Lee Harris' mysteries are always extremely well thought out and involve interesting characters and story lines. This book is no exception. It's a lot of fun following Chris as she starts with nothing and goes on to solve the murder. The way Harris accomplishes this is very credible, because Chris is so well-defined and genuine.

We have previously expressed our enjoyment of the prior dozen escapades of ex-nun Christine Bennett, an amateur sleuth, wife of a brand new (ex-cop) NYPD lawyer, and mother of young toddler Eddie. This springtime story occurs shortly after Father's Day, which witnessed the murder of one of the "Morris Avenue Boys", who had been friends since boyhood for some 40 years and regularly met for reunions all this time. Our leading lady was asked to investigate the murder of one of the nine (by one of the granddaughters), all of whom, except one out-of-towner who did not attend, nor one who had previously died, were obvious suspects and being investigated (more or less, we don't get the details...) by the police.

Despite many days of questioning the principals, the widow, the wives and anybody else who might have a shard of knowledge about the group, Chris has almost as many questions as she does answers. Yet her persistence has turned up a few leads that the police have as yet to discover. Thus a pretty good premise leads us through the life and times of the men, especially the murder victim, Arthur Wien, a famous novelist, to a fairly surprising conclusion. Wien's celebrity life, his women chasing, money borrowing, and messy divorce, fueled much of the grounds for motive, still difficult to find among the great chums. We picked up a clue mid-book that gave us an inkling of the outcome, an "eureka" not common to reading the stories in this series. Even with that precognition, we were held in suspense until nearly the final chapter when all becomes clear and Chris once again is the lever that elicits a confession from the apparently guilty party. Interestingly, whether it was really that party or not is somewhat left to the speculation of the reader.

We enjoy the very predictability of Lee Harris' stories of which we suppose some might tire. We have often characterized the leading lady and her family as wholesome and caring, creating dependably pleasant tales that don't need violence and gore, nor foul language or explicit sex, to capture and sustain our interest. Isn't that what a good mystery is all about ?!?!

This series are so well written! I am at a loss without another Chris Bennett story to follow up with. Like all the other "holiday" murders this is also a great book that keeps you hooked from the first page to the last. I finished this one in one day, I could not put it down. Keep them coming Lee!!

A group of boys living on the same block in the Bronx becomes friends, calling themselves the "Morris Ave Boys". They even wear jackets with colors to distinguish themselves from other students. Over two decades later, nine of the boys remain in touch. They hold reunions, bringing their wives to the festivities. Their next meeting is scheduled for New York on Father's Day.

Former nun and amateur detective Christine Bennett lives and teaches in the city with her police officer spouse. One of her students asks her to assist his grandfather, the prime suspect in the murder of one of his cronies, a fellow member of the "Morris Ave Boys". Christine begins to investigate and finds that she likes all the group's members and their spouses. Everyone seems nice and harmless. As she digs deeper, she begins to find flaws in their perfect behavior, concluding that one of them has ample reason to commit murder.

Lee Harris has the ability to successfully handle a large ensemble cast that leaves the audience feeling they intimately know everyone. The transition between Chris the detective and Chris the mom blend well together and actually enhance the intriguing story line. Even Ogden Nash, after perusing THE FATHER'S DAY MURDER, would say "The Bronx, thonx". Anyone who reads this novel or the other nine tales in the Bennett amateur sleuth series will feel fully entertained and anxious for the next book.

I bought this book for my husbands mother. She had a really hard time coping with the loss of our son. She felt like no one understood her and she herself could not understand some of her emotions. She would call me everyday to tell me what she had read and how similar the story was to ours. When she finished the book she seemed as if she understood now. She told me that we cant try to get over what happened but to interpret it into our lives.

Forgotten Tears: A Grandmother's
Journey Through Grief
by Nina Bennett
Booklocker.com
Genre: Autobiographical Grief Memoir
ISBN: 1591137640, $12.95, 144 pp, 2005

This book is about Nina Bennett's personal grief experience over the death of her granddaughter, Maddy Hodgdon, who died during childbirth. In this book she shares her knowledge as a healthcare professional (former childbirth educator and reproductive healthcare specialist) and she shares her inspiration as she works her way through the pain.

