THE BOOK IS REALLY GOOD HOWEVER IT IS A LITTLE MATURE FOR MY 5 YEAR OLD TWINS. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOUR CHILDREN BE INROLLED IN AT LEAST ONE YEAR OF RELEGION CLASSES. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT RELEGION YOU ARE BUT IT SEVERVES AS A GOOD BASIS FOR THE BOOK. THE BOOK IS VERY POSITIVE AND TEACHES SOME WONDERFUL LESSONS. IT ALSO PROMOTES A MILE FORM OF MEDITATION WHICH I LIKE BECAUSE IT CAN TAKE A HYPER KID AND REALLY CALM THEN DOWN. KUDO'S TO THE KABBALAH CENTER FOR PUTTING THIS BOOK OUT. I THINK IT IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK TO COMPLIMENT RELIGOUS CLASSES OR THE TEACING OF A PARENT TO THEIR CHILD ABOUT GOD AND RELEGION.

Written by the "People's Kabbalist" Yehuda Berg with award-winning author Dev Ross, The 72 Names of God for Kids: A Treasury of Timeless Wisdom introduces young readers to Kabbalah teachings and combinations of Aramaic letters that spell God's names - not ordinary names like Joshua or Sarah, but rather mystical names that can help one quiet selfish impulses, open one's heart spiritually, and become a better person. The names embody positive qualities from stopping fighting to happiness to freedom, believing in ourselves, and much more. The color illustrations express emotion directly to young hearts, in this enthusiastically recommended introduction to Kabbalah spirituality.

This book has a flow to it that continues where, the spider's egg, left off. It has a similar tone to it but with less aggression. With that being said, it still has a dark feel to it. It's almost psychotic and from what I've heard, a bit more personal. Everyone should check this out. It's a great book.

This guy really can write, man. I read his first book, the spider's egg, and thought "wow!" Then when I heard he was coming out with a new book, I checked it out and once again "wow" It's a little different, not too much but still deals with the basic messages this dude is expressing. I'm not all that much into poetry books but I really do like these. I can feel it, that why! Keep 'em comin', dude!

Chris gets more personal in this book than he did in his previous. In "The Spider's Egg" he wrote beautifully about the inner demons he was dealing with and the truth hurts, reality of this world. This book is both similar and different mixed together. Sounds weird, right? Well, that's what you should come to expect from this writer. There are certain poems in this book that almost bring tears to your eyes because of the honesty they inflict about things alot of people, unfortunately, have been through and are still going through. From abuse, both physically and mentally of all kinds, to the struggles of keeping faith and hope. Chris, again, uses his words to connect to those who have not had the easiest of lives. It really is a great book and I hope you guys check it out and give it a chance. God bless you, Chris!

These publishers are the greatest. They consistently top the competition. This book offers so many visual gifts to its readers, and since the quilts are small, the projects are producable within a reasonable amount of time. I just let my eyes meander through the book, and I am inspired to get back to the sewing machine. It is written in a friendly style, without the typical clinical and off putting language that we find in so many other quilt books. The quilts are photographed so clearly with such vibrant colors. I dare anyone to read this book, and not turn directly to her fabric stash and begin dreaming of the next project!

The Diary of Mary Berg is a must read for any serious student of the Holocaust. Her account is unique in that this child experienced the day to day traumas and horrors of the Nazis for over three years as she fought for survival in the streets of Warsaw.

I feel that this is the finest narrative ever written about the Warsaw Ghetto! Readers will be mesmerized, traumatized, and enlightened as they experience the reality of how this young lady survived six decades ago.

