this is a wonderful book. I just happened upon it while browsing for books in a discount store for my 2 year old and it instantly became of her favorites. we read it every night before we go to bed. she has memorized it and now reads it back to me. naming all the animals is the best part to her. i have started giving it as a gift and other mothers call me raving about it. it's a must have!

Absolutely wonderful!

This is a wonderfully illustrated story of creation. My 5 year old daughter received it as a gift for her birthday and it is already one of our favorite books. It is well-written for this age group and the illustrations are just great! However, we did find one thing that we're not sure about - on page 22, it names the leopard and the loon - but there is not a picture of the loon. There is a picture for every other animal named and we were just wondering what happened to the loon? We are not in any way trying to take away from the book, we're just curious. We still highly recommend this book!

I read this book months ago; it has stayed in a warm place in my memory for about a year. Browsing through the stacks at Amazon, I come across it and am surprised that only one person has reviewed it. It's well written, it's an interesting insight into a life different from mine in almost every way -- money, geography, religion, vocabulary, etc. Yet my life and this fictional life are still very American. Reading it, learning about a different America from a great Amercain writer, made me a better person. It gets my highest recommendation.

Religion, poverty, and poetry combined in a powerful novel

Glancy is an underratted underknown writer of incredible sensitivity and expression. Her prose is consistently understated, but that doesn't keep it from conveying anguish and complexity in this story of an innocent girl in a gritty landscape. Closest to Kaye Gibbons, but Gibbons is looser. Oprah Oprah, why haven't you read this one???

Review Date: 2007-07-09
In this stimulating modern classic, Grandmaster Ray Keene investigates the view that there is a polarity in modern chess. On the one hand are those who systematically analyse forcing openings, such as the Sicilian Defence, hoping to find the philosopher's stone of absolute truth. On the other are those who deliberately select offbeat openings, in the hope of throwing well booked-up opponents off the scent. Are both approaches valid? Find out and improve your results.
Raymond Keene is a British Chess Champion, and the first British Player to achieve a FIDE (World Chess Federation) Grandmaster norm. He was awarded the OBE for services to chess in 1985. He is Chess Correspondent of The Times, The Sunday Times, The Spectator, and The International Herald Tribune. He is a prolific author of chess books, several of which are classics of the genre. He has organised three World Chess Championships.

The best way to open a game of chess

Chess grandmaster Raymond Keene analyses the compelling question of the best way to open a game. The advantages of both the traditional Sicilian defence and the more abstract and offbeat openings are discussed. Alltogether an excellent way to improve your own game. A must have for any chess enthusiast. (Published by Hardinge and Simpole).

After reading a review in one of my favourite monthlys I rushed to purchase a well researched and produced piece of graphic literature. A beautiful composition ranging from traditional media(paints, crayons...) to 3dimensional pieces of computer based work. Well worth my hard earned cash.

I read this book while doing research on my Great-Great Grandfather, who fought in the War and was a member of the 11th Virginia Infantry, Company B. The author of this book being of Company C, 11th Virginia, I was able to trace somewhat the actions of my Great-Great Grandfather during the war. A compelling book from the perspective of the young men of the South who bravely fought to defend their invaded homeland. It only pains me that the truth written in this antiquted volume has been all but forgotten in todays "history" lessons.

A soldier's engaging & articulate southern perspective.

In this book, Captain William H. Morgan, (a member of "The Immortal 600"), relates personal experience "in camp, in bivouac, on the march, on picket, on the skirmish line, on the battlefield, and in prison" -- and also gives a history not only of his own company, but of the Eleventh Regiment, Kemper's Brigade, and Pickett's Division. Captain Morgan's writing is delightful and a valuable addition to the story of the war. He tells his story in a direct, pleasant, graphic way which conveys his thoughts, opinions, and the facts very distinctly -- and holds the interest of his readers in a very engaging way. A complete index adds to its value.

This is a fantastic book! I have a K-1 combination class and this book of poetry is perfect for addressing the needs of all the students. The best thing about this book is that the kids LOVE the poems. They are fun and catchy. There are many ideas for extension activities. You can even think of your own. Buy this book...you won't be sorry!

Mark's Square in the time we had available. We will be looking for WhiteHot Productions audio guides every where we go in the future. Kudos to the narrator for making this so enjoyable.

Pittsburgh. It is a marvelous city that I visited back in 2004 for New Year's Eve. I enjoyed my time watching the city from the hills. I decided to purchase this book just to remember Pittsburgh by. I am glad I did. Wonderful pictures and a brief history of what made this city the great city it is! If you are a Pittsburgh resident or have visited it in the past then I recommend this book. Thanks for the memories Pittsburgh!!

Excellent book for Pittsburgh lovers

This is a fantastic book with high quality photographs. Anyone who has been to Pittsburgh recently is at least impressed and some like me fall in love with the great city of Pittsburgh. This book explains why. Those who have never been to Pittsburgh are always surprised when I say it is my favorite urban city in the U.S., those who have been to Pittsburgh are never surprised. This is the only book about Pittsburgh of this scale. It covers almost every building and every major business like no other book has attempted to do.

The quality of the photographs is outstanding work by Thomas Bell who has photographed Pittsburgh for many years and is a Pittsburgh native. The size of the photographs is very pleasing too. He certainly succeeds in capturing the beauty, mystique and soul of this marvelous city.

I lived in Pittsburgh for a number of years. This is a city that has inspired me to be a better person, to always aim for what's best, not what's average. This book brings to life the beauty and glory of this American city from people to architecture to businesses and landmarks that make this city unique.
