biography of Confederate general in Western theater of War
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-25
The solid military biography follows Bell's advance in the Confederate Army from captain of a company of Tennessee Volunteers to brigadier general who was regarded as Nathan Forrest's "right arm." Bell's own exceptional military capabilities and leadership have been largely overshadowed by being a part of the exploits of the better-known and more colorful Forrest. But Hughes, author of previous books on lesser-known aspects and figures of the Confederate military, demonstrates these qualities of Bell by detailing activities such a troop placements, probing maneuvers, assaults and defenses, terrain, and the involvement of key officers of the opposing sides in numerous engagements of all sizes Bell was involved in. Bell was active mostly in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi. The biography has a personal touch concerning Bell with the participation of Moretti and Browne, descendants of his. The journeyman military biography not only establishes the place of Bell in the military activities of the Confederacy in an area of its western theater, but is also an account of the conflict in this area.

I'm no fan of cold hard facts, but this fascinating series elegantly illustrates the facts in a whole new light. I find myself glued to the material studying the complexities of each illustration, and the brilliant scientific schematics. A love at first sight? sure, I belive in it.

Barter's book on the Tower of Pisa is the only comprehensive book I could find on the tower and is a fascinating history. Barter provides a thorough history of medieval bell towers and defense towers followed by a detailed history of how the tower was constructed, why the tower leans, and what is currently being done to stop the lean.

Read this book before visiting Pisa!

Opinion about the book

The subject is boring and you will bear in mind very dull pictures before you actually start reading the book. The first 3 Chapters might give you boring impression, but it is because the platform of the subject has to be revealed even if it is not that exciting. Further chapters are REALLY Good. It is actually the handbook for conducting business research - from the very formulation of your research question till the very end, hypothesis acception or rejection. Moreover, I was advised by many PhD students to use this book while writing my research paper. The book does have all the features stated on the back page of the book. It is not only theoretical guideline but also practical handbook which has answers almost to all your questions. I really like it.

Altering the Racist and Sexist Paradigm in Academia
Helpful Votes: 38 out of 39 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-28
This compliation of essays lays down the curricular and research agenda for the establishment of a Black Women's Studies program in the academy. It weaves personal narrative, literary criticism, and empirical analysis which cogently argues that Black Studies and Women's Studies in academia do not adequately address the multiple consciousness of Black women through discourses on racism, sexism, classism, and sexuality. The authors of the various articles articulate the need to look at Black women's lives as multi-faceted and complex, neither wholly positive or negative. I am not sure if the authors decided to change the name of the book to make it more marketable but the original title is "All the Women are White, All the Blacks are Men,But Some of Us Are Brave: Black Women's Studies." I tend to prefer the original title because it brilliantly captures the dilemmas that Black women face in higher education and the wider - negation of their experiences as Black people and as women. The book delivers an historical examination of the Black Women's Studies movement that began in the early 1970's with the formation of the Combahee River Collective, a black feminist organization and the National Black Feminist Organization. It also pushes for the development of a Black Women's Studies program that reaches out beyond the halls of academe and situates its curricular and research agenda in political and economic organizing on behalf of Black women of all educational and economic classes.
