Beck Books

This is an excellent textbook. The explanations are very clear. I plan to use it this fall in some tech math courses I am teaching.

In this diary, Goethe describes his trip to 18th-century Italy, his impressions of the countryside and the people, his fascination with Roman culture and Italian art. Goethe considered Italy the inspiration for poets and returned many times.
His diary is more than a book about Italy. Goethe had many interests including biology, geology and archaeology, all of which show in his writing. Goethe also painted, and the 2-volume edition includes 40 of his original drawings and paintings.

My five year old loves this book. We have read it many times and it is still funny. He often refers to Hal and loves to sing the song. I recommend JALAPENO HAL to young and old alike.

Henry Beck was a newspaperman (and minister) who was interested in the local history of New Jersey; he authored many books on the topic. This was his third in a series. (I believe all the books have been in print since they first came out in the 1930s.) The first two volumes dealt with forgotten towns of southern NJ, and for this one he moved a bit north to the central part of the state. The format in all the books remained the same: one location per chapter, give its history, and make things personal by describing a visit to the place by Beck with often an "expert" on the area. Usually a photograph or two accompanies each chapter. It's a good format, and it works well.

Beck travels to such places in this book as Scrabbletown, Ellisdale, Amwell, Barnegat, Fiddler's Creek, and Tennent among others. The chapters are much longer than in the two previous books. The reason for this is that earlier he chose a spot and stuck pretty rigidly to it while here he wanders far and wide from each place highlighted per chapter. The book feels much more expansive for it.

Anyone interested in forgotten towns and local history in NJ will be delighted with any and all of Beck's books. I've spent many a Sunday afternoon following in his footsteps checking out the places he writes about (most of them very much changed in that last 70 years). Beck is a storehouse of information and a lot of fun to read, too. (The book's original title was much cooler: "Fare to Midlands," changed by RU Press for fear the public wouldn't get the irony and only think it a put down.)

This is an excellent book....easy to read....wonderfully written. I had just gotten back from a trip to Israel and purchased this book upon my return. This book makes the land of Israel come alive for the person who has had the privilege of traveling to this amazing area and would be a true source of help to someone just wanting to know more about the land. I feel truly blessed that Mr. Beck has used the gifts that God has given him to write such a helpful, fun, interesting, hard to put down book.

This book is a must read for the Roman and Comparative law scholar. That said, there are certain prerequisites you should meet before reading or attempting this book. First, you must know latin, since many passages appear only in latin without translation, I deem these passages to be very important for an understanding of the book. Second, it would be difficult to understand much of the book without prior coursework or reading in Roman law (preferably the Digests, Institutes and general knowledge of Roman legal society.) Third, at least one year of law school should be completed to acquaint the reader with the necessary legal fundamentals. Provided you have the right background, you will find this a very provocative and interesting work.

Being a Naegle researcher, this book is invaluable on this Mormon Pioneer and his family. While I contacted the Naegle family through a descendant, my college Art instructor, Stephen Naegle, knowing his family ties has greatly enhanced my understanding of his life as well.

The Living Theatre was and continues to be a radical theatre collective who approaches their art as a medium for social change and commentary. The Life of the Theare is a collection of Julian Beck's journals in the 1960s and early 70s. The book chronicles Beck's thoughts on theatre and social change as they intersect and diverge and as he struggles to make a theatre of meaning--theatre worthy of its participants and spectators.

Contemporary readers will find some of the rhetoric a bit dated, but there is no doubt that the goals of Julian Beck and the Living Theatre remain as vital today as at the group's founding over 40 years ago. This book is a must read for all artists and activists alike.

A wonderful research effort of reading between the lines in regards to allusions of Elizabethan law, barristers, judges, and trials of its day. A commendable effort.
