BENNETT REALLY HELPS DUMMIES
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-09
This is an amazingly intuitive book. Bennett anticipates just about everything a life-long non-cook could encounter. If you know anyone who has suddenly been thrust into a situation where they must cook food which is appealing to them, this book is for that person.

Start with the very, very basics like cooking pre-cooked rice, cooking greens or browning onions. It's there. Out of an ingredient? Learn timely substitutes.

After the Contents at a Glance, find Recipes at a Glance listed by description (six pages of them). These include entertaining suggestions, "Especially for Two," 20-Minute Main Dishes and 15-Minute-or-Less Main Dishes. The actual Table of Contents is seven pages in length! Repeated eye-catchers offer hand-held tips such as "Caution," "Remember," or just plain "Tip." Taking a new cook by the hand is further evidenced with the 19-page index.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Following the Grain Trail
Herb Chart
How to judge a safe salad bar
Preparing pre-cooked spuds
Sauces in Seconds, including some International Sauces
Tips on seasoning your salad dressing
Purchasing, storing and browning ground beef (vs. hamburger)
Seeding a cucumber
Making a mountain of lettuce
Flattening a chicken breast for even cooking
Making French Fry Soup, (lotsa calories).

Bennett makes food and its preparation lighten up. In her chapter, 20 Tips for Eliminating Mealtime Hassles, she deals with topics such as, Making Relaxation a Priority, Keeping Everything Handy, and (very important) Asking for Help. More of Bennett's anticipation shows up in her sections on Asking for Help, Coping with Bumps in the Road, Having Fun and Sharing. This book won't necessarily get a dummie cooking, it can teach a lot of tricks to anyone hungry, dumb or not.

Bev Bennett is also author of the award-winning Two's Company. ...

With Summer coming and the kids being out of school, cries of "There is nothing to do!" will soon be heard across the land. "365 Unplugged Family Fun Activities" by Steve and Ruth Bennett comes to the rescue! This book promises a year's worth of ideas for TV-free, video-free, and computer game-free entertainment and it delivers. With this book as a guide, your kids can go on adventure treks through your house, play edible tic-tac-toe, practice cup-stacking, create a newspaper about things going on at home or in your neighborhood, paint coffee filters, or create a video cooking show, and so much more. Many of the ideas are educational and all are fun. I'm sure to use many of the ideas with my children this summer.

Why isn't this book more popular?
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-19
The purpose of this book is to argue for two claims:

1) There is no moral significance to the doing/allowing distinction.
2) The "Doctrine of Double Effect" is false.

The doing/allowing distinction and the DDE lie at the core of "common sense morality", and so Bennett's frying some pretty big fish by taking them on. His arguments are simultaneously creative and rigorous, drawing heavily on metaphysics and the philosophy of action to reach some rather startling moral conclusions. As an application of metaphysics to ethics, this book is exemplary, second in the contemporary literature only to Parfit's Reasons and Persons.

That's why it's surprising that it's only the 2,000,000-th most popular book on Amazon (as of the time of this review). If you're interested in the CENTRAL problems of normative ethics, and enjoy work that challenges our most deeply held views, put this in your shopping cart tout de suite!

A true page-turner. As I came to the end of each sentence, I was excitedly pulled by my anxious desire to know the out-come. Yet, AEE certainly isn't just a "store-bought" thriller; it is literature, each page saturated with it's own undefineable music.

Review Date: 2000-06-14
As a fellow mole-rat researcher, I found this book to be an extremely valuable resource for information on all of the Bathyergidae rodents. From phylogenetic analysis to an interspecies comparison of sociality, Bennett and Faulkes cover all of the relevant topics and provide an extensive summary of all of the relevant literature. Mole-rats are an excellent group of animals for studying mammalian social behavior and cooperative breeding. This book is a must buy for anyone interested in mole-rats or even animal social behavior for that matter.

Belief in supernatural phenomena ranging from poltergeists to telepathy remains strong and pervasive in an otherwise rational, modern, secular, science oriented world. Especially common is belief in continuing contact with (or the continuing presence of) deceased family members. Gillian Bennet interviewed women in Manchester, England, asking them questions about ghosts and other aspects of the supernatural. "Alas, Poor Ghost!" lays out her rather impressive research methodology and techniques, as well as her findings, analysis. Of special interest is supplemental material assisted by Kate Bennett, a gerontological psychologist who presents and discusses new research with a group of women in Leicester, England. "Alas, Poor Ghost!" concludes with Bennett placing her work in historical context through a discussion of case studies in the history of supernatural belief. "Alas, Poor Ghost!" will prove fascinating, informative, original reading for students of folklore, occultism, metaphysics, cultural traditions and beliefs.
