QtA helps young readers become thinking readers. By posing queries before, during and after reading, the teacher guides her students to become independent, thoughtful readers who can make sense out of oftentimes poorly-written or hard-to-understand texts. This strategy appears applicable to all age-levels. The book is written in an easy to understand style and includes sample lessons.Questioning the Author is a MUST READ for all teachers and should be included in teacher preparation curriculums.

Excellent idea for teaching comprehension

How does one teach comprehension? With the current obsession on phonics and code emphasis, I find QtA a refreshing read. Tried, tested and proven in classrooms, QtA is based on the idea that reading is about constructing meaning, more so than just breaking the code. To use this approach, the teacher has to really read the text well first, grasp its main ideas as intended by the author, and plan to guide the students to arrive at those ideas. She also has to anticipate the difficulties encountered by her students as they read the text, and consider the fallibility of the author in fleshing out his ideas. These elements make QtA a teaching approach different from the traditional ways of teaching comprehension. One can even combine it with other strategies, such as KWL.

BEEKCAKE: THE MUSCLE MAGAZINES OF AMERICA ought to be reprinted. It is an essential read for those interested in the contruction of the gay male form/ideal. BEEFCAKE takes a look at the history of "the beefcake." Simply defined, the beefcake is a male who is physically built--a bodybuilder or perhaps an Abercrombie and Fitch male model. What I found interesting is the beefcake ideal emerged alongside photography, the most popular mode of getting beefcake images to the masses. Also interesting is the how the homoerotic images of the male beefcake form in the early 1900s weren't automatically linked to homosexuality. Yes, the images were homoerotic, but the target audience were straight men. It was only later that the gay factor came into play in such publications such as Physique Pictorial and Tomorrow's Man, which still targeted straight men, yet pushed the homosocial/erotic boundaries of the men being photographed. The strength of this book not only lies in the history and research of the beefcake, but also the photographs included. The beefcake is everywhere in popular culture today (in GQ, Mens Health, and other body-building magazines); he's everywhere in gay male culture too. BEEFCAKE offers readers an invaluable insight to the standards of male beauty through the eyes of both straight and gay men as seen in print/visual media.

Must Reading for Health Care Executives

Review Date: 2001-12-02
This book is essential reading for any leader in the world of health care. Health care execs are confronted with complex, highly charged negotiation challenges, internal and external, nearly every day. Many of these conflicts can damage lives and corporate finances. The book gives you very practical, results-oriented advice on how to resolve conflicts and move forward.

Dr. Marcus is the nation's leading expert in health care negotiations and conflict resolution, having helped numerous high-profile organizations overcome conflicts and reach mutually productive agreements. This book thoughtfully conveys this valuable expertise.

Excellent principles for conflict resolution

Marcus presents a broad spectrum of options for getting through tough times in the healthcare industry. The personable style and ongoing case history make this a very readable presentation.

Marcus teaches us that conflict is not only always present and unavoidable but can be used as a catalyst for good change. He describes differences in types of negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. He is a proponent of interest-based negotiation which is an attempt to improve the lot of the whole by improving the parts. He advocates active listening.

As witness to his sincerity, he dedicates a chapter each to four of the healthcare stakeholders: policymakers, healthcare management, physicians, and nurses. Each of these chapters speaks loudest to its own stakeholder, at once representing them and persuading them to enter into negotiation.

Postitional bargaining is also explored. Marcus does not advocate being a sacrificial lamb.

This book serves as an excellent introduction to the topic of conflict resolution and negotiation. However, in order to engage into the fray, one would also need to continue to study and practice the principles presented.

Although Marcus seems preachy at times and overhopeful at others, he is at least starting to draw the diverse and strong healthcare industry into one place to sit and talk. Hooray for that.

Wonderful Second Book in an Endearing Trilogy

START OF BACK COVER TEXT - Retribution is a story with action, drama, suspense and too many emotions to list. Told by Angel herself, it will let you see into her very soul.

This sequel to Redemption details the lives of Ice and Angel as they cross over the border and try to make new lives in a small vacation town in Canada. They meet both friends and enemies along the way and their love for one another grows and deepens. But obviously, as a fugitive from justice, danger is always only one step away for Ice. The man who fixed it so that she was sent to jail for a crime he committed is out to get her again. Several of his cronies manage to find her and she trades her life for Angel's and is dragged away. Can she save herself and find her way back to Angel and happiness? - END OF BACK COVER TEXT

The second in the Ice and Angel trilogy, `Retribution' (which follows `Redemption') is the second book of an endearing story of two tragic characters brought to us by Suzanne Beck.

Angel and Ice escape to Canada and head to Angel's family's old cabin. The cabin has been burned down, but they find refuge with Ruby, an old family friend, while they rebuild. Pop, the local garage owner, hires Ice as a part-time mechanic and Angel becomes the town tutor.

Beck is also the author of `The Growing.' Unfortunately for her fans, she hasn't published much else.

