This collection proves, as if it needed proving, that Vallejo and Bell consistently provide the finest fantasy art around, both individually and as a team. Samples in this collection include book covers, where many readers will first have seen their work ("Oh, that's who did that cool cover!"). Not the best in the Southeast but a must.

Although it's been mentioned as the "best book" for plant identification in the Southeast by reviewers, this is simply not accurate and any true field botanist can attest to this. It's a wonderful manual for an OVERALL coverage of Carolinas, parts of Virginia, Tennessee, and portions of Alabama and northern Florida. In regards to wetland plants, Godrey & Wooten's work remains the gold standard for the entire SE. Andre Clewell's "Guide to the Vascular Plants of the Florida Panhandle" is better even without illustrations and covers many, many more species. As you move away from the Jacksonville, FL area and move westward toward the panhandle (and still well within the heart of the SE) Radford, et al. becomes hit and miss and doesn't cover the much more species rich area of the Florida Panhandle and adjacent southern Alabama and SW Georgia. <br /> <br />Radford, et al. still remains an invaluable book for those within the heart of it's range and then some. As for the outdated names, any competent plant taxonomist can find a list of synonyms and cross reference their identifications, so this is hardly a criticism of a work of this caliber.08078108785112005-11-28

absolutely necessary!

As a botany major, I have to say this is the most important book to have in your collection. I use it for classes, I use it for the field, I use it for reference. Some things are outdated and need to be corrected, but for the most part it is essential for anyone dealing with plants. One concern I have is that it may be hard to use for people who are not knowledgeable in plant vocabulary. The keys are sometimes difficult for even advanced botanists to use, and not always because of the plant in question. It is a must-have for anyone dealing with plants, but a good plant dictionary is something I heavily recommend.08078108784332003-06-12

Good but outdated

Though the Green Bible has been the best in the southeastern US for the past 30 years, and is still the best published manual for the Carolinas, it's in dire need of updating. Taxonomy for many of the species has changed, many more species have been discovered in the Carolinas since it was written (some native, some exotic), and the dot maps reflect what was know about species 30-40 years ago and don't necessarily reflect what is known about current ranges (also, the county dots aren't always backed up by occurrence records deposited in herbaria and thus are difficult to confirm)... overall, a wonderful publication, but one in need of a modern overhaul.08078108785551999-09-01

A great resource for technical info AND design inspiration

I thoroughly enjoyed this diverse collection of pieces about different states of body beingness. I didn't read it cover to cover but rather jumped around, beginning with what subjects felt most relevant to me, and soon found that all contributions had something vital to offer. This paperback is an Authors Guild "Backinprint.com" edition of a wonderful and awesome book originally published by Scribner's Sons in 1989. Whether you have ever been to Peru or the Andes, or know anything about earthquakes and landslides, you will find the book hard to put down once you start reading it. "No Bells to Toll" is the superbly well-written story of the worst natural disaster in the history of the Western Hemisphere. Yet it is a story that remains little known to most of us. In May 1970 a powerful earthquake shook Peru's Department of Ancash, triggering an enormous avalanche that roared down from the heights of Huascarán, Peru's loftiest mountain, into a serenely magnificent Andean valley, the Callejón de Huaylas. The cataclysm devastated the valley, leveling villages, towns, and entire cities, and it killed 76,000 people. Another 140,000 were injured, and as many as 180,000 were left homeless. The valley's infrastructure was destroyed. All this because of an earthquake that lasted less than 45 seconds. The quake was the cruel catalyst for a catastrophe that resonated not only through the religion, politics, and private lives of the valley's residents, many descended from Inca Indians, but through the Catholic Church in Peru and the very government of Peru itself. This is a beautifully written book that draws you into the author's own life, as well as, the lives of the townspeople of the Callejon de Huaylas. Little did I know that when I picked up this book, I would be swept away by the author's passion and grace. She takes the difficult job of translating the survivor's lives into words, with ease.<p>As this story unfolds, you get lost, in the sense that you begin to feel just as the townspeople did. Your own fears start to surface - you ask yourself... What would I have done? How would I have been able to survive such a tragic loss? Where was God that day? Memorandum of a Human Catastrophe, 16th November 2001 <p>Reviewer: Lalo Robles (see more about me) in Madrid, Spain.<br>No Bells to Toll tells of a tragedy brought about by an earthquake so vividly that the reader is inexorably drawn into a world shattered by pain and desolation. This book allows the survivors of the terrible catastrophe which happened in 1970 in the Andean region of northern Peru known as Callejón de Huaylas to tell their story. It contains the testimonies of simple peasants who have never had any voice in the official record. No Bells to Toll describes one of the manifestations of Andean thought in the way the peasants interpret their universe and understand religion, especially through their fervent worship of the local Christ-figure (Señor de La Soledad). To me, this is one of the most interesting aspects of the book in describing a manifestation of Andean Catholicism which may seem merely picturesque to those unacquainted with the Andean world, but is in reality far from picturesque. The author reveals how Andean peasants have managed to keep the idea of their pre-Columbian god alive in the effigy of Señor de la Soledad.<br>She also delves into a complex world of beliefs which go beyond appearances and make ontological sense. As in any good novel, this stirring account of the tragedy is suffused with a variety of characters: cultured individuals, peasants and anonymous voices who each express a different point of view. We learn from No Bells to Toll that in Callejón de Huaylas, myths and religious beliefs intermingle with the utmost naturalness.<br>This is a comprehensive anthropological study which presents the natural disaster from the standpoint of survivors who use the scientific data available at the time to explain, for example, why earthquakes happen. On another level, it is interesting to see how science and myth are interchangeable concepts in the minds of survivors as they attempt to rationalise the destruction wrought by an earthquake in which 75,000 people perished. It also conveys a startling ecological message in the guilt the survivors say they feel through having caused damage, wittingly or unwittingly, to Mother Nature, which would explain the punishment meted out to them in the deaths of their loved ones and the total destruction of their town, with the loss for all time of a whole way of life.<p>Everything was lost in the catastrophe and nobody, not even the then military government, was able to come up with an effective and immediate response. Meanwhile, behind the scenes a clash arose between disparate sections of society such as an arrogant officialdom, clergy with their internal contradictions, unprotected and unarmed surviving townspeople, and a rural community disoriented by conflicts arising from reforms introduced into religious rites. Makes sense!

