In "Sacred Blood, Sacred Image - The Sudarium of Oviedo" Janice Bennett skillfully analyzes the history, forensics, etymology and religious basis of the Sudarium, a bloodstained cloth kept in Oviedo Spain.

Bennett's traces the history of Sudarium from the earliest mentions of it in early Christian century Palestine, linking it to Christ's burial cloth. She makes a convincing argument that the Sudarium was transferred from the Holy Land to Northern Spain following the Persian and Arab invasions of the 7th and 8th centuries. She then painstakingly analyzes the linen and the blood stains, painting a picture of how this linen cloth once covered the head of an adult man. This is followed by a fascinating comparison between the Sudarium and the Shroud of Turin. In this comparison, she makes a powerful case that they were both placed on the same crucified man.

The book then provides two chapters outlining first century Jewish burial customs and how the Sudarium is mentioned in the New Testament. As well, Bennett has added numerous colour images of the Sudarium, places mentioned in the book and a map of its historical journey, as well as a chronology and glossary.

If you are curious about the Sudarium or the Shroud of Turin and would like to read a very thorough study of the topic, you would definitely enjoy reading this book. Also, if you are interested in being introduced to scientific arguments in favor of Jesus' crucifixion, read this book, it is an excellent starting point.

This book is an analysis of the arrangements of sails used on sailing vessels of all types from the traditional ship rigged vessels of the past to the modern trimaran sailed by Ellen MacArthur on the fastest single-handed circum-navigation ever.

The rigs for sailing ships have been developed over the centuries to meet a wide variety of criteria. Among them: The material from which the sail is made must be strong enough to stand up to the wind. Also the weight of the sail, especially in the days when muscle power alone was all they had, had to be light enough to be handled by the size of crew available -- different of course on a warship and a commercial vessel.

This book is clearly the result of a great deal of knowledge about sailing rigs. There are pictures from the dawn of photography down to last year. They show a wide variety of rigs from full ship rig to simple catboat. The copy that goes with the pictures gives a history of the rig, some description, and perhaps discusses a point or two where the photograph might be different from the general rule.

This is a very enlightening book.

I especially love the art in this one. BRAVO! It is a very cute story, but, I bought this one for the illustrations. This might be a must for anyone fond of Collies.

I teach kindergarten and they love picking this one up for independent reading! It's rare to find nonfiction suitable for busy learners.

He is an incredible colorist, rich, handsome and painterly. A body of work that rivals Rothko.

Being someone who loves the ocean I loved reading poems about them. Even though they are directed towards children I still enjoyed reading them. The pictures were bright and colorful. They made you want to get up and do to the beach! My favorite poem was "Goodness gracious" because it reminded me of my grandmother. When we would visit her in Florida she would always swim laps in ocean and all we could see was her bright swimming cap. All of the poems in this book are fun to read. They poems range from getting sand in you lunch, to sea shells and rocks, and to the boats in the harbor. These would be great to read to a young class if your teaching them about the ocean.
