The legend of Old Hoss Radbourn continues to grow with this book. While little is known of Old Hoss, this book brings to life what he may have been like. It's total speculation but is based upon some fact. If we all like to believe that baseball started in Cooperstown and that the Babe really called his shot, then maybe we'll like to believe that this is an accurate portrayal of Old Hoss. For anyone interested in the life and times of Charles Radbourn this is obviously a must read even though it's mainly speculation. However, this is also a fine peice of literature. It is written more in the style of a novel than of a biography and is just a fun read. Anyone who is into baseball history would surely find this an interesting read.

I love historical fiction. It is my favorite type of book. Good historical fiction makes history come alive for the reader, and this novel, which is based on the life of a real person named Thomas Savage, does exactly that. It begins in July, 1607, at Kent County, England, where young Tom is the second son and thus can never inherit his father's estate, all of which will got to his older brother Arnold. So he chooses to serve Captain Christopher Newport as cabin boy on board the John and Francis which is taking additional settlers and supplies to the new colony of Jamestown in Virginia. He tells his mother that he will be back before the new year. However, the ship is delayed by doldrums, Tom becomes ill with a fever, and the captain has to spend more time in Santo Domingo than planned, so they do not even arrive in Jamestown until January of 1608.

Tom, rather than returning to England, agrees to be exchanged for Namontack, one of the sons of the Great Wahunsonacock Powhatan, Pocahontas's father. Both groups hope this will foster good relations between the English and the Powhatans. During the two years that Tom is "one among the Indians," his life is intertwined with those of Pocahontas and John Smith. He makes friends with another son of the Great Powhatan named Pokatawer and experiences several attacks by settlers against Indians and Indians against settlers. Because of the tensions between the two groups, he finally returns to Jamestown. The book ends four years later with the marriage of Pocahontas (now called Rebecca) and John Rolfe.

Will Tom survive future hostilities between the two sides? Or will he decide to return to England? After the last chapter, the author tells a little more about what became of many of the individuals mentioned in the book. Some of the characters, names, incidents, and dialogue are either the products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously, but the basic events portrayed in the book are real and Thomas Savage was Martha Bennett Stiles's great8-grandfather. She grew up on a James River goat farm near where he had been held hostage. There is not much historical fiction for young people that covers this period of American settlement, so this book serves a very useful purpose. I for one am very glad that it is now available again as an Authors Guild Backinprint.com Edition. It is well written and filled with adventure. I truly enjoyed reading it.

This is a wonderful book! I have been carrying around
with me for weeks, reading it and rereading it. Leiris'
book consists of diary-like notations, rather than
carefully organized essays. This fact does not detract
from its value. On the contrary, Leiris' style provokes
the reader to further reflections on the topic at hand.
It encourages you to elaborate upon his seminal ideas.
Since the author's remarks frequently place specific operas and particular performances in the context of cultural and
social history, of aesthetics and other disciplines, this
book would be of great interest to anyone interested in the
arts. I teach literature, not music or theater, and I
am finding it immensely useful as well as enjoyable.
Anyone interested in the mythic aspects of opera and
narrative art in general owe it to themselves to take a
serious look at this book. Leiris is the best kind of critic: an enthusiast who is insightful and not at all doctrinaire.

Individual freedom is desired by all. Seperateness and superiority are groundwork for social and individual madness. Why we don't read this book is only because of lack of awareness. If someone does read this writing, one will not be able to talk of the need for others to do the same. In reading this brief essay, one will find out how much freedom we are yet to enjoy. ***** five star ***** A must reading for every Sociology student and Phsychology student as well. But mostly for those who do not want a quick fix, but a directiont that will lead for the complete journey. Freedom is now. Read and see.

This was such an amazing book. As a teacher-in-training, after reading this book, I am so excited about teaching a genre that I have so much difficulty with. I wish my elementary school teachers had this book available to them. After the sections talking about how important poetry is in a child's life, the section on biographies are so useful, which have detailed info about some books by that author. The activities didn't seem very interesting. Because I plan to buy this book, I will mainly use it as a buying guide for poetry books for my classroom.
