Makes you want to be a better preacher

R. Kent Hughes has faithfully heralded the Scriptures for over four decades. As a result, fifteen of Hughes' friends and colleagues from across the globe, including J.I. Packer, Wayne Grudem, John MacArthur, Peter Jensen and D.A. Carson, got together and contributed essays on expository preaching to honor the Word of God and encourage men to continue to faithfully herald the text, week in and week out. As a pastor, I am very thankful for Preach the Word. <br /> <br />The contributors hit on a myriad of themes and topics. This becomes a strength and a weakness of the book. It is a strength because of the diversity of topics covered and a weakness in the sense that there is sometimes a lack of development or continuity. <br /> <br />Some of the chapters and themes include, interprative principles, biblical and historcal paradigms, comtemporary aims and challenges to expository preaching, the priority of training (both through the local church and through seminaries). <br /> <br />Some of my favorite essays were D.A. Carson's chapter on challenges for the 21st Century Pulpit. It is what we have come to expect from Carson, biblical, practical and motivating. In addition, Leland Ryken's essay on the Bible as Literature made me think and has caused me to be more careful in my handling of the various genres. MacArthur's chapter entitled, "Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth" was outstanding. It was very practical and therefore helpful. <br /> <br />The essay's also reached back to the past to highlight faithful men who have been heralding long before our day. Wallace Benn highlighted the ministry of Richard Baxter and J.I. Packer used Charles Simeon as a model for preaching. <br /> <br />Overall this is a flat out encouraging book for preachers or those who enjoy preaching. Subtly plotted

It is difficult to review this novel without giving its plot away. In the first part, set in 1970, we have a good picture of Tom, a quietly charismatic but somewhat unworldly left-wing academic; of a family living in a house with lots of admirers dropping in all the time, and of what his eleven/twelve year old daughter Sarah makes of it all (though her vocabulary seemed to me to belong to someone rather older). That part is told by Sarah in the first person. The relationships within that family - Tom, his second wife Rachel, Sarah the daughter of his first marriage, and her half-siblings Kate and Jack - are subtly described, both then and later. <br /> <br />In that year 1970 a young woman, Karen, works briefly for Tom, and becomes very important for Sarah. Then Karen suddenly leaves. <br /> <br />The rest of the book is a third person narrative of what happened to Sarah and Karen in the fourteen years that follow. In that time both women have developed into something damaged; both felt somehow as outsiders. For both, the events of 1970 had left painful memories. <br /> <br />In that time things have also happened to Tom - partly as the result of what had happened in 1970, and partly because his brand of Labour was regarded as old-fashioned by the younger generation who were adapting themselves to the exigencies of Thatcherism. <br /> <br />Given that I must not reveal the plot, this is a woefully inadequate review of a complex novel. I don't myself agree with one reviewer quoted on the back, who describes its language as `stunning': I found it in a few places a little obscure; but the ambivalence at the very end - back in the first person - is perfectly judged. Plenty of Information!

Miss Kenyon's work is one of the most comprehensive ever developed. She produced much in the way of information about sites in the Holy Land some of which she positively indentified as some of the oldest of historical stories. Her work is used as a basis for much of modern archaeology as she was the first to develop a scientific approach to archaeology. Great pictures and good information. Head in the Clouds

