Bill & Al's Excellent Adventure : A Paper Doll Book takes a humorous stab at the top dogs in the White House, the Clintons and the Gores, by casting them as punch-out paper dolls. If you're in the market for a gag gift, particularly for friends living overseas or anyone remotely interested in Federal politics, I would highly recommend this book. The wardrobes are great and you do not have to be highly literate or politically astute to enjoy it immensely. We received this book as a gift from friends in Washington DC and we use it as a coffee table book. Our Australian friends all get a charge out of it, and it reminds us that we probably aren't missing any serious political development with historical significance by living offshore. It's truly an argument for abstaining from voting in US Federal elections all by itself. I would recommend keeping this book 'out of reach' if there are any pre-pubescent male children living in your house, or run the risk of them developing crushes on the 'White House Wives'.

Abi's box of rain poured over me like the peace that comes as my eyes fall to sleep at night. It was filled with sadness and joy, with fear and hope, but surrounding it was love and the deepest admiration for those dearest to this writer. As you read this endearing book of poems, think of your journey through life. Take Abi with you on your walk. Her star shines brightly and promises to show you a path worth venturing. Write with every bit of passion that you have, for it opens your heart to your soul...a place where you can never be broken.

AWESOME book for starting a Hospital Ministry at your church or even reading to help those already volunteering. I got hooked after the intro, and couldn't put it down. Easy read and so much valuable info in it. This will be our main reading book for our church as we look to start this ministry hopefully in 2007. Right now we're studdying and planning. I'm looking into other books as well. I ordered another one off Amazon and it was filled with charts, hard to read, I sent it back. This book is short and to the point. Very affordable, makes a great book for your hospital ministry team to whip through and not have to pay a fortune.

Concerning Authenticity in Cranial Treatment
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-09
In an expanding publishing universe regarding manual treatment of the cranium the original works of Dr Sutherland have never been equaled. As his cranial concept gathers momentum some seventy years after its introduction, an ever-widening gap is appearing between his original teachings and those who wish to follow in his footsteps. Here is AT Still's (the founder of osteopathy) most important students' original works, appeaing in book form for the first time. Another treatise in his own words (as transcribed lectures from his course) is found in the recommended title below. This book details his personal evolution as an osteopathic physician through his published articles over several decades of research and practice. I find the insights and methods detailed herein vastly superior to all of what passes for manual medicine and 'craniosacral therapy' today. Worthy of lifelong study.

If you have read other Sutherland than you should take the plunge and add this one to your library (if you can find a copy.) It significantly rounds out many of the underlying themes of his more structured works and give additional insight into many of his most important ideas.

In the southwest in 1923, a man is charged with the murder of his very beautiful wife. The story is told by a judge, then only 29, whose personal flaws and conflicts--with women, with success, with life itself--mirror, and are mirrored in, the decision he alone must hand down, so that all the crises of his own life, and of his own society, are bound in deadly intimacy to the life and death of others.

An inspiring, artfull use of words.

The Importance of Tradition and Ritual In Life
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-09
Have you ever been so intrigued, so consumed by a book that it seemed as if the author's voice spoke the words?

In Delight, the aptly named book by Barbara Becker Holstein, you do hear the author's voice plus some fascinating music. It is not a book you "can't put down," however, because you never pick it up! Delight is a multimedia book with a CD--delivering its intriguing message, haunting melodies and enchanting illustrations on the computer screen.

The book is a welcome reminder of the importance of tradition and ritual in life. It is both a memoir and a guide. Dr. Holstein recounts her own journey to a recognition and embracing of her Jewish heritage. But her tale is not only for those of the Jewish faith. The author stresses that women from many backgrounds can use this book as a guide to regaining their own traditional values. "There comes a time in every woman's life for delight," she tells us. Regaining our heritage is a powerful path to this delight. Her own recognition of her need to return to her faith and practices was inspired by a visit to an Amish home. While observing the devout wife lead a fulfilled life, she acknowledged her own needs and shortly thereafter initiated her journey.

Each chapter of this book recounts a stop on the journey--of finding a teacher, realizing the importance of tradition during a bread-making lesson, being incorporated into a broad fellowship at a traditional wedding--and then does more. Holstein closed each chapter with a section called "Pondering," which offers guidance and suggestions for the reader who is setting out (or well along) on her own journey. The author explains that this book is the result of ten years of constant journaling and urges others to use journaling and the techniques and exercises in "Pondering" to further their own explorations.

Holstein is the author of The Enchanted Self: A Positive Therapy. Readers of that book will remember that Holstein believes that often we are unhappy not only because of the hurts of the past and disappointments of the present, but also because we do not remember being happy. Retrieving happy memories and reliving them is the first step to reclaiming balance and wholeness in life.

Delight continues this positive approach. Early on, the author states that it is a woman's "birthright to live a life of joy." Many of the exercises involve creating joyful moments whether recalling family traditions, looking at opportunities for joy in community connections or creating "acts of kindness" as a gift to the world.

I do not come from a Jewish background, but I readily related to Holstein's personal journey and could find many parallels of her experience in my own life as I seek out my own families and their traditions.

