Provoking Exploration of Biography and Philosophical Theory

Review Date: 2005-02-09
Linda Bell's book divides, not so neatly, into two broad sections: a biographical exploration of her life (a coming-of-age and awareness) and the philosophical issues that have given meaning to the life she describes in honest and open reflection.

A feminist, who learned first-hand what sexism was in the halls of the academy, Bell's writing indicates that to think, to explore one's life in a disciplined fashion, can take one far from the environment in which one was raised, educated, and employed. In fact, a thoughtful consideration of the issues Bell raises are not only appropriate for those who consider themselves "philosophers", but are topics all humans should deal with in our ever more complex society.

Well done.

What else can you say but "Bizarre"

Review Date: 2005-12-29
This is Barry Humphries from his later Dada days. It's a collection of everything weird, outlandish, unexpected and literally bizarre. Where else would you find a photograph of a three-legged man and other oddities of nature.

There is no easy way to classify, or even describe, this eclectic collection or anthology of the bizarre. There are pages on sexual topics. There are pages showing the effects of many different ways to mutilate pictures of the Mona Lisa. There is a wealth of detail, with the one theme being the bizarre nature of the contents.

This book is a lot of fun if you have an appreciation of the bizarre. It's classical Barry Humphries, playfully satirizing the world with its own bizarreness.

fabulous German thriller

Review Date: 2006-02-01
Everyone is shocked to learn that the highly regarded heiress Erika Wallmann fell down the steps in her lakeside home and died. The police, knowing how popular Erika has been due to her good deeds, investigate carefully. Some hints at suicide surface, but that and foul play are not proven; instead the cause of death is a tragic accident.

Fifty-eight years old Jupp Scholten worked for Erika's father for years at Kottgen Civil Engineering Contractors, but recently her husband Kurt took over running the firm. Jupp dislikes his pompous new boss who he believes is nothing like his previous employer. Soon after the funeral, Jupp hears disturbing rumors that Kurt is sleeping with his secretary leaving the clerk to wonder how this sleaze can hop into another woman's bed while mourning his loss. He postulates how Kurt could have killed Erika leaving no clues that homicide occurred. As he develops his homicide theory, instead of immediately explaining to the cops what he affirms happened, Jupp wonders if he could duplicate the murder with his nagging wife Hilde as the victim.

BLACK ICE is a terrific translation of a fabulous German thriller that grips the audience with an apparent hero starring as a stumbling amateur sleuth, but soon takes a dark psychological spin that leaves the audience to ponder whether Scholten will rid himself of his wife in a copy cat murder. Readers realize immediately that Jupp is unhappy with his bitter lemon personal life that is cleverly interwoven with his inquiries and conceptual contemplations; for instance using hookers for sexual release. Fans in one sitting will want to know whether his hatred for Hilde proves enough for him to kill her, expose Kurt, or something else.

An Outstanding Gospel Witness Material
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-12
D.L. Moody once said: "Salvation is free, as free as the air we breath...". While it is true that the gospel is simple and that salvation is a free gift. Many proffesing Christians are mere proffesors, that is to say that their concept of salvation relies on the fact that they have "prayed" and "ask Jesus into their hearts", well meaning? hopefully yes, but at best it is not relying on Christ alone. This is an example of faith in faith, i.e. existensialism. What people need is faith in Christ, and in Him alone, void of any efforts, empty of self; through repentance from sin and faith in Christ, any sinner can have salvation. This book provides a good deal of ideas for evangelizing the lost, without the heresy of instant prayerism.

They weren't victims - they were victors
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-26
The focus of this novel is a Christian church in Rome during the time of Nero. Most of the members are slaves, the others are poor, though free. Part one gives us the background of some of the church members: where they came from, how they got to Rome (if not born there), and how they became a Christian. The second part deals with the fire and the beginning of the persecution of the Christians, who were blamed with starting it. The last part details how individuals responded to the persecution. Among the Christians, there is heroism and cowardice - mostly the former. Among the non-Christians, there are those who become Christians because of the witness of those killed for an IDEA.

Although Paul, Luke, Nero, Claudia Acte and other well-known historical people appear in this book, the main characters have humbler backgrounds. With one exception - Beric, son of a British king and adopted by Roman Senator Flavius Crispus. However, he was subject to humiliation like the others which opened the door to his salvation. Manasses, Lalage, Euphemia, Phaon, Persis, Niger, Eunice and the others showed the roots of the Church: the poor, the outcasts, the uneducated. This novel allows us to see underneath: they were individuals with different strengths and weaknesses, personalities and talents.

It was refreshing to read a novel set in ancient Rome that focused on the lower classes. Life was hard, perhaps unbearable, but these people had the Kingdom to look forward to. Far from being victims, or seeing themselves as victims, they were victorious in Christ. Forgiving those who hated and/or persecuted them was not always easy, but gave them a freedom and a joy that others could not know or understand.