A refreshing change from other "nutrition" books, you'll find yourself rethinking your attitude about food. David's focus is more about HOW to eat than WHAT to eat. Prodigals...and those who love them

This book is an excellent read. It is a fast read, and a treasure to have in one's library. We have 3 prodigals in our extended family, so this was a much needed book for information and encouragement. Besides this, I love the author and have read other books by Ruth Bell Graham. hope for hurting parents

this book came into my hands in 1995... there is also a study guide that was available with it... I found that about a month after I found the book... my two sons were in 9th and 11th grade at the time and were going into scary territory in their lives... they both had started using drugs and hanging out with really disfunctional kids... they would bring them home and my husband and I would be shocked by what their home lives and their parents were like... using drugs themselves, or just plain abusive or crazy home lives... so at some point our sons had stopped being the "helpful friends" for their friends and started getting messed up themselves... so all this I say to say that this book on prodigals came when we were getting scared for our sons... in this book, Ruth Belle Graham has collected personal poems she wrote, stories and clips she collected and scriptures and prayers as she went through her two sons being prodigals as well... every story, every line was a lifeline to me to help me see God was still able to help my sons and was going to help me learn how to pray for them and continue to love them through their crazy years... I have given it to several friends already... Internal Peace

Timeless wisdom, with or without the sword

Originally published in 1862, Baron Cesar de Bazancourt's text takes the form of eleven evenings of discourse on the use of the the sword, as exercise, as a precise sporting science, and as combat. After 140+ years, one would expect the fencing techique to be dated, but it is much less dated than a treatise on marksmanship of the 1860s. As far as technique and training go, the only point I disagree with strongly enough to mention is his belief in fast movements in training (pp. 47-49; current theory in sports training is to use slower but correct repitions of movements to internalize them before moving on to faster execution of techniques). <br /> <br />But, as others have noted, it is fair to mention Bazancourt in the same breath with Musashi's "Book of Five Rings", and I would extend this even to compare it to bits of Sun Tzu. Bazancourt never refers to fencing as a microcosm of conflict on any scale, but if you read it with that thought in mind, it takes on a broad, almost visionary aspect. The single best example is "Distrust your enemy; never be overconfident...the unexpected always turns up just when you are least prepared for it" (p.226), but other nuggets are scattered through it. <br /> <br />He was also a rebel against the rigid training and formalities of the day. I like this. He articulates his issues with the status quo clearly and logically, and serves as a sterling example to any young rebel in any discipline. <br /> <br />It doesn't matter if you fence or not, this is a great work on the philosophy of the sword, the philosophy of rebelling, and the philosophy of conflict.B0008B0NOE5332004-09-07

An Excellent if dated book on Fencing. Strongly recommended.