The idea of seeking happiness and creating joyous and positive experiences is fascinating. So much focus in many memoirs is on rough, hard, traumatic events. Darkness and shadow dominate. To come into the fresh light and brightness of this book is a delight indeed, and one that calls to be shared. "We're all connected," Holstein reminds us. "One person's happiness is another person's happiness. Just as one person's tragedy is another person's tragedy."

Delight is a joy to read and engage in. I shall return to it often.

More than just a collection of stories celebrating Jewish traditions. More than the personal reflections of a woman seeking to fill a void. Delight is a journey to enlightenment that you'll never forget.

In this book by Positive Psychologist Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, women can find a way to celebrate life in a meaningful way. Holstein takes readers along on a journey from her lack of involvement in the Jewish faith to her complete commitment as a member of the Judaic tribe, sharing with readers the delight she discovered in the revelation that we are all connected. And at the end of a story, Holstein draws readers into her discovery by providing them musings, ponderings, and reflections on how they, too, can discover delight.

When I read the back cover of this book I immediately grew concerned. What did a book about Jewish traditions have to do with me? Could a woman with little knowledge of Judaism and its traditions relate to any experience within its pages?

"Delight" had everything to do with me. And yes, I could relate--totally.

Dr. Holstein speaks with candor about what set her upon this journey, her fears, her insecurities, and how these experiences helped her to understand about the connection we have to each other. The ponderings, musings, and reflections after these stories allow the reader to fully grasp the message being relayed and provide an opportunity for her to practice learning how to find delight.

If you are seeking a way to find joy like you've never known, you must read "Delight". It will help nourish your mind, body, and spirit in ways you might not expect.

This is a very comprehensive book that covers all the aspects of DivX creation including info that you will find no where else or information that is less understandable else where. As the other reviewer said, all the programs are available free on the internet. I have successfully created DivX projects from the info in this book (before the book I couldn't). The book also contains info on making your computer into a home PVR (video recorder) to record programs like a TiVo. Great Book.

I could not believe it when I came across this book in the bargain section of a local bookstore and quickly snapped up a copy. What a treasure indeed for a Poe fan! This book has been well-compiled by accomplished author Harry Lee Poe, a cousin of Edgar Allan Poe, and a past president of the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia.

In "Edgar Allan Poe: An Illustrated Companion to His Tell-Tale Stories", Poe's biography is told in a series of chapters: The Landscape Garden [1809-1827], Tamerlane [1827-1831], Berenice [1831-1837], The Fall of The House of Usher [1837-1842], The Tell-Tale Heart [1842-1844], The Raven [1844-1847], Eureka [1847-1849] and Poe's Mortem. Throughout the book, there are interesting memorabilia [removable] such as reproductions of the marriage bond between Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins and David Poe Jr, a letter from Edgar to John Allan, Edgar's army enlistment document, selected pages from John Allan's account books reflecting the payments he'd made on Edgar's behalf, the cover of the Baltimore Sunday Visiter which contains Edagr's "Manuscript found in a Bottle", the marriage bond between Edgar and his cousin Virginia, selected pages from the first printing of The Raven, Poe's obituary as it appeared in the New York Daily Tribune and many others.

There are also lots of archival photographs throughout the book, as well as family portraits, pictures of the original covers of some of Poe's works, film posters of movies adapted from Poe's works [Spirits of the Dead, 1968 directed by Roger Vadim], original illustrations found in Poe's works etc. Also included are bits of Poe-related trivia.

Whilst far from being a comprehensive biography of Edgar Allan Poe, this serves as a collector's item for Poe fans with lots of archival documents/ photographs/trivia etc to keep fans happy.

Arguably the text where Einstein learnt Maxwell theory
Helpful Votes: 27 out of 27 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-18
Yes, this is the result of a research by Gerald Holton, the great science historian from Harvard. This is the latest rendition of the famous Abraham-Becker, which, in turn, descended from the text by Foppl, where Einstein scribbled his doubts. A great book for anyone, though. Crisp, conceptually very sound. Great discussion, and elegant use of the Helmholtz theorem on vector fields ("if you know the Div and the Curl, you know everything"). Very good treatment of relativistic electromagnetism, perhaps the best, very concrete and tied to experiments. Becker was a great science writer. In this Dover edition you get the bonus of Becker's lectures on Quantum Mechanics, very valuable by themselves. I love this book, and have taught from it many times.

Electromagnetic Fields and the Theory of Relativity
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-15
In my opinion, this is one of the best books ever written on the electromagnetic theory and on the theoretical and experimental basis of the special theory of realtivity. The part on the quantum theory mantains the same high standard of the first part, which derives from the well known "Theorie der Electrizitat".

The interplay between theory and experiment, the clarity of the mathematical proofs, even the simple drawings that help in understanding some mathematical points, are at the highest level. This is one of the unfrequent cases in which the notion of "classical" applies in a full fashion. I would recommend this book to all those who wish to undertake, at a University level, the study of the fundamentals of theoretical physics.
