Prof. Bennett has done painstaking research to give readers excellent selections from scores of neglected 19th-C. women poets and to provide biographical background on them. Her individual commentaries on the poets reflect her broad knowledge of poetry (providing crucial context). They also display a great sense of humor. I actually found these delightful to read - refreshing to feel there is a person behind them. Cheryl Walker's anthology was a groundbreaker in the field, but those since have tended to be disappointing - as if picking up the leftover poems from Walker. Such is not the case for Bennett's collection. She has dug up some *new gems* for us to admire. A particular find for me was the poetry of Sarah Piatt. Bennett proves that nineteenth-century women poets deserve to live! As a scholar, I found the book to be a genuine resource. I have not yet used the anthology for teaching, but I think it would be useable in the classroom (esp. for a course on women's poetry or 19th-C. poetry). Interested laypersons will find it accessible. When one considers the incredible amount of work that went into this book, a real bargain!

No Other Place is the third book in Irene Bennett Brown's Women of Paragon Springs series. Aurelia Symington, who was born to the comforts of the South,is widowed, penniless and left with small children. She survives a bleak journey to Kansas only to be quickly abandoned by her brother-in-law after she arrives at his desolate homestead appealing for help. In the first book, Long Road Turning, Aurelia was befriended by the compassionate women of Paragon Springs, who all too well understood the rigors of life at the survival level. Aurelia's yearning for safe places, safe people and her aversion to loss nearly undermines her chances of lasting romance. However, as the series develops, against all odds, she not only overcomes her fear of taking risks with people, she accepts the burdensome but exhilarating position as president of the town company. With this book, the reader of this fascinating series begins to understand the breadth and depth of Brown's research. No Other Place with its lively depiction of town-building is energized by the struggle to bring civilization to the prairie. This volume also details little known aspects of the bloody county seat fights that plagued Kansas and the underhanded tactics used to attract the all-important railroads. Her depiction of the constant struggle of Kansans to cope with extreme weather is superb. As we have come to expect from this first-rate author, Brown's skillful portrayal of women's issues under-girds all the action.

Oatmeal and the Catechism: Scottish Gaelic Settlers in Quebec My grandparents came to Canada in the late 1800s from Lewis, Scotland. When I saw this book title, I was hoping for information about life in those early days. I was absolutely thrilled to discover the book included the story of my gandmother and her sister, their journey from Scotland, and their life in Canada. I have communicated with the author, and hope to meet her some day. For me, this book is a treasure!!!!!!!

This book was written by my stepmother and her father; it is a great fictionalized history of the Mormons, covering five generations of one family and their experiences as Latter-Day Saints. Very well-written, and an enjoyable read.

OF MEN AND GODS, by Julius C. Bennett
Man is no freak. He is no accident of biological evolution. But what is the nature, the range and the scope of the force or power which brought him into existence? And to what end?
Is man isolated from that force or power? Can he hope to communicate with or influence it to his own purpose? If so, to what extent?
These and many more similar questions are explored in this book, all leading to definite but unusual conclusions, which in turn clearly point the way to a true understanding of the fundamental nature of man, his basic character, his ultimate destiny as an individual and as a race, his relationship to all other life forms and his position in the cosmos in the broadest context.

The legend of Old Hoss Radbourn continues to grow with this book. While little is known of Old Hoss, this book brings to life what he may have been like. It's total speculation but is based upon some fact. If we all like to believe that baseball started in Cooperstown and that the Babe really called his shot, then maybe we'll like to believe that this is an accurate portrayal of Old Hoss. For anyone interested in the life and times of Charles Radbourn this is obviously a must read even though it's mainly speculation. However, this is also a fine peice of literature. It is written more in the style of a novel than of a biography and is just a fun read. Anyone who is into baseball history would surely find this an interesting read.
