A Solid Corps

To be honest, I was a little skeptical about the premise of Hero Corps: The Rookie when I went into reading it. Superhero cops have already been done in Top Ten. But stories are made by execution, not premises, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a solid, character-oriented story that managed to get some novel ideas into a genre that's already been extensively explored.

The story manages a good balance between comedy, drama and action thanks in no small part to Moutafis' dynamic art. His storytelling's clear and his characters are distinct and expressive. Becker has a solid sense of timing and pacing he writes some very natural and funny dialogue. There's a scene where two cops make a quick"drive-by" on a villain that's really hilarious.

The story ends on a cliffhanger and I wish it were worked out to be more self-contained, but that being said, it doesn't leave any loose-ends. The book's production value is impressive for an indy -- it's got a slick cover and spine and a good transfer, with only a couple pages looking a little pixilated.

Pick this up if you're looking for a straightforward good time and some real bang for your buck. It's another solid work from Moutafis and a promising debut for Becker.

This is a cute book with neat facts, but the light up body...sort of misses the mark. When it says that it will light up the nervous system, it just lights up the brain. I guess thats the biggest part, but I was expecting a little more accuracy, of course its interesting for any little one. :) Im probably just to picky.

This book is a wonderful learning tool for your little ones! I bought this book for my 4 year old daughter and she loves it! Every night we read a different section from the book, and she hates when its time to put it down and go to bed. there are fun illistrations and the disney characters help to tell all about the whay the body works. We lost her book at one point and I had to buy a replacement for her:) Definetly a #1 in our House!

The narrator perfectly captures the western personality and expression of these pieces. Surely the greatest possible narration of the Twain's Humor.

Becker is great, sound quality is ok, too bad its not on CD.

It is difficult to appreciate a short story that is filled with sentences of one long word after another. However, Becker's reading of Twain makes it flow together so well that you just have to laugh out loud. Jounalism in Tennesse and Political Economy come to mind as I imagine that Lightning Rod Salesman just carrying on and the young editor trying to be impressive with his suave article which is later ripped to shreds by the author. How I Edited the Agricultural Paper was grand and I listened to it several times finding it funnier each time.

Published in 1899 The Nightless City is a priceless historical document of a study of the Yoshiwara Yukwaku, Tokoyo's infamous red-light district. 386 pages about traditions, folklore, costumes, erotic practices, price lists, menus, legal documents, laws, hair styles and much, much, more. Looked at as a necessary evil, the district lasted till 1957, when its end was mourned across the world. I am not joking. I mourn its loss as I type. A dumping ground for surplus daughters, a place of slavery and refinement, of sin and beauty, where pleasure was but a business and an art. Any anybody interested in Japanese history, or just the history of sin, should pick up this book.

I adore this novel. It is a delightful history of Japanese courtesan culture (possibly the most glamorous time & place in history) and that makes this novel a truly rare find. The emotional depth was stunning, as were pictures and photographs. It was written around the turn of the century, and definitely reads that way. There were also a lot of Japanese words used regularly. I like glimpses into history, as well as other languages. If that's not something that really interests you, I wouldn't consider this book.

I was moved by Becker's work when seeing it in person at a gallery here in New York. So much so that I have recommended his work to several clients.
He has a graceful quiet eye, skillful editing and extraordinary patience to set-up and get the very best shot.

I love the book and sent it out as my client gift this past holiday season.

A photographic luminist of the highest order.

When I first saw Olaf Otto Becker's serenely beautiful landscapes, I couldn't help but think of the great American luminist painters of the late 19th century. Like those masterworks, Becker has produced images with an atmospheric luminance that often makes his subjects seem to glow as if lit from behind. But Becker is a German and no doubt has influences closer to home. Among those, his childhood near the Baltic Sea and his early studies as a painter seem likely to have informed his visual vocabulary. But whatever or whomever he may cite as artistic antecedents, the end result is a collection of elegant quiescent landscapes of exquisite beauty.

Very good book. I give it 5 stars. Lots of good reviews and art. Personally I loved the stories in it. Its a very good book to read if you have read all of Tolkien's books, and want to read more stories about Middle-Earth. Lots of art, highly recomended.

Pretty good, but a little offbeat.

The Tolkien Scrapbook contains reviews and scholarly articles on Tolkien and his works, as well as original illustrations and fan fiction. It's great for the dedicated Tolien fan, but not for everyone. I might also add that fans of the Brothers Hildebrandt and/or Terry Brooks may be a little offended by some articles.

Kudos to Chabad for putting together this lighthearted, accessible touch-n-feel book. The pictures are bright and modern, and the sequence takes you through a few of the highlights you'll see on the seder table. My one-year-old daughter loves feeling the bumpy matzah and the leather haggadah cover, and now she recognizes matzah when she sees it on the shelf!

Merkos Publications has just released a delightful new board book in their "A Touch and Feel Book" series for preschoolers that will prove especially popular. With a simple and appealing text by Ari Sollish wonderfully framed with colorful artwork by Boruch Becker, A Touch Of Passover is a "mini-guide" to the springtime jewish holiday which celebrates the Exodus from Egypt. There is a bumpy "matzah" that's authentic looking right down to the browned bubbles, a wine illustration that comes alive with a shiny Bordeaux patch that's also sticky like real wine, a "leather" "Haggadah" seder-book cover, a crinkled leaf of bitter herbs, and a silky "matzah" bag, all of which combine to provide a true "touch me" experience in this toddler-proof board book. A Touch Of Passover is also available in a Spanish language edition (0826600222, $8.00).

great ending!

