Fire and Spice by Karen van de Zee (Large Print Harlequin)

This is the first book I've read from Karen van der Zee ... and after I finished I immediately went and ordered some more of her books. Needless to say, I really liked this book! The characters are so well written after reading their story I really felt that I knew them. This is one book I'd love the author to write a sequel for ... I'd be fascinated to hear how Bryant and Zoe's marriage turns out, whether Nick ever found his one true love, and about Paul and Kako's adventures!

Description from the book back cover:

'He was a man to build a life with, a man to be the father of her children.' To Zoe Langdon, Bryant Sinclair was a dream come true - an almost perfect Mr Right with an instant family to boot! There was just one problem - whatever was going on between them was clearly going to be a temporary arrangement. Deserted by one woman, Bryant had no desire to let another get close. He would kiss Zoe, make love to her even, but, despite the fire and spice their relationship promised, he was quite prepared to let her go!

Mr. Bennett has written an excellent book for fire professionals. He covers a wide range of topics and uses past case law to explain where firefighters have gone wrong. I have always been very interested in fire and EMS law, and this book is by far the most thorough in explaining various cases.

This book should be a mandatory study source for any promotional exam. It would definitely help fire officers to avoid negligence or the grey area surrounding it.

This is the second book by illustrator, Erin Banks, that I have purchased and I continue to be amazed at her work. Ms. Banks' work has felicity and a unique form that gives depth and texture to the story. My oldest daughter, a first grade and pre-school teacher, has used Ms. Banks first book, A Patchwork Path, and this newest book to teach her students important lessons about family and working together. I can't wait till Ms. Banks next work is published.

Important series!

The sheer scope and importance of Irene Bennett Brown's series, the Women of Paragon Springs culminates with her fourth book, Reap the South Wind. The aviation industry was born in Kansas! The first helicopter is displayed in a museum in Goodland, Kansas. Brown brings history to life with these superb books and one's awareness of the centrality of Kansas to American history grows exponentially with each volume. One of the marks of excellence in any novelist is the ability to see stories and the importance of struggles where others cannot. Brown vividly demonstrates that her inner vision is second to none. The panorama of the Great Plains is realized with Reap the South Wind. The story turns to Lucy Ann Walsh, and the rough and tumble period of Kansas Populist politics. Mud-slinging was developed to a fine art and there is plenty to expose in Lucy Ann and her brother Lad's past. Opponents do not hesitate to sabotage Lad's run for governor. Having lost her husband in the famous Run to the Cherokee Strip, Lucy Ann had planned to spend the rest of her life living quietly on her little parcel of land. She changes when she attempts to shield her new neighbor and his ridiculous flying machine from constant ridicule. She gains further notoriety as a suffragette and avid advocate for health and sanitation. The triumph of a town and the indomitable spirits of the courageous women who founded the durable community is Americana at it's finest. Well done!

Read The Flex of the Thumb! You'll laugh out loud!

Review Date: 1996-07-10
Vano Lucas, the back cover of the book says, "is the best pitcher basebal has ever seen." He stands on the mound, terrorizing pimple-faced high school batters with his 115 MPH fast balls, and 98 MPH sliders, while dreaming of how much beer he can drink and how many women he will have when he gets famous. Vano's father, Vernon Lucas, acts as his agent, and gets Vano a tryout with the Oakland Athletics. The tryout, however is not to see if he will make the team, oh no, that's already been guaranteed. The tryout is to see whether Vano's signing bonus will be 15 million dollars or 25 million dollars. However, Vano fools Jose Canseco so badly with a change-up, that Canseco loses his grip on his bat, and lets it fly, hitting Vano in the forehead, and knocking him out. When he wakes up, he is a profoundly changed person. He has no interest in baseball, but instead, he wants to go to college. Thus begins the uproarious comedy of The Flex of the Thumb. Reminiscent, at times, of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Monty Python among other classic comedy sources that were obviously influences on Bennett, the most impressive part of The Flex of the Thumb is the descriptions of the characters as they roll off the pages. This procession of quirky, peculiar people is guaranteed to bang your funny-bone, and remind you of someone you have known. Bennett has created a piece of work that is not only seriously funny, but written with integrity, and carefully constructed so that all the pieces fit perfectly into place. More importantly, however, Bennett's informal, easy-going writing style makes The Flex of the Thumb enjoyable and accessable for readers of all ability levels. Although probaly not acceptable for an extremely young readership because of content, The Flex of the Thumb is perfect for anyone interested in baseball, college life, or comedy of any kind.

Jamie Dobrin is witty, intelligent, and very popular with guys...on her computer. In real life she gets tongue-tied and nervous especially around her crush Nick. To make matters worse her best friends have changed to become these boy-crazy girls. They don't seem to care about the Webzine that they all produce. Then Jamie finds the LoveRock and makes a wish. Suddenly no guy can resist Jamie's charm and she can't seem to control who she flirts with. And now her firends hate her. What's a girl to do?

A great conclusion to the Mirror Image series. I loved all the books!

In London the war is looming, but still Lily and other nurses meet many men including Alex Redfern. But war is declared, instead of dancing, Lily finds herself treating bomb victims. "For Love of Lily" is the first book that I read by Maggie Bennett and it was really good. The characters are good and the pace of the flows well. Any fan of war-time novels will want to check out this book.

An inspirational romance, FORGOTTEN turns a over-used, soap-opera plot device into a riveting mystery, a marvelous love story, and a read that is swift and turbulent, fraught with the unexpected, and just plain enjoyable. Battered by what she learns was a fall, a woman wakes in a hospital with a broken leg, sundry bruises, stitches, aches, pains, and no memory of her past. A woman claiming to be her dead parents' housekeeper identifies the mystery woman as Kat Cavanaugh, a famous model, and takes her home to an isolated house in the mountains of Northern California where the only neighbor is a ranch for troubled boys--with a director that is not only hostile to her personally but is also one of the best-looking men Kat, if that is actually her name, has ever seen.

Other than paraphrasing what is on the back cover, to wit: Kat begins to wonder if she is Kat, but what she can't know is that a dangerous man, who doesn't want her to regain her memory, is watching her every move. To say any more than that, would give the rest of the plot away, and it's too good a read to do that to other readers. The characters are deftly drawn, completely believable, and show many of the faults man is heir to--temper, lack of faith, anger. How they work through their faults, find common ground, and resolve their differences makes FORGOTTEN truly unforgettable.