Throughout the period of the Holocaust, numerous diaries were written by the Jewish victims and survivors, documenting this horrific period in human history. Among the more famous diaries are The Diary of Anne Frank, and more recently, The Diary of Petr Ginz. What is amazing about most of these diaries is the young voice narrating the horrors of the period, and describing with intimate detail, the lost hopes and dreams of a young generation doomed to suffer and in many instances perish for being considered 'undesirable' as a Jew. The Diary of Mary Berg adds to this portrait of young lives diminished, and potential lost, only Mary Berg survives and her diaries are a living testament to her unwavering spirit to survive and document the stark realities of war, in particular the siege of Warsaw by the Nazis, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the ghetto's liquidation. Luckily for Mary Berg and her family, their privileged positions enabled them to seek a path to freedom but though they escaped the horrific deaths designated for the Jews by the Nazis, Mary Berg has certainly made a valuable contribution to the annals of Holocaust history by her poignant documentation of a time of despair.

Jews also Loot Poles, Ghetto Life, and American Jews Deliberately Spared by the Nazis

Review Date: 2007-08-26
The following review is based on the original (1945) edition.

In recent years, certain authors (e. g., Michael Steinlauf, Jan T. Gross) have attempted to make some kind of deep moral issue out of the fact that Poles looted Jews and acquired post-Jewish properties. But such acts were common in wartime, and certainly not limited to any nationality. When Mary Berg and her fellow Jews were on the move during the German-Soviet conquest of Poland, they came across a bullet-ridden house containing a dead Polish peasant. They looted him, as she describes (October 10, 1939): "The kettle which we `inherited' from this murdered peasant became our faithful companion on the long road to Warsaw." (p. 14)

Those readers familiar with chroniclers of the Warsaw ghetto (notably Ringelblum and Czerniakow) may find Berg's entries rather brief. She seems to have a left-wing bias, judging by her frequent positive references to "Polish revolutionaries", etc. (p. 146, 210, 229), to the virtual exclusion of non-leftist Poles who helped Jews. One exception is the following: "Only the nuns who are in this group protect them and condemn the anti-Semitic remarks of certain women. The nuns take care of the children without discriminating between the Jews and the Gentiles. They display true sisterly love and Christian charity; everyone respects them." (p. 196)

One aspect of the anti-Christian spirit among certain modern academics has been the implicit equation of the Nazi-built ghettos for Jews with earlier Christian ones. In his preface, Holocaust-survivor Shneiderman soundly repudiates any such insinuation: "The term `ghetto' itself is a Nazi lie, for there can be no comparison between the Warsaw ghetto and others created by the Nazis in Poland, and the medieval ghettos, whose walls occasionally served as protection to the Jews who lived within them. From the beginning, the modern ghettos served the enemy as deathtraps." (p. 7)

In several entries in her diary, Berg mentions the sufferings of Poles (e. g., p. 198, pp. 210-211) at the hands of the Germans. And, in common with many Polish authors, Berg refers to those Poles who would harm or betray Jews as hoodlums (p. 25), and hooligans (p. 111, 235). As for their Jewish counterparts, she contrasts Jewish criminals with those Jews who became informers as a result of being broken by Gestapo tortures: "However, there are a few underworld characters who are really dangerous because they take their services for the Gestapo seriously, just as they used to commit crimes in dead earnest." (p. 111).

Berg touches on the actions of the Polish Blue police (Policja Granatowa). During a German-sponsored execution of Jews, members of the Polish police refused to obey the order to shoot the Jews, and several of them wept (p. 154). The deportations of Warsaw's Jews to Treblinka, starting late July 1942, took place as follows, without the participation of the Polish Blue police: "The Lithuanians and Ukrainians displayed great zeal in their murderous work. They are tall young beasts of seventeen to twenty who were especially trained for their job by German instructors." (p. 169). Berg met a Polish prison guard who had tears in his eyes when he described the manner in which the Jews were being herded to the death trains (pp. 170-171). Ukrainian and Baltic collaborators were used by the Germans against Jews in many other contexts throughout German-occupied Poland (p. 175, 183-184, 228, 230, 233).

Mary Berg was the daughter of an American citizen. She and other non-European Jews were released by the Nazis, finally arriving in Spain in March 1944 (p. 251). It is obvious that, contrary to Holocaust-uniqueness arguments, the Nazis were not determined, as either a matter of obsession or a matter of policy, to kill every single possible Jew within their grasp.

