This book is about the SBTB gang during a "normal" week. Slater, Jesse, Lisa, and Screech are in a separate plot element--a scavanger hunt for Palaside's history anniversary. Kelly has a new job at a country club, but receives sexual harrassment from her boss. Will Zack, a new club member with his dad closing a deal with Kelly's boss' father, help her? Will Maria Elena, Kelly's new friend and who is being harrassed herself (AND blackmailed)? This is all a mess for poor Kelly! The suprising ending will make this a VERY satisfying book! I'd recommend it!!!

Profound Observations
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-10
The art of Virginia Woolf gathers in this small yet profoundly moving observation of the cycle of life. A garden in July becomes a canvas upon which Woolf paints a new and haunting picture of her intricate perspective. Flowers seem more like immense stained glass windows from the vantage point of the snail making its way through a flower bed. Minute clips of towering passersby illustrate the human experience where so much is anything but what it appears to be on the surface. The flower bed magically transforms through the hypnotic prose becoming an endless landscape of challenge, yet more importantly a sacred cathedral wherein the vulnerable snail, a methaphor for the individual, carefully negotiates life inside the surrounding looming beauty. This story crys to be read out loud, and when it is, it shines and verifies the genius of its conception.

My 9 year old son and I have been reading this book every night together before going to bed. The stories are great, they put him to bed feeling good and inspired. They are short enough so that if you are tired, (I am a single parent!)you can choose s story that lasts only 5 minutes (or even less!) and it's inspiring enough and delightful enough that they feel nurtured before going to bed. We both LOVE the book!

Prequel to Fowler's "Dictionary of Modern English Usage"

If you liked "A Dictionary of Modern English Usage," you will love "The King's English."

For three generations, a single book dominated the market as the authoritative reference in matters of grammar, style, and usage in the English language: "A Dictionary of Modern English Usage" by H.W. Fowler, first published in 1926, now in its third edition (published 1996). Twenty years earlier, however, Fowler and his younger brother F.G. (their given names were Henry Watson and Francis George) had collaborated on a precursor, "The King's English," first published in 1906 (and which went into its third edition a quarter century later, a few years after the first edition of "A Dictionary" appeared).

This book is every bit as charming and graceful as the later "Dictionary" and, while this earlier work covers fewer topics than "Dictionary," it treats the ones that it does cover with as much thoroughness and skill as "Dictionary"--in some cases with more thoroughness, since the book is structured as part essay, part textbook, and can thus afford more examples and exercises than "Dictionary." The book begins by laying out five "general principles" worthy of Strunk and White (whose masterpiece "The Elements of Style" did not appear until half a century later): "Prefer the familiar word to the far-fetched. Prefer the concrete word to the abstract. Prefer the single word to the circumlocution. Prefer the short word to the long. Prefer the Saxon word to the Romance."

The Fowlers expand upon those five "principles," and also treat vocabulary, syntax, punctuation, and other such technical matters in great depth. But amidst these technical chapters they also include a lengthy chapter on "airs and graces," in which they advise the reader about imbuing writing with art.

The Fowlers write with every bit as much elegance, flair, and humor as they advise their readers to use, and their mastery of their subject is unsurpassed. "The King's English" has stood the test of time and, today, a century after its initial publication, it still stands the Fowler brothers with Strunk and White from half a century ago and Bryan Garner of today in the first rank of authors about style and usage in the English language.

I have been in the hotel business for 11 years and this has given myself and my staff a new attitude toward our guests--the people that pay our salaries.

I read the entire book in a day off, highlited like crazy and was psyched to go back and share many of the ideas with my staff!

Kudos...I really enjoyed it :)

I bought this book for a class about two years ago, it was a not required, but my professor suggested it in addition to our required text. After the semester ended, the course was reformatted, and this book was not being bought back. This book sat on the shelf with others I've kept, decided to buy, or also have been left with until about November.

I really wish we had used the book, I wish that I had read it earlier because some of the design principles raised by Bell have dramatically helped to improve my work. I haven't finished the book yet, but it has helped me greatly to understand my own designs to explain them to others, as well as to form a starting point with the idea that humans have certain native proportions, angles, shapes, colors, and patterns that are perceived as beautiful. These concepts are necessary when you are involved in landscape architecture, and I'm very glad I ended up using this book.

Latter-Day Spies is the kind of series that I wish I could read to my kids every night! Michele Ashman Bell has a talent for keeping the tempo from dragging and presenting a new twist in almost every chapter. She also includes some fun science and magic tricks as part of the story. I would recommend this book (and her other Spyhunt book "The Dragon's Jaw") to anyone age 8 and up.

As a fan of Le Mans, I had been looking forward to reading this book for some time. I was very pleased when I finally did. I have read numerous books on Le Mans through the years, but this is absolutely the best. Some tend to be too laborious, but Laban's book strikes a near perfect balance in its quest to cover the whole history of Le Mans since 1923. It kept me engaged throughout as I discovered details that I hadn't known, yet it was perfect for anyone who is even casually interested in this great and historic race. At a very reasonable price with great photos and organized text that enabled the reader to keep up with details. I loved the size and the layout and the quality of stock was spot on. Again, absolutely the best book on Le Mans.
