gain conceptual knowledge about Operating Systems in general and Multithreading in particular.

Very good book but newer edition by same authors is better.

This was an excellent book with detailed coverage of threads programming even down to how various hardware architectures affect multithreaded program behavior. However there is a more current edition under a different name (Multithreaded Programming with Pthreads) by the same authors that is more current that I would recommend instead (everything in this book is in the newer book).

A well written book that clearly explains the concepts and issues of thread programming. It provides the neccessary background information to understand the overall thread context and then describes the specific issues in turn. It does not over whelm the reader with technical details but concentrates on one issue at a time. It's a great book that I highly recommend!

This book, true to other Solaris and Sun manual style, is concise and to the point. This is probably the best introduction to Threads Programming in existence. Lewis and Berg's style is almost reassuring as you learn the basics to threads programming, even for non-Solaris users. If the world of computing and how-to books were written in this style, the reader could learn anything.

I had no idea this was going to be the last book. I just got it today and all I have to say is this, Berg IS a great writer. This book is a fitting end to what was an incredible ride. From the very first page of his first book to the very last page of this one, it all goes together and once you put it down..., it's like "wow." I highly recommend reading all three of his books back to back to back and you will understand what I'm talking about. His writing is not just something you can feel and relate to, it is also, in someways, prophetic. Thanks for the ride, Chris.

I've really become a huge fan of Chris' writing over the past few years and to hear that this is his last poetry book is kinda sad. His words are so powerful and I'm going to miss that. Other than that, this book is great. I still think the spider's egg is his best but this book does close out the trilogy nicely. There are some poems in here that leave me thinking this guy is kinda odd but I guess it's best to get whatever it is you're thinking out while you can. Like his other books, this one is well written and get's right to the point. The stand out poem to me in this book is "My Prayer" It's an amazing piece of writing that is basically Chris praying but written in a poetic form. It's incredible. That's why I'm kinda on the fence about the sanity of this guy. Some poems are like the one I just mentioned, to a degree and some are completely crazy! This trilogy is a true work of art. It starts and finishes with brilliance and excellence and I'm just happy to have come across it.

Two important guides to weight and eating are presented in these excellent surveys by Frances Berg. Children And Teens Afraid To Eat (0-918532-55-8, ...) examines six major eating and weight problems, from undernutrition of teens to eating disorders and obesity, blending statistics with a survey of underlying social causes and the actions which need to be taken to help teens. Women Afraid To Eat (62-0, ....) documents the physical and psychological harm done by social images which focus on the detriments of eating. From fad diets to weight prejudices, this tells women how to break free of weight obsession.

Children & Teens Afraid to Eat, Helping Youth in Today's Wei

Review Date: 2001-01-15
Without a doubt, this book should be reading material for all parents before their first child is born.

We want to think our youth are active and healthy. During my years of teaching, I have been more and more disturbed at inactivity of our children, disruption of normal eating, and the amount of fat and sugar calories served in school lunch rooms.

The food the children who carry their lunch bring from home can be nourishing, but parents might be surprised if they watch their children eat. A child's lunch sack might have a good turkey sandwich with greens, two large cookies, a bar of candy, and a soft drink. The child almost always has the candy ond/or cookies at recess. When lunchtime comes, he often throws that good sandwich in the trash with the apple. The food he brought from home has now become two cookies, candy, and a soft drink.

During recess too many children are inactive. Day after day, we watched the same ones stand around talking all recess while they eat their candy or cookies. After observing this for a few years, we scheduled a quarter-mile run twice a week and a full mile on Friday for P. E. Also, three times a week we have exercises appropriate to the age groups. You'd be surprised how many look forward to all the activity once they get used to it. We think it also stimulates brain activity in the classroom.

On the other hand, there are the healthy, active children who might have a cookie at recess, then play hard. They eat their sandwich and apple at lunch and the cookies and are eaten or saved for after school. In these children's lunch boxes there is porbably no candy. What's happening here? Berg says studies show that parents that don't "bug" their children about eating, produce children who don't have hang-ups about eating.

Berg writes that research shows that family attitudes can play a big part in the future eating patterns of their children. When a healthy baby's hunger is satisfied, it will then stop drinking. Parents who "urge him to finish the bottle, disguise cereal with applesauce to get it down" and thus feel frustrated for fear the baby isn't eating enough, is teaching the infant that it's important to eat more than his body needs. All parents should read carefully and think about what Berg has to say.

A parent who "hesitates to let a chubby toddler have seconds, makes a preschooler stay at the table until she finishes her peas, insists that the child eat `two bites of each food,' or lectures a school-age child to get him to drink his milk...is overmanaging, and it teaches children to ignore their natural signals of hunger and satiety."