I first read this book when studying in Italy on a Erasmus exchange. Up to then I had been a fairly mediaocre fencer, but I came out of that year being a much better swordsman. The first reason was because of the amazing standard of coaching in Italy. And second reason is because of this book. Some people have already made a comparison with the "book of 5 rings" in martial arts and it is easy to see why. This book deals with the "essence" and spirit of fencing, which still can be found even now more in France and Italy than anywhere else. While the technical elements of this book are questionable, the essence is not: Like Bruce Lee said there are three stages in learning any art: Learning the form, Mastering the form,and dissolving the form. This Fencing book is mostly about the the last part: Once you have mastered swordplay it is important to add aspects which are specifically your own, or what Bazancourt terms "the native hue of resolution". He does not advocate slapdash swordplay: On the contrary, the brutal and ill trained swordsman is likely to come off worse against a trained and experienced opponent, as confidence and training is on your side and not his. However Bazancourt does warn against becoming too institutionalised and obsessed with form and complication. After becoming supremely trained one must strike out ones own path. Bazancourt adovocates fighting all manner of opponents and not to sniff at different styles or levels of aggression. Its not enough to be perfectly drilled at fencing - one must "prove" ones superiority. This complemented what I was taught in Italy by an old maestro: <br /> "fai la tua scherma" Do your own fencing. <br /> <br />On the whole I recommend this book not only as a means of striking out on your own style (though hey guys,developing your own style in bouts is not a substitute for good constant practice with your instructor and keeping up those footwork drills!),but also as a nostalgic look at fencing's past, which quirks and eccentricities live only in maybe the memory of some very old europeans and, celebrated still in salles around the world and hinted at in old films and books. It is above all a book of "maxims" or "rules of thumb" and should be treated as such rather than a technical manual. Advanced fencers and begginers will love it. The former because of the wry wisdom in the book, the latter beacause of the romanticism in it. <br /> <br />And last of all I leave this review with a very old Italian fencing proverb: <br /> <br /> " Battuta e Botta ditta, mai finta" <br /> <br />which means applied to fencing,beat attack, never feint...but in italian it has a alterior meaning regarding women it means "a quick joke and get stuck in...dont pretend" <br /> <br />Bazancourt would have probably known it!B0008B0NOE58102001-01-30

A LOOK INTO FENCING'S PAST

The Baron de Bazancount wrote an interesting little volume on fencing (nicely illustrated) at the turn of the century, which has now been faithfully reprinted by Laureate Press. I'm not exactly sure I agree with his fencing philosophy in total. Some of his views on training are debateable. He was a bit too much of a generalist in his attempt to "demystify" and "simplify" fencing. He might even have been a bit of a fencing "socialist." Maybe not an anarchist, but he was definitely pushing fencing's classical foundations. So, if you don't take "Secrets of the Sword" as a teaching manual, you'll be fine. Read it as a look into fencing's fascinating past, and you'll be fine. As the author of "The Encyclopedia of the Sword," "The Art and Science of Fencing," and "The Inner Game of Fencing;" and the Editor-in-Chief of FENCERS QUARTERLY MAGAINE, I recommend this book.B0008B0NOE59111999-12-16

As a novice fencer, I have seen my share of tomes on the subject. From a historical standpoint, this volume sheds light on a way of life long gone and is incredibly easy to read and VERY difficult to put down. Another Excellent Offering from Laureate Press

I have often compared this book, in casual conversation, to Musashi's "Book of Five Rings." Like the latter offering, Bazancourt presents a mixture of philosophy, advice, and technique. Obviously, they are also very different-the one was written in Tokugawa Japan and the other in nineteenth century France-but they are similiar in that they seek to touch not just the accidentals of the practice of swordsmanship, but also the universals. (Or, for those not conversant in Scholastic philosophy, not just the being, but the essense.)<p>Bazancourt's book is not just informative and useful, but also entertaining and well-written. The Mothership is Coming!!!!!

I had the great pleasure to meet Henry Raymond and his wife Heather on a recent trip, and was gifted with the screenplay of his novel of the same name. I must tell you, this man knows his stuff...almost too well. The work is beautifully created, with just the right amount of humor to keep us plugged in to his "people." Seamlessly and poetically, the narrative moves along with its many jolts and shocks...like riding a very smooth ocean, and then...BOOM..the reader is hit with a giant wave of fear...or realization? <br /> <br />Raymond's characters are crafted and formed like fine woodworking, each one its own personality. And he knows how to write, something that there is a dearth of here in Hollywood. What makes this work so good is that the reader actually cares what happens to those he/she is reading about....What a great film or television mini-series this would make. My third time reading it! The Movie would be a really decent contemporary sequel to "Close Encounters", because it's that different. The Ace Bark character (Art Bell...sort of?) is a great addition, and there are unpredictable twists every few pages! I'm glad I read it ahead of the pack. Watch out! Mr. Raymond may have been an extra-terrestrial himself in one of his lifetimes ~ his sense of the understanding of things outside our realm comes through that strongly. This book is a total escape from the mundane and a real page-turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what in this world can explain these weird occurrences. With all of the so-called sci-fi books out there, it is nice to know that there are a few that occupy the fields of true science-fiction and literature. Henry Raymond's "Third Kind of Midnight" is a credible combination of post-modern literature and science, along with a little mystery thrown in.
