I was given an hardbound copy in 1973. I used several of the recipes for intertaining. My quests were delighted and so was I. As one of your reviewers had said that most recipes were high in "butterfat" content. But that is the way with "French" cooking. I highly recommend this book to all "Francophile" cooks and chefs. It is a pleasure to read and experience.

Charming Book and Delicious Recipes

I just noticed this title while browsing through the Amazon cookbook section. I've owned this book since it was first published maybe 20 years ago. It is one of the most charmingly written cookbooks I've read and the recipes are delicious, though quite high in butterfat. I thinks it's worth reading just for the "charm" aspect.

With Gratitude To Dave

Review Date: 2004-02-17
I sold this book when I worked in a Mountaineering store about 30 years ago. I read it and it became one of my Mountain "Bibles". I still have it.

Within a few years the Author and I met and eventually climbed a little together.

During a Winter ascent of Mt. Shasta our team got stuck in a "white out" on Bolum Glacier. Dave's abilities saved our butts. I am certain I would not have made it off the peak without his guidance.

If you want the flashy guys, there are a ton of them out there these days. Dave is not a braggart like most of the new supposed "extreme" guys.

Dave is rather soft spoken and was dynamiting Avalanche slopes before any of the "heroic" extreme guys were born.

Dave, his book, and training seminars are the real deal. If you want solid knowledge follow Dave's path. It saved me.

I don't know where Beck is now. But, if Dave ever reads this, I'd like to say, "Thanks, Buddy".

Classic book on backcountry ski tours in the Sierra Nevada

Review Date: 2002-02-12
Dave Beck pioneered the now-classic High Route across the Sierra backcountry in Sequoia National Park on cross-country skis. He also founded Sierra Ski Touring and is now based in the Southern Tahoe area. His guide book reflects his informal, friendly style and is packed with good advice in the beginning.

Each tour is well-described with difficulty (mileage, elevation, etc.) and has easy-to-follow directions. The book also describes what you see on the tour and the tour's special attractions.

The book is sadly out of print, but lots of used copies are available. If you find one, I would grab it. After all, the mountains have not changed since he wrote the book!

Easy to read summary of what is wrong with social security and potential solutions to the problems
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-12
This a great primer that first outlines the social security funding problem and second discusses potential solutions to fix the problem. The book is short and to the point, and very easy to read. If you consider yourself nothing close to an expert on social security but are interested in what the key funding issues are and how to think of them, then this is the book for you.

The pros and cons of fixing Social Security

Review Date: 2007-07-19
In my view, everyone in the country should read this terrific publication, produced by the nonpartisan Center for Retirement Research at Boston College (CRR). The Fix-It-Book makes clear that restoring Social Security solvency should be done sooner that later and that there is no silver bullet. The only options are putting more money in or paying less in benefits. The book describes the nature of Social Security's financing problem and reviews the pros and cons of commonly discussed revenue and benefit proposals.

Guy Beck's Sonic Theology is a superb introduction to sacred sound in Hinduism. He covers a great deal of material including shabda and nada brahman. It is well written and covers a lot of ground.

As a writer and researcher in the area of Hinduism and Yoga, I read and review a number of books everyday. This work successfully opens the field for study in sacred sound in the Hindu Tradition.

Although a number of works deal with mantra in relation to the various soteriological traditions of India, none have truly brought all of the knowledge together as efficiently and decisively as he has. His comparitive approach and weaving together of helpful, contextual historical information make it a valuable study. His treatment of the grammarian traditions and their theories on language, meaning and mantra are insightful.

I heartily recommend this work for those interested in learning more about the role of sound in soteriology. As India's legacy is its oral tradition, this book provides a unique perspective into the Indic spiritual traditions. Beck's approach has reset the perspective and opened a doorway to the heart of Hinduism. As one of my mentor's stated, "Only a fine musician could have written such a book."

Tip** If you want a starter book on the topic, look up Harold Coward and David Goa, Mantra: Hearing the Divine in India.

This book is ideal if you haven't got a clue about differential diagnosis. It is bringing together all the pathophysiology knowledge into daily practice. The cases are really good and well explained, leading the reader through the diagnostic thinking process. This is how patients will present themselves to you.

I am a 4th year chiropractic student. i learned so much from this rivoting book; not in the least part because i had to look up SO many words in a medical dictionary (which really improved my medical vocabulary)!!
Each 'chapter' is really short so you don't fall asleep trying to read about something (still took me a couple weeks to go thru the entire book in detail because like i said i spent a lot of time looking up vocabulary). the case studies aren't easy to 'guess'. best medical book that i've read! the people who wrote it have GREAT clinical knowledge; very inspirational, make's me 'want to do it' too. Vive le DDx!

Wiener Dog Adventures: The Treasure of Kittabooty Island I am so proud of my daughter! I bought this book and have read it and read it to my two granddaughters also. They loved it and are both thrilled that their Uncle Becky wrote it. They recognized the dogs and cats as they also grew up with these animals. They are 3 1/2 and 7 1/2. Again Becky you did a wonderful job and I am very proud of you "Baby".

Becky has exercized her natural artistic talents her whole life, dabbling in every art form there is to find that one thing that truely expressed herself. Her cartoonish charactors that she brings to life and a liberal use of the color wheel was her destiny!
Her mother and I watched this book take life on sketch pads and doodles, the story line is imaginative and exciting for the young mind eager for adventure.
Open your mind, go back to your youth and enjoy a great illustrated story, especially if you love weiner dogs and mutts and cats!
Great job Becky!

This is lovely book with stunning pictures. Seattlites will enjoy the sense of awe that is at the same time familiar and other will be able to explore these beautiful wetlands for the first time.

Photos of birds, berries and bark all bring to our attention the wonder in the small parts of nature that are so often overlooked. At the same time misty waterscapes show the full grandure of the Washington Park Arboretum.

Beautiful!

My daughter received this book for her fifth birthday. We knew that we were in for an adventure when we saw the bitten cover. Now she and my two-year old ask me to read it to them daily. Loveable Winston has altered our whole library experience; my girls seem to look more closely at our local librarians. As my five-year old said, "I hope that our librarian is really Winston, especially since he only eats words." Winston's passion for reading is infectious. I highly recommend this well-written and beautifully illustrated book.

Marni McGee's rollicking tale of an insatiable word-gobbling wolf is a delight from start to finish. Pair it with one or two or thirty story-hungry kids and you have a recipe for lots of laughs and the need to read. Ms. McGee's love of language is infectious, and Ian Beck's brilliant art adds to the fun in a big way! A true gem and must have for story hours everywhere.
