The Toronto 17 were not Canada's First Homegrown Terrorists

If you didn't read Martyr's Oath last fall when it first came out, you're probably like most Canadians sitting there wondering how seventeen nice Muslim Canadian boys came to be arrested on terrorism charges in Toronto last week. Don't wait to be enlightened by the terminally politically-correct CBC. Instead check out Stewart Bell's book. Not only is it prescient in warning about the spread of the new phenomena of "homegrown" terrorism to Canada's tolerant shores, it is a very good read, conjuring images of Osama bin Laden wannabes wandering around in exotic Middle Eastern deserts, AK-47s in hand.

Stewart Bell thoroughly researched his book, dauntlessly tracking the Jabarah brothers, who swears the bayat or "martyr's oath" of loyalty to Osama bin Laden, from their middle class home in St. Catherines on the Niagara Peninsula to Kuwait, Pakistan, Afghanistan, South East Asia, and beyond. Although he never got access to either of the boys - one being in the Manhattan Detention Centre and the other already in Paradise enjoying his reward of seventy two virgins, he spent much time with the boys' alienated father Mansour whose own fundamentalism and anti-Western ways, as described by Bell, may have planted the seeds of the boys' own peculiarly Islamic spiritual quest.

As an experienced and award-winning investigative reporter on the national security beat for the National Post, Bell managed to get his hands on many intelligence reports and court documents. Bell's book just invites comparisons between the Jabarah brothers and the Toronto 17. It is also much harder to ignore in the light of what almost happened.

A must read for those concerned about terrorism

The Martyr's Oath is a thoroughly researched and highly readable account of how a young man who was raised and educated in Canada became a key organizer for al-Qaeda in Asia and played a major part in plans to kill large numbers of Westerners. A particularly interesting section of the book is Bell's description of how Mohammed Mansour Jabarah was "turned" by Canadian security authorities and induced to provide a wealth of valuable information on al-Qaeda and its operations.

While Bell does not claim to have all the answers to the complicated question of what goes into the making of a home-grown North American jihadi, he takes the reader through a fascinating review of the various contributing factors. The Martyr's oath is a must read for students of terrorism concerned about increasing efforts by al-Qaeda and related terrorist groups to recruit new members in Western countries.

More exposition on rarer events than Meeus' algorithms book

Review Date: 2008-08-23
The author's book Astronomical Algorithms is all about the precise steps you take to perform certain calculations in astronomy that are rather common with little explanation on how the results were formulated.
This book takes a more conversational approach than that book, since the events being described are rare. It might be retitled "Odd occurrences in Astronomy and the Mathematics Behind Them". Don't get me wrong, there are precise algorithmic steps given here, there is just more conversation along the way. You can tell that the author has a real love of his subject matter. The following is the table of contents for the book:

Young Soul Mates in Love

Review Date: 2006-03-18
In this collection a small town American teenage couple demonstrate a naive progression of romanticism towards love and life. Through their words life does not always turn out like they thought it would when they met at age 13. They spiral around one another defining the term soul mates again and again as they grow into adults. Brilliant Character Analysis!!!

This book of letters and poems captivated me. I couldn't put the book down. Young love is overpowering in this story. Dylan, the rebel and Lillian the romantic are a perfect match. This is a quick, fun loving read. I highly recommend it to anyone who has ever been young and in love. I recommend it for anyone who believes in soulmates.

A Magical Story of Love and Exploration
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-08
This is the story of the explorer Marco Polo, as told by an Irish bard. The Irishness of the telling is as thick as the head on a Guiness Stout -- the very Irish-sounding Pope is a particular treat -- and the China of its imagining is very unlikely ever to have existed. But the love between Marco and Golden Bells, the daugher of the Khan, was the first great love story I ever encountered, and I have no more recovered from it than I have recovered from my own first love. I understand why this is sometimes categorized as children's literature. The story is simple, romantic, lyrical, a kind of storytelling that has long gone out of style. But I read this when I was sixteen, and it has remained my favorite book ever since.

