Mary Higgins Clark is one of those contemporary writers who can deliver a great story without graphic sexuality, violence or language. This particular book is one of my favorite Mary Higgins Clark books as it deals with the business of reproductive technologies. Over the last 10 years, I have read it over and over again.
Dependable but enjoyable!

A typical (and dependable) offering from MHC. Although her books are formulaic (beautiful woman in danger has to use her brains and a little outside help to figure out how to save herself and close friends or family members), they are still enjoyable. Although there is the added challenge of figuring out if I've read this particular book before or if it's just because it's all so familiar because of MHC's [tried and true] formula. But then, that's part of the reason that I enjoy her books . . . they ARE dependable. I have almost always enjoyed her books. When I am traveling and need something to fall asleep to in the evenings, I can count on MHC to deliver --- and I can recommend her books to friends and not be concerned about which one they pick up or that they have to be read in order.

This book kept me reading from begining to end. It was great. I especially liked the topic of in vitro fertalization. There was many different elements in the story that lead up to a grand finale at the end. Easy to follow.. and you won't want to put it down. Highly recommend it!

This is a fun read. The main mystery is about Meghan's father. Mehgan tries to unravel whether her dad is dead or alive, if he had a double life, and if he murdered a unqualified fertility doctor after his disappearance. I really liked how all of these story lines flowed together and how they added to the mystery and suspense. I really didn't feel this story line was as predictable as other reviewers felt it was. I went back and forth between suspecting who the real murderer was and the ending surprised me.
I also like how Higgins-Clark developed the characters. That said, Bernie really didn't add anything to this book. I am not sure what Clark needed him for other than to add a disturbed character.
All in all this book did not disappoint.

This book is a great read aloud for young children. Mine can't get enough. I have found them combing over an atlas a few times after our reading sessions. I also think this would be a great read aloud in the classroom, especially before a writer's workshop.

Got this book out of the library, and my young daughter was mesmerized by the extraordinary illustrations, as well as being fascinated by the good doctor, and his ability to speak to his various and highly characterized animal friends.
While it's not the original, I wouldn't have been able to read her the original (not on shelves around the libraries where I live). So, this was a really great way to introduce her.
Since she liked this one so much, she's checked out at least 7 other Dolittle books, so I'm quite grateful to Books of Wonder that they re-did this one and the Story of Dr. Dolittle with the Michael Hague illustrations; they opened a whole world to my daughter, and she can read through a couple of pages at a time herself now that she's 8. Also, we read aloud as the bedtime story, and there's plenty to talk about as far as different time, era, animal behavior, friendship etc. I'd never seen any Hague illustrations before and I was bowled over by them myself. I'm ordering off Amazon as a gift book
As far as the editing/censorship, there's still plenty to talk about in adventures taking place in a different time and place.

I am 54 years old and was raised in a way that the poetry and stories mean something to me because of the era in which I was raised. Purity was prized, discipline by spanking was administered and appreciated in time because the alternative was much worse, which created self-discipline in most things. Honesty, responsibility, compassion, courage and faith have been lost in the last twenty years with the "me" generations getting everything they want with instant gratification. The children of today are about to come crashing down hard with the realities of life without virtues. It isn't easy. Nothing is free, and Bennett has compiled a tasteful way of learning some of the lessons without experiencing them personally, which I can tell you, my generation has experienced in spades. Sure, he could have put other stories in that could have expressed it differently, but these were the stories that moved him most, and when we write our "Book of Virtues" we can add the stories that mean the most to us. Reading the "American Book of Poetry" is where it started. Keep up the reading. Keep up the digging and striving for the virtues listed in the book. America needs people of virtue, people of honesty, even people of faith, because right now, the selfish "Gen-X" generation and their children are about to get our nation blown up by the very arrogance the British had that said we know better because of who we are and what we know. Sadly, they know nothing. They have no true hardship or challenges that forge the steel in their spines. Most can't even throw a punch, because violence has been bred out of them. Well, wake up, people, the world is violent, the world is harsh and tough, and without the virtues of self-discipline, faith and courage, they won't have the perseverance to survive.

This book goes beyond simple meditative practices, by helping the reader free themselves from established maladaptive habits that not only harm others but deteriorate our well being. Tara Goleman combines Buddhists fundamentals with schema therapy to give us a deeper understanding about the dynamic-self that help us to come to better terms with reality.

