Thank you, Cowboy Poets.....ALL of you.Review Date: 2007-08-19
Please keep doing what you're doing - the Old West as it once was may be long-gone, but the tradition of the cowboy poet keeps at least a small strand of that alive and well.
Entertaining, thoughtful poetryReview Date: 2005-11-15
Comparing this book with other similar books convinced me that this is one of the better collections. Similar in tone to the 15 year old book from the same publisher, this book is real cowboy poetry with no new-age political stuff snuck in. (Yes, even in Cowboy poetry, authors occasionally try to fool the readers with political rants and vague, high-falutin' literary allusions.)
The poems are divided up in chapters on horses, ranching lifestyles, humor, family and nostalgia. Most are less than 2 pages but bursting with humor, wisdom and wistfulness for days and people gone by.
If you're new to cowboy poetry, give this collection a try.
A pure joy to readReview Date: 2005-03-27
Contained between the book's two covers are some of the most eloquent, emotional, humorous poems you'd care to read. Ranchers and cowboys (and cowgirls) write with an honesty and straightforwardness that's hard to resist.
The book is divided in six sections: Hosses, Jest fer the Fun of It, Reflections of a Lifestyle, Family & the Community of Cowboys, Lookin' Back Down the Trail, and Characters. I cried real tears over some, and laughed out loud over others. All of them sang with the sounds of the range. In some poems, I could hear hoofbeats and feel the rocking lope of a cow pony. In others, I could smell the campfire where the tall tales were told.
In searching for this book's title to write my review, I saw that there were lots of other collections of cowboy poems. This book has made me want to read more of the gems these gritty and witty folks have to offer. These poems are truly national (and international -- some of the writers wrote of Australia and other lands) treasures.
A Modern Classic CollectionReview Date: 2004-10-14
The publisher notes that the anthology was released "In honor of the 20th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering recently celebrated in Elko" and the majority of the seventy-five poems by seventy-five writers are from those who have graced the stage at Elko. Along with those mentioned above, Elko favorites Waddie Mitchell, Mike Logan, Colen Sweeten, Red Steagall, Georgie Sicking, and Chris Isaacs are included, as are Wylie Gustafson, R. W. Hampton, and Tom Russell, excellent writers better known for their music. But appearance at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering was not the basis for inclusion in this book. Quality and authenticity were the obvious overriding criteria.
This volume is a model of well chosen poetry, a satisfying survey of Cowboy Poetry as practiced by many masterful writers. Few of the poems have been anthologized previously, and the many new pieces from familiar poets offer the serious enthusiast new words and worlds to ponder. Humorous and serious pieces are gathered in chapters such as "Hosses," "Jest Fer the Fun of It," and "Family & the Community of Cowboys." There's a good representation of classic poetry and among the modern gems are Buck Ramsey's "Skysailing," Rod McQueary's "Remembering a Middle-Aged Bronc Ride," Larry McWhorter's "The Retirement of Ashtola," Darin Brookman's "Tempered Souls," Georgie Sicking's "Doctoring Worms," Linda Hasselstrom's "Priests of the Prairie," Andy Wilkinson's "We Were the Horseman," Doris Daley's "Love is Blind," Mike Logan's "Behold a Pale Horse," and Ross Knox's "Memories."
Editor Virginia Bennett's passion for poetry and the "family of poets" is as ardent as her commitment to ranching life. Her dedication comes through in the book's carefully considered selections, and her inspired introduction uncovers the beating heart of the art of Cowboy Poetry: "For cowboy poems have a life of their own. They are built with words that are spawned not only from labor, but also from an occupation with which the poet's very existence is linked. A cowboy or rancher lives where he or she works, and what they do in their work determines their survival. Therein can be found the essence of cowboy poetry and the explanation for why its popularity grows."
"Cowboy Poetry: The Reunion takes its place alongside publisher Gibbs Smith's other Cowboy Poetry standards, including: "Cowboy Poetry: A Gathering," "Cowgirl Poetry" (also edited by Virginia Bennett), "Humorous Cowboy Poetry," and "Maverick Western Verse." This latest volume goes beyond those classic offerings in the depth and breadth of its selections and surely will long stand as a definitive representation of the state of the art.

Rip Roaring Fun!Review Date: 2008-05-12
Chris the 34 year old US Mail carrier and her best friend Luce the stained glass artist. Their friends Amadeus the restaurant owner, Midge the successful pastry chef, and B. the realtor who defines the type 'A' person. And best of all The Pipster. So much good will and fun it makes you want to visit Albuquerque New Mexico on vacation.
This is a not to be missed laugh out loud book.

Many Colorful CharactersReview Date: 2008-01-04
After having little or no luck on the dating scene, four women decide to form a "date night" club. They meet regularly, planning outings in different places and hoping to meet eligible women. Close friends, they support each other in times of trouble and celebrate their successes together.
Even trying to relay a few of the details would require too much of the story to be revealed, but I don't want to spoil it for you so I won't try. Just take it from a Bennet fan and an avid reader of books in this genre - grab a copy and hold on for the ride.