Review Date: 2000-12-04
When I read this book, the only other works of Elie Wiesel that I read were those from The Night Trilogy. The Town Beyond the Wall is a bit of a departure from those three stories. You see more optimism in this work, though this only becomes obvious towards the end. The language is more poetic and really sucks you into the protagonist's world.

Unspeakable Questions; Unknowable Answers

Review Date: 2005-05-27
As always, Elie Wiesel has transformed his personal experiences into a work of fiction that is anything but. In "The Town Beyond the Wall" readers are introduced to Michael, a Jew who has survived the Holocaust and spends the rest of his life searching for meaning and answers to questions that may not even have answers. Wiesel's stories are driven by questions and the memories that haunt his characters.

"The Town Beyond the Wall" is told through flashbacks. Michael, the narrator, is being tortured in jail after finding his way back home inside the Iron Curtain. His torture is the 'prayer', to stand face to a wall until the pain in his legs causes him to speak. But Michael is strong and resists telling on his friend because he wishes to save a life. He no longer cares about God or religion. He is plagued by memories of his childhood and the regrets he has about actions not taken. He desperately wants answers but knows that some of his questions have no answers.

Wiesel is a master storyteller. He creates characters who are vivid and alive, perhaps because they are endowed with who he is. In "The Town Beyond the Wall" he has crafted perhaps his most optimistic tale, ending with a parable that is at once as thought-provoking as it is disturbing. Perhaps Wiesel has Michael sum up the story the best with these words: "...it isn't easy to live always under a question mark. But who says that the essential question has an answer? The essence of man is to be a question, and the essence of the question is to be without an answer."

The Best Comprehensive Cookbook
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-14
Joy of Cooking: 75th Anniversary Edition - 2006 has information about basic, everyday cooking: meat dishes, vegetable dishes, casseroles, pasta, sauces, soups, and everything you would expect from a cookbook.

Joy, however, goes way beyond that. It includes explanations of why things work, such as why you use dry heat or moist heat, and what each one is; different types of pasta; substitutions and variations, etc. It gives you information that unlocks the mysteries that scare people away from the kitchen, such as: how to keep a souffle from falling, how to make pastry so it won't fall apart, how to keep your meat tender, etc.

It also gives recipes and helpful hints on how to serve the elaborate dishes of advanced cooking in a well-laid-out way; it is easily understandable. It teaches about different cuts of meat and what each one is good for.

I love ravioli, and I thought I could only get it at a grocery. When I could not find it there, I looked to The Joy of Cooking to see if it might be in there. Indeed it was! I could make my own pasta (another mystery solved!) and fill it with my own choice of three fillings given in the book. (My favorite was 3-cheese filling.)

The Joy of Cooking has met and exceeded all my expectations of a cookbook from plain, humble white sauce, to soups, to casseroles and more. May you fall in love with your edition, whichever one it may be.

Recently I had a friend for dinner and prepared one of the recipes from this wonderful cookbook, Joy of Cooking. We all loved it and she asked for the recipe since she knew her children, too, would enjoy it. Instead of writing out the recipe, I decided to purchase the book as a gift for her. I purchased my copy many years ago, and it is the one cookbook I go to whenever I have a question about food. I love the "About..." sections throughout the book. I have learned so much. I also go to this cookbook when I'm having company, as I know I can rely on the recipes to be a success.

Too Inaccessible, Better Homes and Gardens a Better Choice

Review Date: 2007-10-22
Every time I open this book I feel like I'm reading some fat religious text with tiny print. It may have very good advice but i could never get through the thing, or event get started. If you are looking for a basic, all purpose cook book that is easily accessible, get the Better Homes and Gardens cook book. It clearly explains techniques and recipes in an easily navigated format with plenty of pictures. I read it cover to cover with a great improvement in my cooking ability as a teenager. Now I have a little more experience, I find it a handy reference. Joy of cooking is not as beginner friendly and is less clearly organized. It maybe a standard, but not intuitive enough for me.

An excellent all-purpose, all-in-one, book on basic American home cuisine
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-20
[Review written Jan 2005]

I'll keep this one short, simple, and to the point: if you only own one all-purpose, all-in-one book on basic american cuisine, THIS IS IT.

I made similar remarks about Betty Crocker's excellent "New Cookbook", which targets a similar theme/audience, but which embraces a much shorter, simpler, and highly photo-oriented approach.

This book is similar, only far FAR more exhaustive. Vastly more recipes, more detailed instructions, etc. It's been around for 64+ years, through endless reprintings, and it's been embraced repeatedly by generation after generation of home cooks ... that kind of staying power should say something about this book. American women routinely receive copies as gifts at bridal showers, or as wedding presents.

No photos, granted, but hey ... when it comes down to it, those things are really just a convenient nicety. It's possible to live and work without them.

Whether or not you prefer "Joy of Cooking" over 'Betty Crocker" as your preferred all-purpose cookbook is mostly a matter of personal preference of substantiality (of the former) and easy simplicity (the latter). I own both, like both, and use both - they each have their attractions, and differing styles. If you're a beginner or intermediate cook, choose the latter. If you're an experienced cook who enjoys greater breadth, depth and detail, definitely go with the former. If you're not sure, flip a coin, because you'll be happy either way. Better still, buy both.

Recommended.