George S. Kaufman & Marc Connelly teamed up to write this play that was first presented in New York in 1924. It is an adaptation of a 1911 German play by Paul Apel whose translated title is "Johnny Sunstormer's Trip to Hell." Kaufman & Connelly thoroughly Americanized the piece. It is an example of expressionism, where the character's inner life is reflected in decidedly non-realistic stage terms. <br /> <br />Neil McRae is a struggling composer who has caught the eye of Cynthia Mason who lives across the hall. She helps tether Neil's feet to the ground regarding appointments and the necessity to complete work. Neil's head is in the clouds, dreaming of the symphony he seems to not find time to write. A buddy of Neil's from his hometown of Livingston, Dr. Albert Rice, drops in for a visit. This happens just as a family from their hometown also drops in for a visit. Mr. & Mrs. Cady come with their son Homer and their daughter Gladys. Mr. Cady is a wealthy but grumpy entrepreneur. Homer is also a businessman who seems tied to the phone making business calls while Gladys is a debutante socialite concerned with the color of her dresses. Gladys for some unknown reason has a crush on Neil and pursues him. His buddy Albert who sees Neil wasting his time giving lessons rather than writing encourages him to marry Gladys as a way to help him out of his money woes. Although Neil has an eye for Cynthia across the hall, she also sees how he'd be more able to write his music if he marries into the wealthy family. After the Cady's leave, Cynthia rejects Neil for his own good, although she deeply cares for him. This causes Neil to pick up the phone and propose to Gladys who gushes that she can now start telling all her friends and planning engagement parties. Dr. Albert, seeing that Neil is near exhaustion, orders him to bed. Neil falls asleep thus starting the main part of the play, which is an extended expressionistic dream sequence. <br /> <br />In the dream, locations fade from one to another where Mr. Cady makes Neil join the family business. Everytime Neil wants to work on writing music, there is always another party to which Gladys drags him. Frustrated and increasingly unhappy, Neil is finally put in an art manufacturing company where songwriters turn out nice jazz tunes that will sell a million and a half. Ideas come from the inspiration department and are forwarded to the composer who dashes off the tune. Writers turn out books that copy much of the plot from their previous book to meet publishing deadlines that results in books being distributed 45 minutes after they are written. Neil's agony increases to the point where he picks up a paper knife and kills Mr. & Mrs. Cady, his wife Gladys and his brother-in-law Homer. This starts an epic trial where tickets for jurors are sold like movie theatre tickets and the jurors are dancing instructors who dance with Gladys. The judge is none other than the dead Mr. Cady and the deceased Mrs. Cady comes back as a witness. Albert becomes the prosecuting attorney and objections are made to Neil's looks. The jury does not care for Neil's looks and convicts him. This ends the dream. <br /> <br />Gladys shows up to inquire if they could postpone their engagement because she's run into one of her old boyfriends who wants to show her the city; and of course, he wouldn't be comfortable doing so if she's engaged. Neil and Gladys decide they are not meant for each other which allows Neil to set his sights back on Cynthia who has now returned and is willing to settle for a life that is less successful but is filled with love. <br /> <br />It is an interesting play, one that would require a legion of stagehands and set designers to produce effectively. It is an indictment of business vs. art, something with which both Kaufman & Connelly seem extremely knowledgeable. I couldn't quite figure out what the title had to do with the play, but I did appreciate reading this great example of American expressionism. Entertaining

The Black Knight is genre-perfect. It was written in the early twenties and is a definitive example of the flapper romance. The main character is saucy and untameble, she refuses to bow to the conventions that govern her dull, well-to-do environment. The story follows the transformation of her ideals and her growth into her own happiness. The dialogue is, in my opinion, one of the most delightful aspects of the book. Necessary Reference

<<Why this old book is reprinted? Plates are monochrome. Some are blurred. Nowadays, we can use books with beautiful colorful plates.>><p>Someone should claim this question, but THIS 2 volumes are worthy.<p>Many classical papers and books refer to this books as the trivial standard reference book about chinese Buddhist sculptures. Study progress on classical works, but, students irritate for lack of this reference book, especially in new colleges/libraries. For old papers, it is rather easy to ask another library to copy, but for a book, it is not.<p>For over 60 years, this is out of print. Now Rare and Expensive.<p>Recently, SDI Publications( Thailand) published this reprint. Plate Quality is fine enough. Two hardcover volumes are more convenient to use than the original 4 volumes.<p>I recommend public libraries and colleges with art-historical department should get this REPRINT admired. It is worthy to mind damage to the original rare versions.Originally published in a four-volume edition now virtually unobtainable, this work, by one of the foremost Asian scholars of the last century, re mains the most comprehensive treatise on Chinese Buddhist sculpture in any western language. Originally published in 1960, this tale of a curious cow is dated and has its problems by today's standards, since the cow is constantly chastised for being curious and is told that it's liked despite its curious nature, but an author's note after the story tells boys & girls that it's actually GOOD for kids to be curious. An excellent contribution

For those with an interest in early imperial China, this is an exceptional resource. It's quite readable and detailed enough to provide a solid background for narrower studies or to provide Tang-specific information to a Chinese history generalist.
