Important and Powerful

I personally am very selective when it comes to any art survey volume. An art survey I have found can be either very weak, or very important and powerful, yet rarely anything in-between. In terms of the Italian Renaissance they are rarely on the powerful side as they don't function to serve the key purposes for historians, curators, and collectors. Most importantly surveys rarely clarify the impact of significant artists of a period and their relationship to the bigger realm of art history between their collective works. This is not the case with Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, and the Renaissance of Venetian Painting.

For example, the current exhibition, of the same title, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The rich and informative catalogue by David Allan Brown et al., a publication done in association with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., focuses on the most intense period of the Renaissance in Venice. The work examines a time when Giorgione, Titian (young at the time,) Sebastiano del Piombo, and Palma Vecchio worked alongside each other, and their lesser known colleagues, each and all in the light of the great Giovanni Bellini. The period which is examined represents the first three decades of the sixteenth century. It also represents a pivotal and major period of visual, and intellectual, impact for Italian art in Italy, Europe, and the world.

Brown et. al. does not handle this exhibition catalogue like a normal, or typical, survey. With 336 p., 9 1/2 x 11 1/2 , 31 halftones + 162 color illus. it is a masterfully planned art volume. Although written in a serious and scholarly manner, a layman will enjoy it.

The volume does not divide up the artists, but looks at their interrelationships. Secular subjects are explored, as are themes of music, love, and time. The leading scholars efforts, along with their detailed entries, provides a solid source for continuing discussion of pictures that are nothing short of monumental.

Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, and the Renaissance of Venetian Painting is an exhibition book that is, in my view, well worth obtaining now while available at the publisher price. I see this work as a required addition to any great library on Renaissance art today, and will certainly be valued tomorrow.

High water mark of renaissance painting

This remarkable show (and catalogue) is a summary of Venetian painting from 1500 to 1530, allowing a side by side comparison of the work of Bellini, Giorgione, and Titian in what was one of Venice's astonishing high water marks of artistic creativity.

Once you have been bitten by the bug, these paintings are with you for good. Seeing this work firsthand, one can't help be seduced by the ravishing, luminous beauty light and layers of glazing that makes these paintings unique. The stillness in some of these works suggest the real subject here is light and color -- something these Venetians seem to have captured like no other group of artists.

The reproductions in the catalogue are quite good, and there are a very generous amount of close detail shots of the paintings too -- something particularly useful in illustrating the intricacy of detail in Giorgione's work. The essays are interesting, but my favorite is one I almost missed after the technical photographs of xrays in the back: an essay which describes how the Venetian painters were at a remarkable crossroads of shared experimentation in color including glassmakers, creators of fabric dyes, and other tradesmen that contributed to a new world of color effects in paint. For example the painters would use finely ground glass mixed into the oils to give the glazes a more bright, refractory quality.

This is a captivating show and a great catalogue to accompany it.

The Renaissance at its finest.

Winner of the Tupelo Press Judge's Prize, Bellini in Istanbul is a compilation of free-verse poetry featuring absorbing descriptions of Italian scenes, Turkish fish markets, and other exotic locales as well as deeply personal difficulties. The end of a relationship turned sour in a foreign land, followed by the creation of a new one; the pain and wonder of bringing a child into the world; and the eternal search for meaning in life make for an unforgettable poetic experience. "Ezan": In Bebek, a famous tenor calls / the ezan from Kemalettin's elegant, dove-grey mosque, // his voice spilling like noon light over the park. / It's Friday. The devout are washing // off the morning's dust, their shoes lined up / neatly at the lip of the public fountains.

I am not a big poetry reader, but I loved this book. The visualizations one encounters while reading this poetry is both beautiful and almost nostalgic for an age gone by. It will make you pine to go abroad and experience what Bever writes about. It simply will take you away.

I think that this book is great for my class because it contains a story on immigration (I teach ESOL) and it has Niagara Falls in it which is the closest big tourist attraction to Rochester that is internationally known. The kids enjoy these books paired with The Man Who Walked Across the Twin Towers. It makes a nice theme of acrobatics, circuses and social activism.