This is a psychological self-help book which takes the approach of combining 'mindfulness' with 'schema therapy'.
Mindfulness is a Buddhist method of meditation in which the practitioner pays attention to the free flowing thoughts in his mind in order to understand precisely how he thinks and what is behind his thoughts. This is very different from the more well know meditation practice in which these thoughts are dismissed and the mind concentrates on a relaxing point of focus, such as inhaling and exhaling.
Schema therapy is a new form of cognitive therapy which identifies repeat patterns of behavior that originate from disturbed childhood experiences. A schema is a cluster of habits (automatic thoughts and behaviors). There are ten different schemas. The first five schemas originate in early childhood and have to do with parental influence They are Abandonment, Deprivation, Subjugation, Mistrust and Unlovability. The next five schemas originate later in childhood, or even in adulthood, and have to do with peer-group influence. They are Exclusion, Vulnerability, Failure, Perfectionism, and Entitlement. The therapy challenges these bad habits replacing them with more logical, conscious patterns of behavior. Schema therapy was developed by Dr. Jeffery Young, who is a protégé of Dr. Aaron Beck, the founder of cognitive therapy.
The main emphasis of the book is on mindfulness as a method of exploring the motivations of schemas, and of distancing oneself from the habitual behavior by maintaining a calm, distant observation of ones thoughts and emotions. The notion of building equanimity features strongly. Most chapters end with mindful exercises you can try by yourself at home. Schema therapy receives a brief three chapter overview. Then in the next eight chapters schemas are mentioned largely in terms of providing examples of maladaptive behavior on which mindfulness is demonstrated to act. The last four chapters of the book develop the idea of meditation as a method of 'spiritual' development beyond ordinary psychological self-improvement.
If you are interested in learning more about schema therapy try Schema Therapy: A Practitioner's Guide.

Books have been written about mindfulness and they have been written about cognitive-behavioral therapy. The strength of this book is the way in which the author seamlessly combines them and convincingly shows how they complement and enhance one another. In short, mindfulness allows one greater access to experience, to one's own thoughts, emotions, sensations--including the troubling ones, which we so often suppress or avoid. In terms of therapy, awareness is invaluable. But even for someone not in therapy, it's equally essential. Mindfulness allows us to understand and break out of automatic, self-harming patterns. Bennett-Goleman gives a good roadmap of how to accomplish that.

I became so excited about this book that I wanted to see what other people thought about it. While the reviews in the book itself were positive the ones I read here were disappointing. I wanted to write a review that would encourage people to read this book because I found a lot of answers for my personal dilemmas in Tara's book. I was so pleased with the information I got from the book that I bought the CD even though the review I read here for the CD was not positive. I loved her voice and the background music. I identified with the tea ceremony because some one once told me how concentrating on the act of making tea in a teapot added to the relaxation one is usually seeking when stopping to have a cup of tea. I am replaying the CD over and over because my mind wants to resist the enlightenment I experience each time I hear it. I even found a schema that is particularly troublesome for me when listening to the cd that I did not see when I was reading the book. That proved to me how my schemas want to keep me deluded about my true feelings. I have had similar experiences to most of the examples in the book and I got great ideas for addressing them. I particularly got the part about the quarter second opportunity to make a different choice. Now when I get a feeling of dis-ease I turn my awareness on it and begin dialoging with myself about what I am feeling. Now I find that most of the time if I will not react a better outcome will result. I am not willing to do long meditation retreats but i am very interested in meditating more in order to experience that gap where real peace resides. I know it is there and I have felt it in the past and hope to achieve it on a regular basis. I believe we all have the ability to experience it. I do not believe you have to be a Zen monk to achieve the tranquility she speaks of. I am glad I did not read the reviews until after I read the book. If you are co-dependent like I have been it is one of the best explanations for why we are co-dependant and what to do about becoming interdependent like we were supposed to be. I want to thank the Author for writing this book. I especially like the index and Notes. I am grateful to have found this book.