Nina wrote Forgotten Tears to help other grandparents with their personal grief while they try to help their bereaved child, and I think to help work through her own grief. Quoting from the back cover:

"Being a grieving grandparent means seeing your own child suffer and being powerless to help while experiencing the lack of support and understanding of your might-have-beens."

I personally don't dwell on "might-have-beens," for I see no point, except to make oneself unhappy, but who am I? Life goes on and so must we. Nina Bennett certainly makes it clear that grieving is a very personal thing with no time limits.

The author currently works in the HIV/AIDS field, where she has been employed since the beginning of the epidemic. She lectures and presents workshops, both locally and nationally, on the psychological aspects of living with HIV.

Nina Bennett is a social services and healthcare professional who turned her deepest grief into something that helps others who have gone through or are going through the loss of a loved one. She wrote this book because she couldn't find many resources that focused on bereaved grandparents. She wanted to create something to help other grandparents who experience the devastating loss that she went through. This book has much to offer not only to grandparents, but also to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. It takes a brave and special person to be able to share something so deeply painful and personal with the public. And by doing so, Ms. Bennett memorialized her beloved granddaughter forever. This book is highly recommended.

Nina Bennett's book, Forgotten Tears, starts with her granddaughter Maddy's unexpected still birth. From this painful experience, she ultimately offers a sensitive and inclusive book on the subject of personal grief. She highlights a topic not often discussed: How grandparents' grief over the death of a grandchild is indeed sometimes forgotten, even though their grief is arduous.

The author artfully shares her struggle with grief until a sense of renewal reigns. Bennett is passionate about giving her grief meaningfulness to herself as well as helping others find their path alng the grief journey.

Included are individual stories, and suggestions to permit grief to forge character through redefining normal. Anyone experiencing loss of a loved one will benefit from this foundational book on grief. Excellent bibliography and resource section.

Written by a bereaved grandmother who is also a healthcare professional (former childbirth educator and reproductive healthcare specialist, now working in the HIV/AIDS field), this is an intimate portrayal of her own grief journey following the unexpected stillbirth of her beloved granddaughter. The author manages to weave theoretical material about grief and mourning in and amongst her very private journal entries and personal experiences, which makes this work valuable not only to mothers and grandmothers but to mental health professionals as well. The book is clinically accurate and current, incorporating material from leading experts on bereavement as well as anecdotal experiences gathered from other bereaved grandparents, so that it will appeal to clinicians as well as members of the lay public. I especially appreciate how, through her own touching examples, this author gives bereaved families permission to keep the memory of their babies alive and to continue to develop a connection with them through the years. As Lorraine Hedtke so accurately observes (...), sadness is only one aspect of the complexity of grief, and remembering is what helps us manage our sorrow more effectively. I have listed this book on the pages of my Grief Healing Web site (...) as one I highly recommend to my site visitors, clients and colleagues.

I've been an entrepreneur for as long as I can remember and I try to read every book on franchising and small business that I can get my hands on. Julie Bennett and Franchise Times deliver a very realistic and well-balanced view of franchising through the actual experiences of franchisees and other franchise experts. For anyone who is considering investing in a franchise business, this book is a must read. The Franchise Times Guide to Selecting, Buying and Owning a Franchise is simply the best book on franchising that I have ever read!

One American dream is to own a franchise--hey, it's business in a box, just add cash (sometimes LOTS of cash) and walk in, a business owner. While it is true small business owners generally make a lot more money than salaried folk, it is also true that many many new businesses, including franchises, fail every day. This is NOT a trouble-free easy path to your dreams. You have to plan, think and investigate.

The author covers not only what franchises are available (types of restaurants, travel, construction, hotels, retail) but also covers if your personality is the TYPE to succeed. Then location and competition is discussed, franchise advertising surcharges, viability and doing due diligence. Trouble with the franchise company, including litigation is also discussed, as well as running a test model before plunging finally into the business. There is a fascinating chapter on why minorities are under-represented in franchise ownership.

While this is not everything you need to know or do to start a franchise operation, it is a very good (and 400 page) start to thinking on what you need to go about this venture. You can take this book, plus hire a CPA who is expert in small business to go over your figures and point out things you've missed. If your very own franchise is in your future, this is a good place to start.

