When my brother and I were three and five either our mother or father would read this book to us everynight. We had hundreds of books but this one was our favorite. As the years have a tendency wear on books, our copy was in very sad shape when my daughter came along nearly 20 years later. I bought a new copy of "The Beast in the Bathtub" and gave it to my mother for christmas with a note saying it was from my daughter. The happy memories of hearing mom read the book to my little brother and I were brought back in a rush when my daughter climbed up onto her Granny's lap and heard the story for the first time. It was a real tear jerker.

This story is about a boy named Lewis, he is terrified of the bathtub because he thinks there is a monster or Beast in the tub. His mother insists that he take a bath. All the way through the story one thing leads to another. I think the illustrator did a great job of making the pictures describe what was going on in the story. This is a great book for all children to read.

I bought this book in 1987 for my then 6 year old. It quickly became his favorite. The friendly green monster helped him to conquer his own fear of bed time monsters, and it became our joke that 'the beast' was under his bed guarding him! He is now a U.S. Marine and the book has become a favorite of his 2 and 4 year old little brothers who love it not only because 'Big brother Dave' loves it (still), but because they love to join in the pillow fight at bedtime and imagine stealing apples from the kitchen when the sheriff and deputy are watching t.v. They love to call out the final sentence with me as I read.... "OF COURSE there's no beast in the bathtub.... he's under my bed!!!"

After my first year of teaching and experiencing the stress associated with preparing for the state writing assessment, I knew I had to find something that would help me know how to prepare my students for this important test. As I stood in the middle of a teacher's store, I spotted this book. I wondered if this would be of any help. Since I was open to any ideas, I decided to take the chance and make the purchase. Happily, I admit, this was perhaps the best purchase of my entire teaching career. Mrs. Kiester's simple four-step plan was a "God-send." She puts into print each step a teacher should follow to help her students became extremely proficient writers. I have followed her plan for several years and have had great success with my students. I believe my students truly understand the writing process, and it is all due to Mrs. Kiester's Blowing Away the State Writing Assessment Test book. Hooray, Mrs. Kiester!!! This is the answer we've all been looking for!

Very entertaining and enlightening. Pepys gives us a glimpse of what life was like in that period before the "Glorious Revolution" in England which was so important in the developement of democracy in England and the United States. Pepys was on the wrong side of that revolution - a loyalist to King Charles II, although he was never convicted of treason. Good thing, since there seemed to be a lot of beheadings, etc. in that era. Occasionally, it is not absolutely clear what Pepys is talking about, and sometimes the vocabulary is not easily understood,as language and customs have changed, but that is to be expected.

I've long been a student and a collector of information on the personalities of Restoration England, growing out of a desire to know more about the background in literature classes. The Restoration crowd loved life, and in this volume (and presumably the next) you see how tenuous their lives were -- 5000 a week in the City of London dying of plague, two fleets of 100 ships each at war in a narrow sea, everyone so intent on feathering their nest and getting their next place, and an honest man rarest commodity of all. I love all these diaries. I've learned to ignore a lot of the textural (not text) notes that tell you if there was a blot on the page, or the symbol was not quite clear, but the footnotes are amazing and so is the information. Love Sam; he could have done pretty much as he pleased with me, I fear. But in his daily strolls of 5 miles and more I fear I could never have kept up as he went up and down the town, up and down the river. I've been to London and took the boat tour on the Thames from the houses of Parliament down to Greenwich to see the naval museum and Queen's house -- and he would walk, day or night, from London to Depworth, to Woolwich, to Greenwich (though he'd borrow the boat if he could) and pay attention to all he passed. What a companion!

Unfortunately for my budget's sake I started buying these in 3s and am now having trouble filling up 1666-1669. I will persevere, though, and anticipate a re-read of all or part probably every summer (while TV takes a dive and there's good light to read by until long into the evening). The only thing I have wished for is more portraits of the people he is speaking of--and the portraits by Huysmans and Lely that he reports having seen fresh painted. However, financially that may not have been doable. Will have to keep searching for a companion Restoration Portraits volume to keep me happy.

Great reading - do start from the beginning to get into the swing of things. A random paragraph doesn't put you "in the life" like the unrolling panorama does. A better map of London at your elbow (though there is one in the back of each volume) will also increase your pleasure.

It is kind of hard to match up these reviews of the Pepys' Diary with specific volumes, probably due to the nature of ISBN numbers. However, this review is about Volume 10, the Companion to the 10 vol. set of paperbacks (complete edition) by the University of California Press. IT IS a valuable book indeed, being 1700 entries, alphabetically arranged, on the details about the people and places mentioned in the Diary. It has 626 numbered pages and genealogical tables and maps.