I have not read the book but tried to listen to the audiotape version and found it hopelessly tedious. Some of the problem may be as a reviewer of the CD version mentioned, that the author has no gift for narration.
The mix of Buddhism and psychology, two subjects I usually find interesting, doesn't work, at least as far as I got - two tapes on - before I stopped listening.
The Buddhism focused on the author's near obsession with the Zen tea ceremony, which she describes in a way that makes it sound about as spiritual as operating a Mister Coffee. Whatever she gets out of the tea ceremony, she is not communicating it here. And if you are not fascinated with the Zen tea ceremony this book may not be for you.
Meanwhile, the psychological bits are mostly based on case studies of the type that an old newspaperman used to call the "suspicious anecdote." The author always seems to be a heroic therapist, and the patient seems to attain Buddha-like insights within minutes of their encounter. The stories sound like outtakes from a "can-you-top-this" contest in the bar of a psychotherapists' convention.
In the end, listening to this book felt like having my teeth cleaned by a well-meaning but ham-handed dental hygienist. The best part was the Zen silence after I stopped listening.

This book is a most excellent book for new kitty parents, and also has info useful for old kitty pros. I currently care for 7 cats, and have been owned by cats for quite some time now, but I've learned a lot from Pam's books. My first was Psycho Kitty.
While I was a volunteer with our local humane society I always recommended "Think Like A Cat" to first time kitty adopters. It has all the prerequisite instructions for those who know nothing about cats and are about to be owned by their first kitty...or even the second or third...

In general it was alright. But some of her ideas were too bizarre. You can't teach a cat to come! And her idea of giving cat treats to get them to learn new things? Okay but if you have a cat who needs to lose weight that is not the best thing to be encouraging. Cats are not children. You can't reward them and then decide one day not to anymore. Also, the idea that if you don't play everyday with your cat that you are going to somehow ruin them? Please. I don't play with my cat every day and he is just fine. Also the idea that you have to give your cat the "Right" toys? They are CATS, not children. My cat has several "Inanimate" toys and he doesn't seem bored. Plus many of these interactive toys are not cheap and the fishing rod type toys break.
For the person who said cats belong outside? Maybe so.But I live in an apartment and letting my cat outdoors is out of the questions.
I skipped many parts of the book because my cat does not have those issues. And as for the litter box? I own an automatic one which she seems to frown on and I love it. It is so much easier to clean. If my cat has any problems I can still tell.
Shoe me a cat that can learn to sit and stay and I will show you a frog who can talk!

This book is an excellent tool for the novice or expert cat owner. I've read this book from cover to cover and find it a useful reference tool whenever I'm unsure of how to deal with a situation with my cat. It covers issues such as, how to introduce a second cat to the family, preparing kitty for a new baby, moving day, how to remedy behavior problems, etc, etc. I personally have purchased multiple copies of this book to give to friends and family with cats. Highly recommended.

After reading this book (3rd in Henderson's O'Malley series) I am a fan for life. I've enjoyed all 3 books, but this one was great! I clicked on Amazon.com to find out how many more books there are by Henderson that I have not read -- Oh, joy! There are at least 11 & I own 4 I haven't read yet. Dee Henderson brings her characters to life. Proof of this is that you have no problem remembering who the different characters are as she weaves the sub plots in & out (dropping a hint here & there about problems to be solved in future books). Some books go to the 2nd hand bookstore, but not these!
This is an excellent crime drama.

Shari Hanford has just witnessed the murder of one of her oldest family friends. Her brother and father have both been shot in the process. Marcus O'Malley must protect Shari as the only eyewitness to the crime. He is torn between his duty to his job (and growing feelings toward Shari) and being there for his youngest sister during her cancer treatment. Since Marcus' mother died of cancer, he is also struggling with the issue of unanswered prayer. Can he protect two of the women he loves with his skills and rediscovery of his faith?
I am completely drawn to how devoted this family is to each other. Their resources for supporting each other seem limitless and unrealistic, and I would've liked the author to have dealt with more realistic boundaries (not everyone can jump on a plane whenever something bad happens to someone they love). Still the story was enjoyable.
The other O'Malley novels are: The Negotiator, The Guardian, The Truth Seeker, The Protector, The Healer, The Rescuer. Each is a wonderful read!