"You have to study a great deal to learn a little." Charles Montesquieu once said, but all one needs to do is to read but a little of "Learning for Life..." to learn a lot.
With nearly 3000 quotations by more than 1000 people at your fingertips this book is a wealth of wisdom.
Veteran homeschooling mom and writer Teri Olsen has packed her years of research into this handy, enlightening, and valuable book.
Beginning with a selection of bible verses, Learning for Life is neatly organized into topical sections for easy reference. The pool of philosophers, writers, religious leaders, educators and other historical figures Teri has sampled is nothing less than impressive.
Read what Einstein has to say about imagination, or what Ambrose Bierce thinks of Education. Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Winston Churchill, Charlotte Mason-all the great men and women of our history are there with their nuggets of truth and enduring wisdom for the ages.
You'll also find brief biographical notes on the originator of each quotation so you can familiarize yourself with the individual's background or place in history, and learn if the author was self- or home-educated.
This book is perfect for students, writers, pastors, or anyone who is looking for that perfect quote but doesn't have the time or energy to find it, and will certainly make a fine addition to your home library.
I had a blast reading it and Teri's book has inspired me to start using quotes in my own writing. Like a garnish on a well-prepared dish, the perfect quote can make all the difference.

I Love This Book! Get One For Everyone on Your Gift List!

If you are wondering what to get the student, teacher, pastor, parent, grandparent, librarian, businessman, researcher, (deep breath) editor, secretary, Sunday school teacher, politician, childcare provider, lawyer, doctor (deep breath) or any other person on your gift list - look no further!

I have to get more than one copy of this book because it is going to be used so often in so many ways. I want a copy by my bedside for reading when I only have a few minutes before turning out the light. The quotations are thought-provoking and I enjoy pondering on the ideals some of them inspire.

I definitely want one on my resource shelf for teaching. Classical and Charlotte Mason style educators and homeschoolers and teachers of all types will love using this book as a resource for quotes to include in Nature Journals and Copy Work. There is even a chapter in the book entitled "Nature and the Outdoors" that I will refer to often in my own nature journaling!

One copy of the book should be kept at everyone's desk and I need another one in my laptop bag because I will want to use it in blogging and writing. I am very excited to find this resource and wish I had found it sooner. I am going to be able to use it when writing my newsletters and articles. I will even use it in my Christmas card correspondences this year! But most of all I'm going to enjoy reading this book whenever I get a few minutes to just relax - it's something I can just pick up and randomly read anytime.

Every chapter is like a new gift to be opened and relished. I was delighted to see so many subjects covered. The quotes are divided into 59 different subjects that cover life lessons in just about everything from Education, to Family Life, to Government and Politics! There is also a chapter on Special Needs which means a lot to me since I'm mom to twin boys with MR and autism.

This jewel of a book also has a handy section in the back of the book that includes a short biography of everyone quoted in it. What a great resource! This book includes over 1,000 quotes of great people such as Abigail Adams, Charlotte Mason, Isaac Newton, Noah Webster, Einstein, presidents, first ladies and many, many more.

Other pleasing bonuses include a chapter on creative ways to use the book, an index of names so you can find a quote of someone specifically, and an appendix listing great teachers and mentors past and present. There are even blank pages in the back of the book for recording quotes you might discover elsewhere.

When I was a young mother, I loved making posters of quotes and hanging them above my desk or on the fridge for inspiration. Now, I use them in blogging, e-mail signatures, and yes, I still like to make posters out of them and hang them where I can see them and be reminded of their importance. We never stop learning, and quotes are a great way to inspire us in bite-sized lessons. In this busy world, it's a great way to teach our children. Post them where the kids will see them, ask questions about them, and inspire good conversation.

I cannot imagine anyone not wanting to own this book. It is an ideal resource for teachers and homeschoolers, but history buffs, speakers, writers, book lovers and people from all walks of life will also want a copy for their library.