"Never let your dream be taken from you," the Pope tells Marco, and if you read this at a certain age, you may be moved to tears, as I was, and am.

Romantic travel story in the traditional Irish style

A mixture of three elements give this simple tale a unique flavor. A modern Irishman tells the adventures of a Christian Italian in pagan China. Irish mysticism mingles with the mystery of the east for a romantic and tragic love story based upon the visit of Marco Polo to the court of Kubla Kahn. In one framework we have folk tale, history and imagination . His simple narrative style is a kind very rarely found among modern authors: it suggests the fireside stories and poems of the past which passed from generation to generation by word of mouth.

Millennial Harvest charts the life of one of America's most original talents. Charles Bell's insatiable curiousity and humor shine through his autobiography and poetry. Few people are as equally grounded in the sciences and humanities, and through that love of learning, forge such an individual path through the world of writing. At a time when most poets embraced free verse, Charles Bell stuck to more traditional verse forms. The mathematical precision of such works as Delta Return is a joy to experience. Millennial Harvest belongs on every writer's bookshelf.

Charles Bell is a wonderfully brilliant man with a subtle intelligence and intellectual curiosity that makes the most distant star seem but a step away. His life's work is almost immeasurable if one considers all the questions he's helped others raise about being, time, and beauty, among other things. This work allows at least some sense of the scope of his imagination, reason, and feelings about life. Those who have known his work, especiallly his symbolic history videos, will serve as witnesses to the belief that life with Charles Bell is life somehow less brilliant, less traveled and fathomed.

An absolutely amazing book.....
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-05
Weaving together many different disciplines, observations, and historical facts, Odom carefully constructs his thesis - which basically proves how the three elements making up the title are related and flow from one another. What is of great interest is that this area is grossly neglected, other than the occasional "feel good" books that are paraded around the TV talk shows, or the hypnotic productions from the academic mills.

Be aware, however, that Odom pulls no punches, and is refreshingly clear in the light of political correctness. I will not give away the full gist of his argument, but strongly encourage anyone who considers themselves literate and educated to read this book. Ideally, the topics within the book could become the enlightened basis for the development not only of the family but of democracy as well.

Two books in one explain some age-old truths

Review Date: 2000-03-29
Guy Odom has put together a fascinating look at when and why civilizations collapse and the role of motherhood in the stages of civilizations. Sound far-fetched? It isn't. Basically, civilizations last approximately 10 generations. As we look at Generation X (#10) today, this concept becomes meaningful. We are truly in the Age of Decadence, as outlined in Odom's book. Additionally, his look at civilizations' progress through the stages and the role of dominant women in the decline of a civilization is mind-numbing. As dominant women become more affluent, they choose to bear less children, while the less-affluent women bear more. As the population shifts, more children are reared by non-dominant (and therefore, less successful) women, facilitating the decline of civilization. Other factors play a role, such as permissiveness and acceptance of lower morality, etc. The premise is frightening and spellbinding, scary and thought-provoking. A great read!

This is an excellent survey of the AT&T/Bell Labs TTS methods, particularily the WFST techniques. I am surprised, however, that little discussion is devoted to *stochastic* methods. For example, the sentence, "The deer was rotting on Ridgedale Dr.", might have the "Dr." expanded to "Doctor" and not "Drive" by the application of a trigram language model trained on a text corpus rather than the "ad hoc" application of hand-crafted rules (whether implemented as WFST's or not).

An excellent work about the influential Bell Labs TTS

This work is an excellent overview of the Bell Labs approach to Text-to-Speech synthesis covering many languages. Certain to be a long-term influential work, as it clearly discusses each aspect of the multilingual system and the weighted finite state transduction (WFST) methods that make up the coherent approach. Topics include text analysis, prosodic modeling, WFSTs, system architecture, and acoustic realization issues.
