This is a great tool for coaches looking to add variety to their practices. This book has helpful illustrations to facilitate each drill. Also the nice thing about this book is the detailed explanation of what each drill is looking to achieve, and gives variations of most drills to make them more challenging.

I coach HS Freshman baseball and use many of these drills to teach the foundation of the high school game. I would recommend this book to coaches of all levels.

Kids are playing baseball at a much higher skill level these days, and are playing less sandlot baseball like I did when I was a kid. As a result, Little League practices need to be more than just BP and infield practice for the players to develop to their full potential.

This book has drills that range from fundamentals, to more complex workouts for the entire team. There are some drills appropriate for kids as young as T-Ball (and I have used them with players as young as 5) - but all of the drills are good for players as old as High School/Big League age.

This book would be particularly useful for Coaches returing to the game. The developments in the study of body mechanics have changed the way that a lot of basic skills are taught now, and this book includes up-to-date drills to reflect these changes.

For example, batters are taught a much more compact and quick swing than I learned when I was a kid.

This book is a good investment for the beginning OR experienced coach, or the parent who wants to see their kids excel in baseball - America's National Passtime.

Not so great for younger players

I bought this hoping for practice and drill ideas for my 7-year-old baseball nut son. While I'm sure it will be great in future years (high school), it has very little of use for younger players such as Little Leaguers. That's not a flaw with the book exactly, just a shortcoming of the marketing info at the time of sale.

I found the first Lilly Bennett book by accident during a browse of the library....and have read them all as fast as she can get them published. I want to be LILLY! Who else has money, a great office, a family that provides comic relief at just the right moments, a husband who picks YOU over a Las Vegas showgirl,AND a badge? If you enjoy your mysteries with a pinch of danger, unusual characters, and a whole lot of fun....read this series! Start at the beginning, or start with this one...you'll be glad you did!

During a charity dinner, a well known ex cowboy star is murdered in front of a room full of Wyoming's rich and famous. Then one by one, a whole family of ruthless land grabbers are murdered. There seems to be a connection with Las Vegas and Lilly enlists the help of her brother and some other old and new friends to solve the murders.

As always, this series features heiress, PI, and US Marshall Lilly Bennett. As unrealistic as the series is, it is very entertaining. The book is full of colorful and fun characters, from crazy ranchers to transexual rodeo stars. Great fun!

A boring tribute party quickly gets exciting when a commando dressed intruder blows a large hole in Clay Parker, hasbeen cowboy star, before U.S. Marshall Lilly Bennett Jerome can react. Soon Lilly is involved with visiting Las Vegas showgirls, missing Faberge eggs that belong to a former flame of Lilly's and current Mafioso, family feuds over land use, and brother Elias Bennett's pending marriage. And murder after murder.

As satisfying as the previous Bennett books, with more than normal confusion. Lilly's family, friends and associates are a delight, but at the rate people in Roundup are dying, it won't be long until only the Bennetts will be left.

This is my first read by Kelloggand what a kick! One murder afteranother keep US Marshal LilyBennett with no clues but pressureby Janet Reno to get the casessolved. Wyoming has lots of landand lots of people scheming underthe table to get that land. Theauthor tosses humor into the mixand finally puts all the piecestogether to solve them all. Ihad no idea who was behind themurders and there is plenty ofsuspense to keep you reading right up to the end and you finish the book with a smile onyour face knowing that the birthday gal ends up far awayfrom where the party was to beheld. This s just the book toread between the more seriousmurder-mysteries. I intend to readmore of Marne Kellogg's books.

The author, former B29 pilot in WWII, tells us about his 35 missions with the 29th Bomber Group, 314th Bomb Wing, 21st Bomber Command, 20th US Army Air Force, from March thru August 1945. Besides his own career as a military instructor and pilot, Robertson presents several curiosities about the day-by-day life, inicially in several training bases in ConUs and later, in a huge air base on the island of Guam. Included is an epilogue, where are related the post-war fate of several of his crew members and other people related to his combat tour in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

I purchased a copy of this book when it first appeared on the booklists. Being a pilot and an aircraft historian, I completed the book in one long night. To say that Col. Robertson is a terrific writer is an understatement. This book is extremely well writen and holds your attention throughout. I have read many books on WWII and the air engagements within that conflict. I can say without equivication that this is the finest book of that genre. Do not miss this outstanding story!

This is unquestionably one of the very best books written about the aerial battle over the Japanese homeland that eventually defeated the Japanese Empire and brought about the end of World War II. Airplane Commander Gordon Benett Robertson, Jr. eloquently describes his training and the missions of the B-29 Superfortresses of the 20th Air Force. The story of this magnificent aircraft and its crews is must read for all historians.

I like this book although it might lack certain information on several important battles in medieval europe it does however make up with it's beautiful illustrations. I would say this is a good book for people who want to make it simple, and for the serious reader I suggest reading Medieval Warfare: A History. In all even to some it might be a tad bit steep but you wouldnt be disappointed.

Awesome general overview of medieval warfare.

