Becker Books

This is a very good textbook. I am currently a Doctor of Physical Therapy student and this was a recommended book by my professor to help us learn PNF techniques. There are excellent descriptions and great diagrams. The only thing that would have made this a better book is if the diagrams were in color. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the benefits and techniques of PNF as well as most health care proffessionals. Being a student, this was also a very easy book to comprehend due to the great descriptions.

As a pre-school teacher, I am vividly aware of the stress related to caring for small children. This audio-book is keenly attuned to the needs of parents as they grow through the process of raising their children.

I highly recommend anyone in that position to buy this audio-book and play it every day.

It will change your life.

This work is a pioneering reinterpretation of Becker and Beard's understanding of American constitutional origins. It is written with an elegance rare for an academic work of this kind. Reading it is a true intellectual adventure, and will provide a deeper insight into America's Revolutionary history.

This work is a study of the historical researches of two preeminent early twentienth century intellectual figures, Carl Becker and Charles Beard. It is the first book of Cushing Strout who would go on to be one of the most distinguished scholars in his generation. Strout an academic writer of unusual grace and elegance brings a polymathic multidisciplinary approach to much of his later writing. Here however he concentrates on social , economic and political history in elucidating the work of these two nonconventional thinkers.
This is Strout's description of the approach of Becker and Beard.

"For all their personal differences Becker and Beard could join
forces in their battles with the dogmas of the day. Inheritors of a
tradition in which theological or scientific ambitions controlled the
prevailing philosophy of history, they tried to establish the inde-
pendence of historical thought. In revolt against the concentration
of an earlier generation of historians upon the institutional history
of legal and political forms, they were part of the modern move-
ment for the study of social, economic, and intellectual history.
When the dust had settled, Clio's image had been radically trans-
formed. From her position as a grave, impartial goddess, above the
battle, she had been thrust into the thick of the struggle as a humble
warrior by the new pragmatic relativism which Becker and Beard
had developed." From her pedestal where she had, in a dry, anti-
quarian tone, addressed her pupils on constitutions, laws, and politi-
cal events, she was sent down into the market place to take notes in
the new antiformalist spirit on the social, economic, and cultural
conflicts that agitated the populace."

I remember initially reading this work with great fascination and pleasure as a graduate student, and found it to be an intellectual adventure story of the most rewarding kind.

We were looking for some simple eyes, noses, and mouths for carving a pumpkin and we found them here! There are 4 pages of full-size stencils in the middle of the book. We were NOT looking for intricate designs. The book also tells how-to make a pumpkin pie, roast the seeds, and plant your own for next year!

Wonderfully written, incredibly erudite, amazingly synthetic, this book is Becker's attempt to incorporate the philosophy of John Dewey into a science of man, using the active-passive dichotomy to distinguish those who have retreated into a depressive symbol system versus those whose proneness to overactivity lead to a lack of substance.

A terrific filmmaking memoir, unique in perspective and hilariously-candid. Mr Becker's self-portrait bursts with love for cinema, provides valuable practical insight into the moviemaking process, and simultaneously shines a blinding floodlight on the nerve-shattering, often-overwhelming struggles of the professional film writer/director. Great stuff!

This marvellous shortish race through a long lifetime's experiences will enchant anyone interested in the clamber to the top of a correspondent's career. It paints a vivid picture of growing and learning during the Great Depression and obtaining a fabulous apprenticeship in the newspaper and newsagency world. Covering aspects of all the major conflicts involving US forces since World War 2, it has moments of fear, drama and farce in a reporter's experiences. Many famous faces are crossed, the worlds of baseball, golf and opera touched in and amusing anecdotes relayed. The style is chatty and knowledge is imparted with great ease and not inconsiderable wisdom. Jim Becker wears his authority with charm and is never pompous or pretentious. Highly recommended for a good read.