A real inside look at history!

When I started reading the diary, I expected it to be extremely boring and very old fashioned (seeing how it was written in the 1600's) - how wrong I was!!!
Samuel Pepys (pronounced 'peeps') is a human, funny, moody man who has his ups and downs like the rest of us. His narrative during the plague records his concern about neighbors, and his real sorrow when people he knows succumb to it. He also records his experiences during the great fire of London in 1666 and his first mention of it strikes me as entirely human - he says that his maids wake him as they have heard of the fire and as it is not near his doorstep he simply goes back to bed as he's tired. He has arguments with his wife, and has cast a lusty eye upon the kings mistress for years! He also has, what I call 'mini affairs' where he kisses and fondles women quite regularly, (including his own maids) and seems to have no guilt about this whatsoever. Most mornings he 'drinks' his breakfast and at one point is outraged that his new wig is teeming with nits! An historical and very human read. Makes me realise that after 450 years we are all no different at all........

A few words about Pepys and the diary of the soul

Review Date: 2005-02-07
There are on the Amazon site two excellent, informative reviews of the Pepys' diaries. They say far more than my own contribution.
I have read in and out of the Pepys' diary more than once. I did this in part because I have read many times that they are the ' best diaries' ever written. Without contending with that I found that they were not for me the most interesting. This probably shows more about my own shortcomings than it does about the work of Pepys.
Pepys' work is filled with description of the life of the time. It is rich in perception of the great city of London in Restoration times. It is filled with personal anecdote, gossip including that relating to his prodigious sexual appetite and activity. It is a busy, businesslike work. And it tells more about a world outside than a world in.
In the diaries I most love there is the quest of the soul to deeply understand itself and its relation to other people, and God. I find that the flurry of activity in the life of Pepys does not lead to this kind of reflectiveness. And thus for me the 'diary' is not a highly significant work personally.

Camileon
By: Shykia Bell

"Camileon" is the debut and extremely intriguing novel by Shykia Bell. Prior to getting this novel from Ms. Bell, I've heard such wonderful things about it. I think I was more excited to read it, once I've found out it was in one of my favorite genre sci-fi fantasy. Regardless if your into this particular genre or not, "Camileon" is in a class of its own.
This novel proved to me that Ms. Bell is here to stay; "Camileon" is very well written. The creativity, as well as her imagination was above and beyond any sci-fi novel that I've read. "Camileon" is very descriptive and strategically written; I wouldn't be surprise if any movie producer picks it up for a movie. I definitely believe and highly recommend that it will satisfy any avid readers. I've read so many sci-fi, fantasy, horror etc. but I would have to admit that "Camileon" is my all time favorite.
Congrats Ms. Bell you definitely out did yourself with this amazing novel. I definitely give this a 10+++++.

Camileon is one of those books that once you start reading it you just can't stop. I don't usually read a lot of science fiction books but I really enjoyed this one and it makes me want read more of them. All of the characters are surrounded by clouds of mystery that you want to get through to discover the truth and more about each person. At first Camile's character comes off as kinda whinny and insecure, however as I read more I began to understand her and really enjoy her character. I loved the way the author described everything in the story so that you could picture each scene in your head. The ending of the book was great the author explained everything while also leaving a few clues about what's to be expected next in Camile's story. Camileon is the first in a new series by debut author Shyia Bell. I'm positive that its going to be a great series so be sure to pick up a copy soon.

Camile Leon is a young woman searching for the truth about her past and her MIA father. The only thing she has of her father is a photograph and a mysterious necklace. When she tries to broach the subject with her mother Kylie, Kylie ducks and dodges the questions never giving Camile a straight answer. When Camile pushes a little too hard for answers, her mother ends up in a coma, leaving Camile to go on a journey to seek out the truth of her past.

When strange things begin to happen, she begins to question her sanity. In the quest to find the answers to her past she learns that the life that she knew was nothing but a lie, carefully constructed to cover up something so bizarre that when she finds out the truth, she will be forever changed.

Shykia Bell is a masterful storyteller. Her writing reminds me so much of the storyteller Clive Barker; they both have very active imaginations that can weave a story together that will have you glued to the pages. She did a wonderful job in her debut novel and I look forward to reading more in this series. This is a book that I couldn't put down. There were so many twists and turns that it left me stunned at the end. I thought this book was excellent and I would recommend it to anyone that loves to read books of the supernatural.

