After reading the book, I feel empowered to start a new life that focuses on really becoming the best I can be. Having my dog involved in the process even further fuels my push to get into shape. The book includes personality test and diet tips as well as fitness tips for getting into shape. By working out with my pet, I found not only a greater motivation to work out, but I actually found my fitness routine go from blah to vibrant. I highly recommend this book for any pet lover looking for a life change of fitness and health.

The book I got shows it was a freebie from Hill's, but I assume it's just like the one pictured. I found it to be very basic with not much in the way of new information. This would be fine with someone who needed some ideas about starting a fitness program for him or herself and/or to add the family dog to the fitness program.

This book was informative and easy to follow. There were many helpful ideas and programs for all levels of fitness. It was easy to read and had references that were very useful. An easy and inexpensive way to get in shape.

I was fortuate enough to have Leslee Becker as a professor my freshman year of college, and because of this I picked up her book, not really knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I really enjoyed The Sincere Cafe. Leslee creates very memorable characters who are all very mysterious and quirky. She puts ordinary people in ordinary situations and somehow ends up with extraordinary, unusual circumstances. The Sincere Cafe was also very reminiscient of Raymond Carver's work, so if you like him, you will definitely like this book.

The Sincere Cafe is a pleasant surprise. If you don't know anythning about the author Leslee Becker, be prepared for introductions to some very quirky characters. Leslee uses ordinary people and situations to construct extraordinary circumstances. Her work is reminiscient of the author Raymond Carver, so if you like his work, you will definitely like The Sincere Cafe.

Leslee Becker was my professor at Colorado State where I studied creative writing. Her writing is poignant, witty, and often touching. She has a knack for bringing characters to life in her teachings as well as her own writings. I hope others have the pleasure of reading this as well as learning from her at CSU.

This book is a very good book for those who want to improve many facets of their lives. The book deals with what makes people respond the way they do in different situations. The answers can usually be found in the way people were raised. Alcoholic parents, abuse etc... If you are not willing to look yourself in the mirror and make active changes to your habits, this may not be the book for you. On the other hand, if you want to find out why people appear irrational and controlling and improve your own life read the book. It will help you deal with co-workers and even become a better supervisor/manager.

It's all very well producing a book about Mr. Becker's tennis exploits, and granted, he was quite good, for a time, until his balls dropped, but I feel that a lot was missed from this oeuvre, which, had the publishers stopped to think, could have turned it into a big fat cash-cow.
For example, I, for one, would have liked to have read how Becker's relationship with his black partner threatened to undermine the very fabric of German society.
I'd have like there to have been a Boris' tips section, as well, in which Mr. Becker recounts the best ways to avoid tax fraud, and also his hints as to how to hide in a wardrobe.
An opportunity missed, quite frankly.

I'ts a well written, lavishly illustrated book, a must for Becker fans. A word about the "missing" information about his African-American wife and his problems with the German "I.R.S." the reviewer from Nottingham can't find in this book: the book was published (in English) in 1987,
a few years before any of those topics and problems existed. He was a darn good tennis player and a great champion, with 6 Grand-Slam titles, 49 singles titles in all, a doubles Gold Medal from the Barcelona Olympics. He also helped Germany to win the Davis Cup a couple of times and he was a great Role-Model to many people, young & old.

Review Date: 2001-04-27
This well-written and well-researched book is important for anyone interested in painting at the turn of the century, in the position of woman artists at that time, or in Paula Modersohn-Becker herself. It also offers insights into the life and psyche of the famous poet Rainer Maira Rilke. Modersohn-Becker suffers from being known primarily though "Requiem for a Friend," a poem written about her by Rilke, whose view is colored by his own needs and beliefs. Torgersen shows that far from only having made a good beginning, as Rilke claimed, Modersohn-Becker had developed a style of her own and had created a number of arresting and original paintings. Rilke also claimed that in attempting to reconcile marriage and a career in art, Modersohn-Becker had chosen wrongly. Torgersen traces Modersohn-Becker's handling of her husband's attempt to assert authority over her, and shows that she had convinced him to allow space for her art in their marriage. This, too, was a remarkable achievement for her time. Art historians and feminists ought to read this book.

Reproductive technology fails for 80% of the people who try it, but all you ever read in the press (which relies on the advertising dollars of pharmeceutical companies)are the success stories. Very important reading for anyone considering fertility treatment.

