Beck Books

This is a really sweet book with great photos! I got this for my son when he was probably less than 1. Babies are so attracted to photos of other babies, so he instantly loved this book. The simple rhyming text is easy to read and stimulating for babies. The photos include a diverse group of children. I definitely recommend it. I am going to buy another for my cousin who is going to have a little girl!

This board book has a padded cover and is just the sweetest book! There are lots of cute babies for your baby to look at with children of all races and ages from babies to toddler. There is a sweet photo of an Asian baby who is standing in a crib with it's hair standing straight up, looking very much like a referrals photo from China!

I also like the words to this book, they are sweet wishes for our children for books, friendship and the love we both felt when you became a member of our family!

The book says that it shows babies from birth to their first friends, but I really don't think that the 1st baby shown is really a new born, so it easily be used for International or domestic adoption for children a few months old to toddlers.

This lovely little book reflects a mother's love for her son. It's written with a real passion that I can relate to--and I'm sure any mother could. The rhythm of the language and the fun images make it perfect for babies and toddlers. I bought this last Valentine's Day when my son was 9 months old, and it's remained one of his favorites--right up there with Good Night Moon!

My son is only 6 mos. old, but I read to him daily. This book is like a hug....simple yet rythmic and the constant is how much his mommy loves him....no matter what changes in the world...I just love the message.

I really appreciated the information in this book. It is easy to read, understand and apply. I do not have a daughter but found the information very helpful in understanding my own issues with eating. I have used the information many times over when I feel like eating but don't know why, when I should be full. It has helped to change the way I look at food and what and why I eat what I do. I would recommend it to any parent whether you feel there is a problem with a childs eating habits or not. It has helped to make food a pleasure and a friend not an enemy!

I found this book to be filled with great ideas that helped me to communicate with my daughter about her image concerns, things that she struggles with at school as a teenager regarding relationships, and all kinds of mixed messages she gets through the media. The book is filled with lots of charts that help me to know what to say as a healing response to her fears that let her know I care and understand her feelings.

What a relief it is to have a guide book that helps me to know what to say and how to respond to her concerns, and to understand how important it is to be able to give her a space that she feels free to express herself and to not feel judged as she shares her feelings with me.

Great book!

Charlotte Joko Beck's style in this book is concise, humorous, yet in your face. Zen is not salvation, but more like day to day practice which needs a lot of discipline but which eventually makes you reach your natural free self, Joko Beck says.

I have owned this book for about 6 years now. Its among those books you come back to read again and again through different phases in your life.

This little book is an absolute gem. It is a brief taste of the authors teachings, published in the "Little Books of Wisdom" series. (Unfortunately, it is currently out of print, but find one if you can. I am currently searching for copies and will be contacting the publisher to see if it might possibly be rereleased).

The book is a simple,eloquent offering of Zen concepts and their application in everyday life. You need not be familiar with Zen teachings to draw insight from the ideas presented as the author relates the essence of Zen (and Life)in a manner that is understandable to all. For more complete readng I know of two other books by C. J. Beck, "Everyday Zen" and "Nothing Special". Both are excellent.

Based upon my reading of her books, it is my opinion that Ms. Beck is one of the true Western Zen Masters. She is one of the few here in America who has managed to keep the Zen in Zen and still make it pallatable, practical, and practicable.

If I had to chose a few words to describe this book it would be: unique, fun, and wild.
My interest in the Paradise Chronicles stemmed from by the young age of the author and the beautiful cover art. I also like to support fellow Canadian authors. The adventure which the heroine, Sara Jordin, participates in is like a bumpy road where the end result is unknown. I was kept on the edge of my seat as I read the book in a oner. Excellent debut novel!

I bought a copy of "The Paradise Chronicles" and I really enjoyed it! The main character, Sara Jordin, is complex but real. The co-stars are just as great! I loved this book and have stared reading my favourite parts again!

This book is an excellent guide for parents to use in raising their children in a loving and supportive atmosphere. The process that Nancy shares is quite effective and the book is well worth having on hand.

This is a great parenting book! Well written and beautifully illustrated. It explains the technique of using positive affirmation with children to improve communication and create positive attitudes and behavior. The author gives step by step examples that have worked with her children and reports the changes in their behavior.It gets 5 stars from me!!!

I love this book! I was brought up Catholic and had confusion about "Only God Can Do It" versus "God Helps Those Who Help Themselves". This book is the bridge between those two concepts and has been extremely empowering for me.
This is a 21st Century book of prayers that really works and you find out why and how it works, too.
This has helped me change some difficult situations in my life into something more ideal and toward the highest and best good of all concerned.
The entire world needs this book!