This is really one of the best general books on medieval warfare I have seen. It has two great advantages:

First, it covers the overall strategies of campaigns throughout the ages, with insight into motivations, logistics, tactics, and the like. Few major wars are ignored, and the level of depth pursued is great enough for all but the foremost researchers on the topic.

Second, the book has awesome illustrations representing both overall campaign strategies and the tactics utilized in individual battles. Combined with the detailed descriptions, this has offered me the most insight into how medieval battles were carried out and won.

I highly recommend this book to anyone at all interested in medieval warfare.

This book, and its companion, covering The Middle Ages, 768-1487 and Renaissance to Revolution, 1492-1792, though with different authors, form an elegant pair of references. They cover a period that is infrequently covered in much detail, and rarely illustrated with any maps, much less the excellent examples here. My primary use for these books is as aids when reading both history and, even more, historical fiction such as Sharon Kay Penman, Dorothy Dunnett and Neal Stephenson. These authors write intricately plotted tapestries that rely heavily on movements in historical time, but their publishers include only incidental maps. These volumes supply a much needed reference for readers who are not quite au courant with the 3rd Anglo Dutch War, or the rise of Maratha India. The accompanying text gives an adequate survey of the time, but the primary emphasis is `rightly on the illustrated portion. The maps are beautifully designed, and easily deciphered, covering both individual battles and broader strategic concepts.

Although the term "Middle Ages" often referred to the European age of transistion, other important events went on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea where Islamic science and culture advanced beyond western's comprehension. Apart from the short descriptions on Reconquista, Crusades, and Ottoman Empire (Devlet?), not much were looked into the making of Islamic history.

The appreciated work reflects the serious research done by the authors but discrepancy on Islamic historical accounts slightly missed the "edge".

A comprehensive introduction to the subject

Review Date: 2008-07-18
I learned a great deal from the authors' explicit comparison of their views with those of King, Keohane, and Verba (KKV). Indeed, to a great extent, this book reads like an extended dialogue with KKV. The authors follow the strategy of trying to show that KKV was actually not a unified statement, but rather that Keohane's actual view departs, in significant respects, from what the trio said in their book.

One of the strengths of this book is the excellent discussion of the philosophy of the social sciences and how case studies fit into the quest for knowledge about social phenomena. I found it balanced and informative.

One shortcoming of the book's discussion of "process tracing," which I think is an innovative way of thinking about dynamic analysis, is that the authors seem unaware of event history analysis. Much of their discussion reads as if they still think of social science research as a successive series of cross-sections on the one hand, or detailed narrative presentations of processes on the other. One of the great advantages of event history analysis, which is now widespread in sociology, is that it gives an investigator the ability to do micro level analyses of the timing, pacing, and rhythm of change which would simply not be possible if we were confined to verbal descriptions.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants an alternative to the KKV view of the world and who is also interested in an introduction to how political scientists do case analysis.

For Social Science studies.

i thought that this book was a great comfort read, but one thing about it really bothered me - they were trying to figure out who the miraculous medal with the initials A.M. belonged to, and the only person in the town they could think of was a young girl at the time of the murder. well, what about Adele McCormick, the schoolteacher? she has the right initials, she would've been the right age, and working in the same place as candy would've given her plenty of opportunity to somehow get in a huge fight. i just think that it's really sad that a reader noticed a possible lead that the detective (and therefore author) didn't.

In this, the 3rd Christine Bennett mystery (ex-nun, now teacher/sleuth) she travels to the town where she grew up, to attend her friend's baby's christening.......while walking the the basement of the church, she stumbles upon the skeletal remains of a body.....the town had been buried under water for the last 30 years due to a flooding.... This is my favorite book in the series.......well, actually, EACH Christine Bennett book is my favorite! However, I strongly suggest you get your own copy and sit down for a few hours....once you start this, you won't be making dinner or cleaning the house till you finish!! I suggest reading the series in order if you can, as the author develops the relationship between Christine and Jack Brooks, a policeman, so realistically that you won't want to wait long before reading the next one!! My oldest daughter is reading this series along with me and we've spent many an hour over a cup of tea, discussing Christine Bennett!!! I hope Lee Harris continues this series forever!!

Another Harris mystery that really held my interest.

I really enjoyed the first two mysteries in this series, and this one was even better than the those two. This makes two "old" mysteries that Christine Bennett solves, but I like how she digs down and works at finding the facts she needs. I also like the fact that this character can hold onto the good parts of the life she led as a nun. And that she still feels close to the sisters she lived with for so many years. Again, Christine Bennett comes across as intelligent and caring.

Encouraged by other customers' reviews, as well as my interest in learning more about bridges, I purchased this attractive volume. The price seemed awfully low for a work with such promise and, indeed, the photographs alone are worth more than I paid. But, having gotten through a scant 30 pages in which I encountered some errors easily checked [Xerxes was defeated at Thermopylae? The Etruscans were the forebears of the Greeks? The Brooklyn Bridge was in place in 1858?] I am left to wonder what else is hidden which I didn't spot. Who knows what may lurk in the engineering details of specific bridges and bridge types?