I am aware that this novel falls into the Christian literature classification, however the spiritual conflict as well as the romantic aspect of the story falls short and the family dynamic is improbable. As for the "she saw the killer and now she's at risk, so let's send in Mr. Wonderful to protect her", the story has been done to death.
This could, however, be a perfect vehicle for the WE (women's entertainment) cable network to purchase and produce. (All of their shows seem to be of this caliber). The story is sugary, Marcus O'Malley comes across as a combination of Clint Eastwood and Robert Young, and the women in the story are generally portrayed as helpless, in need of a man's love and protection in order to survive. All in all, there isn't a really believable character in the book. (1 1/2 stars)

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book! I bought the first two in the O'Malley series on a trip to US, not willing to risk buying all of them and finding then that I did not like them. I had to order the rest online!
Dee Henderson is a very good writer. Her prose is light, very easy to read and leaves a very nice aftertaste. The mistery unravels quite nicely (and I am an avid mistery reader! I do not settle for just anything) and leaves you wanting more, like a very well done meal: you are satisfied, but you are curious to taste some more.
That said, Marcus is one of the most charming of the O'Malleys, and that is saying a lot! All of the characters are well developed, believable, and they face both the danger and the belief dilema in a very realistic way.
If you are considering getting one of her books, don't hesitate to get all of the book in the O'Malley series!

This book is also very well written, making the reading experience pleasant and easy. Thank you so much, Pam. You are awesome!

Before I purchased this book, I was at my wits end. I have 8 cats and my husband and I were seriously considering getting rid of at least half of them. It was the last thing we wanted to do and we really struggled with it. We had a HUGE litterbox problem (among other things) and I'd become embarrassed to have anyone over because the urine smell in the house was just awful. Some cats had stopped using the box altogether even though I was cleaning them regularly. Everything I'd read about online and discussed with other cat owners and even veterinarians wasn't working. I tried different litters, moving the boxes, buying more boxes and anything else I came across but nothing was working. We also had an issue where 2 of the cats weren't getting along at all. They couldn't even be in the same room together or there'd be a violent confrontation. Also, my carpet, wallpaper, furniture and even door frames were being shredded on a daily basis. About a month ago, I came across this book online and decided to purchase it as a last ditch effort. We decided this would be our last attempt at correcting the problems and the next step was getting rid of them. The day I received the book, I immediately began reading it. There was one suggestion the author gave about litter box problems that I'd never heard before. In fact, I'd always heard the opposite! Anyway, I put this suggestion into play the very next day and I've never looked back! All of my cats are using the boxes and my house smells fresh and clean again. In fact, the problem was fixed immediately. I used to clean up urine and feces several times a day and I swear, I haven't had to clean up either since I got this book! Also, the issue with the 2 feuding cats has improved greatly and all the cats are now scratching where they're supposed too. The 2 cats still don't get along but we've found away around it (as suggested in the book) and everybody is much happier. I don't think I could even put a price on this book for what it's done for our family. With what I was paying for carpet cleaners, steam cleaning, paper towels, litter, more boxes...etc., this book has paid for itself a hundred times over!

I've been rescuing cats for years and saw it all. I can say both of Pam's books are right on target. If you REALLY love cats, read her books. Pam's suggestions take extra time and effort. But, Pets require a lifetime commitment so the extra effort pays off. So many people just throw new cats together and then wonder why they don't get along. Her book also will help if you have dogs and cats.

I bought this book because Payne was one of my favorite golfers. This book was very intresting talked about the ups and downs of life on the PGA tour. I am glad that Payne relized that there is more to life than just golf. Family and relationship with God. This is a must have book.

Hat's off to Tracey for her work in getting this together. Though lacking in specific details of his past behaivors enough is said to allow the reader to understand the change in his character once he accepted Christ. This book is not another Christian testimony. It contains the elements of a what makes a good man. We are all sinners and a perfect picture is not painted here. Payne was a great golfer and a great man that many could learn from. Then again, just act like you think Jesus would have and you will be close to the mark of Payne. Thank you for a great book Tracey.

What an inspirational book based on the life of Payne Stewart. You could literally feel the love that Tracey had for Payne. No, I am sure that Payne wasn't a saint. Who of us is? But, he was a great man, a great father, and a great golfer who is sadly missed by thousands of his fans and followers.
Payne was a devout Christian who was coming into his own. The scope of what his personal witnessing ministry could have become will now be tested in his death rather than his life. I know that it has served to strengthen my testimony and for that I will forever be indebted to Payne Stewart.
Thanks Tracey and kids for sharing Payne with us!