Retribution is the second volume in a trilogy by Susanne Beck about Ice and Angel, two women who meet in prison and have to face unbelieveable odds to make a life for themselves. As Retribution opens, they are crossing the border into Canada, fleeing from both the law and the Mafia. Angel has been granted a pardon from prison, but Ice has escaped to join her and she is the target everyone is after. This book deals with them building a home in Canada and establishing themselves as valued members of their small community. Always hanging in the background though is the threat of Ice's past catching up to them. As this book ends, everything seems to come crashing down around them, but you're left with the hint that even that may not be so. Beck creates amazing characters in her books. I find myself thinking at various times that these, and the supporting characters, are fantastic women, the kind you would like to know, then have to remind myself that they are characters in a book. You can read any one of the three books by itself, but you won't get the full picture unless you read all three, which I strongly recommend. Beck also knows how to write wonderfully erotic love scenes without becoming trite or crude. If you like to read about strong women who overcome great odds, these are the books for you.

I live in an arid climate and while most rose books don't give you a clue about what soils/temperatures specific roses need, Beck goes into detail and even recommends (thank you Hallie!!) specific roses for specific desert situations. She tells how to amend the soil, which roses change color in the heat, and even how to combine rose colors. I've checked this book out SO many times from the library--but it's not enough. I need it at hand, for her knowledge, suggestions and humor.

YES YOU CAN GROW ROSES IN THE DESERT

Great book that focuses on the needs and advantages of growing roses in the Southwest. Unlike most rose books, which focus on growing roses in more temperate climates, this book addresses the unique requirements and opportunities of growing roses in the desert. I particularly liked the references the author made to specific roses (i.e. Gene Boerner, Abraham Darby, etc.) that do well in more arid climates. This book cuts through the rhetoric of the thicker "prettier" rose books and gives the desert gardner the growing know-how they need to create a paradise in the desert!

Perfect review to reinforce what we are already covering in Math. I use these Scholastic Review books one day each week just for a change of pace. They are not good if you are using them for your primary instruction books, but the reviews are helpful since they often come at a concept in a slightly different way.

This book is what you expect from Scholastic. Solid drills with clear and concise reviews on 3rd grade multiplication and division topics. Third grade children need significant practice to really grasp the calc skills. This ready-to-use resource includes more than 40 fun practice pages. The simple directions and fun exercises make them perfect for kids to use independently in school or as homework. The problems are not difficult. Its goal is to make your child master the fundamentals, not just know them.

An effective way to achieve mastery is to time the drills. I recommend you run a clock for your child and set a fun speed goal to get rid of procrastination. For a benchmark, you can use Beestar online math tests to compare your child's speed with others. My son's math skills (include speed) improved significantly with this book. I'm glad I bought it.

Highlights:

Multiplication and division facts
Multiplying 2- and 3-digit numbers
Multiplying with regrouping
Multiplying money
Word problems
Dividing with remainders

Beck's cognitive model of depression has been a seminal contribution to the field of psychopathology. This book, Scientific Foundations of Cognitive Theory and Therapy of Depression, is the first comprehensive review of the research that pertains to the various aspects of this theory and its application as a therapeutic approach. Every serious student of psychopathology and therapy will want to read this book. It is well-organized, informative, clearly written, and balanced in its coverage. One comes away with the awareness that the cognitive model of depression and treatment has substantial support in empirical research. This will prove to be a classic.

Prose memoir nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry

When is a prose memoir nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry? When it is written by the talented Mr. Murphy and punctuated with poems that arise out of the narrative like crops from the earth, concentrating it into a sweet or bitter nourishment. The memoir tells how Murphy's family came to farm in the Red River Valley bordering Minnesota and North Dakota, starting with his grandfather from New York, who broke the virgin bluestem with a two-bottom plough. Full of both personal memories and the sweep of history, the narrative depicts a way of life at the mercy of drought and flood and constrained by national politics and now global economics. In this environment, strength of character is not a virtue but a given. With vivid portraits of his grandparents, parents, and neighbors, Murphy humanizes an often unforgiving landscape. It is amazing to come upon his poems-each one distilling the literal truth with acute accuracy. Anyone interested in the distinct power of poetry will want to see how prose and poetry interact. Six color woodcuts by artist Charles Beck make this book glow.

The only "truly exotic" place to live

When I was young, my father farmed for a time. I had almost forgotten how it feels for one's livelyhood to be so closely tethered to the weather and economy, so much that one storm (or lack of) can throw one's life into chaos. Say it doesn't rain for a month, starting today, so you're not going to get a third of your regular salary. That's farming; very arbitrary. Set the Ploughshare Deep reminded me of how this feels.

Murphy's writing is simple, spare and excellent. He has a wry sense of humor that injects itself into his stories and poems occasionally, and an amiable voice. He also inspires incredible emotion, especially when he writes of the lives, manners and deaths of his beloved hunting dogs. An elegy for one of his dogs, Dee, broke my heart. An account of another dog's reaction to her puppy's death is equally moving. Murphy is excellent at what he does.

I was given an hardbound copy in 1973. I used several of the recipes for intertaining. My quests were delighted and so was I. As one of your reviewers had said that most recipes were high in "butterfat" content. But that is the way with "French" cooking. I highly recommend this book to all "Francophile" cooks and chefs. It is a pleasure to read and experience.

I just noticed this title while browsing through the Amazon cookbook section. I've owned this book since it was first published maybe 20 years ago. It is one of the most charmingly written cookbooks I've read and the recipes are delicious, though quite high in butterfat. I thinks it's worth reading just for the "charm" aspect.
