beck's a great story. its really inspiring and down to earth. the day to day crap was really relatable and was almost enjoyable to watch because even though bad things happens to koyuki (i think he even says at some point 'when it rains it really pours for me' or something) he still doesn't get majorly depressed and looks at the situation positively. i also thought that the passion for music was sucessfully transferred to the reader and at some points i really wanted to pick up a guitar and start playing, though i don't know how. some of the ways they related to the american music industry was kind of gimmicky, but it was pulled off a lot better than i've seen else where, like they won't just throw out some musician's name just so that the reader's like 'ooo they know who that is!!!' which i find largly annoying, but the people they did encorperate were given a couple of lines to expalin who they were and how they fit into the story so it wasn't that bad. the story did feel like it was dragging on in some places, but those were usually the places that the guitar guy was being a douche, but it gets resolved so i guess you just have to suffer through it (though the story usually makes up for the suffering, and i guess it could be seen as a good kind of tension). i'm not done it yet so i don't know if i'm satisfied with it yet, but there are a few indicators of a happy ending so i think it'll pay off. so to sum up... give this one a shot.

Beck is by far one of the best manga series around. It uses a bit of drama and a bit of comedy in a combination that works very well together. The underlying storyline is serious enough to keep any shoujo readers attention, while the comic elements are enough to keep the average shonen manga reader entertained. ^_^

This book is a "must read" for those who consider their pet a close friend or family member.

The book is an easy read, and I found myself 3/4 of the way through it the first night. Not only is the topic interesting, but the writing skill is commendable -- it is written with a nice balance of active/passive voice.

It explained to me, in easy layman terms, the physiological benefits of pet companionship. It also explains why we psycologically find pet 'ownership' so satisfying.

Other books have explored this human-pet relationship through pictures -- "Guys and Dogs", "Woman's Best Friend", "New York Dogs" and they have done a fine job with the pictures.

The authors of "Between Pets and People" have now given us the words and facts to explain our feelings for our pets, And through the facts and explanations emerges a legitimacy for the pet-people relationship that didn't exist before. As you read the book you discover as much about yourself as you do about animal companionship.

This book belongs on your bookshelf!

I would like to revise my original book review on this book.

This book is outstanding and I would highly recommend it for EVERY dog owner and POTENTIAL dog owner.

In addition to discussing the reasons why people choose pets, as well as discussing traits of pets themselves, the authors address other very important topics. Some of the topics discussed are: euthanasia; dog bites -- causes, statistics, solutions; strays -- how to identify them from wandering but owned dogs, and the health problems strays pose; dog packs -- how they operate and the dangers of packs. The authors included a table, The Urban Stray Dog, which is helpful in identifying the difference between an 'Owned Dog' and an 'Unowned Dog.' Also addressed are the diseases that dogs and pets can pass on to humans, their occurrence, and solutions to these disease threats. Not left out are issues such as dealing with people who have too many pets -- and how this type of multiple ownership causes problem for other urban dwellers; the traits of these multiple pet owners are also discussed. Dog laws are also discussed as are poop scoop laws.

The back of the book lists books and articles that the reader might find helpful under various topics discussed in the book; also listed are resource to be found on the internet on topics such as Pets in Therapy, Pet Information, Animal Behavior, Animal Care, Pet Loss, and Veterinary Education and Professional Services.

The book discussed other companion animals as well, but as a dog owner, I tended to focus my review on those issues relevant to me. I do not mean to bias you against the book by excluding mention of other companion animals addressed in the book. This book is probably one of the most comprehensive books I have read about companion animals and the issues surrounding them.

This book covers issues not dealt with in any other book I have read -- yet knowledge of these issues is necessary for being a responsible pet owner. No matter what your pet, you ought to give this book a read. It is a very easy and interesting read, the balance between active and passive voice tends to draw you into the context and makes it hard to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

As a physician who utilizes bee venom therapy with great success for arthritis, asthma, sarcoidosis (one of the most valuable and unknown uses of BVT), and many acute and chronic inflammatory conditions I have been searching for this book for several years. Almost everyone I know in the field spoke about it and its author, Bodog Beck, MD, the modern father of bee venom therapy, yet very few people actually had a copy. Some had actually xeroxed the entire book in order to have it. Now, finally, Health Resources Press, which also publishes Dr. Beck's other famous book on the medicinal and therapeutic uses of honey (ie. the use of honey in the prevention and cure of disease),Honey and your health, has not only reprinted the entire book on excellent paper, beautiful, clear type, and slightly larger than the original but also added a lengthy foreword ( which I wrote for them sharing my years of experience as well and updating Dr. Beck's material). This book will provide you with everything you need to understand the subject and is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive book on the subject.

The arthritis doctors and medical establishment have no interest in BVT since they can't patent and make money off a natural substance. In addition, BVT has actually eliminated these conditions in many patients, according to the authors. Would a drug company that keeps patients on arthritis medicine their whole lives like that? But, as Dr. Beck, a well known doctor of internal medicine who practiced in New York City years ago and had thousands of happy patients who were treated with BVT and many other practitioners can atest, bee venom therapy (BVT) works! After you have read and digested this volume you may wish to try Bee Venom Therapy by Joseph Broadman,MD also by the same publisher. In a more anecdotal style Dr. Broadman describes his experiences with hundreds of patients. Both books and the new forewords that accompany these new editions will get you on the road to understanding this valuable and overlooked t! herapy!Incidentally, you don't need a doctor to administer the treatments, according to Dr. Beck. The details for administration are to be found in the Beck book. The Broadman book emphasizes administration with a syringe while the Beck book covers both the use of live bee stings and injectable venom. I find them both very helpful in my practice.