Award winning author and illustrator, Emily Arnold McCully, has written another wonderful adventure, starring Mirette and Bellini. Our world famous high-wire walkers are sailing to America where they will perform at Niagara Falls. While on board ship, Mirette befriends a Polish orphan boy, Jakob, who's traveling to America to live with his uncle. When they arrive at Ellis Island, Jakob's uncle is not there to claim him. Bellini knows that Jakob will be sent back to Poland and so he decides to takes the little boy with them to Niagara Falls. When they arrive, they find their performance has turned into a big competition. A Mr Patch, who claims to be the greatest high-wire walker in America says that he will perform a trick that's never been done before on the wire, becoming the greatest tightrope walker in the world. He tells the press and anyone else who will listen that Mirette and Bellini will fall. The next day as Mirette and Bellini practice and supervise the wire installation across the falls, Jakob follows Patch and his men to find out what trick he has up his sleeve. And what he finds out saves his new friends lives..... Ms McCully's latest book is a delightful story of friendship, intrigue and courage. Her wonderful text and beautiful, expressive watercolor artwork will transport youngsters back in time to life at the turn of the century. And as little Jakob saves the day and Mirette and Bellini triumph, kids will enjoy the happily-ever-after ending. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Mirette and Bellini Cross Niagara Falls is a winner!

Serious Consideration of Bellini
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-29
This well organized, and well illustrated, volume edited by Peter Humfrey is a scholarly comprehensive study of Giovanni Bellini's intriguing and sometimes problematic Italian masterworks of art. Today recognized as one of the greatest Renaissance artists to come from Italy, Giovanni Bellini was in his day one of the dominant painters of the Early Renaissance.

This collective publication includes serious consideration of Bellini's social and professional life which establishes him in early modern Venice. There is an interesting (and sure to be groundbreaking) reassessment of his artistic relationship with his brother-in-law Mantegna, as well as his relationship to Flemish painting.

A fascinating examination is also presented of his relationship with the new style of art that emerged in Italy around 1500. What sets this volume apart from previous scholarly studies of Bellini's work is the coming together of these unique and interesting social and professional factors.

Bellini's approach to sculpture and architecture is studied in-depth, and detailed, and the study of Bellini's breathtaking use of color and landscape, traditionally elements recognized as central to his renowned pictorial genius, (and central to his constantly evolving pictorial technique,) is nothing short of brilliant.

Including an impressive 384 pages and 114 half-tones this complete examination of Bellini concludes with chapters focusing directly on his not often examined drawings and collaborators. There have been many studies of Bellini over the years but in this highly enlightening publication important commissioned essays finally come together to focus on significant topics and themes central (and pivotal) to Bellini's career.

This is the art volume of the season. A superb compliment to a fine art library collection which is sure to be a sought after collectable work in the very near future. Highly recommended.

This book comes in more than one part. This book is Part 1 and we have another listed that is part II. I wonder if there are more books to the set than that.....

The art work in this book is beautiful. While most of it is in black and white there are a lot of gorgeous full-color vivid photos of art.

Written all in French. But the photos are universal in language.

This is a magisterial work written by a profoundly learned and supremely gifted human being. Coffey's staggeringly detailed description and analysis of Bellini's painting of the crucified Christ is overwhelming. For the student and scholar of Art History, this work is a model of formal organization and scholarship, the result of long years of painstakingly detailed thought and study. As an example of one person's ability to examine, think, and communicate, the work is inspirational, and a tribute to the author's passionate and reverent industry.

Profoundly tragic is the fact that the author died before going on to write and teach about this and other subjects, and to lead the full and happy life that those who loved her wished for her. She will never be forgotten by those whose lives she touched.

The collaborative work of Peter Fingar (Executive Partner in the digital strategy firm the Greystone Group, and a noted expert on business process management who has taught computing studies courses in the U.S. and abroad) and Joseph Bellini (Senior Vice president of the Software Products and Services Division at Brooks Automation, a global leader in the semiconductor manufacturing industry), The Real-Time Enterprise: Competing On Time With The Revolutionary Business SEx Machine goes beyond buzzwords and hype to examine and explain the many facets of a real-time enterprise. Divided into eleven chapters that range from "The Real-Time Enterprise in Twenty Minutes" to "Thoughts and Strategies for the Real-Time Enterprise", the thoroughly "reader friendly" the informed and informative text is additionally enhanced with the inclusion of a Foreword by Max Moore; an appendices ("The Myths and Realities of the Real-Time Enterprise" and "Cycle-Time management: A Survey of Six Industries"); and a detailed index. Very practical reading, The Real-Time Enterprise is especially commended to the attention of business managers and entrepreneurs engaged in time-based competition in order to either protect or expand their corporate operations.