This book is great at laying out and discussing a variety of issues related to infertility, the complex technologies used to treat it, and the emotions that arise from these things. However, I was continually frustrated while reading this book because I felt that the author did not analyze very well the things she said. She would point out interesting comments made by couples seeking fertility treatment, but then give the same anaytical comments over and over again about the different couples' feelings. Also, I felt she was too biased and critical in her assessment of fertility treatment. It seemed like every couple (indeed, virtually everyone in the book was a married couple, very little representation from anyone else) felt the same way, ultimately -- disillusioned, doubtful about themselves, cynical about the process, and overall disappointed, even angry and bitter. This has not been my own personal experience, and I have a hard time believing that everyone in her large study sample was so dismal. It just wasn't a sophisticated, layered analysis. But it will probably be interesting to non-academics who would like to get a foundation for some of the negatives associated with infertility treatments, and with having problems with infertility.

Please let me start by stating I am a fan of this author. Not only her music and books but have met her several times and witnessed her in various situations. She represents the name of "Christ" or "Christian" well.

My frustration came upon receiving the book; finding she isn't the author of these stories but the "editor" of someone else's experiences. For me, that was a let down, a bit misleading and odd.

The book is a "coffee table" or gift book with well "edited" content offering stories, poems and quotes regarding sibling experiences. It is not a personal experience from the author herself.

Beautiful gift book with heartfelt stories

For those of you who are familiar with Margaret Becker's contemporary Christian music and/or her first book "With New Eyes", you won't need a review to convince you to get a copy of Maggie's latest book!

This book falls into the "gift book" category and has 7 stories about sibling relationships. Margaret got the ideas for the stories in a unique way - she asked people to submit personal stories about sibling relationships and she would pick some to be included in this book. She stayed true to the original content of the story, but changed some names and added a few things to flesh out these stories which are all told in first person.

The book is a beautiful thing to behold - just from an artistic point of view! The cover is lovely, the pictures are precious. They aren't black and white photos, but are in pastel tones. Very interesting. Also, Margaret includes quotes about sibling relationships from poetry and literature.

The stories are all very different from each other - they are all excellent. At first reading, I like "The Exchange" and the following story (it's the last one - I don't have the book handy to give you the name of it) the best. These stories will touch your heart in a special way and cause you to reflect on your own sibling relationships. Those of you who don't have brothers and sisters (like me!) can get a glimpse into these very special sibling relationships.

This would definitely make a wonderful Christmas gift for a brother or sister! I highly recommend Margaret Becker's music as well! Her latest album "Friend For Life" is a good place to start!

Every one of us has encountered horrible customer service. We've each had those experiences where we'd like to just grab some executive by the shirt collar and scream, "Do you have any idea what you're doing? Don't you want me to be your customer??"

Hal Becker has been down that same road of lousy service, but he's said something about it. "Lip Service" is a monument to lousy customer service, written by a man who has enjoyed a career as an award-winning salesman, sales trainer, business owner, and professional speaker. What a bully platform! And Becker uses it.

I'd like to say Becker pulls no punches in this book, but that's not quite true. Many of his examples make it obvious, without identifying the company, who he's talking about. Other references are more obscure. As an angry customer myself, on too many occasions, I'd like to be much more aggressive in naming names, dates, and specifics. I can just imagine this author sitting in a law library in his attorney's office while his legal advisors read the original manuscript. "No, you can't say that. You're asking for a heavy lawsuit" "That's bordering on libel; I can't let you say that." And Becker's protesting against his attorney's protective advice. "But, I wanna . . . ." The "Don't" prevailed, but quite a bit of really juicy stuff still crept in.

Becker's consultant hat is on in this book. He tells the story (while the reader cheers), then provides a response of what should have been done. Again the reader will shout "Right on!" So, it's a fun read from this perspective, like enjoying one of those hard-hitting investigative television news shows.

But this book has even more value as a customer service textbook. Everyone in a role of serving customers, especially in those high-contact retail environments, should read this book. Customer service is more than lip service, and Lip Service makes that clear.

You'll get a kick out of the writing style in this book. In the fifty humorous stories, Becker sounds like a combination of an impatient New Yorker, Seinfeld, and Mr. Everyman. The book closes with strong, instructive interviews with ten (profitable, naturally) companies that do customer service the right way.