An unusual syncretic religion well explained
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-21
Dr. Bui is the first Vietnamese-American to try to explain the tenets of his new syncretistic religion to the wider English reading public, and he was written this along with an American disciple, Ngasha Beck. Their account is clear and sets out may aspects of this spiritist religion, born in French Indochina in 1926 and brought to the United States by Vietnamese refugees forced to flee their homeland after 1975. Caodaism preached gender equality, racial harmony and religious tolerance in the early 20th century, and the religion has had a long history of persecution by the French, the Diem government and the present communist regime. Its disciples have endured exile, re-education camps, government censorship and many restrictions, but have courageously rebuilt their religion in a new land. Much of Caodaist philosophy is reminiscent of other more recent efforts to blend Buddhism and Christianity (like Thich Nhat Hahn), and many of its teachings (reincarnation, meditation, self-correction and vegetarianism) are now familiar parts of New Age spirituality. But Vietnam's tragic history has put in a unique place to offer lessons in peace to the world, and until now these lessons were not available to the general public.

This beautiful book provides a wide background on the basic ideas of the religion of CaoDai, including meditation techniques and spiritual practices, from CaoDai Overseas representatives Hum D. Bui and Ngasha Beck. This is an excellent first book of this pacifist religion founded in a country known, unfortunately, for its own struggles against violence and hate. Truly inspiring, and a contribution to world reconciliation and peace!

All the Einstein life is very intersting! For the 20st centuryworld life the 1900-1909 Einstein period is the apex of his scientificcontributions, specially for three papers: those about the Brownian Movement, the Photoelectric Effects and Eletromagnetic Effects when there is a referencial change. All three papers brought to ous news interpretations of those phenomena and revealed the Einstein interpretation capacity of visible and not-visible world. The paper about Photoelectric Effects presented a new quantum views of ligh and material interaction while the Eletromagnetic Effects showed the principles of Special Relativity, a theme that transverse the 20st century and arrive at 21st century without popular technology applications. This book brings a opened, stimulant, and helpful explanations - great lectures - about the principals Einstein ideas. Maybe this book is the first to point closely the life and thinking of a science men.

Translations of Einstein's papers are scattered around, but are generally hard to find. This volume brings together a decade of Einstien's scientific papers translated into English. The editors have chosen to leave in the mistakes and typographical errors and refer the reader to the documentary edition (which I believe can be purchased directly from Princeton University Press, but not on Amazon). This documentary edition is a printing of the original German articles with extensive introductions and footnotes in English. If you are not comfortable reading technical papers auf Deutsch and choose this English version over the documentary edition, then you lose the benefit of the footnotes. Even that benefit is limited. I worked through the details of Einstein's thesis with the footnotes from the documentary edition. Several errors in the thesis are not noted and there are some errors in the footnotes themselves. The collection contains several early papers of Einstein that I have never before seen translated. There are also reviews of articles which Einstein wrote on other papers. These reviews will be of limited interest for most readers. Overall, it is a great pleasure to see how Einstein originally presented his great works on relativity, Brownian motion, photoelectric effect, the dimension of molecules, etc.

One of the very best--brilliant

This is one of the very best books written in English on the history of music. It is not the easist book, but the writing is very good and sparkles in comparison to many of its genre.
The book is written as a series of little stories that are presented more or less in chronological order. If you are interested in the history of Western music, it is a "must have."
There are more fascinating details per page about music history in this book than any other book of its type, and there are quite a few pages. A great read for any serious student of music or professional musician. It can be used as a sort of mini-encyclopedia as you can for example just refer to the articles on Beethoven or Mozart--but there is much more. A minor criticism is that some of the language needs to be updated. A gem.

This book offers musical knowledge for musicians and people that are totally without any knowledge for history of music. It gives you an objective view of music and it will not bore you with information about composers (when he was born... bla bla bla). It is strictly dedicated on music and nothing else. From the first knowned moment of music in history to the 20th century neo-classical music.
This is definitely a History of music textbook and I recommend it for everyone that wants to explore the history of music.

The Educated Student should be required reading for every high school senior heading for college. I only wish it had been available when I needed it. It really helps to ease the anxiety of what to do, when and how to do it. The books covers everything from how to choose your courses and your Major; how to prepare for exams; writing papers; how to study; how to work with your professors; extra-curricular activities; how to study; and much, much more.
It is extremely well written, easy to follow, and easy to understand. It would make a perfect graduation gift or even a gift for a student who is already in college.

In "Elliot Gets Stuck," Elliot Moose finds himself in a truly tight situation. He's gotten stuck in a door flap and can't get out --- at least not on his own!

This is a story of friendship and needing help. Elliot is an underappreciated children's book character that hopefully will have many more adventures.