A nice book on franchising created by the people at Franchise Times magazine. It just needed a chapter on franchise biz plans!

I liked this book very much. It is basically a marketing piece for Franchise Times magazine. It is written by a contributing writer to the magazine. And the book's forward is written by the founder of the magazine. The book is well written and very well organized. It is split into five sections and 18 chapters:

§1. Getting started: Finding the right franchise for you (1-7)
§2. The nuts & bolts: Investigating and buying a franchise (8-12)
§3. Getting ready for business: How to hit the ground running (13-15)
§4. Franchising today and tomorrow (16-18)
§5. Franchise directory

1. Who are today's franchisees?
2. Are you meant to be a franchisee?
3. Beyond burgers: Consumer-oriented franchisers
4. Service-oriented franchises: Everything from cars to computers
5. Finding your perfect franchise fit
6. Beginning your franchise search
7. You're interested. Now what?
8. The Uniform Franchise Offering Circular: Not exactly beach reading
9. Checking out your franchise of choice
10. Discovery day or the time I almost bought a sub shop
11. Franchise attorneys: Pay now or pay more later
12. Franchising your franchise
13. Franchise training
14. Finding a home for your new enterprise
15. Getting your franchise up and running
16. Trouble in paradise: Keeping the peace with your franchise
17. The diverse faces of franchising
18. The roles you can play in franchising's future

Let me say here that I am not a fan of franchising. As a practicing attorney I had a few clients who were franchisees and they did not have positive experiences in that capacity. Franchise agreements usually place too many restrictions on a small business owner and limit the company's growth potential. Sometimes those agreements also force a business to go under. And then there are the situations where franchisors allow other franchisees to set up shop too close to an existing franchisee and sales suffer for both franchisees.

Some people look to franchising in order to have a ready-made business plan and distribution system waiting for them as they start down the entrepreneurial path. Others seek a franchise so they will have a ready made customer-base because of the brand the franchisor has created. Some franchises deliver all three: business plan, distribution system, and customers. This last type typically cost a fortune to buy into, and they are the kind that come closest to buying a business. Unfortunately by buying into a franchise there are so many strings attached. By buying a business (instead of a franchise) you are free to grow the business as you see fit. You can even franchise it as a franchisor.

Yesterday I read a few books on franchising in order to get a feel for how good this book is. One of the other books I liked and reviewed: "BBB's Insider Guide to Buying a Franchise" (ISBN: 1933895012). I gave it a positive review rating, but I complained that it lacked sufficient meat on the bones to warrant the highest rating. I like the instant book in a similar way. But in my humble opinion, this book has the meat on the bones to warrant the 5-star rating.

I would have liked this book better if it had included Chapter 18 from the BBB book mentioned herein above. Athough a franchise comes with a proven business model and something called a business plan for start-up purposes, every franchisee must prepare their own business plan for their franchise. That will involve scoping out the local competition and seeing how they market their product or services. The competition's customers are something that every franchisee must become expert about because the franchisee is going to work at stealing some (or all) of those customers. Without customizing the business plan for a franchise so it will fit into a local market and new location, the franchisee is at serious risk of failure. 5 stars!

We used this book in our diesel technician class. The book gives you an excellent introduction to every aspect of a heavy-duty truck. I usually shy away from books written by more than one author because of lack of continuity or overcoverage in certain areas. In the case of this book, the authors have done a fantasic job of explaining the topics without any assumptions. The book does a good job in covering cluthes, standard transmission, torque converters, drive shafts, axles, and automatic transmissions. On the subject of brakes, I recommend Delmar's "Today's Technician: Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Brakes." If your thinking of buying a book on this subject matter, you can't go wrong with this selection. Be aware that a third edition has been released.

Grace, sixteen-years-old, lives within the tyranny of her emotions, mind, and environment. She develops a severe depression after the death of her father, which later blooms into Schizoaffective Disorder from outer sources. She also carries a deep fear of the 'Surely People', a group of hoodlums who cluster in her neighborhood that are cruel, degrading and evil. Finally, it also defines the bond between her and Luke, an antisocial patient labled as psychopathic. Together, they struggle through trying to release themselves from their internal hell, while also realizing that although they are hospitalized, they are as normal as the outside world.