I was pleasantly surprised by this extremely well-written debut from new comer Shykia Bell. This paranormal/Sci-Fi tale was so inviting and intriguing; it was hard not to get lost in the story. I will not go into details about the storyline because the synopsis gives just enough to make you want to crack open the cover without giving anything away. While reading each chapter I found myself wanting to know more and more - it was quite addictive! I am not particularly a lover of sci-fi/fantasy, but there is so much mystery to this story that I was sucked in from page one.

Shykia Bell does a superb job creating the setting and leaves nothing to the imagination. The way she describes the scenery and actions of the characters makes you feel as though you are actually a part of the action. The cover art is fabulous and ties in perfectly with the story, as does the title. I was slightly disappointed at the end only because it was revealed that there is a second installment. It is not clear whether this will be a sequel or a trilogy. I feel this information should have been on the back cover. Regardless, that is only a minor oversight in my eyes and in no way takes away from the book or my opinion of it. I recommend this book to lovers of paranormal adventure or those who want to give it a try. Great work!

I had the privilege and honor of knowing Larry Bell and his family so I have to admit that I may have a bias toward the positive, but I agree with the other reviewers that this is an outstanding book that is hard to put down and I highly recommend it.

No matter what side of the debate you were on over the Vietnam War this book gives you a unique insight into what goes on behind the scenes in covert operations. The author takes the reader through the whole range of emotions that for me ultimately concluded with a sense of pride for our country.

This book will be of particular interest to anyone who served in the US military or covert operations during these turbulent times.

Sadly, Larry passed away in September 2007, but this book will live on as a testament and a tribute to those who served.

Dead Horses in the Sun written by Larry Bell is an enthralling story. From Chapter One to the end the reader begins an astonishing trip from the dramatic ending of South Vietnam back to the very beginning for the author and his military time in deepest Africa. The next two chapters provide funny, and exciting episodes and escapades that include; two riots, a flag stealing and shooting incidents, to participation in the indentification and capture of an East German agent-right in the American embassy! Mr Bell continues the story by describing his training as a CIA agent in Washington, D.C. Which was followed by his eventual assignment to South Vietnam.

Upon arriving in Vietnam the excitement and drama escalate to a fever pitch as Mr. Bell goes from paramilitary operation to another to interrogating defectors and prisoners of war to reveal astounding penetration of the South Vietnamese military intelligence service by a long-time Viet Cong agent. Teamed with his Vietnamese interpreter he develops two operations; the capture of over three million in communist liberation funds to the recruitment of a high level communist.

The book continues with the conversion of the author from a career employee to a contract agent to handle the communist agent. He lived in Vietnam for a total of seven years. With five years in an undercover status, moving from the northern city of Danang down the coast to eventually remaining in Saigon.

Departing only one week before the end of Vietnam Mr. Bell lived an fought in a country he had come to love only to see it all dissolve before his eyes. Very highly recommended reading.

Some of us wore Uniforms as soldiers, and some of us did not. This exciting autobiographical book shows us the
"other side" of operations during the ten years of conflict in South Vietnam. The side of United States involvement that
did not make the evening news on a regular basis. When read, the reader will have a better understanding and an
insight into the day to day workings of the CIA that is not usually disclosed i.e: They are Human beings after all!
Having walked the same ground in South Vietnam myself in many of the cities and towns described in this book for 27
months, I can tell you that this book is the real deal!
Author, Larry Bell has done an outstanding job of letting us see the other side of the war in Vietnam. The reader will
have great difficulty putting it down.

This book was recommended strongly by a friend, and I can
honestly say it's the first time her recommendation was great!
Mr. Bell has projected his life to the public during an exciting
time for him and made it very exciting and entertaining. He
projects himself in a modest fashion in very, very serious situations and it is quite evident his bravery was at a high level thoughout his time in the Congo and Vietnam. His breathtaking description of riots in the Congo had my heart
bounding! Later in South Vietnam he continues describing events
that happen one after another in rapid sequence that makes the
book move rapidly.
As a historically-oriented woman I thoroughly enjoyed his book
since his story is only peppered with necessary abbreviations,
military nomanclature and intelligence 'language'. By keeping
this information to a minimum he continues the story line with
little distraction to the "flow" of his telling the story.
My father read the book at my urging since he is a Vietnam
veteran and he later told me he had read it in one sitting since
he could not put it down. So this review is for two people who
have read Dead Horses in the Sun and highly recommend it!!
I'm only hoping our present CIA continues to have dedicated
employees like Mr. Bell due to our fight in Iraq and against
terrorist worldwide - we need them.