It is really hard to find help for a child who is border line. He has social difficulties and several "asberger like" issues but doesn't have asbergers. He needs help recognizing, understanding social cues and proper behavior in social settings. I think there where parts of this book that was helpful and a few good exercises that we tried. I like the common sense approach this book takes to dealing with children with social issues. I also like the "through a child's eyes" prospective, what is socially appropriate behavior for adults doesn't apply to the playground. That is so true! The examples used are funny and made me laugh in an otherwise difficult part of our family life.

I did skip over several chapters because they didn't apply to our situation. For example there is a large part of the book that deals with how to tell if your child has social difficulties. We have seen 3 therapists and 2 pediatric neuropsychologists we understand his strengths and weaknesses so this part of the book was redundant for me. This is also the 3rd book I have read. The first few chapters help explain what are social difficulties are and how they affect your child and your family. If you are having trouble understanding why your child is having problems at school I think this would be helpful.

I can't say enough good things about this book!

This is the best book I have read and used on the topic of teaching social interaction skills. Dr. Bellini speaks from an incredible depth of experience and provides more than enough information for teachers and parents to follow through with the strategies. "Building Social Relationships" definitely should be read by anyone who wants to positively impact the life of a child who struggles in the social arena. Children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and many others who struggle with social skills deficits and impaired social cognition can benefit from his approaches. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

A must have for clinicians, educators and parents

This was an enjoyable read and an extremely insightful publication. It is the most comprehensive book available for teaching social skills to children and adolescents on the autism spectrum. The book contains over 30 social skill strategies that can be implemented by educators, clinicians, and parents in variety of settings. The author also provides detailed information on how to assess social functioning and evaluate outcomes. A social skill checklist is included that is helpful in identifying specific social skill deficits and in developing social objectives. Perhaps most impressive, the author translates a complex conceptual framework into an understandable and useful social skills training model. This book gets my highest recommendation.

This book is very helpful and positive. I really like books that are positive, and that tell you about solutions to problems.

As someone with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I know that if there had been books like this 30 years ago, I would have learned much earlier in life what things are appropriate to do and say in what situation. It's too bad that there were no books like this until very recent years!

This book along with "Arabian love child" made me a fan of Michelle Reid that i buy whatever book of hers that I can lay my hands on. I am not going to repeat the story because another reviewer has already given it. While it is true that the plot line is similar to 'the mistress bride' (just like for 'gold ring of betrayal' and 'arabian love child')yet the way the book is written, the scenes and the characters make it a different and an equally good read. If you enjoyed reading 'the mistress bride' do read this one too, u will enjoy it equally and will not feel like you are reading a copy cat.

I have always enjoyed Michelle Reid's books, but this story has made me a fan for life. I was hooked from the first page until the very last page. You will love this type of story if you enjoy strong and masterful male characters. The female counterpart is very feminine and vulnerable because of her love for this man. One of the reasons I enjoyed this story so much is that the couple had already established an relationship. The reader has the pleasure of discovering how the relationship is progressing. From the very begining the reader knows that the couple is very strongly attracted to each other and the chemisty practical sizzles. I love the way the male character does all he can to keep this lady in his life. The conflict is wonderful and different. Please readers don't miss the opportunity to read this book. I was spellbounded.

The secret of this and other Reid books, I find, is in the subtleties and the knowledge of each other......
I found the joy between the two and latent fear of parting just great. The handling of the satellite characterss is done wee, too. No one was Super Sheik or Wonder Girl - just people, although of a favored economical and social class, with people's mistakes. Good for 6 or 7 reads, and then, more. Thank you Ms. Reid. Write faster.......

When I first bought this book I was excited to read it but when I got home and read the back I thought it was the reissue of "The Mistress Bride." I even went on this site to see if it was a reissue and I read the copy right inside of the book. It isn't a reissue but it is almost like reading the same book. For those's who haven't read the Mistress Bride let me describe the book for you.
Marco Bellini is part of one of the richest families while Antonia Carter is just beautiful and his mistress. Marco's father is ill and want's him very much to be married and produce a heir. Marco must choose a bride, one that isn't his mistress. But Antonia is the only woman he wants in his life.
This story had some good stuff in it but you can't help compare it to "The Mistress Bride" and that book was better. That is the only reason why I gave this book three stars. I do have to say that this book had a beautiful ending that makes me want to re-read it for that reason.
