This is an excellent compilation of Alan Bennett short stories and plays that I would recommend to anyone who enjoyed his "Talking Heads" series and the more popular "History Boys". A true genius with a wry sense of humor.

A challenging musical exploration

Guitarist Stephen Bennett has recorded 15 albums between 1988 and 2003. Although recently making quite a name for himself as a harp guitarist, Bennett is also a master of 6- and 12-string guitars. This flatpicking collection features twelve guitar solos for a variety of tunes. The companion CD runs 37 minutes, and it can stand alone as an impressive work or guitar artistry by itself. The traditional "Blackberry Blossom" has a unique arrangement. Richmond, Cooley's Reel, and Snowflake Reel call for a drop-D tuning, and a few pieces (Indian Nation) require a "nearly open G tuning" (with the first string staying at E). Afton Mountain, The Forest Floor, Little Martha, and Waltz for a Maple Tree instruct us to only partially capo the strings, leaving the sixth string open. Written in standard notation and tablature, this book is geared for an advanced player. The author admits that some of the tunes are a little "quirky, screwy, twisted or strange." Bennett offers a few witty observations in the performance notes like "no hate mail please" or "I'd suggest a slower tempo and a psychiatrist." Bennett's flatpicking collection is a challenging musical exploration. His innovative licks and techniques will also get you thinking outside the box. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

"..offer .. hope for the future..presents his views without bias.. chapters are thorough and informative without being technical.. segment on grief touched on all its stages from shock to denial, from bargaining to anger, from guilt to acceptance. That these schema affect 'just about everyone' is a fact - how their effects help to define mental illness is the facinating part. The author goes on to help the reader understand his/her schema in various ways..powerfully presents a first hand accountof his own process to not only understand his schema but also reducing the effects they played in his illness. Another important segment has to do with journaling..the details of each excercise and how it can be used on the road to recovery is very enlightening. Throughout the book he evokes moments of anger, sadness, love and a host of emotions on his road to recovery. The reader comes away with the feeling of wanting to know more about his life." Presumming you know something about SQL and NT. This book combined, with MSSQL's ease of use, provides a powerfull combination of escorting someone with limited Data Base Administration knowledge to a running and functioning data base. Each knowledge step from installation to using the installed PUBS data base is described in precise detail. The authors right on. "Bon voyage" By contrast, Oracle Unleashed, from the same publisher is the antithesis of Microsoft SQL Server Unleashed.

The central problem in contemporary psychiatry is to understand and sort out the bewildering variety of ways in which we conceptualize the origins, nature, and treatment of mental illness. This book attempts to deal with that problem by exploring the thinking of Greek antiquity, a vital period in the history of psychiatry.

Even defining the scope of modern psychiatry is a formidable task. Yet without some sense of what psychiatry is, it is impossible to write anything about its history, let alone use the past to illuminate the psychiatry we know today. I shall explore this difficulty and sketch some previous attempts to define the connection between ancient and modern psychiatry before going on to discuss in detail the ancient precursors and analogues of contempory models of mental illness. With an examination of Homer, the tragedians, Plato, and Hippocrates I explore the nature and origins of the two fundamental polarities in psychiatry today: the intrapsycic vesus the social model of the origins and treatment of mental disturbance, and the medical vesus the psychological model. The application of all these models to the elucidation of one particular condition is presented in a case study of hysteria. I shall conclude with a consideration of the requirements for a synthesis of these divergent perspectives.

Intriguing International Adventure!

Review Date: 2008-03-22
This book was amazing. There was just so much to the story and it kept me interested through the entire thing.

Let's begin with explaining the members of the "Reel Kids Adventure Club". First, there's Warren (he's the adult in the group), and then the kids: Jeff & Mindy (who are brother & sister) and K.J. All 3 kids go to the same high school, where Warren is the head of the school's communications department. The club's purpose is to go to foreign countries and film what they see and do (that is where the "Reel" comes into the club's name). When they come back home, they'll share what they learned, to other kids at their high school, especially concerning the country's religion, which was the main focus of the international trip.

In this book, the team is off to Cuba. Leaving all just and fair laws about religion back in the United States, the Reel Kids are constantly being pestered by the Cuban officials, every inch of the trip.

They want to tell people about Christianity and lead new people to Jesus Christ, but of course, those ideas are all foiled by Cuba's strong laws. Plus, the secret police could be on the look-out at any time and place. The team is allowed to give speeches in front of a church congregation, but everything the Reel Kids do is being watched by authorities somehow, which makes matters very complicated.

As the trip wears down to the end, the Real Kids aren't even for sure if they'll be let out of the country to return home! All that they know is that God is on their side.

A Brilliant and Articulate Study

Review Date: 2001-10-31
I found this study of Bennett's writing much more than a useful critical discussion of Modernism and Modernity. While many critical works on literature are hard going, this one is remarkably articulate, written in lively and engaging prose that made me want to go out and read everything Bennett wrote. For anyone interested in Modernism as a literary movement, this study provides a sophisticated analysis of the function of content as well as form in the modernist project. It takes on Woolf's criticism of Bennett's work as "traditional realism" in such a way that reveals him to be a much more complex and interesting writer than she gives him credit for; the short discussion of Bennett's reaction to Woolf's work is particularly telling. This is truly a worthy book.
