We used this book in our diesel technician class. The book gives you an excellent introduction to every aspect of a heavy-duty truck. I usually shy away from books written by more than one author because of lack of continuity or overcoverage in certain areas. In the case of this book, the authors have done a fantasic job of explaining the topics without any assumptions. The book does a good job in covering cluthes, standard transmission, torque converters, drive shafts, axles, and automatic transmissions. On the subject of brakes, I recommend Delmar's "Today's Technician: Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Brakes." If your thinking of buying a book on this subject matter, you can't go wrong with this selection. Be aware that a third edition has been released.

This is one of my favorite books,my dad bought it for me. Though my mom can't figure out why I like so much to her even thought she never read the book it sounds terribly depresing. But it's not at all it's very uplifiting and funny. Well diveloped charictores, the ending of the storie is happy, well about as happy as it can get without sounding like a fairy tale. It's funny that my dad picked the book up for me and that I liked it but when I pick books I end up hating them.

I would highly suggest this book to anyone. It is one of those that you can't put down. you are drawn into Grace's life and problems from the first sentence.

Unveiling the torture within the soul of an adolescent girl.

Review Date: 2001-09-26
Grace, sixteen-years-old, lives within the tyranny of her emotions, mind, and environment. She develops a severe depression after the death of her father, which later blooms into Schizoaffective Disorder from outer sources. She also carries a deep fear of the 'Surely People', a group of hoodlums who cluster in her neighborhood that are cruel, degrading and evil. Finally, it also defines the bond between her and Luke, an antisocial patient labled as psychopathic. Together, they struggle through trying to release themselves from their internal hell, while also realizing that although they are hospitalized, they are as normal as the outside world.

High-strung, remarkable, engrossing and tender, "I Can Hear the Mourning Dove" reflects the true self barricaded within every person. It is a bipolar item, for many of its subjects are abstract and powerful. It clearly pulls you into the suffering of the main character from the first sentence, and never lets go, even after it has been read through. It is my favorite novel, and will always be remembered.

I Can Hear The Mourning Doves is one of the books that you start reading and you just can't put down until you have finished reading it. It is the story of a young girl who struggles to survive after her recent suicide attempt. Grace is put in the mental hospital, where she meets a boy named Luke. Luke is the type of person Grace fears. Luke is dangerous, rough, and he has no respect for anyone or anything. However, he is the only one who is able to connect with Grace, and he is the only one who can help her. I highly recommend this book.

This inspiring book has changed many lives, and has helped many others that are suffering from chronic conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, etc. and I'm pretty sure it will help us understand that prevention, healthy eating, stress management and daily exercise, is as important as breathing, because through the 12 week program and it's many techniques we will be empowered to change and enable our body to heal it self without the need of those costly medications.

this book can be an inspiration to all of us

'The book is upbeat, reading like the medical equivalent of a sermon from the Crystal Cathedral. The style is entertaining, friendly and motivating; so it's easy to read and reread. To follow The Program is to change one's lifestyle, not just one's diet. It is indeed, 'specific and comprehensive'. Not every reader will be able to adopt the upbeat life view which underlies it, but every reader will become more conscious of destructive things in his life which he should try to eliminate, and most of all learn a number of techniques for managing stress.
There is a good deal of well presented medical information in the book. Any patient with hypertension would profit by reading it. Some will be converted and 'go for it 100%'.'

Heard about it from a co-worker, sent it to my mother in the Philippines (where everybody has high blood pressure)and also prayed for her. Last week she called and said her pressure was down and her doctor had stopped some of her pills. She has told my aunt about it too. I am a nurse and I see a lot of people with strokes and heart problems. If this book can help my family I am all for it. Looks good so far. Will get back to you in a few months.

This book explores the relationship that people have with animals, both their pets and the creatures of the wild. The collection of stories contained in it underscores the intelligence and sensitivity of the animals that share the planet with us. It gives great advice on how to help animals and what to do in many situations involving animal rescue, pet care, ect. It is very well-written and enjoyable to read, full of humor and sincerity. I highly recommend it to any animal lover.

You'll find practical ideas about how you can help in ways that don't require a lot of time or money. No matter where you live, you can help animals in so many ways.

There are so many things to love about this fact-filled animal companion's guide! As a mother, teacher and lifetime animal lover, I feel Bennett's "Living in Harmony With Animals" is a goldmine of indispensible information relating to the comfort and well-being of all creatures great and small. Bennett covers the gamut, from making your yard animal-friendly to keeping animal rights issues alive in the media.

It's also entertaining to read about my favorite celebrities and how actively involved they are in protecting our four-legged friends! Many of these big names share heartwarming, personal experiences with us, as well as adorable photos from their private albums.

This book is an absolute "must-have" for anyone having a special place in their heart for animals!

