Bennett Books

Having worked for several years as a teacher on the Navajo Reservation, RAINY'S POWWOW brings to mind the wonderful children with whom I've worked and their beautiful cultural heritage. This book is a loving tribute to a people the author obviously respects. It is written with honesty and authenticity to show the color, pagentry and formality of the proud Native American tradition of Powwow. The underlying themes of honor and giving celebrate values we all hope to instill in children from any cultural background. I look forward to using this beautiful story as a teaching tool in my classroom for years to come.

This is a good guide to raising rabbits for meat production. Not only does he tell you how to do things, he says why. He also tells you what not to do and why. Easy to understand, yet very informative.

This is a fantastic book - more of a reading companion - by Rachelle Knight (goodreads author too!). It's essentially a journal to keep track of your books, a real life version of goodreads, but with much more to it. It's loaded with lists, like National Book Award winners (which is great since I have a collection for my daughters of signed first edition NBA winners growing), Pulitzer, Man Booker, etc.... And it allows you to check off whether you've read them or not, want to read, etc and gives you space for handwritten notes on each one.

My two favorite features so far are the "Biblio Pages", which allow you to keep all your notes on a book in one place (including words to look up later (yes, we ALL still run into those), favorite passages/quotes, and any comments or notes; my second favorite is the "Loaner Lists" where you can keep track of all the books you've borrowed or lent out.

For those of us who have too much going on to remember all this sort of stuff, I highly recommend this book. Although certainly good for mature readers, I also think it could be very useful for a junior high / high schooler who is starting to seriously enjoy reading literature --it helps to jot down thoughts while reading and do so in an organized way. Those class papers will be a lot easier a few weeks from now ....

This is an absolutely awesome book (though I checked it out of my campus library since it was too pricey for an English Dept. Graduate student) and has probably saved my keister on a project for a Dickinson class. Using it I was able to demonstrate how our superficial readings that, as in the case of "The Bible is an antique Volume--", have Emily condemning God could be shown to be completely backwards! Thanks for an awesome resource book! Maybe someday I'll be able to afford it;)!

Amazons have captured the Western imagination for thousands of years; in fact I'm currently writing a dissertation about the Greek legends. Bennett's book is from the early part of the twenieth century. While it is clear that she accepts to a large degree cultural evolutionary theories, her book is actually one of the first to attempt to analysis the legends themselves. Her focus is on connections between Amazons and religious rites or deities. Scholarly from this period will sound weighty and seem less than ideally cited, but her book is often used by scholars looking at the legends and political thinkers using the Amazons for their own agenda so it is good to be aware of her work if the subject interests you. I'm so glad I was able to find a copy available.

This is quite simply the best book on the Ricci Flow that I have ever encountered. This is the only book on the Ricci Flow that I have ever encountered. I believe that its value to the development and application of geometric analysis for the study of manifolds is incalculable (no pun intended). I must say, I have never seen nicer functions or such improved metrics. I am particularly impressed by by the talents of the second author, Dr. Dan Knopf, as displayed in this fine publication. His commanding grasp of the material, lucid and thought-provoking presentation, and fine expository style are nothing short of breathtaking. I am pleased to recommend this excellent work.

Michael Bennett's new book about Richard II is thorough and thoughtful, much like his previous books on the Wars of the Roses. Many previous studies of Richard II have focused on the possibility of his decline into insanity. Bennett's book does not dwell on this at all, rather focuses on his actions and the consequences. The period around 1399 is very convoluted and Bennett sorts it out well. Since most accounts of the abdication/deposition were writtern by Lancastrian sympathizers, it was very interesting to read a well-reasoned, balanced account. (By the way, the Amazon entry for the book is incorrect; it should be Richard II and the Revolution of 1399 - not 1339!)

Ring Out Wild Bells is beautifully illustrated anthology of poetry. The illustrations are warm and detailed (done in both color and black and white) and the poetry is powerful. It's a delightful book to share with children and adults alike. The book is designed chronologically so that page-by-page just about every holiday is celebrated. There are a plethora of holiday poems to choose from. Sprinkled among these holiday poems are poems about the change of seasons, one's own birthday, the first and last day of school, wild geese flying south, and there is even a poem celebrating turning back the clock in winter and turning the clock ahead in spring. With famous authors such as Langston Hughes, e. e. cummings, Carl Sandburg, Robert Frost, Tennyson, and Martin Luther - just to name a few - how can one go wrong by introducing this book to their children? Finally, the illustrations will intrigue any child as well as pique their imagination. It's a wonderful book that any elementary school teacher should have on their bookshelf.

While not the largest reference on Rolls-Royce & Bentley, this book is one of the most pleasurable I've read on the subject. It is very well presented, concise, informative and readable.

Beginning with the first Royce cars of 1904, the book continues chronologically through the 1996 models. I most enjoyed the sections on the Silver Ghost & those on the later models which are given equal coverage with the popular middle year cars.

The numerous illustrations are very well selected. Especially nice are chassis line drawings for most models and many good interior photos. The color photo gallery in the center is beautiful.

Another useful feature is a technical specification chart, including chassis numbers, for each series. If you would like to invest in just one book to tell the story of Rolls-Royce & Bentley, this would be an excellent choice.
