What an exciting and creative designer......her designs are resonant with color, and are based on simple motifs - stripes, circles, leaves, and tiger strips - which can be used to create bold, graphic effects as well as more ornate designs. The book has templates and step by step instructions, which clearly show how to transfer these to a variety of plain surfaces using only the most basic materials. Projects will appeal to both the homemaker and artist. Projects range from a deck chair with tiger strips to a dotty lampshade and base, chequered table top and jewellelry boxes, decorative plates, etc.

What do monks do? What is the meaning of and purpose of what they do? If you are looking for the answers to these questions, you will find them in this book, and more besides. You will be welcomed by the author to the beautiful Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight in England, and shown around the monastery with an explanation of the meaning of every place and every time for the spiritual life of the monks. The meanings of the signs of nature are complemented with corresponding quotations from the signs of revelation. The book is written in a very appealing, simple and direct way, and contains some touching anecdotes from the personal life of the author. At a time when there are so many misleading and deviant books masquerading as spiritual treatises, it is a joy to find a completely orthodox contemporary spiritual work. It has a general message that goes beyond the cloistered life. It is not at all difficult to read, as the spiritual content is woven into your stay at the monastery, as you are guided through the places of interest there. Quarr was also a special place of prayer for three hundred years in the middle ages, and the author often speaks of the blessing from the prayers of the monks of the original monastery there. At the end of the book we are standing together on the shore of the sea pondering on the beauty to be found on the island, and the uncreated beauty of God. "It is a beauty unknown yet known: known in the still depths of the soul by the deep and subtle joy that radiates from it; known from the gestures of generous love that come from others... It is the beauty of the distant sky...The blue of the sea is murky and eddying; the blue of the beyond is crystal and still. To reach the horizon, the point of intersection of the timeless with time, we need to leave the earth we know... `Then shall I know even as I am known.'"

Uranometria has 2 editions

Make sure you are getting Edition 2 and not 1. The ads don't seem to be distinguishing them. Ed 2 is superior of course, and was published in 2001, Ed 1 was published 1993 to 1996.

You also have to decide if you want more deep sky objects or more stars. The Millennium Star Atlas would be a better choice if you want to more closely match the star field you see to help identify the objects. Uranometria has far more objects but a good portion of those may be extraneous and may actually get in the way of what you are seeking. Millennium has plenty of DSOs actually and more stars to help identify the objects you are looking for.

Ed 2 includes two progressive finder atlases to help zero in on where you want to go, because it is easy to get lost when looking at just a 2-page spread.

A True Classic and a Pleasure to Read

This is the third volume in the series The Crystalline State edited by Sir Lawrence Bragg. As volumes one and two (volume 1: L. Bragg (3rd ed. 1966), "The Crystalline State". Volume 2: R. W. James (1965), "The Optical Principles of the Diffraction of X-Rays".) this is still an amazing book. While it is both seriously outdated and out of print, many details of the method of X-ray structure determination that everyone takes for granted nowadays are presented as new ideas and thoroughly explained in a thrilling way. While I would definitely not recommend this book to a beginner, it can be a great pleasure and enjoyment for the expert to read in this book. My copy spends more time on my desk than on the shelf.

History, drama, death of loved ones, war, famous people, writing, publishing, post-publishing, Hitler, refugees, aeroplanes droning over the house, no money, no food, outsider, noise, 3 months of bombing London, diaries rescued from rubble, "The foot less prompt to meet the morning dew, The heart less bounding at emotion new, And hope, once crush'd, less quick to spring again.", hungry, make up imaginary meals, no more room of one's own, Hitler believed to be invading in "3 weeks" ., no future, no spending one's elderly years in financial comfort, "observe my own despondency", "I will go down with my colours flying", "write to Ethel and invite myself to stay" (E does not answer) , threatened with rest cure, "L. is doing the rhododendrons..." This, the last of Virginia's diaries is a masterpiece. I read it first, then began with diary 1, then proceeded back to diary 5 and read it for a second time. Highly recommended. ....MONTHS LATER; I've discovered that I've just written a review of vol 5, not vol 4. Will fix one of these days! Vol 4 is excellent also with Lytton, Dora, and Roger ending and success, The Waves, fame, Yeats, drive thru Jew-hating Germany, visits, Quentin, Angelica, oh yeah and L writes "Quack ......" ,etc... quite wonderful volume(s) four AND five are! and V.W. at an important time in her life.

Very Good Science Biography!

Review Date: 2008-08-22
The Scholastic Science Supergiants are a great addition to a classroom library and contains great information about famous scientists lives. This biography is about Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. In an easy to read (about 5th grade nonfiction level) biography, the book details Alexander's life focusing on the invention of the telephone and how he eventually invented it. I learned that his father and grandfather were interested in communication and the his mother was deaf. As he grew, he became interested in his father's business and helping find ways to make it easier for his mother to communicate. At least one of his wives was hard of hearing also. Very nice biography and good for kids to learn about his life and motivations.

A fun and informative 100 page read. Each game species has its own chapter, and Bob gives detailed advice on tactics and load for each. This is Pennsylvania woods and thickets hunting .... not expansive Dakota fields. The chapters are dotted with his short and sweet personal experiences after game, and B&W hunting photos of him and his friends. No details for dog handlers or trainers. Woodcock through turkey.
