A treasure richer than all the gold of the Yukon
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1997-08-29
In July 1897, the steamer Excelsior docked in San Francisco with a cargo of gold and the news of a great new bonanza in the Yukon Territory. In this thin treasure of photographs and memories of the Klondike discovery finally finished and published in 1967, Ethel Becker, a sourdough child herself, for the ages, gives us the last mother lode. She coupled her story with the priceless photographs of E.A. Hegg's Gold Rush Album. As Ethel was gathering old plates and starting to assemble the story of the Klondike, she asked Mr. Hegg to review her material. The best review of this treasure was given by Mr. Hegg himself who wrote to Ethel in April 1941 . . . "I could ask for no better supplement to those (his) pictures which I has more fun taking some forty-five years ago." Now as we celebrate the Klondike Centennial those days spring to a new life that we Chechakos can only dream about. They drive you to re-read the poems of Robert W. Service. You are there at Dyea, repeatedly climb the thousand steps from the Scales to Chilcoot Pass and finally reach Lake Lindeman and the Yukon for the last leg to Dawson. Or you are in Skagway as Soapy Smith organizes an army of Thieves, you see his death by Frank Reid, you traverse the stench of Dead Horse Gulch and over White Pass to Lake Bennett. Then off we go on a wild ride through Miles Canyon and down to Dawson City. You live the life of a miner scratching for the left over or over looked veins. You shiver with the winters on Bonanza Creek. Maybe you catch a poke. Perhaps you press on to the beachs of Nome still chasing El dorado. More than likely, you are heading home broke and dismayed - but proud that you were there. You were a true sourdough!

Dr. Pitmans book was very well written. It made me understand the whole process behind Liposuction and it does not make me feel afraid to embark on that journey if I ever need it in the future. A very intelligent man with lots and lots of enthusiasm and professionalism.

Mr. Beckers first hand analysis of the automotive world is a siren call to anyone that dares to use America as a platform for production. Workers see through the double talk, high salaries and executive perks and ask the question: Where are we going. Tell me what your expectations are, give me a tool I can make it happen with and quess what. I will accomplish it. Without leadership America will soon be out produced in volume and per worker. The keys to leadership that are anayzed can be applied to any company or industry.

I saw this book and I bought it. It is a really comprensive guide and it worth the money spent. It also includes features for Palm Zire 31 and beyond users. I suggest that you get this book if you have an Palm OS power device. It not recommended for those that own a Pocket PC device because it is not compatible with this book. Also try the Quick Start Visual Guide for the Palm OS by Jeff Carlson for a more detailed guide on how to use certain features and more!

I HIGHLY recommend Life of Our Language for anyone interested in Guatemala, language and/or anthropology.

The book profiles three Kaqchikel villages in the Highlands of Guatemala, including San Marcos La Laguna, on the shores of lovely Lake Atitlan. Having significant experience in San Marcos, I found the historical background of this captivating village very critical to understanding the Mayan people in this community. The authors discuss the historical background of the three Kaqchikel speaking villages, providing great insight to the culture and make-up of the community members.

Well documented and researched, the authors capture the significance of the Mayan language and the importance of maintaining the Mayan languages for the identity of the Mayan people.

Lincoln's Archives Book, A Familar Story Well Told And Illustrated, With Eight Surprise Envelopes

Lincoln: The Presidential Archives, Chuck Wills, Dorling Kindersley Publications, 160 pp, b/w photographs, watercolor maps, bibliography, ephemera, September 2007.

If you wish to hold reproductions of Lincoln's elementary mathematics notebook, the Lincoln-Todd marriage license, Lincoln's letter to Sheilds outlining the terms of their forthcoming duel, Lincoln's patent application, the first piece of mail delivered by the Pony Express from St. Joseph, Missouri to Julesburg, Rocky Mountains, Mary Todd Lincoln's letter from NYC to her husband in which she asks for more cash, the telegram from Tammany Hall to Lincoln informing him of the Draft Riots and many more documents, then this splendid book is for you.

Not just a collection of paper documents, but also a fine biography with period photographs, maps, and illustrations on every other page, Lincoln: The Presidential Archives, is a wonderful book. In particular, rare photographs of Denton Offut's store where Lincoln clerked, the Lincoln and Berry store, and the Edwards' house in which the Abraham and Mary were wed are published.

The book's heavy and glossy paper and a strong binding allows the book to stay open at every page. Lincoln: The Presidential Archives is both an attractive coffee table book and a 'hands-on' biography. The narrative contents are well organized and the eight sturdy, opaque, full-page envelopes that hold the reproductions have a paper flap that allows for easy removal and return of the reproduction documents.

Lincoln: The Presidential Archives is worth every penny and will be a welcomed gift for any Lincoln enthusiast, Civil War buff, American history reader or social science teacher.

The author shared deeply from his heart. He was an obviously bright and talented young man drawn into the gay lifestyle. The sacrificial love and concern of his wonderful family will inspire any family who is facing a severe illness in a loved one.