This book has a lot of good channeled info in it , but............some of it does not ring true and there are some contradictions , as with all material, especially channeled, follow your own heart for the truth , but as they say in the book many times "WE are stuck as a race of beings and need outside help" we are holding up the rest of the galaxy and universe by not evolving , it is way past time for us all to evolve !

First caveat I'd put forth - would you rather hear what you'd like to hear, or what you need to hear?
Second - before reading this book, find "Stargate Conspiracy" by Pincknett and Price, read it, then read OPoC.
Third, as you read OPoC, when you hit something truly original, reflect on what it would mean if the world were really as 'Tom' describes it. My husband is of African descent, I am not. If the things in this book are true, that means some things that I, personally, am uncomfortable with. I'd want more corroboration of 'Tom's' credentials than have been provided so far before taking his pronouncements as revealed truth.
Finally, to the true believers who are feeling offended or threatened by these criticisms - take responsibility for the consequences of the beliefs you espouse. Sincerity is not an excuse.

Yes this book makes claims of where we humans originated (among many other things), may be unreasonable to some, but completely feasable to others such as myself. For all the people who will read a book of this type and remain sceptical, at least it will still serve the purpose in expanding your mind to the possibilities. From start to finish it is a completely facinating, mind expanding book that will transform the way in which you view your life and see the world around you. If there was one book I could give to everyone I know, this would be it. P.S. I love the part about Dolfins, since I was I child I had a connection to them, and now know why. Read the book and you'll find out too.

The authors, Drs. Bennett and Indman, provide an excellent overview of perinatal mood disorders in this brief, easy-to-read but complete guide. This is a very helpful book and I recommend and share it regularly. I do wish the authors had included more information about the preventative effect of breastfeeding on women who are at risk for any degree of PPD, and wish they'd mentioned the importance of nursing for bonding with a baby even during the difficult postpartum illnesses they describe. Each woman comes into PPD and finds healing in her own time, and support and treatment are essential. For many mothers, breastfeeding through treatment is very helpful, and I felt as a nursing mom like this book really neglected that area. But overall, this book helped me a lot as a new mother, and as a peer support group facilitator as well. The Spanish version of this book is also helpful and useful in helping mothers who are "hispanoparlantes" or Spanish-speaking.
A must read.....

I did not have the "baby blues" with my first child. However, I did with my second. This book helped me understand postpartum depression. I read this book in about 90 minutes. It helped me understand the different levels and severities of postpartum depression and actually helped me understand my feelings. I think all new mothers should read this book and even after the first child -read it again with next. It made me happy because I realized I'm not alone. I am 8 weeks postpartum now and feel much better. This book helped that process. I just gave my copy to an expecting mother. To me it seems like the best gift to give.

The authors provide a sensitive, comprehensive yet understandable overview of what prenatal and postpartum depression is, the common symptoms and the various treatment options. Succinct and an easy read, it validates the feelings of hopelessness and despair that affect "between 15 and 20 percent of women who give birth each year". The book reviews the six postpartum mood disorders-the largest percentage of which encompasses postpartum depression-along with personal anecdotes from patients and their treatment outcomes. This book provides a non-judgmental, supportive "I've had those EXACT feelings" comfort level for the new mom who is suffering and doesn't know why. There are short chapters specifically for spouses and family and friends with bullet points on what to say and what not to say. Also, it addresses clinicians and offers suggestions on specific questions to ask to determine if someone may be at risk for postpartum depression. Overall, a thoughtfully written book offering a tremendous amount of information and "cut to the chase" explanations on a widely misunderstood but very treatable illness.

Being a PPD survivor, I feel that out of all the books I read, this one was the best. It provided stories I could relate to, factual information about postpartum mood disorders, questions about medication and separate sections for family and healthcare providers.
It is presented in such a way, so that if one is feeling vulnerable it won't create added anxiety.
I still reference this book for education purposes.

I can honestly say that I have purchased about 15-20 books regarding PPD in the last year and this book has been the most informative, encouraging and beneficial to me, along with being easy to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from PPD, or a spouse/friend of someone suffering from this. When you are a sufferer, you find yourself agonizing over why you are feeling the way you do. Finally, someone has written a book that answers all the questions you are asking. This book will help you get through your day, this book will help you realize that this dark cloud will not stay forever, this book will help you get better.
