Not for the faint of heart--dark juicies

After reading these singularly unpleasant but delicious descents into madness (particularly the title tale, "The Thief", which chronicles in a surreal manner a vicious madman's obsession with the Mona Lisa as the personification of Satan), I realized that Heym's work would be neither easy to find nor readily available at mainstream bookstores. In the tradition of Maupassant, Schopenhauer and Trakl, Heym employs dark poetic atmosphere to reveal the futility of human effort and obsesses over life's horrors (in an entertaining, exhilarating way.) Hallucinatory imagery abounds as Heym's wretched, often deranged narrators commit atrocities, believing themselves to be in another state of being then they actually are (case in point: "The Madman"). I'm thinking that Heym's poetry must be in the vein of Brennan, Leopardi, and the more bleak parts of Dante. These tales, however, are not to be taken in large doses for most. Definitely recommended if you're looking for something discouraging, odd and exciting all at once.

Vintage Homemaking

Though previously I was familiar only with the 1930's edition, I recently purchased the 1917 edition. It's great. There are 152 short chapters, which focus on newlyweds Bob and Bettina, their friends and families for about a year. A couple of pages set up the scene, then give the menu for a meal and the recipes. As well as recipes there are tips on stain removal, low-cost decorating, festive table setting, etc... The emphasis is on hospitality, economy, good stewardship, time efficiency, and a pleasant home. It's an insider look at housekeeping in the pre-technology era. One chapter spotlights a trip to the store for a "refrigerator"; after reading a few lines I realized the author was referring to an ice box, and a discussion ensued between Bettina and her friend, Mrs. Dixon, of the merits of the different models (top loading as opposed to front loading of the ice), drip pan and sizes of ice blocks required. One chapter mentions women's suffrage (women didn't get the vote until 3 years later). It's a fascinating look at homemaking during my grandmother's time.

Recipes are fairly easy to follow but don't include recommended oven temperature settings. That information is easily obtained by a similar recipe in a modern book.

The authors are Louise Bennett Weaver & Helen Cowles LeCron. The written description on the title page says: "The Romance of Cookery and Housekeeping Decorations by Elizabeth Colbourne". The illustrations are Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts and charming.

While probably not a book for the ultra-modern, it is a delight for those who enjoy cozy books, like Miss Read, Jan Karon, Anne of Green Gables, Laura Ingalls Wilder, etc...

The tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) was once thought to be simply a curiosity and at best a window into the processes of memory. In a systematic and well thought out manner, Schwartz brings TOT to age as a phenomenon proper suitable for scientific study as a legitimate metacognitive state. This book was written for both the researcher and the scholar, but is of suitable readability and interest to the general reading audience.
Schwartz helps to bring TOT from a mere curiosity to a desirable topic worthy of scientific study. The book is easy to read and is suitable for reading at any stage of an academic career and would make an excellent supplemental text for a course on memory. You won't be disappointed with this book.

It's always nice to see a received idea get a good kicking, and this book does just that. As a trainee antiquarian bookseller, I was admonished never to describe a hand-bound book before 1800 as being in its "original binding". It was argued that 18th-century English books were originally sold unbound. Individual customers supposedly commissioned bespoke bindings for themselves. It was always a faintly ludicrous scenario (as if every literate gentleman had his own personal bookbinder toiling away in a garden shed somewhere), and Stuart Bennett thoroughly exposes it here. By the time he's finished, you will be thoroughly convinced by his thesis that in Britain at this time probably 80% of books were sold already bound, in various categories of trade bindings, from simple sheep up to expensive red morocco, with varying degrees of gilt decoration, and priced accordingly by the bookseller. It's well-argued, well-illustrated and well over-due. The next step will be for scholars to identify specific bindings and tools associated with the various publishing houses, but they will be building on the groundwork laid down here.

Great Money Management Book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-27
Just got my book delivered from Amazon a couple of days ago -- two weeks early! Was at the LA Trader's EXPO last week and everyone was trying to buy this book but it wasn't out yet -- so I'm glad it's here early.

The book covers McDowell's philosophy on Money Management which encuorages you to always set a stop BEFORE you enter a trade. By doing that you can then determine your risk amount on each trade by adjusting your trade size to ensure no more than -- say -- 2% loss on any one trade - based on your entry and your initial stop.

Then based on your current payoff ratio and win ratio you can go to the risk-of-ruin tables and customize what your risk truly should be. Based on your current performance maybe you should be risking less than 2% or maybe more. Thing is you want to refer to the risk-of-ruin tables to find out what percent risk gives you a ZERO "probable" (not guranteed) chance of ruin. This subtle adjustment can make a difference on improving your payoff ratio. And there is a sample of a risk-of-ruin table in the book so you can see how it works.

The other tool in the book that I like is the record keeping forms that help track and calculate payoff ratio and win ratio. Anyway, this is a great money management book with lots of formulas and tools to help design your own system.

Grass roots methods for training bird dogs
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-28
I am the son of Logan J. Bennett and as a young child witnessed this book unfold. I also watched my dad train many dogs, mostly English Setters. He had a wonderful way of communicating with animals which also made him a very astute observer when it came to picking pups. While I cannot recite many of the lessons in his book, I will say that he taught me much about dog handling and training. Dad's dogs were always very disciplined. No bird dog ever was a house dog, and they seemed to always hunt for him until they dropped. His dogs also enjoyed the benefit of a great shot and thus had many retrieves. I once witnessed a friend drop a woodcock and the dog retrieved it to my dad who was over a quarter of a mile away. In closing, the prospective reader should not rule out other types of upland dog training just because of the title. Dad's dogs probably were on point over more pheasants and quail than they were over grouse and/or woodcock. I hope you enjoy his book.