High-strung, remarkable, engrossing and tender, "I Can Hear the Mourning Dove" reflects the true self barricaded within every person. It is a bipolar item, for many of its subjects are abstract and powerful. It clearly pulls you into the suffering of the main character from the first sentence, and never lets go, even after it has been read through. It is my favorite novel, and will always be remembered.

I Can Hear The Mourning Doves is one of the books that you start reading and you just can't put down until you have finished reading it. It is the story of a young girl who struggles to survive after her recent suicide attempt. Grace is put in the mental hospital, where she meets a boy named Luke. Luke is the type of person Grace fears. Luke is dangerous, rough, and he has no respect for anyone or anything. However, he is the only one who is able to connect with Grace, and he is the only one who can help her. I highly recommend this book.

'The book is upbeat, reading like the medical equivalent of a sermon from the Crystal Cathedral. The style is entertaining, friendly and motivating; so it's easy to read and reread. To follow The Program is to change one's lifestyle, not just one's diet. It is indeed, 'specific and comprehensive'. Not every reader will be able to adopt the upbeat life view which underlies it, but every reader will become more conscious of destructive things in his life which he should try to eliminate, and most of all learn a number of techniques for managing stress.
There is a good deal of well presented medical information in the book. Any patient with hypertension would profit by reading it. Some will be converted and 'go for it 100%'.'

It's filled with useful data that can be helpful in writing letters to newspapers and in debating for animal protection/rights. Bennett writes in a Gandhi-like style -- never angry or agressive. But the facts she gives us are powerful. Example: Rodeos -- "C. G. Haber, a veterinarian who worked 30 years as a meat inspector in slaughterhouses, saw scores of animals discarded from rodeos and sent to slaughter. Toughened as he was to animal suffering, the condition of the rodeos' animals sickened him. He described them as 'so extensively bruised that the only areas in which the skin was attached to the flesh were the head, neck, legs, and belly.' 'I've seen animals, he said, 'with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and at times puncturing the lungs. I've seen as much as two to three gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin.'" (This should convince even the most calloused rodeo fan that rodeos ARE inhumane).

Bennett has facts and data EVERYONE can use. There's info on where to stay when travelling with your pets, charities that aren't charitable to animals, how students can refuse to dissect animals in school, what to do about unwelcome wildlife "guests" in your home, and so much more. I could go on and on. I can't say enough good about this book. This one is terrific!

This is NOT the last book in the PAGEANT series. There'll be another book: THE WINNERS ON THE ROAD, which will be published in February of 1999 (I know, 2 more months). Hopefully, this book will tell what Pepper, Christy, Sierra, and the other girls who have secrets do, as well as Katie and Dean's relationship, and Katie and Lisa, the winner and runner-up, traveling across the country. The book gifs an good overall view to the beginning, or more experienced doctor (or layman) in the physiology and pathophysiology of hyperbaric medicine. The book is rather complete and easy to read, it reads more as a novel than a scientific book. I use it as standard book for many questions in the field of diving or hyperbaric medicine. Besides this it gives a view at the treatment of diving disorders.

Definitive technical text

This book is probably the standard work in the field of diving physiology. The contributers are the leaders in the field and this well referenced and thought out book is certainly a must for people who are involved in diving research and development.

The reason for only 4 out of 5 is that the book is probably too technical for the average person you need a reasonably good background in both physiology and hyperbaric medicine to get a true benefit from this book.

Otherwise a seminal text in the field

This is an in depth treatment of the physiology of diving. We use it as a reference at the UCLA Gonda Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine where we operate two large recompression chambers. The style is readable and useful, but I believe that interest in it will be limited to physicians, physiologists, and kinesiologists. For those interested in a less in-depth treatment consider the excellent U.S. Navy Diving Manual available on CD-ROM.
Another text more heavily weighted towards medicine is Diving Medicine by Bove. All three of these texts grace are shelves and are referred to regularly.
If the price puts you off, try lurking until a used one comes up.