Still laughing at the duct tape scene!Review Date: 2007-09-06
The club members are an eccentric mix of women who provide a great deal of heart and humor on their "quest" for love. There is Bernadette Chevez Maestas, known as B., a high-energy and highly successful realtor with a physique akin to Dolly Parton's. Sarah K. Roswell is the pastry chef/business woman behind a well known line of crème puffs available in upscale groceries. Sarah calls herself "Midge" because as a Little Person, she feels she might as well control and embrace her identity with disarming, self affirming humor. Luce is the resident bohemian-earth-mother-artist-type who works in large scale stained glass and may still be grieving her late lover. And Amadeus, a tall, blue-eyed, red-haired German Amazon, runs The Zoo, a hip restaurant that's popular with "club members."
The group makes monthly forays dubbed "date night" that include volunteering at the local pride-fest picnic and attending a book group sponsored by the local women's bookstore. In the latter scene, Alex Taylor, the author of the month's selection, is in attendance because she hopes for feedback from readers. (Her book, titled "The Heiress," bears a striking resemblance to the story line of Bennett's book, Back Talk.) Particularly amusing is the hot seat on which the author finds herself when her literary use of pickles is criticized by two very uptight feminist readers. The discussion that results is bizarre and hilarious. While no reader should assume an autobiographical origin to any novel, one can not help but wonder if Bennett is exorcising some particular experience with this wickedly funny scene. Alex Taylor's rather plaintively confused comment, "The pickle heiress was meant to be funny," (75), says it all.
Date Night Club is a very fine example of what Saxon Bennett does best: She creates a funny, charming and very human ensemble cast of lesbians, then carries her readers through an arc of challenge and growth with them. I laughed out loud several times, especially in regard to B.'s type A dominating, if well meaning, approach to orchestrating not only her own life but those of her good friends. The scene with the duct tape still gets me to smile. Dog people will love The Pipster, who makes Lassie look ill-trained, and the flyball games. Date Night Club is one of the funniest books I've read in a very long time, and is in my opinion the best of Bennett's many charming novels, in that her characters are so clearly defined and articulated from the very beginning, making the story a pleasure to follow. Give Date Night Club a try, you might not find your true love, but you're sure to enjoy the evening!

Within Cerf's anthology there are some standard such as W.W. Jacob's, "The Monkey's Paw' and Saki's "The Open Window." The reader will also find some rarer treats in August Derleth's, "The Return of Andrew Bentley' and Ambrose Bierce's, "The Damned Thing." Cerf had fantastic taste in ghost stories and assembled 15 that range from pleasent to down-right horrifying. Modern Library has allowed this wonderful classic to go out of print which denies modern readers access to the best ghost story anthology every published and makes it virtually impossible for me to replace my old yellowed copy...
Though I may be telling the reader to go find Shangra-la, find a copy if you can. I beg modern library to re-introduce this great anthology to the public. Hwlloween is always coming you know.

Move Over Stephen KingReview Date: 2005-01-30
The story makes fun of corporate america and how if someone wants to succeed, they would have to proove themselves. This guy just wants to perform his job well and is a very ambitious man. He is so ambitious that he even commits murder.
This story is a very quirky story about the insurance industry and corporate america. I would highly recommend to purchase this book and see exactly what the rave is all about.
The adjuster by Scott BobrowReview Date: 2005-01-18
It is written in a very clear way that makes you finish the story and uncover the deepest emotions of the main character.
The Adjuster by Scott BobrowReview Date: 2004-12-25
Never have I read a more real and gut wrenching story about racism, company loyalty, murder and a character that will not ever leave my mind.
Who is this writer? He has created an original, grotesqe, racist claims adjuster that commits murder, spews hate, blackmails and yet, whether we like it or not,we care for him on some level. Without a doubt this is a character and story that is so original,so disturbing and so good that I feel like marketing this story.
The Adjuster takes up half the anthology, and for good reason: it is amazing. We finally have a politically incorrect novel that should be honered for its courage and insights: it lets us know that America is still run by white males weho use racial profiles to exploit its customers and employees. If you have ever had an auto claim,or might, read this story.
But the real brillance is the writing and characters and the originality of the story. It is hysterically funny at times, and so brutal and ugly the next. Its graphic and raw,but never is it not true to its themes and message. Its an Anti Racist book;anyone denies this denies racism exists.
I could not put this down.A hunchback claims rep with a shedding skin condition and who is the most vile character I have ever read, commits blackmail, murder, extortion and yet does so for what he feels is for the integrrity of the insurance industry.
You need to read this twice to pick up the clever and subtle nuances that you miss on the first read.
The suopporting characters are amazing,as is how racially biased this industry can be.
Willard Newman is someone I feel I know,he wont go away.I have never written a review but Ive read many books. This gem is so original,so brutal,so funny and so repulsive, the publisher must be on cloud nine.
Please read this story. Hollywood take notice: Willard Newman will become a household name.
This blew me away, I have had five of my friends read this and some were disgusted, angered, apalled but were in awe of this story.
Mr Bobrow, you have done something special: you have created an original monster,an original story and I demand to know who your agent is,because if you dont have one,I will represent you.
WOW. READ THIS. AND THEN READ IT AGAIN. ITS COURAGEOUS, UGLY, and BRILLANT.
The Adjuster by Scott BobrowReview Date: 2005-01-07
in corporate america. Willard Newman has all the attributes and foul elements that the insurance industry embodies. I could definitely see Robin Williams playing this part. Willard Newman is a character I will not forget. He is etched in my mind forever. Read this book!