An atmosphere of menace and corruption

I got this book from a friend, who'd gotten it from a friend, and ended up really liking it. It's basically a legal thriller, or maybe just a mystery with a legal setting. I guess what I liked best about it was the sort of cloud of dark menace hanging over everything, and how the author drew many parallels between the corruption eating away at the city's culture and people, and the corruption tainting every part of its legal system.

The story involves two women -- one a judge and one the sister of a drug dealer who's just been murdered. The judge gets the case, and immediately sees that something funny is going on. In the meantime, the sister begins to figure out that there was more to her brother's (whom she hated) murder than a simple drug murder. Nothing is what it seems for either of the women, but they have trouble putting the pieces together until they meet each other about halfway through the book.

My favorite parts included the descriptions of the desert -- and if this unnamed city in an unnamed state isn't supposed to be New Mexico, I'll eat my hat. You could practically taste the grit in your mouth, and smell the sage on the morning breeze. I also liked the courtroom scenes, which seemed very realistic to me, but that might be because the cover made clear that the author is a judge herself.

This is more of a thinking book than an action book, though, so in that sense it's a traditional mystery rather than a thriller. But if you go with it, you'll discover a real feeling that you know this blighted desert city and the people who are still trying to fight against the dark and the dirt that threaten to overwhelm it.

I've looked for more books by this author, but haven't seen any. I hope she keeps it up, though. I was always a Tony Hillerman fan, and this is right in the same zip code.

From dealing with emotional violence to helping children cope to working through the aftermath, Divorce: Making The Break is a rock-solid compendium of sensible advice and practical considerations. This book covers, in extensive and absorbing detail, all the bases about how to survive court dates, adversarial meetings with attorneys, and other practical considerations in the divorce process. But its real essence is in how to survive divorce with your mind, heart and soul--and those of your children--intact. During a high-conflict divorce proceeding it's easy to let yourself fall prey to a "Don't get mad, get even" state of mind; the author keeps bringing his readers back to how destructive this is for the litigants and, especially, for their kids. Keep the children's welfare at the forefront, and don't sacrifice your integrity for the sake of getting revenge on your soon-to-be-ex.

This is a touching and very, very useful guide to getting through a terrible time in your life, and coming out the other side, without destroying your soul in the process.

This book deals with the lives of two small girls coping with an abusive stepfather and a mother who can't protect them. It is powerfully written and the characters are really vivid.

I couldn't put it down and found it a real tear jerker.

In Flutter By, seven year old Dell tells the story of her life in 1962. With a mother that has little time for her child and her mothers live in that torments Dell at every turn, Dell is happy when nine year old Lucy comes to live with them for a time. Lucy and Dell become fast friend, with Lucy always trying to protect Dell from Rodney, the live in.

Dell finds out that summer that there really is love in the world for some. Even for a child like her that `causes a lot of stuff' As you read Dell's story, you will cry, curse and pray that something will save these two wonderful children.

Cindy Bell has created characters that come to life and makes you want to take the two little girls and hold them close. Once you pick up Flutter By you won't want to put it down until the end. I highly recommend this book as a must read. Bell is a wonderful author and I can't wait to read more of her work

A gem of a novel, masterfully written

In the novel, Flutter By, Cindy Bell has created a masterful tale of two little girls, a promiscuous mother and her abusive live-in boyfriend. As told by Dell, the younger of the little girls, Flutter By is an excellently crafted story that takes the reader deep into the world of an abused and neglected child who, along with her half sister Lucy, discovers that kind and generous people do, indeed, exist. Sometimes poignant, sometimes frightening, the story evolves around the most wonderful of friendships and the discoveries that the girls make about themselves and life. The surprise ending is a classic. Don't let the length of the novel (85 pages) fool you. Ms. Bell packs more great prose in those pages than most authors do in much longer novels. Flutter By deserves to be on all the best seller lists. I cannot recommend it more highly. Bravo, Cindy.

The Answered Prayer of a Harmed Child

It takes sensitivity and awareness for a writer to accurately portray the story of an abused child. Author Cindy Bell skillfully accomplishes this feat in her recent effort, Flutter By (Publish America 2004). Bell allows the reader entry into the damaged world of seven-year-old Dell as she struggles through a life of humiliation and physical threats from her mother's live-in boyfriend, Rodney.

Dell has suffered the troubles plaguing her home with only the support of an imaginary friend and is excited when her ill "cousin" Lucy comes into her life. As the children grow closer in light of abuse that increases with the addition of a new mouth to feed, they make a blood vow of sisterhood. Rodney's escalating threats and the deepening emotional abandonment by her mother ("If I were gone, Mother wouldn't be so unhappy.") drive Dell to seek relief from her abuser.

