This is a unique work which has such delicacies as custard
apple preparations from the Andes. The work describes the
palm fruit of South India and figs which are the native
fruits of Syria. This work describes the prized seaweed
vegetable of the sea. The author describes oriental mushrooms ; such as, enoki, shiitake and other meat substitutes.
The mushroom preparations are low in cholesterol with plenty
of amino acids and Vitamins A,B,C,D, and niacin.
This book will complete your collection of books on fine food.

Great Book only one small issue
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-07
This book is a collection of essays by nine different scholars and covers many subjects such as embroidery design motifs, fertility and women's roles as signified by their clothing. It offers not only a basis by which to view European textiles, but also prehistorical artifacts, modern day rituals and even Ukrainian Easter egg designs. It is fascinating reading. Be aware though, that with the exception of an essay on Norwegian use of metal in dress and one on Turkish dress, all the essays concern eastern Europe - no Scotland, Spain, Germany, etc. It is also pretty much exclusively about women's dress as well, so there is very little about men's dress. For the topics it covers, though, it is fairly in depth and each essay has its own bibliography. A great book.

Easy To Read & Informative!

This book is one for woman and the information in it will definitely enhance your health if you implement it into your life. At the onset of this read we are given twenty reasons to change our eating habits that just make good common sense. For example, The importance of lowering your cholesterol, reducing high blood pressure, boosting your brainpower and banishing fatigue and many more. Just an improvement in those areas alone should send most of us rushing to the store for a copy of this book.
As we continue the read information is broken down into categories such as: Learning about carbs; Vitamins, Stocking our kitchen with healthy food; and even a section to help you shop wisely. Also included are some question and answers for women such as, "Why do shampoos and conditioners contain vitamins and minerals?". Added on each page is a little extra tid-bit of information that is very useful. All in all this is one informative read and also a great attention grabber. Written with an easy flow you will probably go through this book in several sittings and return time and time again to use all of the valuable information inside. Very nice book.

Happily waiting

I happened upon this little Puffin Book whilst waiting for a hospital appointment. Someone maintains a bookcase full of interesting books and I suppose in the circumstance of most waiters a poetry anthology is suitable, particularly one aimed at children. I was immediately attracted by R C Trevelyn's "Winter Rains" which suited the February day on which I found it, a very hopeful piece. Other choices varied from Ogden Nash to the Book of Proverbs covering many great poets writngs on animals and people. A delight, the editor choosing only easily accessible poems.

Like anything designed by M/M Paris, the packaging itself is almost as wonderful as the art it contains. This is a hardcover book. It is black with gold outlining. It comes covered in a soft pink (as depicted here) dustcover that is almost like canvas. The first thirty pages are white and have a somewhat rough feeling; they feel more natural and textured than most other papers. These pages are used to exhibit the line and ink work of renowned Icelandic artist, Gabriela Fridriksdottir. It is a great way to begin her set and I must say that these are my favorite out of all her works in other mediums. They are black and white, cartoonish ink doodles with impish characters and mischeivous personalities. The titles really make you think about their deeper meaning. (How does this represent the word "existentialism?") These works are the kind that most Bjork fans would be most acquainted with, because some of them were included in the packaging and booklet of the singer's 2002 Greatest Hits. The next set of pages are printed on very glossy white paper, which contrasts with the previous pages to divide her different styles, to seperate between 2D and 3D. These pages represent Gabriela's work in sculpture, photography and stills from her film (including Bjork's video for "Where Is the Line," which is part of the Tetralogia series). Fridriksdottir is definitely a master of many trades! Some of these pieces are funny, some confusing, and some are--to me--a bit disturbing. But one thing that can describe them all is interesting and each definitely pushes you to think. The last third of the book is composed of paper-bag-brown, thin pages with text. Raphael Gygax and Jonas Sen add their two cents by providing their interpretations and thoughts concerning Gabriela's work. They both offer some very interesting and deep insights which I would have never caught on to. Also included are several anectdotes by Sibylle Berg. I really do not understand their purpose or why they are included/belong here, but they're entertaining and tongue-in-cheek. These three said features are available here in three languages: English, Icelandic, and German. On the last few pages is Gabriela's list of works and exhibitions in chronological order. Overall, this is an excellent collection of modern conceptual art by Gabriela. It could definitely serve as a "coffee table" type of book that could spark much conversation. I personally just bought it for my own enjoyment and interest in this wonderful artist. The only problem I have is that I wish it had even more of her artwork, because I know that she has many more pieces. Otherwise, this is perfect and a great purchase, especially for the bargain offered here.

A fascinating review of the evolution of modern Italian eating
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-08
With all the Italian culinary books on the market today, it's surprising to note Garlic And Oil: Food And Politics In Italy is the first comprehensive history of food habits in modern Italy. A review of the history from the mid-19th century to modern times argues politics radically changed the Italian diet and cuisine, from a boring, unchanging habit to become the subject of fiery political debates and government intervention. Source material includes writings of scientists, economists, politicians, consumers and more, lending a lively scholarly tone to a fascinating review of the evolution of modern Italian eating.

I had this book for a history/women's studies class. I am not a fan of history classes in general, but I really enjoyed this book! Not dry at all, and extensive use of end-notes to allow further research on the topics presented.

Detailed Analysis of the Start of World War I
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-23
It seems like history constantly gets re-written to remove any blame from anybody: contrarian or revisionist historians now claim the Holocaust never happened, Japan doesn't teach their young folk anything about the Rape of Nanking. German historians blame everyone but themselves.

Let's face it, the countries of Europe have a history of going to war with each other just to see who gets to be the boss of more territory. In the 1800's von Bismarck was able to play off many parties to create a German nation from the city states and to gain territory from various neighbors. After his death a series of much less competent individuals tried to continue his policies. They pushed too far, the world pushed back, and somewhere around ten million people died.

This book does an excellent job of analyzing the actions of the Reich Chancellor, the German Foreign Office and the Great General Staff as they bumbled along. They wanted a short and victorious war (how often this seems to be what people who start wars want). They got a war that they simply couldn't understand, and began a century of warfare.

This book is an anchor that points out what these people did, not what some people would have you believe.