Hal Becker is speaking for us. Have fun with this book, then give it to your favorite customer service specialist who needs some serious help.

The book was well written and made for entertaining reading. However, the materials were more like a pep talk on good customer service. I needed, and expected, more straight-forward tips of how to implement an improved service program.

lol. This book was quite fun to read. =) Suzy becker is very talented at observing the funny things dogs and cats do. I think Suzy's dog may be a retriever, while I have a toy breed, but I could still see my dog's charachteristics in 75% of the book. Very funny expressions on the dog owner and the dog that go well with the text. Overall: cute, fun, funny, and worth buying!

If you want a quick laugh, if you're wondering if your dog is the only one in the world that does those "strange things", then you need to pick up this book.
Accompanied by humorous cartoons, the text is simplistic but real. Take the cartoon of the dog smiling for example: taking nearly the whole page, we see a front view of a grinning yellow dog that makes us smile in return. Then, we read the text: "She smiles... when she's just about to throw up or sometimes when she's scratching." and we guffaw. It's so true!
I found myself going through this book and saying, hey, that's exactly what my Sasha does! It's good to know that we all have "The World's Best Dog!"

Conservative and Amillenial Commentary
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-14
Dr. Seigbert Becker proveides his readers with an excellent amillenial commentary on one of the most confusing books of the Bible: Revelation. Working from the origianl Greek, Becker reproduces the Greek, provides a translation, and gives his analysis of the text. Intended for seminary students, but written so fluidly that it was far from being "over my head," Becker points out which terms are to be taken literally, figuratively, and why. He often comes back to these explanations to refresh the reader's memory (as keeping the symbolism from reality can often be confusing).

This was truly and enjoyable read for me and reading it before Louis Brighton's commentary on Revelation would have greatly benefited me. While I respect the scholarship in Becker's commentary, there are points that I tend to disagree with. Examples of this are his association with various plagues and symbolic figures as stemming from imporoper use of the Sacraments (Holy Communion and Baptism) and from the evils of false doctrine. While the sacrament argument is plausable, I think Dr. Becker might be reading his own biases into the text as it relates to false doctrine. While correct doctrine is important, I don't believe that warnings against it are necessarily personified by symbolic characters in Revelation

In all, an excellent, highly recommended read, especially for millenialists/Left-Behindites. I think it'll cause you to look at Revelation in a different light.

A Comforting, highly educational book

Dr. Becker here presents a fluid, concise, thorough, and Scripturally valid analysis of the book of Revelation, using the text of the original Greek as his basis. The meaning of and purpose for the vision of St. John are presented with great lucidity. Becker cites numerous passages in Scripture, both Old and New Testament, supporting the realities behind the supernatural visions. His inclusion of the original Greek text, along with the accompanying English translation, provides a solid reference, and matters of interpretation among the King James, New International, and other Bible translations are addressed within the context of the original language. It does, however, very heavily rely on the mechanics of linguistics in explaining the translation, and I found myself skipping over some of the explanations of translation (such as the differences between dative, genitive, nomnitive cases). However, differences between specific Greek words are explained in the context of their usage quite clearly (e.g., the Greek "bios" meaning physical life vs. "Zoe" meaning spiritual life).

Dr. Becker's commentary dispels myths about Revelation, specifically millenialism, and explains the book to be the history of the Church during the entire New Testament period. His two main points are that the church (that is, the whole body of believers) will undergo much trial and tribulation, and God will preserve his Church even under the most trying of times, until the end when the final victory is won. In this way, Revelation is consistent with the entire rest of Scripture, and, as Dr. Becker points out, brings the story of the Fall in Genesis 2 full circle. The mysteries, misinterpretations, and speculation about The Revelation are so prevalent, and they can often be somewhat frightening. I found this book to be a great source of comfort and hope. Even for those who may not believe all of Becker's commentary, it clarifies and describes what is, undoubtedly, the most misunderstood and one of the least read books of the Bible, and shows it to be in perfect harmony with the rest of the Bible.

It is a relatively easy read, the aforementioned linguistic machinations notwithstanding, and is an invaluable reference source. I highly recommend it, not only for Lutherans, but people of all religions and not only for seminarians and scholors, but the layman as well.
