You Can't Go HomeReview Date: 2007-09-21
He follows the journey made by one H.V. Morton who travelled through England in 1926 in a Morris bullnose Cowley. Morton was "In Search of England" and that was the title of the book he wrote about his trip.
Joe Bennett starts out with the idea of hitchiking and discovers nobody does that in England anymore. Borrowing a car from a friend he follows Morton's footsteps and finds a much changed country. The "nation of shopkeepers" that Napoleon thought unworthy of fighting is no more. Tesco superstores have sprouted everywhere and destroyed the High Streets of every town. Lager-fuelled louts make life a misery for everyone. And, the monstrous spin of the New Labour regime of Tony Blair has infected the entire country with a belief that bad policy can be made good if you just talk it up enough.
But this is a wonderful piece of writing. More wonderful and unique metaphors per page than you have a right to expect - "a grim-faced mother jogging, her infant strapped into a streamlined buggy like an astronaut at take-off." The whole book is filled with wry humour and a wistful longing for the England he knew as a young man and that has gone forever. Joe Bennett is disappointed in what he finds; H.V. Morton would probably keel over with a cardiac arrest.
For me it was a real tonic; lovely book.

A true template in overcoming one of life's lowest blowsReview Date: 2002-03-02
I particularly liked the way the author honored his hero, Steve Sax, the once baseball great, to help overcome the horrible memories of child abuse.
Not only is this book an exceptional tool for those wishing to reconstruct their abused psyche; but to all parents on planet Earth, who ever said a mean word to their child.

An Exquisite & Essential Read Which Completes Every Cook's LibraryReview Date: 2005-12-14
Extraordinary Melbourne chef, Shannon Bennett, has collated a unique collection of recipes that reflect the culinary excellence that is Vue de Monde, the Gourmet traveller 2005 Restaurant of the Year.
Clear and precise instructions as to both ingredients and technique combine with tantalising photography and beautiful illustrations that inspire and give confidence to even the novice.
Only after I visited Vue de Monde and cooked from this book did I finally come to appreciate and understand what is, French cookery. When asked if I have eaten there, I feel obliged to answer by saying I have had a great experience there as opposed to simply enjoying a meal. Pretentious? That is not my intention. Rather, I simply seek to differentiate between a unique experience and another fine meal.
When cooking, I started with the sublime Cold-Pressed Tomato Soup and was stunned with the results. The mushroom risotto which owes its depth of flavour to an incredible acid butter, gives an entirely new meaning to risotto. And the list goes on...
The chapters are helpfully organised according to ingredients concluding appropriately with ( what else) chocolate. However, we found it hard to push past the potato chapter.
Finally in support of this review, please note the forward of this special book is by Paul Bocuse who most eloquently says ".. But men of the quality of this chef, know how to leave their mark on the world of cuisine...Congratulations and all my best wishes of success go with him."
I hope you do buy this book and soon.

THE book to read on the German army in the inter-war periodReview Date: 2004-07-19
Wheeler-Bennett was an insider, a member of the Duff Cooper-Winston Churchill group, who lived in Germany for a considerable part of the inter-war period, until a fortuitous combination of a trip and a warning enabled him to escape being killed during the "Night of the Long Knives." He maintained clandestine ties with some dissident members of the German General Staff through the war, and directed the Allies' organization and publication of the German Archives thereafter.
"Nemesis of Power" is not a quick read, but it is absolutely fascinating, and it still has a great deal of invaluable information more than forty-five years after its writing.

Eyewitness To HistoryReview Date: 2007-09-24
JW-B was of a conservative - or Right Wing disposition - and was himself something of a controversial figure - given his views of the resistance movement against Hitler.
Another work of his (for students of the period) would be his book; Brest-Litovsk: The Forgotten Peace.
