Bozeman's Bridger Bowl and Bear Canyon ski areas have had a rich and tumultuous history. In Cold Smoke that history is recorded in the words of the people who pioneered and developed what has become a world-class skiing destination.
This intriguing success story began with a small group of local skiing enthusiasts and a little ingenuity. With virtually no money, just a lot of hard work, resourcefulness, and tenacity, this dedicated bunch took Bridger Bowl from its first homemade rope tow to its current status as the pride of Bozeman, a skiing haven that has spawned world champion skiers and serves as a major site for snow and avalanche research at Montana State University and around the world.
Enlivened with the anecdotes and family photos of three generations, Cold Smoke is a personal story, told with pride, humor, and an abiding love of place.

Better than the literary crit stuff that has been published on Isherwood, and miles ahead of the various attempts at biography, these 'Conversations' give a portrait of the whole man. It really is the best there is on the life of Christopher Isherwood

I can really recommend this book! Being a psychologist myself, I have always been on the alert for integrative approaches to couples therapy. This book is one of them! The author skillfully blends psychological theories and studies with her daily experience as a therapist. Especially interesting are the following features:
- A solid foundation in research findings
- Case studies with illuminating therapist interventions
- Self explorations
- Sample Workshop charts (if you decide to teach parts of the book in a workshop)
- A comprehensive bibliography both for couples and therapists
- An eclectic approach, integrating cognitive-behavior, sociocognitive, psychodynamic and humanistic therapy approaches

If you need suggestions for working with couples, I am sure you will find some of then in this book. Taking everything together, Linda Berg-Cross truly succeeded in writing a comprehensive book about couples therapy!

A succinct description of dolphins---beautiful artwork

I am a schoolteacher. This is a perfect model to use for showing students how to produce a product using information they obtain doing research. As an example for a research product it lends itself to any topic---seals, states, people, etc. It's an ABC book with one-word descriptions. Ex: D is for dive. The pictures are gorgeous scenes of the underwater life and experience of the dolphin. At the end of the book is a 2 to 3 sentence explanation for each word used in the ABC pages---for instance a description of dolphins and diving for the letter D. Absolutely wonderful way to teach young authors the beautiful simplicity, yet poignant magnitude of writing.

A Book For Young Children Who Have a Parent At War
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-02
Rarely are there any books for children that allow them the freedom to express their feelings like "Daddy Misses Kisses and candy at war". Authors Kathy Barnes, Ph.D. and Jody Berg have written a book aimed at that young group of 2-5 year olds who have to deal with having a parent away at war. That is a difficult thing for young people to understand, let alone deal with.

Their book is a gentle journey through some of the real emotions and fears that these youngsters might be feeling. The authors have provided places in the book where they can write, draw or express their own feelings with a little help from an adult. The book is a simple tool for a serious issue for not only children but also all families who have someone they love in harm's way.

The book is well thought out and makes good use of photos to make it more interesting for children. I strongly recommend this book to all military families with small children who have someone deployed to any war zone. It can become a useful tool to help you with your small children during this period. I give it the MWSA top children's book rating of FIVE TEDDY BEARS!

A very good intro

If you are the layman and want to get basics in genetics and molecular biology, this is a book for you. Berg and Singer explain the field in a very clear language, backed by good drawings and pictures wherever you need it. Having read the book mapping genomes, uncovering kinship, cloning, differences between eucaryotic and procaryotic genomes and virus strategies will be no mystery for you. The book encourages to dig deeper, and is a minimum for anyone wanting to get the feeling of what is going on in modern biology.

I read the book because I am currently working on my MA thesis on new reproductive technologies (in the Czech republic). It really was a fascinating reading! This interdisciplinary collection of essays shows how (Western) medicine treats human bodies, works with laboratory tests or medical protocols. Authors (for example M. Berg, V. Singleton, M. J. Casper, Ch. Cussins, S. Hirschauer, S. Timmermans...), who are being classified among the representatives of the so called „second wave of science studies", turned their attention to „purely medical" or „just technical tasks" which have been until a few year ago regarded as unproblematical, and not pertaining to the field of social sciences. All essays are extremely well written and I think that their strength lie in the combination of detailed ethnographic accounts of life in laboratories and/or clinics and careful interpretative work. The topics of essays are of wide range - from medical protocols, creation of nursing intervention system or treatment of asthma to changes of sexes, re/construction of identity in infertility clinic or booming field of fetal surgery etc. - and studying any of them can be a great adventure. Medical work is characterized by the ongoing articulation of heterogenous elements - humans as well as nonhumans - and it is this making of science, making of medicine, that the authors focus on. The myth of one stable and coherent medicine, one patient-body, or one science has crumbled and fallen, for there are differences in this apparent unity - there is stability and instability, continuity and discontinuity, local and universal, humanity, identity and alienation or objetification. I think that no reader will be disappointed.