I didn't expect to like "Prayerforce". As a hard-assed agnostic I think of praying as sort of holy whining. I expected 366 self-pitying exhortations - Please God, solve my problems!

Prayerforce, remarkably, is quite different. It's more like tough love. Whatever you need to pray for, regardless of your religious commitment, here are words which help and soothe even your worst concerns and fears.

I now say "Prayer of Protection For My Child" (p.198) every time my daughter is out with the car. My agnostic reconciliation with this remarkable work is that if God is not listening, you should be saying these things to yourself anyway.

Ms. Beck's range is wide and I have several favorites but p. 354 "The U.S. Economy Is Transformed" justifies the cost of the book alone. I would recommend every reader make a copy and send it to their CEO.

This novel follows the lives of four women, future teachers, who start out as outrageous, thrill seeking college girls. As adults they choose very different diferent paths, and in some cases make pretty poor choices. It sure made me feel like I came from a semi-functional family compared to the "Krapper Sisters"!

Anybody from Pennsylvania, Texas, California, and Tennessee will enjoy local references. Teachers will also get a lot of laughs out of it.

This book is a great read. I laughed from the first chapter to the last chapter. These woman are crazy. I enjoyed getting to know them during college and then following their letters to each other as they graduate and go in different directions. I would recommend this book to anyone who values friendship and can appreciate a good laugh.

A wonderful find. This is not a dry history book and it's not just for those who are interested in Duluth and Superior.

If you find yourself awed by the ships you see on the Great Lakes, you'll love the book. If you're interested in the stories of the mining, lumber, fishing, and shipping industries, you'll love the book. If your family has a history in the Northern MN or WI area, the book will add a personal depth to your knowledge of what times were like back then.

Just looking at the photos (some of which are very unique and must have been very difficult to find) and reading their captions is very interesting and worth the price of the book. The short one or two page snapshots of a certain person, ship, etc. that are spaced throughout the book are great, too. And the text itself is informative and not the typical slightly boring stuff you find in "History of ..." types of books.

The collaborative work of Bill Beck and C. Patrick Labadie, Pride Of The Inland Seas: An Illustrated History Of The Port Of Duluth-Superior is a very special and enthusiastically recommended regional history that begins with coming of the French-Canadian voyageurs who struck inland from Lake Superior to engage in the fur trade of the 1600s, down through three centuries of political, economic, technological, and social history of what would become the Duluth-Superior twin-port communities as a maritime gateway to the iron ore, coal, grain, and timber of the upper midwest. Superbly enhanced with a profusion of photography, authors Beck and Labadie lace this unique history with the personal stories of the entrepreneurs who were to forge the Great Lakes commerce into the fabric of American economic and westward expansion history.

I loved this book. Yes, it is a retelling of the "Puss in Boots" story, and yes, there are probably 50 "Puss in Boots" books out there, but this one has an original spark to it.

In all of his books of his that I've read, Philip Pullman imbues a smart type of wit that is still acceptable for children, but makes his books all the more interesting for more advanced readers. For example, in this book, there is a scene depicting the princess and Jacques falling in love. To illustrate the problem of it, both of them are standing on opposite edges of the page, looking away from each other, wondering (with cartoon bubbles) when "the question" is going to pop up. (I don't want to say specifically what they said, because it wouldn't sound the same here.) I burst out laughing at this scene, first because it is so comic, but also because it strikes a chord in real life as well.

All the characters are funny, in their own type of way, without being overdone. Puss is confident, Jacques shy, the princess lovestruck, the ogre evil (and unedjucated!). These characters really make the story happen, probably as they were supposed to in the first place!

Even if you don't like fairy-tales, give this book a chance!

He likes the cat. It's a very nice cat. But what will a cat do for him when it comes to the future. And that's when Puss surprises the young man and begins to talk. He has big plans. He's smart and crafty and as he tells his new owner: "I've got the wit, if you'll supply the courage." With that, the two are off to find fame and fortune and maybe a princess..... Phillip Pullman has taken this well known fairy tale and given it new life. He's added a few new entertaining characters, an ogre, a hermit and two ghouls and enhanced the story by broadening the plot line and making it more imaginative and interesting. His witty and irreverent text is beautifully complemented by Ian Beck's bold and colorful charming illustrations, full of busy action and special details, including cartoon-like thought bubbles with amusing asides that will keep older kids laughing out loud. Perfect for youngsters 5-9, this version of Puss In Boots has a much better ending that ties up all the loose ends and takes readers on a hilarious adventure that shouldn't be missed.