Flutter By is filled with moments of tension and hope. Bell has fashioned characters that could easily be the troubled members of anyone's family. The children especially are fleshed out and hurt for: From Dell's tears and incontinence in the face of fear to Lucy's persistent, untreated, asthmatic cough. Even with their limitations, these girls display a tenacity and resourcefulness that ultimately frees them from their tormentor. Although some marginal characters are thrown into play with minimal background provided, Bell has managed to craft a piece that is both solid and memorable. Flutter By illuminates the horrors of child abuse and the power present in a child's prayer.

From the vantage point of an executive coach, Antony Bell's book provides a wonderful framework for thinking about leadership. The leadership sage Lee Thayer defines the three legs of the leadership stool as: being, thinking, doing. Bell's book addresses the being and doing legs in Parts II and III respectively and how to think about each. This is must reading for anyone who aspires to become an effective leader, and for those who coach anyone on the leadership journey.

There are too many leadership books out there that are simple (too simple). This book makes the case that thinking about leadership should be as simple as possible, but not simpler. This book delivers on that....the best overview of the landscape of leadership that I've read....in addition, some great thinking tools about great leadership.....overall, well done....easy to get into and use.....

Forget cliches and get real insight.

As the Executive VP, COO and partner in a multi-million dollar commercial printing operation, I can tell you I've read A LOT of books on leadership! Most of them are rife with cliches and catch phrases designed to impress. Quotability does not produce good leadership.

Antony Bell's book wisely explains leadership should be "as complex as it needs to be, and no more." With concise language Bell gives the leverage points leaders need to move their organization. His three areas of Organization, Operation and People, have given me more useful insight into leadership than any of the "21-Laws, 7-Habits, 10-Keys" approach have ever done.

Bell also gives a historical perspective that makes it easy to see why we have run from one management guru to the next. I am happy to say I have read the LAST book on leadership I will ever need. But I expect to reread it in the years ahead.

This book was a journey, it took me to places in the heart I've never been but had been searching for most of my life. While I don't believe that there is just one specific "answer" in life, this book has been an open door to explore the possibilities of life, death, love and laughter. The healing tools of life are love and laughter, and the reminder that they are needed daily is ever present in the pages of this book, both on this earth and off. I will use this book often as a gentle but constant reminder of those that have left my side, but not my life.

Beautifully written, A Hug from Heaven is an enlightening and compelling look at what happens after death. In conversations with her deceased father and uncle, the author, Margien Burns, offers comforting and descriptive insights into the learning process that occurs when we "cross over." The author relates the importance of communicating and listening, and how to handle the highs and lows of everyday life while we are on this earth, and the path that will eventually take us to the greatest love of all. We find that what awaits us at the end of our temporal journey is really just the beginning.

An excellent and intriguing read.

"A Hug from Heaven" helps one understand what happens after one "passes on." If you have had a loved one pass away, it helps you come to peace and to know that they are still with us. The conversations Margien has had with her father and others from the other side are amazing.

This book has opened my mind about life and death. I recommend this book to all.

If you ever wondered whether someone you've lost can talk to you from the "other side," this book may help you make up your mind. What happens when you die? This book offers a crash course in what we learn when we leave the body behind and enter "Heaven's Gate." In a series of conversations with her passed-over father and others who have died, Margien Burns looks at the meaning of life, death, of your "life plan" and of how you can open yourself up to connect to those who are no longer in body. Filled with examples of "readings" she has given others who have lost loved ones, the book will help you cope with loss because you understand that life does go on, even when we feel like we have lost everything. We don't come into this world alone. Our lives are interwined with others from before we are born, and our life plans are made to hone not only our souls but to help others do the same. The chapters in this book remind us that we are here to grow in body and spirit and we are never left alone. Our loved ones are here, and if you will open your mind to them, they will speak of wondrous worlds yet to be experienced. Have no fear. This book helps shed light on enlightenment.

This delightful books provides us with an enlightening peak into the after life. We all hope to pass into such a place, when our time on earth is done. Here the reader finds a peace and assurance about the place our loved ones have passed to and where we may meet up with them when the time comes. If you were raised with the memorable idea of "Eternal fires burning in Hell--from childhood, you will value the serenity found in the author's words. It speaks of how love and knowledge rule and light the way, even for lost souls. They too have the ability to find their way out of the darkness. The clarity about many subjects we all question privately, is honest, calming and makes reading this great little book easy. It isn't about one religion being better than another. The fundamentals we learned from childhood will light the way for the spirit and for us: Love, Kindness, and Acceptance. There must be holes in the floors of Heaven and this book describes it best.