I find Carla Bennett's "Living in Harmony with Animals" very inspirational and helpful. It speaks from the heart and will reach many hearts too as it did mine! It's the perfect book to give a friend who loves animals but often doesn't know where to turn for answers on many issues concerning them. It's right there in that book! I also like the various pictures of Animal Rights' activists, the vegetarian recipes and also the international resources available to help animals,in the last pages of the book. Bennett's book becomes my secret weapon to continue my Animal Rights activism. Claudine Erlandson Seattle, WA

A "Must Have" for Every Activist and Animal Lover

Review Date: 2000-05-11
I've been an animal rights activist more than ten years and a former intern for a wildlife rehabilitation center. Yet, I learned more from this little book than I ever thought possible. It's filled with useful data that can be helpful in writing letters to newspapers and in debating for animal protection/rights. Bennett writes in a Gandhi-like style -- never angry or agressive. But the facts she gives us are powerful. Example: Rodeos -- "C. G. Haber, a veterinarian who worked 30 years as a meat inspector in slaughterhouses, saw scores of animals discarded from rodeos and sent to slaughter. Toughened as he was to animal suffering, the condition of the rodeos' animals sickened him. He described them as 'so extensively bruised that the only areas in which the skin was attached to the flesh were the head, neck, legs, and belly.' 'I've seen animals, he said, 'with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and at times puncturing the lungs. I've seen as much as two to three gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin.'" (This should convince even the most calloused rodeo fan that rodeos ARE inhumane).

Bennett has facts and data EVERYONE can use. There's info on where to stay when travelling with your pets, charities that aren't charitable to animals, how students can refuse to dissect animals in school, what to do about unwelcome wildlife "guests" in your home, and so much more. I could go on and on. I can't say enough good about this book. This one is terrific!

This is a great book. My almost 5 year old son keeps asking for it over and over again. Unlike most "real science" books, it has both scientific explanations for things like gravity and the phases of the moon, but also tells a narrative fictional story. As a parent, it's very helpful to have all the answers right there on the same page when your child asks, what is gravity? We can't wait for the next Max book.

I recently finished reading 'My Father's voice', the biography of Lorne Greene written by his daughter Linda Greene Bennett. If you are a Lorne Greene fan this book is an absolute MUST for you. I thought I knew quite a lot about this man but discovered I hadn't even scratched the surface! I just wish I had had the opportunity to meet him. Linda obviously loved her father dearly and this comes across in the book. I laughed and I cried but loved it totally.
Even if you are not a particular fan of Mr. Greene it is still worth reading about this hard-working, intelligent, humorous, wonderful person, and WHAT a life he had!!

The Broadway hit A Chorus Line is returning to Times Square in a major revival this fall - and ON THE LINE: THE CREATION OF 'A CHORUS LINE' provides an oral history from the nineteen original cast members who recall how they become involved with the project, how it evolved from workshops, and how it made many of them lasting successes in their fields. Robert Viagas collaborated with original cast members Baayork Lee and Thommie Walsh to provide this memoir, which is a 'must' for any prior or present fans of the Broadway musical production. Many insider's views here can't be found elsewhere.

Go See the Play, but Read This First

Broadway is always exciting. It's constantly in a state of change with dozens of new shows every year. But it's only once in a while that a supershow comes about, and 'A Chorus Line' was one of those. It was the 'Phantom of the Opera,' the 'Rent,' the 'Wicked' of its day. And it's back. Go see it, but you go to the show, read this book.

This book, originally published in 1990 is about the creation of the show, the actors, the people who put it on, and a bit about why the show was such a tremendous success. The book was expanded and updated for publication in 2006 to reflect what has happened to the people and the show since.

The theme of the show is on a bare stage where casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete. The field's been narrowed down to just 17 dancers. For these men and women, this audition is the chance of a lifetime. It's what they've worked for -- with every drop of sweat, every hour of training, every day of their lives. It's the one opportunity to do what they've always dreamed of. Not to be the star, but to get the job ... to have the chance to dance and come through.

The show illustrates getting onto Broadway in a better way than I can say. This is how it is, except the book is better, as one of the actors says, he looked around the theater and finally realized that he had accomplished what he had worked for so many years to accomplish.

A must for any fan of the show (or Broadway in general)

The biggest Broadway hit is coming back this Fall, and the book that tells the story of how it was created back in the mid 70s has come back for a revival as well.

The bulk of the book has stayed the same including the black and white photos. It is a collective oral history of the nineteen original cast members of how they got involved with the project, how they labored through the months of workshops that shaped it, and what its success has meant for their lives and careers. The new edition includes an update on the cast and what they have been doing for the past 16 years.

This is a must have for any fan of A Chorus Line.

This book is a MUST for any "A Chorus Line" enthusiast.

Viagas, Lee and Walsh, together with the rest of the original cast have made an insightful book which documents the life of this great musical. Filled with remembrances by the cast and with a good collection of photographs by several photographers their book is a treasure chest of facts and memories of Broadway's "Singular Sensation". It is nice to know that author Baayork Lee continues her association with the show after twenty five years, still directing companies of the show and now opening up a website dedicated to the show... I only hope that some day they will provide an updated version concluding with the gala final performance.