As a modelmaker fascinated with large truss bridges and cable bridges, I had been looking for a good book on the topic -- one which would reveal enough structural detail for me to make a reasonable model for N-scale model train modules and layouts. At the same time, I wanted a book that would show the "famous ones" while also showing new, state-of-the-art megabridges from all over the world. This book does all of that, while giving great coverage of the history of bridges and while showing historical classics. The only thing it didn't do was to provide specific measurements, but the pics and scope of visual data make that needless for most people, anyway. I've looked at others since then to see whether there's a better one out there for my purposes, but I haven't found one.

This is exactly the type of book I was looking for. It's got beautiful four-fold pictures of completed bridges and those still in the construction phase; histories of the most popular bridges and bridge designers; and, my favorite part, a section on the technical aspects of how bridges are made.

It's a great combination of picture book and technical reference for all those interested in bridges.

How many types of bridges can you name? Yeah, yeah...suspension, truss, maybe bascule...but, guess what? There are many more types out there! Different types will give you different costs, sturdiness, aesthetics--you get the idea.

This book begins by explaining the basis types of structures. Then it describes some of the world's greatest spans, and next it talks about bridge catastrophes. Finally it discusses great bridge builders.

Meanwhile, the book is profusely illustrated with incredible photos, mostly color, some even in gatefold format. Sometimes you can even see before & after photos of bridge construction.

Forget about the Eddie Murphy movies - they don't convey the charm and the emotion of the books. This is a particularly good childrens' book, as it has Dr Dolittle becoming involved (against his better judgement) with a circus. The circus intends to exhibit the exoctic pushmi-pullyu, along with other unusual animals. The story of how Dr Dolittle becomes entangled in this mess and manages to rescue a seal is a classic.
You can read this to your kids instead of renting the movie. Yeah, I like Eddie Murphy, too, but he did not convey an emotional connection to the animals.
So get this and read this to your kids - or read it for yourself. It's a great book and a fun read.

The Story of Doctor Dolittle (which began this series) is unfortunately somewhat racist, rather baldly written, but engaging and inventive. The Circus of Doctor Dolittle, a later book in the series, is a vast improvement, keeping all the charm of the original but omitting the flaws.

The plot is more concentrated and has more emotional weight, as Doctor Dolittle becomes entangled with a Circus and attempts to free a performing seal. Their hilarious escape in disguise is one of the most charming incidents in children's fiction.

Really a delightful book, lighthearted, but emotionally involving.

Note: a 3 star ranking from me is actually pretty good; I reserve 4 stars for tremendously good works, and 5 only for the rare few that are or ought to be classic; unfortunately most books published are 2 or less.

In the _Dr. Dolittle_ books, Lofting has created a series with no weak links, and this entry, in which circumstances force Dr. Dolittle to take over the management of a traveling circus, is as entertaining as could be.

Dolittle needs to raise some money to send a dear friend back to his African jungle home, and he reluctantly agrees to participate in a circus in order to raise the money. The ordinarily mild-mannered Doctor becomes righteously indignant when he sees the maltreatment of the circus animals by the ringmaster, an unsavory Mr. Blossom. When Blossom steals away into the night with everyone's money, the good doctor takes on the challenge of running the circus, the Dolittle way. Lofting has fun showing us the details of a utopian traveling circus from the animal's point of view.

By unveiling the cruelty that circus animals endure, Lofting shines a spotlight on a problem that still exists (to a lesser extent) today. At the time that this book was published, circus conditions were truly barbaric, and Lofting has done a great public service without sacrificing a smidgen of the wit and charm that his books are known for.

The Doctor Dolittle books are a magic blend of entertainment, fantasy, morality, and scientific method. Children who are exposed to these elements will be the better for it. And the books are so good that getting the entire series will become a top priority.

I recommend this book as highly as any children's book out there.

As a side note, please don't take the mediocre Eddie Murphy movies as indicative of this series. They have nothing to do with these fine books.

It's about a little girl named Beany. She hears a story about a dolphin sword that can grant wishes, and then she figures out that the person that owned the sword lived in Porridge Hall, which is where she lives. And she goes up in the attic and she finds the dolphin sword, and it grants her wishes. Her mother is really sick, so she wishes that her mother would be better.

I liked it because it was a very good book. It kept leaving me on cliffhangers, so I couldn't put it down.

This story is about a girl named Robin who lives with her mom and dad. She has some friends in her neighborhood who she plays with all the time. My opinion is that people who like books that have people fighting for what they believe in should read it. This is an excellent book to read and this is a book that no one will forget. I think that the people that like books that are funny should read it. People who like books that have caring people in it should read this book

The underlying story of Dolphin Luck is good, but I found it a bit hard to follow. If the story had been told from one character's point of view or if the story would have focused mainly on one character, it would have been easier, I believe, to really understand this book. Instead, the narrator jumps back and forth, following four characters, brothers and sisters, over the course of a few weeks. It was hard to remember which character I was reading about, much less care about the characters, who were not well-rounded. While I am a McKay fan, I had great difficulty when deciding whether or not to continue this book.