By allowing a child to listen and heed these natural signals, Berg tells us that this is an important way to begin the youngster on a lifetime of healthy eating patterns.

Americans serve too large portions. A friend of mine returned from a long vacation in England and remarked that she didn't see an overweight English person all the time she was there. I said I was surprised, I always thought Britons were gluttons. She said she did, too, but she didn't see any.

Berg tells why. "A Healthy Weight Journal subscriber in London sent me an article titled: `Portions all out of Proportion' that decried `America's elephantine cuisine.' The writer compares national foods: hot dogs (350 calories in the U.S. versus 150 calories in Britain), cookies (493 vs. 65), ice cream cone (625 vs.160), muffin (705 vs. 158), and a meal of steak and fries (2,060 vs. 730). Until recently, our very large muffins were called "jumbo muffins," the article notes, now they are simply `muffins.' " Apparently, we are the ones who have become the nation of gluttons.

Berg says that even some our food that is considered healthy, non-junk food is astoundingly high in calories. And the more a child above the age of 3 is served, the more he eats. Big portions promote over-eating. Berg says studies show that our school-age children are getting heavier every year. Younger and younger children are becoming anorexic to stay slim, an astounding number alternately diet and binge. These patterns used to be found among those high school age and older, now they appear among elementary children.

Berg says problems such as eating disorders, dysfunctional eating, undernutrition of teenage girls trying to be thin, hazardous weight loss, and size prejudice all are increasing. Surprisingly, all that can be prevented. The author, Francie Berg, when asked why she wrote this book, says she grows more and more concerned about the appalling research on children and youth eating problems. The true facts were there, but no one was telling those who need to know: our parents and teachers.

Now that she's telling us-we need to listen.

Berg's research is well done. Anyone who doubts what she writes, can read the studies for themselves as her sources are well documented.

A cultural commentary with practical advice
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-06
To be overweight is to fail" . It sums up our society's attitude towards eating and body size today. This is a quote from 'AFRAID TO EAT: Children and Teens in Weight Crisis' by Frances M. Berg. While the book is a cultural commentary, it is also filled with practical advice on ways to prevent eating disorders, obesity, and dysfunctional eating.

The first step to help, is to help understand the roots of the problem. This book does that. It points out the many ways in which we are not nurturing our children, particularly our girls. We are a society that has become fatter and fatter, yet simultaneously bombards our kids with the message that they need to achieve a body size and shape that is biologically unsustainable for the majority of them. This may be the seed for eating disorders. How high levels of obesity and disordered eating and starving teens can coexist is explained. AFRAID TO EAT explores the many forces at play....cultural expectations, media, the role of family and athletics, peer pressure, and more. It explores the issue of size rejudice and lifestyle choices, both of which lead to eating disorders and obesity.

The second half of the book focuses on how to prevent eating disorders, how to make changes to promote normal eating where it doesn't exist, and how to intervene with childhood obesity. There are guidelines for healthy food choices, designs for new health approaches for families, how to include schools in prevention programs, and finally a call to action that challenges us to make changes in attitude (e.g. a greater appreciation for healthy lifestyles versus being thin), lifestyle (e.g. active living, improving phys ed programs in school), prevention (e.g. by promoting healthy attitudes and lifestyles and developing special prevention programs for schools and communities), health care (e.g. reduce size prejudice in health care, focus on improving health, not on ineffective weight loss) and knowledge ( e.g. improved communication to consumers, better education in medical school).

There is useful information in this book not only for a parent, but also for teachers and health care workers. Perhaps after reading it you can share it with your school nurse or phys ed teacher. I am sure you will find its approach not only informative but practical and useful. The word 'vitality' is used a lot in this book as it helps us focus eating away from dieting and size/shape obsession towards eating that promotes a healthy and 'vital' lifestyle.

I work as a professional nutritionist and see firsthand the consequences of the fear of eating. This book takes a big stab at addressing the revolutionary changes that need to be made in our personal and societal approaches towards eating. I recommend it to any who want to join in that revolution, or simply wish to help their own kids enjoy nutritious, guilt free eating for life.

There are many excellent canine anatomy references available, but for really visualizing anatomy, this is best. The illustrations are the best I've seen anywhere, done in large, beautiful color. The text is bare-bones; but that's appropriate for an atlas. It's not a replacement for Miller's, but this is FAR more useful as an atlas.

I bought this as a backup book to Millers for my years in Vet Med at UCD. This book has become a favorite as the the pictures are very, very good when it comes to anatomy texts (and I've got 5 of those, so I think my opinion is valid). Just like any anatomy text, there are a few things here and there that a course may ask you to know and it's not in there but overall it had most everything and was very useful. Oh, and it is much thinner and lighter than Millers for lugging back and forth from school to home.
Also the appendices are FABULOUS, they cover many extra topics, from detailed radiology info to a huge section on clinical and functional anatomy where it list parts and says a few important clinical things about it.
I wouldn't recommended it as a replacement for Millers but as a secondary addition to it.