This is an in depth treatment of the physiology of diving. We use it as a reference at the UCLA Gonda Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine where we operate two large recompression chambers. The style is readable and useful, but I believe that interest in it will be limited to physicians, physiologists, and kinesiologists. For those interested in a less in-depth treatment consider the excellent U.S. Navy Diving Manual available on CD-ROM.
Another text more heavily weighted towards medicine is Diving Medicine by Bove. All three of these texts grace are shelves and are referred to regularly.
If the price puts you off, try lurking until a used one comes up.

This book is probably the standard work in the field of diving physiology. The contributers are the leaders in the field and this well referenced and thought out book is certainly a must for people who are involved in diving research and development.

The reason for only 4 out of 5 is that the book is probably too technical for the average person you need a reasonably good background in both physiology and hyperbaric medicine to get a true benefit from this book.

Otherwise a seminal text in the field

As we enter another Presidential Political campaign, where the issues of saving Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will be hotly debated, this is an important book that documents the history of the Medicare program from the 1930's to the ultimate passage of the program in 1965. Professor Marmor is uniquely qualified to bring life to the events. It should be read by all who will want to understand how we "got where we are", and perhaps give insight to ways to make these important social programs more vibrant in the 21 st century

Have you ever wondered how Medicare-the federal health insurance program for the elderly and some disabled--became such a hot news topic, or why its administration and benefit package (the lack of outpatient drug coverage, for example) seems so inexplicable and byzantine?

If so, Theodore Marmor's reissue and revision of The Politics of Medicare is the book you want to pick up. There is no comparable book of its kind. Other scholars have studied Medicare's origins. Journalists trace the ebb and flow of contemporary Washington battles over Social Security and Medicare. But Marmor, a Yale professor and health policy guru, has written the definitive analysis of how the political battles waged over health insurance and Medicare from the 1940s onward powerfully shape the debate over the program to this day.

Wondering why Medicare, unlike almost all major private insurance plans, fails to cover most prescription drugs? The seeds of an answer may be found in the fears of 1960s legislators that the unpredictable cost of drugs could swamp the program at its outset. Unsure why medical expenditures took off in the 1960s and 1970s? Partly because doctors, who had led the charge against a government-sponsored social insurance program for the aged, benefited enormously from generous rules that were designed to assauge their fears about participation. Puzzled how Medicare became such a political hot potato after years of uninterrupted popularity? Marmor deftly shows how the Reagan administration reoriented widely-held fears about medical inflation into narrower fears about the supposedly unsustainable cost of public programs.

Another reason that this astute volume bears reading, or rereading: Marmor shows that elections can really matter. In the absence of the Democratic majority in Congress that emerged from the 1964 elections, passage of Medicare would have been delayed or forestalled altogether.

Within the cozy world of health policy analysts, Marmor is known for being a staunch proponent of national health insurance and a skeptic about the potential of HMOs and different forms of "managed competition" to control health costs and delivery quality care. His convictions enliven the text rather than detracting from its rigorous logic. This is a book that anyone interested in the politics of health care, and in American politics in general, will appreciate.

One thing alone mars this otherwise impressive book: its packaging. Sadly, any seven-year old with access to Microsoft Excel could have improved on the volume's rudimentary and unappealing charts and graphics. But the reader shouldn't let this superficial flaw detract from Marmor's important and unusually well-written book.

Master Political Scientist Provides Timely Update

The first edition of The Politics of Medicare, reprinted in part for the second edition, provides an engaging analytical structure for understanding the complex forces of governments and politics. While studying under the author, a gifted political scientist, years ago, the first edition was a cornerstone in our studies of healthcare politics and programs in the United States. The book equips the reader with the tools and knowledge to understand political forces well beyond the Medicare program.

The analysis of Medicare in the 1990s, found in the current volume, is excellent. This is an ideal time to read or reread the book since Medicare program changes will face our new President and the newly elected or reelected members of our House of Representatives and Senate during 2001. This fall I read the second edition and found the book very informative and enjoyable.

A Valuable Update to a Public Policy Classic

Revised for the first time since 1973, Marmor's *The Politics of Medicare* still stands as the best single book on the political genesis of Medicare. In this valuable new edition, Marmor brings his classic analysis up to date while addressing the arguments of contemporary critics of the program. During an election year in which Medicare looms large, there is no better guide to the political past and future of America's public health insurance program for the elderly and disabled.

The (revised) Politics of Medicare: reviews

I have read two reviews of this book in odd places, both of which are highly favorable. According to John Glasel of the Musician's Union in NYC, Professor Marmor's 'perceptive work analyzes the partisan squabbling that hs shaped Medicare over the years. The first part, a reprint of the first edition of this book, traces the history of the fight for government health insurance from the 1930s to the passage of Medicare in l965. The book's second part, completely new in this edition, brings the history up to date. Many scholars, according to Glasel, have long considered the first edition of this book the "definitive work on the subject. Its new edition should now be accorded that distinction." I agree with that judgement very much. So does Jeff Levine of WebMD's Washington Bureau, who described The Politics of Medicare as "a book for serious students of public policy," one which does not simply recite "historical facts" but analyzes the origins of Medicare and then, in a complex and thoughtful way, tells the story from l965 to l999.