Learning From the Past from a Pro- as we try to save Medicare

As we enter another Presidential Political campaign, where the issues of saving Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will be hotly debated, this is an important book that documents the history of the Medicare program from the 1930's to the ultimate passage of the program in 1965. Professor Marmor is uniquely qualified to bring life to the events. It should be read by all who will want to understand how we "got where we are", and perhaps give insight to ways to make these important social programs more vibrant in the 21 st century

One of a Kind

Have you ever wondered how Medicare-the federal health insurance program for the elderly and some disabled--became such a hot news topic, or why its administration and benefit package (the lack of outpatient drug coverage, for example) seems so inexplicable and byzantine?

If so, Theodore Marmor's reissue and revision of The Politics of Medicare is the book you want to pick up. There is no comparable book of its kind. Other scholars have studied Medicare's origins. Journalists trace the ebb and flow of contemporary Washington battles over Social Security and Medicare. But Marmor, a Yale professor and health policy guru, has written the definitive analysis of how the political battles waged over health insurance and Medicare from the 1940s onward powerfully shape the debate over the program to this day.

Wondering why Medicare, unlike almost all major private insurance plans, fails to cover most prescription drugs? The seeds of an answer may be found in the fears of 1960s legislators that the unpredictable cost of drugs could swamp the program at its outset. Unsure why medical expenditures took off in the 1960s and 1970s? Partly because doctors, who had led the charge against a government-sponsored social insurance program for the aged, benefited enormously from generous rules that were designed to assauge their fears about participation. Puzzled how Medicare became such a political hot potato after years of uninterrupted popularity? Marmor deftly shows how the Reagan administration reoriented widely-held fears about medical inflation into narrower fears about the supposedly unsustainable cost of public programs.

Another reason that this astute volume bears reading, or rereading: Marmor shows that elections can really matter. In the absence of the Democratic majority in Congress that emerged from the 1964 elections, passage of Medicare would have been delayed or forestalled altogether.

Within the cozy world of health policy analysts, Marmor is known for being a staunch proponent of national health insurance and a skeptic about the potential of HMOs and different forms of "managed competition" to control health costs and delivery quality care. His convictions enliven the text rather than detracting from its rigorous logic. This is a book that anyone interested in the politics of health care, and in American politics in general, will appreciate.

One thing alone mars this otherwise impressive book: its packaging. Sadly, any seven-year old with access to Microsoft Excel could have improved on the volume's rudimentary and unappealing charts and graphics. But the reader shouldn't let this superficial flaw detract from Marmor's important and unusually well-written book.

Master Political Scientist Provides Timely Update

The first edition of The Politics of Medicare, reprinted in part for the second edition, provides an engaging analytical structure for understanding the complex forces of governments and politics. While studying under the author, a gifted political scientist, years ago, the first edition was a cornerstone in our studies of healthcare politics and programs in the United States. The book equips the reader with the tools and knowledge to understand political forces well beyond the Medicare program.

The analysis of Medicare in the 1990s, found in the current volume, is excellent. This is an ideal time to read or reread the book since Medicare program changes will face our new President and the newly elected or reelected members of our House of Representatives and Senate during 2001. This fall I read the second edition and found the book very informative and enjoyable.

A Valuable Update to a Public Policy Classic

Revised for the first time since 1973, Marmor's *The Politics of Medicare* still stands as the best single book on the political genesis of Medicare. In this valuable new edition, Marmor brings his classic analysis up to date while addressing the arguments of contemporary critics of the program. During an election year in which Medicare looms large, there is no better guide to the political past and future of America's public health insurance program for the elderly and disabled.

I have read two reviews of this book in odd places, both of which are highly favorable. According to John Glasel of the Musician's Union in NYC, Professor Marmor's 'perceptive work analyzes the partisan squabbling that hs shaped Medicare over the years. The first part, a reprint of the first edition of this book, traces the history of the fight for government health insurance from the 1930s to the passage of Medicare in l965. The book's second part, completely new in this edition, brings the history up to date. Many scholars, according to Glasel, have long considered the first edition of this book the "definitive work on the subject. Its new edition should now be accorded that distinction." I agree with that judgement very much. So does Jeff Levine of WebMD's Washington Bureau, who described The Politics of Medicare as "a book for serious students of public policy," one which does not simply recite "historical facts" but analyzes the origins of Medicare and then, in a complex and thoughtful way, tells the story from l965 to l999.
