Beatrix Books

In this board book, Peter Rabbit scurries by his forest friends with nary a word or glance to deliver his valentine. The lesson here: it's OK to be rude to your friends.

Keeneye has always believed there should be a law against imitating Beatrix Potter and (true to form) this effort is a D- with the illustration featuring starchy-looking Jemima Puddleduck the least awkward.

The book is a tad too big for a wee hands but the tot will find a way to open and close the book a million times to hear Peter's brief recorded message on the last page.

All in all, a well-intended endeavour but (parents and guardians) ... proceed with caution! Start the tot with the real thing!

I was disappointed to read on the third page "The Smoking of Rabbit Tabacco Pipe". I realize in the days of Beatrix Potter this may have been ok as part a character sketch but this book was written in 1995, a time of the "Dangers From Smoking" enlightenment. Did the author mean to encourage little children to smoke? We'll have to change the words to "Bubble Pipe" when this book is read to our grand child.

I read a Children 's Book called Peter Rabbit and the record read along in My room playing the record constantly til I get borned ! This helped me with my reading and listening skills that I needed for life as a child !

This book looks like its basically clip art, and not even very thoughtfully put together. The colors are washed out. The pictures seem to be placed any old place, the shapes don't correspond to anything on else in the pictures. Definitely not by Beatrix Potter. Worst of all, the "rainbow" at the end (and on the cover) shows the colors in an arbitrary order. Don't waste your money or time with this book.

And there are GREAT books for shapes and colors-- almost anything by Tana Hoban (like "So Many Circles, So Many Squares"), McMillan's "Growing Colors", Eric Carle's "My Very First Book of Colors", Martin and Carle's "Brown Bear, Brown Bear", or just draw and paint with your child and talk about the colors and shapes you see around you in daily life.

The picture on the screen shows a large size book and I didn't see any dimensions, so when I received it I was very disappointed. A little leary about ordering anything else. Sorry

Be aware that this book is not a collection of Beatrix Potter's tales and illustrations, but a book version of a cartoon. Instead of Potter's delicate pictures, the illustrations are stills of sub-par animation and the stories have been rewritten -poorly. If you find the older English to be unappealing to your children, you'd be better off buying the real thing and changing a few words as you go along. You could do the story better justice rewording it yourself and your children would have the benefit of Potter's stunning drawings.