Caution: buy some extra highlighters and post-its because you're going to love marking up this book and dog-earing the pages. Trust me on this - you'll want more than one copy!

I think the anonymous quote in the book sums it up best:

"Wise sayings are like great men talking to us. They are the cheapest teachers, consultants, advisers, guidelines, pilots, signposts, guardians and counselors. They make us wise in one hundredth of the time of any other sources of knowledge. Get closely acquainted with them. They are short cuts to wisdom."

I give this book an A+!

This is a convenient resource for students who need quotations for written or spoken presentations. Being in the education field myself, I am aware of how often a quotation can be helpful to provide support or controversy, history or humor for a particular topic. Familiar as well as mind-challenging quotes can make an otherwise ordinary presentation into a memorable one. I found this book to be well researched and documented. It has an easy to use layout and would be an excellent time saver for the busy college student who is looking to add insightful quotes to a term paper or speech but doesn't have time to spend searching in library books or on the internet.

Finding poetry that breaks free of the monotony of rhyming couplets or Seuss rip-offs is hard to do, so I feel obligated to highlight anything that holds up to repeated scrutiny.

Few poetry books are quite like this multi-layered story about a cat and a dog making friends during a rain shower.

Sidman wrote it as concrete poetry, where the lines take shape as pictures. Watch for free verses buried in the grass or woven among leaves and branches or circling the cat and dog.

She found a fortuitous partner in Berg, who used simple shapes and flat colors to keep our focus on the words. But the best feat is with the typography, a favorite trick of graphic designers even when it's not so central to the storytelling.

A cloud starts out with a few pale, wispy words:

just
a tiny puff
a swirl of frosting-
cloud

and builds to a bold-faced, fat crescendo:

THUNDER-PLUMPED SEETHING MASS OF GLOOMY FUMING
BLACK BOTTOMED STORM BREWING

This one's kept my son busy hunting threads of the story and he can't even read.

wcdancer appears to be under the impression that Audrey Kishline is somehow associated with this book. In fact, though, her book was a completely separate one and she is not one of the authors of this book at all. Potential readers should weigh wcdancer's opinions accordingly. :-)

This book presents common-sense methods for changing your life, essentially by beginning to live the life you want to live eventually. It's not the single best thing I ever read, but it's a breath of fresh air compared to the dreary old advice to abase yourself, label yourself defective and diseased, and turn your entire life over to "God as we understood Him."

If you're a devoted 12-stepper, this may anger or even frighten you. If you're looking for a more positive approach which doesn't condemn you to obsessing over alcohol for the rest of your life, you might like this. It's certainly worth a read.

This book is an excellent resource for those seeking a well established alternative to the pathology/deficit/disease focus of traditional 12-Step programs. I believe the reviewer who rated this book with 1 star was confused on its origns. Audrey Kishline is the founder of Moderation Management while Insoo Kim Berg (a contributor) & Steve de Shazer (both out of Milwaukee) are the founders of the Brief Solution Focus Method of Therapy. MM was founded as self-help group. BSF was developed by educated and trained therapists with practical experience. The Brief Solution Focus Method serves as the foundation for this book. A couple of it's main points are: there is hope for the future and there is no "one size fits all program." It is an excellent read whether or not you accept its premise.

I read this book after pretty much exhausting every other possibility for recovery from alcoholic drinking. Berg and Kim present an approach that is radically different from any other I've encountered. Their main thesis seems to be, "Start acting as you expect to act when you're sober, but do it NOW." The idea is that by incorporating healthy habits into your life immediately, you can actually begin to learn how to be sober before hitting bottom. The book is very clearly and forcefully written, with helpful case studies to illustrate the main ideas. I was able to make substantial progress on my own behavior through the methods described here. I highly recommend it!

I have bought several copies of this book to hand to clients. This is a program that works for those who are not interested, for whatever reason, in attending 12-Step meetings. I have had the privelege of attending workshops on this subject by both authors, and feel that the book completly and concisely presents their point of view on the subject of stopping unproductive behaviors of any kind. A "must have" in the library of any therapist dealing with addictions and of any person trying to control their unproductive drinking habits.

