This is a great book detailing Doyle's inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. This book is also a fine introduction to a wonderful man in Joseph Bell. Joseph Bell is the subject of a number of fictionalized movies which are certainly worth your time and money.

A Solid Study: Best of Breed
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-28
The publisher's description is very accurate. This is the best study ever conducted on the impact of job training for the disadvantaged. Basically, study finds very modest successes for certain groups of adults, women in particular, but does not show general success. To put it mildly, most government job training programs are abysmal failures, hiding behind meaningless statistics (with no control groups for comparison, and methods of data collection that overstate success). This study actually provides a randomly assigned control group for comparison!

By now, 2003, the study is quite dated. JTPA is a dead program, but its successor is still living. Despite the hype, the Workforce Investment Act is not much different in terms of the actual services being delivered (and by many of the same providers or individuals). The main difference between then and now is the process for participant selection, some degree of integration and/or co-location of services, and the methods of paying for support services. Unfortunately, for mainly political reasons, the WIA program will probably not be subjected to the same level of rigorous scrutiny as found in this book. This study is an outstanding example of how a program evaluation should be done. For that reason alone, it should be standard reading for practioners in workforce development and in program evaluation.

As the performance analyst assigned to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) at the Legislative Budget Board in Austin, I found this book to be a superb reference and guide to the program and its performance. When I became TWC's first director of planning, I ordered it for the agency library. It is a tragedy that few practitioners have read it, much less addressed its findings.

A beautiful glimpse of Yorkshire, a handy guide to sketching on nature reserves
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-12
Artist Richard Bell has been recounting daily life and nature observations in Yorkshire, England with his local sketchbooks and his Wild West Yorkshire Nature Diary for 10 years now. In them he records, in pen, ink, and watercolor, his ramblings around his village, his potterings in his garden, and his jaunts up peak and down path in Yorkshire. This is manna from heaven for any Anglophile! Now, in "Drawing on Reserves," Richard Bell shows the rest of us how to do the same--even for those of us who have never sketched before! In wonderfully down-to-earth terms, he presents truly useful tips on what to pack in your art bag, how to find great outdoor places to draw, & how to mix colors and apply wash for scenes that are striking in their freshness. In addition to being a handy guide, the book itself is a pleasure to hold and leaf through. The ink and fine paper he uses for printing his books give a wonderful luminosity and freshness of color to each of his drawings. His many illustrations of birds, flowers, land- and seascapes are a delight to look at, as well as models to emulate. His little books are beautifully done and they are surprisingly inexpensive (less than £5 or $10, in most cases).

This is truly an enjoyable read for parents as well as for the little ones. The illustrations are beautifully rendered and the selected poems are unique and lovely to read. Some of the poems are too lengthy for 2 - 3 year olds; however, it's easy to pick and choose and still finish most of this book.

What can I say about the Duomo, Florence's Cathedral, Brunelleschi's magnificent dome and its spectacular bell tower that hasn't already been said. We really are pleased that we purchased Whitehot's Audio Guide - it was definitely money well spent. When we completed the tour we realized that the narrator did a fablous job of entertaining us while we were being educated.

I've only begun to discover these whole series of books by Beth Cruise. I read this one in one night aloud with my lover in bed. We took turns reading it and it was a very well written book. I want to buy the rest of them, but this is a classic must own for any Saved By the Bell fan. Even more so for the gay Saved By the Bell fans, this is some homoerotic literature that my lover and I enjoy reading. So if you're gay, like I am, than you must pick this up. Even straight people will enjoy this.