This story picks up right where In the Light of Passing: Book 1 left off. Although Shance and Nadeena have begun their new life together, there is unfinished business to tend to. They have a whole new world to figure out, and an underground city to build. But their contentment is short-lived. The massive warship returns, and this time there is nowhere left to run to.
Will a city buried beneath the rock be enough to keep them safe? And what of the child Nadeena is carrying? She hasn't even told Shance yet. Should she have this baby, knowing that they may all be dead before spring? Or would it be better to give up this new life and focus on supporting Shance in the fight of his life?
An excellent tale that holds you fast from the very first page. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy with a romantic flair.

Brinda's promise is the continuation of the story of a planet destroyed by an asteroid. The inhabitants have been invited to settle on Haleen. Life will not be easy but with Commander Shance to guide them they feel safe. The Haleen's have hidden motives behind their invitation.

Nadeena and Shance continue their love story in Book 2, "Brinda's Promise." The inhabitants of Grahba have been invited to settle on Haleen. Life will not be easy but with Commander Shance to guide them they feel safe. The Haleen's have hidden motives behind their invitation.

There is a bit of truth to stories passed on generation after generation. Each generation adds a spin to the story. Eventually the listeners do not know how much is true. Haleen and the Eclesians share a prophecy concerning a warrior a warrior that bargained for his life. Rimous "forged a pact with a dark civilization. The warrior would destroy whom ever he fought. The Eclesians no longer knew how much truth there was to the prophecy but they knew that Rimous' pact had secured power for them.

The settler's continued building a city in which to live. They did not know that a warship lurked overhead. They did not suspect that they would soon be fighting a battle where odds were against them.

K.C. Berg has done it again. She's created a world that is fascinating. Her style of writing is crisp and holds the reader's attention. This is one of those books where you become part of the story. You can hardly wait to turn the page and see what's going to happen next. The characters are lively and endearing. I especially enjoyed her description of Doxy. What a fascinating, intelligent creature. I want one! I suspect that K.C. has plans for Book 3. I hope so. I highly recommend this book for teens and adults. I believe Science Fiction and Fantasy lovers will want a copy of this one.

Sangren's Marxian approach to social analysis is crucial to understanding the phenomenon of culture. This theory is more insightful than other theories because it views culture as an endlessly reproducing machine-like whole that produces individual selves, communities, and society in its process. In turn, people themselves are human agents with power who unconsciously reproduce the machine at all these levels by simply living out their lives. Alienation is an element in this process, and although Sangren focuses mainly on how alienation works regarding Chinese religion, religious gods are only one form of all the alienating idioms people express depending on their situations and interests. When analyzing social reality, alienation becomes a constant while its idioms and the peoples and cultures reflecting them often conflict with each other and change through history, and many times the changes themselves serve only to reproduce the original system as history repeats itself. In addition, Sangren offers a critique of Foucault's concept of power, emphasizing that power is not a "subject" itself with its own agency and intentions and should not be treated like one. Finally, it remains an open question as to whether or not the author should be applying Freudian psychoanalytic concepts to Chinese minds in his last chapter, especially since the Chinese people don't agree with it. Overall, the book makes one wonder if the human mind will ever mutate out of the circular logics that form the basis of the reasoning that social orders are built upon.

Are you interested in Anthropological theory but tired of one's that that ignore the power of people as human agents to reproduce their own cultures? Sangren's focus on alienation shows how people themselves play an integral part in this process. Did you ever think that your belief in a god might actually be contributing to the survival of your own culture? Or, if you're being exploited, did you ever wonder how your own actions could be contributing to your own exploitation and reproducing your own circumstances? Although answers to these questions are not provided directly, they can be derived from Sangren's extremely thought-provoking model that is not only relevant to Chinese society, but with some tweaking, can be applied anywhere! Employing concepts like alienation, misrepresentation, and mystification, this model comes from a Marxian dialectical approach that proves to be so much more enlightening than postmodern theories about culture.
Critics might argue that the theory doesn't account for change, but how can any approach account for change before understanding, totally, the nature of the culture that changes in the first place? Social realities in any culture might not be pretty, but anthropologists have to first face the facts before they can understand change. For example, reality may include seemingly inescapable relationships of exploitation(like in his analysis of Chinese women's circumstances), but if analysts ignore how people, as productive agents, might be reproducing their own exploitation even through resistant behaviors, they will never be able to account for how true creative change happens.
Although Sangren's model doesn't yet account for change, his special attention to how people are also true agents of power can certainly inspire change!