I own about 450 books on India and Indian culture, so when I say this is one of my 2-3 favorite books on India (the other probably being Meeting God by Stephen Huyler), it truly says something about this book.

The Sari is beautiful to look at, and fascinating to read. It draws us into women's lives in a way that is enlightening, personal, and does not play to Western preconceptions.

A cross between social antropology and coffee-table book, this book appeals on many levels. It has a ring of truth, drawn from hundreds of interviews with Indian women about their lives and their attitude towards the clothes they wear. It sets these individual attitudes squarely in the cultural milieu in which they belong.

I hope that it gets the wide readership it deserves.

A lovely journey

I really enjoyed Mukulika Banerjee's look into the beautiful but often complicated world of the sari. It provides a great deal of information on regional customs. I was disappointed that the book did not contian more photos.

Amazing amount of detail, beautifully illustrated

I have had a deep interest in Indian and Pakistani dress for four or five years. I own and wear several saris and shalwar kamiz, but didn't know much about their history or the nuances of dress; this book changed that for me. I was looking for a well illustrated coffee table book, but got that and much more! I could barely put it down from the moment it was delivered. Although there is a lot of detail, it is written in a way that is interesting and easy to read. I highly reccomend it!

a feast for the eyes and a fount of information!

Mukulika Bannerjee's book, while easily accessible to Westerners with little to no knowledge of Indian clothing customs, also goes in-depth about the many levels of nuance attached to a deceptively simple 6-yard piece of unsewn cloth. She delineates cultural sentiments about what colors and styles are appropriate for unmarried girls, the new bride, middle-aged mothers, and widows. Sections include explanations of the many fabric styles, from ethnic handloom cottons and silks to garish polyester synthetics, along with discussions on what sort of woman is likely to wear each, and for what occasion. Fascinating real-life vignettes feature all sorts of sari wearers, from Hindu to Muslim and from the poorest villager to Bollywood stars and political leaders like Indira Gandhi. The many stunning color photographs make this book a real delight to the eyes as well as a great source of information on a topic rarely covered in the West.

What a sweet little book! Fun, accessible graphics present tips for simplifying your holidays, vintage poetry, trivia, verses, recipes and "Chicken Soup" style inspiring stories, and more, assembled in a scrapbook style. This charming book creates a beautiful harmony from the unique voices of its six authors. It would make a great "open before Christmas" gift. It's homespun look and content are a reminder that the holidays are a time to celebrate and enjoy, not to stress over!

Excellent book for the Christmas season.

I read this book straight through the first time I picked it up. It has wonderfully engaging stories, and some really nice recipes to boot. We tried some at our house and love them. Not to mention the fact that the style of the book is really gorgeous.

I think it'd be a great gift book for the Christmas season. I'm getting three for my mother, grandmother, and aunt. You should check it out if you're big on the Christmas scene.

Although I'm only one of six writers on this book, I'm sincerely amazed at its beauty and quality. The shiny silver snowflakes on the midnight blue background of this hardcover book and full color pages inside give it the look and feel of a high-quality Hallmark treasure. One reader emailed me that this book took her breath away.

Tasty recipes await, historical fun facts educate, and a listing of "favorites" help the reader get acquainted with each of us authors.

If you want a heart-moving short read, try my "Dad's First Diploma" on p. 153. If you're a writer, you'll especially appreciate my brief Cross Creek story. Perhaps you can tuck some tissues in your sleeve as you read this perfect holiday book.

This book took my breath away. Truly beautiful, unique, heartwarming. It's one of those books I'll treasure from year to year, reading and re-reading the stories within until I know them by heart. It has a hodgepodge of everything - recipes, inspirational stories, Christmas tips, poetry, projects. I'm not sure how they packed so much into 160 pages, but it's an overflowing chest full of treasures!
